Lady Gets Lucky In Highland Park, Calls For Gun Control (That Already Exists)

Of course Lilli Martini is making this all about herself, but, I think we can allow it this time. To a point

Look at My Face and Tell Me We Don’t Need Gun Control

I’d been to the July 4 parade in Highland Park so many times. This time, I went with my cousin and her boyfriend, plus another 5-year-old cousin and her grandmother. We walked in the pets and children’s march that comes right before the main parade and then rushed to our seats in front of Walker Bros. pancake house to take it all in—like I had done almost every year of my life.

The ambulances and police vehicles that kick off the parade came by, then the marching band passed. That’s when we heard it: pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. I thought it was fireworks until I saw people ducking. Then people started screaming and running and I felt something hit my face.

She was bleeding quite a bit, as shown in the article and the photos

Eventually, I found my cousin’s boyfriend and he was able to drive me to the hospital. There were no ambulances because so many other people were badly injured. I ended up with six stitches to close a graze wound that the doctor said had been cauterized by the heat of the bullet. I know how lucky I am.

If true, and it wasn’t glass or something (see the photo. It could be the passing of a round, or not), she is lucky

Here is the thing: I am just 18 but this is not the first time I have been close to a mass shooting. In 2016, when a shooter killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando with a semiautomatic rifle, I was 10 minutes away, visiting my dad. In 2017, he was living in Las Vegas when a sniper armed with multiple assault rifles shot up the Route 91 Harvest Festival, killing 60 people; my dad being extremely nearby.

I’m a rising sophomore at a college in Colorado who is planning on a career in education. The massacre in Uvalde, Texas, where someone with an assault rifle killed 19 children and two teachers, weighed heavily on my mind.

That is why on Monday, just hours after the shooting, I posted a photo of my bloody face on Twitter (she is limiting who can view her tweets) with the message: “i cant fucking believe i was in the middle of a mass shooting. ive felt safe at this parade for 18 years and today i got hit with a bullet and nothing will change in america this is ridiculous.”

So, of course she wants stricter laws, and we’re supposed to use her story to do this. But

Highland Park Suspect Was Known to Police; Bought Guns Legally

The man accused of killing seven people and wounding dozens of others in a shooting that terrorized a Fourth of July parade had been investigated by the local police before. Officers had responded in 2019 after someone reported that he had tried to kill himself. And they came to his home a few months later — seizing a knife collection — after a family member reported that he had pledged to “kill everyone.”

Still, in the years since, the man, Robert E. Crimo III, 21, was able to legally buy several guns in Illinois, including a high-powered rifle that officials said was used in the attack on Monday in Highland Park, a lakefront suburb north of Chicago. On Tuesday, Mr. Crimo was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder.

The details of those prior police visits raised questions about whether the Illinois authorities missed opportunities to use their relatively strict firearm laws to block Mr. Crimo’s gun purchases, and about whether a newly signed federal gun law might have made a difference had it been in force earlier. In a statement, the Illinois State Police defended its decision to grant Mr. Crimo a permit to own a gun, which he applied for in December 2019, three months after the police took the knives from his home.

That was the NY Times, showing that, despite all the strict gun control that so many want, including Ms. Martini above, the government failed spectacularly in stopping this guy. Gun control groups love Illinois for their gun control strictness. “Assault rifles” are banned in Highland Park, and the nutter planned this for weeks.

(Breitbart) On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “AC360,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) stated that the red flag law in Illinois is “ineffective” and “it certainly does appear that there was enough information” about the Highland Park shooter “to cause a court to cause law enforcement to go in and take his guns away.” Murphy also stated that the gun law recently passed by the Senate would give incentives for states to adopt laws “that are right now working in states like Florida, working less well, it seems, in states like Illinois.”

Yeah, it’s working in Florida, not so much in most of the Democrat states which do not seem interested in actually doing law and order stuff. It doesn’t help when police fail to enter the information into the database that is used to determine if someone can purchase a firearm.

(Reuters) The man charged with killing seven people at a Chicago-area July Fourth parade slipped past the safeguards of an Illinois “red flag” law designed to prevent people deemed to have violent tendencies from getting guns, officials revealed on Tuesday.

The disclosures raised questions about the adequacy of the state’s “red flag” laws even as a prosecutor lauded the system as “strong” during a news conference announcing seven first-degree murder charges against the 21-year-old suspect, Robert, E. Crimo III.

Any system is only as good as the people involved in it, and, when they fail, bad things can happen.

Congress must once again ban the weapons of choice for mass murderers, i.e., assault weapons.

