Washington Post: Toss The All Volunteer Military

Welcome to Über Liberal World!

(Washington Post) Our lives are cluttered with unnecessary traditions, ideas and institutions. Warm weather came early this year, but there’s still time for a good spring cleaning. After purging old receipts, broken appliances and unloved outfits, what else should we toss? Outlook asked 10 writers what they thought we’d be better off without. From the Cabinet to premium gas to chick flicks, here are their picks.

1. All-volunteer military by Thomas E. Ricks
2. Premium gas by Jeff S. Bartlett
3. Home equity loans by Bethany McLean
4. 3 p.m. school day by Peter Orszag
5. Chick flicks by Melissa Silverstein
6. The Cabinet by Dana Milbank
7. Software patents by Christina Mulligan
8. The social kiss by Meghan Daum
9. Brainstorming by Jonah Lehrer
10. Grades by Melissa Harris-Perry

The above link goes to #1 on the list, the all-volunteer military, with links to the other 9 embedded at the beginning of the story

Since the end of the military draft in 1973, every person joining the U.S. armed forces has done so because he or she asked to be there. Over the past decade, this all-volunteer force has been put to the test and has succeeded, fighting two sustained foreign wars with troops standing up to multiple combat deployments and extreme stress.

This is precisely the reason it is time to get rid of the all-volunteer force. It has been too successful. Our relatively small and highly adept military has made it all too easy for our nation to go to war — and to ignore the consequences.

So, our military is just to darned good, so let’s do away with volunteering and go to a draft?

We had a draft in the 1960s, of course, and it did not stop President Lyndon Johnson from getting into a ground war in Vietnam. But the draft sure did encourage people to pay attention to the war and decide whether they were willing to support it.

Hmm, so even with a draft, LBJ was still rather adventuresome? Then what’s the point? “...reestablishing a draft, with all its Vietnam-era connotations, would cause problems for the military…” Ah. There’s the point. Ruining the best fighting force on the planet, bringing America down off our perch.

As for the others

2. Premium gas by Jeff S. Bartlett (so what if you’re engine can be damaged? You shouldn’t be driving that type of super evil Gaia killing vehicle)
3. Home equity loans by Bethany McLean (actually makes a good point about home owners loading up on debt)
4. 3 p.m. school day by Peter Orszag (makes some good points in keeping school open till 5 or 6pm, but, I think we all know the idea is to provide more indoctrination time for kids. Of course, what of those who play sports, have groups to attend, or work?)
5. Chick flicks by Melissa Silverstein (yes, please!)
6. The Cabinet by Dana Milbank (Milbank makes a few good points on this one, which is the presidential cabinet. Another one would be to get rid of all the unelected and unaccountable czars)
7. Software patents by Christina Mulligan (people are mean for daring to patent their work, oh, and it’s hard to enforce them, so…)
8. The social kiss by Meghan Daum (because we might….gulp….graze lips. Cooties!)
9. Brainstorming by Jonah Lehrer (some good points)
10. Grades by Melissa Harris-Perry (this one deserves a post of its own. It’s about as whiny from a left wing teachers POV as it can get)

I’d get rid of:

  1. Science that doesn’t follow the scientific method
  2. Science that is based on political advocacy
  3. Warmists that don’t live the life they say everyone else should live. I suggest they be drafted into the Peace Corps and dropped in some Third World shit hole, er, developing nation, to see how they live
  4. The permanent political aristrocracy – we need term limits. Which would also eliminate
  5. The neverending campaigns
  6. Voting rights for people who are too unknowledgable to vote

I could surely come up with some more, however, what are your ideas?

Globull Warming Project Will Be Like “Arab Spring”

Well, it already kinda is: a movement that seems legit, and it turns out that in a lot of cases there are extremists behind the scenes

(CBC) As part of the effort to mobilize the public to tackle climate change, several U.S. environmental groups plan to launch a large initiative in 2013 based around engaging young people through social media and crowdsourcing ideas on green technologies, renewable energy and others means of mitigating the factors contributing to climate change.

