Christmas Removed

Macy’s boycotted:

Immortalized
in a 1947 Christmas movie classic, Macy’s is now the focus of a boycott
campaign protesting the department-store chain’s replacement of "Merry
Christmas" with politically correct greetings.

A group called the Committee to Save Merry Christmas
says Macy’s and its umbrella Federated Department Stores have ignored
several requests that "Merry Christmas" signs be returned and that its
advertising acknowledge the time-honored phrase.

"It’s
the height of hypocrisy for a corporation to make tens of millions of
dollars selling Christmas presents, yet coldly refuse to acknowledge
Christmas," said the group’s chairman, Manuel Zamorano, in a statement.
"What’s the holiday all about, anyway? Politically correct phases like
‘Seasons Greetings’ and ‘Happy Holidays’ are no substitute for the real
thing."

Unfortunatly, no Macy’s down here. But, it might be interesting to wander the local malls and see if other department stores have this same type of bland signage.

Someone please explain to me what is wrong with "Merry
Christmas?" What is the point of removing all references to what the
holiday season is about to the  majority of Americans? Most of the
folks who are putting the money into Macy’s coffers during December are
purchasing Christmas gifts.

I had planned on waiting till the 24th to post a sound file of this, and still will (and I have a really great post, if I do say so myself, for the 25th), but, I will post the text:

Charlie Brown: "Is there anyone who can tell me what Christmas is all about?"
Linus: "I can, Charlie Brown. Lights, please."

"And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them! And they were sore afraid …
And the angel said unto them, "Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings o great joy, which shall be to all my people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ, the Lord."

"And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."
And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and good will toward men."

"That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown."

I don’t know if you have a Rich’s where you are but they are “Macy’s” also now. I love the Peanuts and love that bleb! I was thinking that the entire world has gone insane and now, reading this about Macy’s, I am sure!

  2. Ogre says:

You have the soundtrack to that speech, too? Most excellent!

  3. Good Grief, Charlie Brown!

I love the speech from this Charlie Brown cartoon. Pirate’s Cove posted it first, and I’ve copied it from him here:

  4. No Rich’s that I know of. Might have to check what other companies Macy’s is part of. Yeah, I have the whole thing on wav file, right from Charlie brown speaking to the end of Linus’s speech. I am either going to create a webpage using bandwith either on tripod or RR homepages, or see if I can uplaod the file to typepad for easy viewing or playing. Then, for Christmas, have a really special one, which, surprisingly, alot of people, at least down south, have never read. An all time classic.

  5. You know what is crazier than Macy’s removing “Merry Christmas”? These quacks calling for a boycott because of it.

BTW, is there any confirmation of these claims (about the people who host the Thankgiving’s Day Parade, complete with a waving Santa at the end)? Hqve you seen this “systematic removal” reported anywhere else but these goof’s website or WorldNut? I haven’t.

  6. You have a point or 2 there, PW. Me, if a store ticks me off, I go somewhere else. Just like changing the radio dial. I asked my Mom to check it out for me when I was talking to her earlier, at a mall in Eatontown, NJ, if she went up there. I wouldn’t be surprised if the story was true. I have noticed the same thing in much of the corporate culture, including the company I work for. Christmas trees are not allowed. Do not even have wreaths this year.

  7. Julie says:

Well, I’ll say this..seems like to me that everyone is running around trying to take God completely out of our Country all in the name of being “politcally correct.” I’m interested to know if it’s true of not. No Christmas trees or wreaths..what the hell is wrong with everyone? They are taking the fun out of Christmas–and the true meaning! What does everyone think Christmas is all about? It’s the birth of Christ! It was a really sad state when I attended a college football game recently and no prayer said before the game..the entire world is going completely psycho nuts!!

  8. . . . the entire world is going completely psycho nuts!!

Relax. Generations have said the same exact thing. I;m talking for thousands of years, here. I have read quotes from Romans (ancient Romans, I kid you not) complaining about “the youth” and how they were subverting and destroying “civilization”.

Now, your worldview may die out and be replaced . . . granted. There are lots of worldviews. And to you that may be “psycho nuts”. But to those that replace it, it is sanity.

Does ANYONE ever check facts anymore? Is Dan Rather working for ABC now?

I havn’t been to MACY’s, and never will, but a simple and QUICK check of their website shows a commercial where some guy sings “Hallelujah”… and a graphic that CLEARLY says “Merry Christmas from Macy’s”.