Let the nuSupremes tell the American people they deserve to die by terrorism.

    • L.G.Brandon!, L.G.Brandon! says:

Congress can ban anything it wants as long as it amends the US Constitution to do so. As long as you OBEY the law to MAKE a law then the law is lawful. But according to the HIGHEST LAW OF THE LAND “the Right of the people to KEEP & BEAR arms shall not be infringed”.

Listen Dowd, we are either governed by our laws or we are a tyranny run by savage leftists that scream like children to take away our Freedom. We can’t be both. We know what side you’re on.

Did you turn in your “assault weapons” yet you lying hypocrite commie?

      FJB

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

        L.G./Kye,

The nuSupremes have lost the confidence of the American people.

Congress should ban assault weapons again, as the ban will reduce mass shootings and mass shooting deaths.

I don’t have any assault weapons.

        Second Amendment
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

To which well-regulated militias did the murderers in El Paso, Parkland, Highland Park, Uvalde, Buffalo, Newtown etc belong.

These nuSupremes might declare a ban on terrorist tools unConstitutional, after all their objective is to do the GOP’s bidding.

        • Jl says:

See the comma in there after”free state”? There’s your answer. The two statements are different, not related. If they were speaking of the same thing, why not write it as “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, shall not be infringed”? They were speaking of two separate things-one the “people”, the other a regulated militia

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

It’s the comma! How could I and previous Supreme Court justices have missed that? So we should just ignore the “militia” part as meaningless?

The nuCourt has created a “right” for any American in any state to be able to keep and bear a firearm at any time. This “right” had been hidden in the 14th Amendment all along! They argued the 14th Amendment was intended, in part, to secure the rights of former slaves to keep and bear arms to protect them from, get this, state militias!!

Anyway, the Supremes have spoken, anybody anywhere, whether river deep or mountain high, can pack heat, so firearm homicides will continue to increase faster than gas prices in California.

    • We note here how the Sage from St Louis wants to ban “the weapons of choice for mass murderers, i.e., assault weapons,” after he has told us many times that “mass murderers” are almost always white men males. Apparently he differentiates such from the weapons of choice of black men males.

St Louis has a smaller population than Lexington, Kentucky, but has seen 86 murders so far this year; Lexington has suffered through 23 killings thus far.

Lexington’s all time homicide record, 37, was set last year, and, alas! is ahead of that pace in 2022; last year, the city saw its 23rd killing on August 2nd.

So far, the Gateway City has more than doubled Lexington’s all time yearly homicide record.

In a completely unrelated statistic, 14.62% of Lexington’s population are black, while 44.5% of St Louis population are non-Hispanic black.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Almost all the Black men gun downed in cities such as St Louis, Chicago and Baltimore are killed with handguns. Although I am happy to be rid of all handguns it is impractical.

This is unrelated to terrorist attacks.

  2. Matthew says:

The whole “known to authorities” thing is the real disturbing trend. This latest deranged criminal is one of the worst examples yet. If we’re looking for someone to point a finger at here beyond the perp, perhaps examine precisely who signed off on this head case buying firearms on 4 different occasions. I mean the actual individuals, not just the agency involved. Prosecuted them like the parents of the kid in Michigan.

Of course, he could have obtained weapons illegally, killers and nut jobs do it every day. We can ban and confiscate everything right down to butter knives and the insane bent on killing will still find a way, but this idea that Congress can do anything that would even deter this sort of insanity, let alone the “…make sure this never happens again.” nonsense, is nuttier than the acts themselves.

    • Dana says:

Remember Nikolas Cruz, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas killer? He, too, was “known to the authorities,” but because the Broward County Sheriff’s Department kept letting him off with warnings, and the Parkland School Board didn’t want to report an in-school assault of his to law enforcement, because they didn’t want to feed the so-called “school-to-prison” pipeline, he had no felony record and was thus able to pass the background check that allowed him to buy an AR-15.

The solution is not more gun control laws which will restrict the rights of law-abiding people but not bother the criminals who don’t care about any stinkin’ permits, but to enforce the laws already on the books. Mr Cruz could have been behind bars the day he shot up the school.

  3. Professor Hale says:

This really has gone too far. Congress needs to pass a law banning mass murder. This will close the mass murder loophole.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

You may not realize this, but murder is already against the law!

Why doesn’t the nuSupreme Court declare ALL gun laws unConstitutional? The 2nd Amendment is very clear.

      Second Amendment
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Note there is no specification regarding age, yet many states regulate the ages at which people can own firearms. What part of “shall not be infringed” don’t they understand?