The aim, says Hayes, is to create “a huge public consensus-building exercise that hopefully will have some political consequences.”

“In a sense, it’s a climatic Arab Spring,” said Hayes. “Climate has been mostly a television issue. It’s something where people preach at other people or, in the case of Al Gore’s movie, they provide a film, and you go and you watch it. But it’s not a computer kind of issue where you are involved and engaged in doing something yourself.

“What we’re trying to do is make that transition, so it’s not just passive receptacles of information, but people who engage in it, challenge things and become committed to acting on the basis of their growing understanding of what’s really going on.”

Hayes also wants to get back to calling CO2 a “poison”. Because that’s worked so well to date. This is just another in a long line of spreading awareness campaigns which accomplish nothing but make people feel good about themselves, while enriching the Warmist big wigs.

But, I have a great idea to mobilize the public: all Warmists should practice what they preach. Then, maybe people would believe that anthropogenic global warming is real.

UN Pushing For Massive Wealth Redistribution For “Green” Crap

I’d forgotten about this story, which I saw a few days ago at a different news outlet, till I was perusing the blogroll, and saw it over at the Lonely Conservative

(Fox News) The upcoming United Nations environmental conference on sustainable development will consider  a breathtaking array of carbon taxes, transfers of trillions of dollars from wealthy countries to poor ones, and new spending programs to guarantee that populations around the world are protected from the effects of the very programs the world organization wants to implement, according to stunning U.N. documents examined  by Fox News.

Among the proposals on how the “challenges can and must be addressed,” according to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon:

–More than $2.1 trillion a year in wealth transfers from rich countries to poorer ones, in the name of fostering “green infrastructure, ” “climate adaptation” and other “green economy” measures.

–New carbon taxes for industrialized countries that could cost about $250 billion a year, or 0.6 percent of Gross Domestic Product, by 2020. Other environmental taxes are mentioned, but not specified.

–Further unspecified price hikes that extend beyond fossil fuels to anything derived from agriculture, fisheries, forestry, or other kinds of land and water use, all of which would be radically reorganized. These cost changes would “contribute to a more level playing field between established, ‘brown’ technologies and newer, greener ones.”

And guess who gets to administer all this money? The unelected bureaucrats at the United Nations. Anyone remember the UN’s Food For Oil program, and what a colossal failure that was? How about the bribery scandals? Sex trafficking? Major human rights violating countries on the Human Rights Commission?

What this does is what the far left has always been about: more and more power in the hands of the government, giving them more money, and reducing people’s liberty. Liberals should be careful for what they wish for, because they will not be immune to having their own wealth confiscated and their freedom curtailed. And none of it will benefit the environment, sustainability, or reduce globull warming: it’ll just enrich the UN people.

Union Supporting Speaker Says Of Scott Walker “We Cut Your Head Off”

Strange that I’m failing to find this story in any of the usual liberal media outlets

(Big Government) But Pastor T. Ray McJunkins of the Union Baptist Church and President of the Faith Coalition for the Common Good and William McNary of USAction stole the show.

McJunkins delivered an energetic address he closed up metaphorically with the story of David and Goliath, ultimately declaring:

We are the Davids … and you may be a big giant, a big goliath, but David had 5 smooth stones that brought Goliath down … all he had was stones and a sling shot, and I just wonder out there among us, how many of you came with your sling today? … Load your slings up today when we leave here, putting a smooth stone of equal rights at the collective bargaining table and throw it at Goliath … And Goliath will come down, Scott Walker we send you back to Wisconsin as David did Goliath, we cut your head off and go back into town, singing a new song!

Rather uncivil and violent discourse, wouldn’t you say? Surely, most of us who live in Reality Land understand that this is simply a metaphor, but, under the Liberal Rules Of Political Discourse, this is considered to be a call to violence, so, it should be condemned. When will we hear Obama and all his peeps denounce it?