    Doesn’t sound that “anti-christmas” to me…

I guess the world just wouldn’t be able to get along unless someone’s b1tching about “the evil left”… pathetic really.

can i just thank you so very much for putting up the text for Linus’ speech? i have been searching for that for ages!

and you’re right. MERRY CHRISTMAS dammit! i just heard someone say and i quote “i’m going home to decorate my christmas tr–oop, i mean my winter tree” what in heck??? i’m saddened and frustrated to live in a society where “Christmas” has become the new swear word. I’m tired of the holiday specials where they seem to be AFRAID to say that the true meaning of christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ the Lord. its not called CHRISTmas for nothing…

i think they started the boycott, because it was just the last straw, after all the ludicrous attempts at muffling christmas, and that it has creeped its way even to Macy’s, the store that holds a timeless tradition like the Macy’s CHRISTMAS parade, the annoyances built up and became too much. I can’t say i blame them. its stupid. most of the business macy’s gets during Christmas is people buying Christmas presents anyway. why would THEY be offended.

we’ve been forced to make room and respect other religions, then why the double standard. shove over, and make room for our religion! why should other religions have all the respect and acceptance and the no-touch shields, but everyone can attack Christmas. I don’t see what is wrong with a holiday that brings millions of people together for the only time they see each other in a YEAR, a holiday that makes hearts warm and touches tender. if nothing else, it boosts commerce! i won’t reject Christmas!

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  12. I forget where I got it from, but the search would be “Charlie Brown Christmas” on yahoo. Bunch of links. Check it out on the 24th. Will still have the audio!

  13. Bonnie Soltis says:

Our nation was founded as a Christian heritage nation and the majority of our forefathers were Christians. As a result, there was more honor towards God and parents, and people in general. People were more family oriented and less full of themselves, because of their benevolence through Christ’s teachings for others. Christmas was a very powerful part of that heritage. It warms the hearts and yes reminds us of our roots. One must wonder what the opposition is AFRAID OF. It has hurt no one but blessed many and certainly helped to line the pockets of the retailers. Not only is this happening with Macy’s but many of our other commerical common retailers. It is as if it were sneaked in unaware and without our vote. As a Christian heritage nation, we are entitled to a vote, but none was asked of us as the clients and consumers of those retail stores. Seems to me if they can’t consider what the majority of consumers want (and yes the stats show the majority does not want to eliminate Christmas to a whopping figure of 90% polled in America) than why not boycott them, and why take our money? It’s the principle of free speech. Everyone else is coming out of the closet, why not the time heritage Christians? Why are these same people promoting every self indulging selfish and even vulgar endeavors their flesh so desires, yet against everything left that stands for something virtuous and good, filled with cheer and yes, through the reason for the season, Christ, who gives hope to those who are without it. I am also offended at many of the opposers lifestyles but I don’t run around trying to shut everything down for them or shut up their free speech, choice and vote. We do honor other religions as well, so are we going to remove everything that promotes them as well in every store and institution. I think not. Plus, we are not a nation founded on other religions, but Christianity. If you want something else, move out of this nation. Other nations don’t change their heritage because someone doesn’t like it. It is all part of thier rich fiber, character, heritage and trademark. But yes we speak out, certainly the opposers have, and it is our right (at least for now til they work to take that away next)…and take a stand for our children’s sake and what’s next, stopping every Christmas song and book? Or shutting down churches all together? Sounds like the beginning of socialism to me, especially with people like newdow trying to take In God We Trust off the coins now. So it’s time we consider fighting back, not just with boycotts, but exercising our “God-given” and forefather’s blood and sweat rights for freedom of our original and foundational trademark of American religion, and think about moving in to come out of the closet and show how offended we are at thier lifestyle and choices. No more double standards. If we don’t take a stand it will get worse and it is moving quickly. Are we going to change the names of all our holidays for a handful (less than 10%) of offended ones? If we are truly United States, then let’s the rest of the 90% unite, and not just roll over for whatever the whiners scream about. They are just under conviction anyhow. Christ is a powerful reminder of their own sin and selfishness, and they can’t stand it. But He is also a symbol of great love and mercy. Go to Mel Gibson’s movie, The Passion and see that it sold out more tickets than any other movie in history. See the love of Christ there. Is that something that is bad for you to know? People have choices (given by God) and even God himself did not take away our rights to choose so Christians and those who care about our healthy traditions, I emplore you to do something while you still can. If other nations like North Korea had done this when they had the chance they would not be living in such horror today. If you don’t believe it, check out nations who forfieted their religious rights by doing nothing. Remember, one of our great forefathers said, the only thing that has to happen for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. Go ahead, take a risk and a stand for something good, and see how it makes you feel then. And though they can’t take God out of our hearts, they can and have taken Him out of as much view of our children’s eyes as they can. So we need to find other creative ways as well to get the message out of Christ, however, one of the major steps to socialism is the removal of Christ throughout history, so it does make an impact that is often irreversable, and trust me, and the history of other nations, they won’t stop with removing Christmas, they will continue until we have no Christian freedoms.