I think the ages vary by state, too. Does that strike you as peculiar?

  4. MSG Grumpy says:

For anyone who is still insisting that the Chicago ANTIFA shooter is “Pro-Trump” or anything except the demoncrat Brownshirt, ANTIFA, Socialist/Communist he appears to be…

    @asleep_awake

So yes, you can advocate removing the right of Law Abiding Americans to defend themselves from the demoncrats…
It will NOT work out well for demoncrats, because Law Abiding Americans know what happens to people who give up their means to defend themselves…100 Million of their own citizens in the twentieth Century.

    MSG Grumpy

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Eliminating assault weapons from our private arsenals will not interfere with “Law Abiding Americans'” ability to defend themselves. AR-15 style rifles are not good home defense tools, anyway. A shotgun with low recoil ammo is a better choice.

Mass shooters are evil and uncaring but not stupid. They realize that .223 rounds fired from a semi-auto rifle designed for rapid and repeated firing are ideal for killing many people quickly and indiscriminately.

The fear that Democrats are coming after “Law Abiding Americans” is silly.

      • James Lewis says:

        Dear Elwood:

We both know that semi-automatic weapons are not assault weapons no matter how “military” they look.

What you seek is the ban on all semi-automatic weapons. That means we all get to wake up one morning having to turn in our semi-automatic shot guns, rifles, and pistols of all varieties.

You’re playing the long game, which the Left has been doing for a long, long time.

BTW – The right to bear arms is just that. THE RIGHT. No qualifier needed.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

          Mr James,

We specifically are talking about the military-style AR-15 type rifles.

Usually .223/5.56NATO rounds, 3000+ft/sec muzzle velocity, ergonomic, modifiable… these are just like the military versions except they are semi-auto instead of with switchable auto. Because of improvements in body armor, the US military has recently commissioned a more powerful .277 SIG FURY round in the similar Sig Sauer XM5.

Anyway, there’s a good reason why global militaries use this type rifle. It’s the same reason mass shooters use them. They are designed for wholesale killing.

The hobby of shooting these type rifles doesn’t outweigh their use in terrorist attacks.

          • James Lewis says:

The problem is as I stated. The law would be written in such a way that the 9th Court would define all semi-automatic weapons as assault weapons.

And all guns are designed for killing.

BTW – The right to bear arms is just that. THE RIGHT. No qualifier needed.

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

            Mr Lewis,

Not all guns are designed for killing humans. Rifles developed for military use are. BTW, did you see the officers at the Highland Park slaughter? Note their rifles.

There is no reason to think that a law would include all semi-auto actions or even all semi-auto rifles. Mass shooters prefer the AR-15 platform rifles over hunting rifles.

The previous assault weapon ban did not include semi-auto handguns or shotguns. I have two Remington Model 1100s for hunting game, not humans.

      • Dana says:

        The distinguished Mr Dowd wrote:

Mass shooters are evil and uncaring but not stupid.

They may be clever, but that doesn’t preclude them being stupid. Assuming that he is the killer, Robert Crimo III is going to spend the rest of his miserable life behind bars. Nikolas Cruz is going to spend the rest of his life in jail, as is Dylann Roof.

Looking at his picture, one guesses that Mr Crimo was an ‘incel,’ involuntarily celibate male, because no sighted woman would ever (voluntarily) copulate with him. That’s got to be rough, but I suspect that, if convicted, he’ll get all the sex he wants in prison.

Clearly, Mr Crimo is stupid. He has tattoos on his neck and face — which deserves an automatic guilty verdict all by itself — something only a stupid person would get. Perhaps he thought that his life was miserable, but I’d guess that it wasn’t as miserable as it will be in the penitentiary.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Contrary to Mr Dana’s assertion, tattoos are not a sign of stupidity. Crimo was smart enough to buy the proper assault weapons to shoot some 45 people.

As satisfying as it will be for the murderer to be punished, preventing him from committing the murders would have been even more satisfying.

          • CarolAnn says:

As usual you’ll make any stupid statement to try and make your foolish point. With you it’s always the narrative.

          • david7134 says:

            Jeff,
Dana did not say tattoos were stupid, you made the up with your little generalization trick. You use that as part of your racism and bigotry. Dana indicated that facials tattoos are not wise if you commit crimes as they are readily recognized. You are really getting disgusting with your moral narcissism.

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

            CarolAnn & david Porter,

Your hatreds outweigh your common sense.