Then you have William McNary, a longtime ally of the Communist Party and Obama

McNary lit up the crowd as he warned the unions to be prepared, “they are gonna call us names now … they are gonna say we are engaging in class warfare … they say this as they lower our wages and cut our benefits, were engaging in class warfare, they say this as they lay off workers and send jobs over seas, we’re engaging in class warfare … They got the nerve that we’re engaging in welfare[sic]? But I got a message for ‘em, the bully Scott Walker and all the bully governors across this country. We didn’t ask for this fight, we didn’t pick this fight, but if it’s a fight you want, it’s a fight you gonna get. Knuckle up! Knuckle up! Knuckle up!” he shouted to the roaring crowd.

So, will you Democrats denounce this violent tone?

Oh, and lest you think Big Government made it up, there’s video at the link.

Sorry, Stoners, Looks Like Obama’s Not On Your Side For Marijuana Legalization

Two points to start out: first, I could personally care less about legalization of marijuana for medical use or complete legalization (with certain regulations such as age controls), as I do not use it. But, from my classical liberalism point of view, smoking it doesn’t hurt other people, and, if it doesn’t hurt other people, then the government should stay out. Also, pot is much less a worse drug than even alcohol.

Second, it’s interesting to note that I made the point several times regarding the Arizona immigration law, wondering if the politicized Obama DOJ would also go after medical marijuana in the states that allow it based on the Obama administrations use of the Supremacy Clause, since pot is classified federally as a Schedule I drug, meaning it has no medicinal value. Actually, it seems that they have gone after the medical marijuana companies, though the DOJ hasn’t sued the states that allow the usage in violation of federal law

(Politico) President Barack Obama has turned out to be a real buzzkill.

Back when he was running in 2008, Obama said he supported the “basic concept of using medical marijuana for the same purposes and with the same controls as other drugs” and that he was “not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws.” He didn’t go farther. But he also didn’t do anything to dissuade speculation among medical marijuana proponents who took this as a sign that the man headed to the Oval Office was on their side.

Four years later, the raids on drug dispensaries have kept up — despite a Justice Department memo formalizing low-enforcement priority instructions from Attorney General Eric Holder, who announced in a March 2009 press conference that the raids would stop on distributors who were in compliance with state and local law. Obama never said anything about supporting legalization or decriminalization, but his medical marijuana statements were enough to get him heralded by some in the larger pro-pot community as the best hope for chipping away at the decades-long drug war.

Like, a total bummer, dude. Of course, the Obama admin. has also done their best to kill off fun stoner foods. But, really, Obama voters heard what Team Obama wanted them to hear

But the hopes that Obama would be a kinder, gentler, more tolerant drug warrior have gone up in smoke.

“I’m very disappointed,” Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), a longtime supporter of marijuana legalization and medical marijuana, told POLITICO. “They look more like the Bush administration than the Clinton administration.”

So, why didn’t you put forth legislation to legalize it at the federal level, Barney?

“I believed in him,” Montana-based activist and medical cannabis user Sarah Combs said about the president. “I don’t believe a word he says now.”

That’s because the DOJ started rolling up the Montana medical marijuana dispensers, as well as ones in other states in 2011. You basically heard what you wanted to hear, and you ended up with an incompetent who really doesn’t care.

Still, even allies of the president find the status-quo unsustainable: with the medical marijuana community dazed and confused over how exactly how tolerant the federal government is willing to be.

Why should they be tolerant? The law is the law. Either the Obama admin. will follow the law, or he should be impeached, or at least resign.

Just a hint for those of you who want to legalize medical marijuana nationally: no one is buying the notion that it won’t be misused. Furthermore, if you want to totally legalize it (which could bring in some nice tax revenue, I might add), don’t show up at rallies stoned and looking like this (via WRAL)

Oh, and don’t expect Obama to do anything: he’s too busy vacationing, golfing, partying, and campaigning.

Grist Has An Earth Day Wish: A Better Human Brain

So says Warmist Dave Roberts

For Earth Day, Treehugger asked several green types what one wish they had that might make the world a better place. The answers were interesting and diverse — you can read them all here.

Here’s mine:

I would change the human brain. Thanks to millions of years evolving in small groups on the savannah, our brains are rather maladapted to being part of a single human tribe of billions, most of whom we will never see or know, with collective effects on our global habitat that play out incrementally over centuries and are irreversible and possibly unadaptable.

Warmists are getting more and more desperate as their failed religion continues to die. Their latest excuse is that their’s something wrong with non-believer’s brains. Instead of insulting us, they cold perhaps…..show hard physical evidence using the scientific method.

My Earth Day wish is that all Warmist live the life they say everyone else should. Also, that they stop ruining real environmental issues with the bat shit crazy prognostications and scareathons.

Today, we are on a course that is likely to render our planet unsuitable for human civilization—if not by 2100, by 2300.

I’d also wish that Warmists would tell us what the climate will do in the short term, instead of when we will be dead. They can’t, though.

Romney’s “Obama Isn’t Working” Is Raaaaacism

What else could it be? Excitable Tommy Christopher

Mitt Romney’s ‘Obama Isn’t Working’ Banner Evokes Racial Stereotypes

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney rolled out a new accessory at a speech in Ohio today, delivering his remarks in front of a black banner that said “Obama Isn’t Working,” which is also the name of a website his campaign set up several months ago (in case you didn’t get the message from the banner, it was also on the front of Romney’s podium).

The slogan is a multiple entendre, but one of those entendres, intentionally or not, is evocative of a nasty racial stereotype about black men.

Or, it could mean simply that Obama is destroying this country. Patterico has a nice graphic that shows how hard Obama works.

PJ Tattler

The “Obama Isn’t Working” slogan is very effective messaging. That’s why Christoper and his liberal friends are out to destroy it. “Obama Isn’t Working” hits the major notes that Christopher mentions above — Obama’s policies aren’t working, his presidency isn’t working, and yes, the president himself isn’t working. In case Tommy missed it, this president has already held more campaign events this year than any previous incumbent president ever has, by far. This president has become known for golfing during the work day, and his family has become known for their 17 lavish vacations at a time when most Americans are on shaky economic ground thanks in part to Obama’s failed and misguided policies. None of this has anything to do with race, but the fact that Christopher sees race in it says more about him than anything or anyone else. He’s a typical liberal, and will use race as a weapon when it suits him. We’re supposed to be past all this.

Stimulus. “Green” energy. Economic policies. Foreign policies. For the most part, none are working. But, pointing that out is certainly raaaaacist.

Eugene Robinson: Crazy Right Wing Talk Is Different From Crazy Left Wing Talk

Have you ever noticed that when Progressives talk about some subject, there is always some sort of exclusionary point? The want higher taxes, but, not for themselves. They want globull warming laws, but, not for themselves. They want national health care, but not for unions and other left wing groups and companies. And

(Washington Post) Not all overheated political rhetoric is alike. Delusional right-wing crazy talk — the kind of ranting we’ve heard recently from washed-up rock star Ted Nugent and Tea Party-backed Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) — is a special kind of poison that cannot be safely ignored.

Let me be clear: I’m saying that the extreme language we hear from the far right is qualitatively different from the extreme language we hear from the far left — and far more damaging to the ties that bind us as a nation. Tut-tutting that both sides should tone it down is meaningless. For all intents and purposes, one side is the problem.

This is nothing new: lefties have almost always given themselves a free pass to engage in “delusional crazy talk”. Kinda like a Meth-head saying there is nothing wrong with themselves doing Meth, but others should avoid it.

This is how Obama gets a free pass after sitting in the pews listening to hate pastor Jeremiah Wright and consorting with unrepentant domestic terrorist Bill Ayers. This is how Obama gets a free pass while attacking American citizens. This is how Democrats mostly got a free pass for advocating for the assassination, or at least the death, of George W. Bush. This is how Bill Mahr gets away with calling Sarah Palin a “c*nt”. This is how Occupy gets away with violent behavior and rapes. And so on.

Democrats never want to be held to the same standard the espouse.