Here’s what the honorable Dana typed: Mr Crimo is stupid. He has tattoos on his neck and face — which deserves an automatic guilty verdict all by itself — something only a stupid person would get

He clearly said people who get tattoos are stupid. I oppose tattoos myself but know some wonderful, intelligent and lovely men and women with tattoos. To each his or her own. Tattoos, even on the face and neck, don’t indicate stupidity. Claiming that tRump won the election – now that’s a sign of stupidity.

          • david7134 says:

            Jeff,
            No, you are wrong.

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

            porter david,

I’ve just looked at a couple of things that aren’t getting mentioned much in this raging discussion. The thing that stands out most to me is that since around 2010, or so, firearms haven’t changed, local laws have gotten more draconian, if possible, in many of the areas where these whackos operate; but social media has become a more powerful influence. Follow the science.

  8. The catholic but not Catholic Elwood P. Dowd says:

The Highland Park murderer was in court today.

He confessed to the shooting but he has not yet given his motive.
Used a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 which he bought in 2020, firing 83 rounds in total
Reloaded the weapon twice (30 round mags) while carrying out the rampage, and dropped it when he ran away
Police used the serial number on that gun to find the murderer and his family
After the shooting, he used his mom’s car to drive to Madison, Wisconsin
and contemplated a second shooting in Wisconsin at a different parade because he had 60 rounds left

  9. Matthew says:

    Speaking of ignoring stuff…

What militia means in that context can be debated, but it definitely does NOT mean a professional military organization or police force such that existed then or now. It never meant that, no matter how often or loudly or in what forum anyone tries to imply that it does, including you. Nobody is ignoring it, its just that it does not pertain to the right as stated. Not even a little bit.

What never seems to be debated, probably because the meaning is absolutely crystal clear, is the next part, “…the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

The PEOPLE, that’s us, the citizens. It can be interpreted no other way. It’s our right, and just like all the other rights of the people, it doesn’t come from the government or even from the Constitution. It is very plainly worded. Nobody has to twist themselves into a pretzel in an attempt to gain some “living document” type hidden meaning in order to squeeze something out of it that the authors never heard of because it didn’t exist when the amendment was written. None of that is necessary here. It’s the right of the people, we always had it, that phrase is merely a recognition of that fact.

Again, there is NO other possible meaning. “…the right of the people to keep and bear arms…” Keep and bear, the people have, and always had, the right to have and carry arms. That’s what it meant then, that’s what it means now, that’s what it means in the hours and days after any deranged criminal, no matter how awful, cowardly murders their fellow citizens. Crimes or tragedies do not alter any amendment to the Constitution, ever.

So that often quoted full phrase begins with only the simple acknowledgement, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,” that’s not the “right” part, that’s only a statement, that in the opinion of the authors, the militia is needed. And how did the authors intend that the militia remain possible? By the keeping and bearing of arms BY. THE. PEOPLE. We would be the militia should the need arise for one.

Those that want to disarm the people (that would be you and your ilk dickhead, just in case you got lost) need to drop the pretzel logic attempts to interpret their way to a disarmed society (which is the obvious end game here) and acknowledge that the only way to get there is to amend the Constitution. The whole “well regulated militia thing is only an obfuscation, one that the people are getting pretty damned tired of.

    • L.G.Brandon!, L.G.Brandon! says:

Damn right we’re tired of and we’re tired of bullies and thugs like Dowd who think they matter more than we do. We need to get rid of the trash guys. I vote for exile and/or execution. One is either a Patriot or not and I have no room for quislings.

the pathological liars like Dowd need to go. It’s enough already. We are a free country and if you can’t abide by that then leave.

Dowd is an unstable person trying to foment war among the people. He loves death (as his disposition for prenatal genocide proves). He loves power over others as his predilection towards punitive acts against political opponents shows. He is corrupt, a grifter and a criminal.

  10. UnkleC says:

Some conflicting information or disinformation on this case is being reported by the propaganda division. Most, if not all, outlets are reporting that the whacko used an AR-15 or an “AR-15 like rifle”. This is to be expected as is the obligatory ‘high power rifle’ tag line.
The Po-Po reported that the whacko used a Keltec Sub 2000, a ‘pistol caliber carbine’ or ‘personal defense weapon’ usually sold in 9mm [.40 is an option], hardly a ‘high power rifle’. Did not fit the narrative of the left, so just adjust the “facts”. This relatively crappy, cheap firearm is best as range toy or home defense weapon. Sort of.

They hate us and they hate our country. Just read what that dickhead Dowd writes here all the time.
He knows right well the constitution makes no mention of abortion yet insists he wants it a right! Insanity. If we don’t have just laws we don’t have any laws.
