Eugene Robinson: Crazy Right Wing Talk Is Different From Crazy Left Wing Talk

Have you ever noticed that when Progressives talk about some subject, there is always some sort of exclusionary point? The want higher taxes, but, not for themselves. They want globull warming laws, but, not for themselves. They want national health care, but not for unions and other left wing groups and companies. And

(Washington Post) Not all overheated political rhetoric is alike. Delusional right-wing crazy talk — the kind of ranting we’ve heard recently from washed-up rock star Ted Nugent and Tea Party-backed Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) — is a special kind of poison that cannot be safely ignored.

Let me be clear: I’m saying that the extreme language we hear from the far right is qualitatively different from the extreme language we hear from the far left — and far more damaging to the ties that bind us as a nation. Tut-tutting that both sides should tone it down is meaningless. For all intents and purposes, one side is the problem.

This is nothing new: lefties have almost always given themselves a free pass to engage in “delusional crazy talk”. Kinda like a Meth-head saying there is nothing wrong with themselves doing Meth, but others should avoid it.

This is how Obama gets a free pass after sitting in the pews listening to hate pastor Jeremiah Wright and consorting with unrepentant domestic terrorist Bill Ayers. This is how Obama gets a free pass while attacking American citizens. This is how Democrats mostly got a free pass for advocating for the assassination, or at least the death, of George W. Bush. This is how Bill Mahr gets away with calling Sarah Palin a “c*nt”. This is how Occupy gets away with violent behavior and rapes. And so on.

Democrats never want to be held to the same standard the espouse.

Queen Nancy Wants Amendment To Remove Free Speech From Corporations

I hope Pelosi and the Dems go through with it: it’d be amusing seeing a several hundred page constitutional amendment put up for a vote

(CNS News) House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday endorsed a movement announced by other congressional Democrats on Wednesday to ratify an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow Congress to regulate political speech when it is engaged in by corporations as opposed to individuals.

Pelosi said the Democrats’ effort to amend the Constitution is part of a three-pronged strategy that also includes promoting the DISCLOSE Act, which would increase disclosure requirements for organizations running political ads, and “reducing the roll of money in campaigns” (which some Democrats have said can be done through taxpayer funding of campaigns).

“I’ve introduced a People’s Rights Amendment, which is very simple and straightforward,” Rep. Jim McGovern (D.-Mass.) said at the forum. “It would make clear that all corporate entities, for-profit and non-profit alike, are not people with constitutional rights.

In actuality, the proposed amendment is rather short

Section 1.  We the people who ordain and establish this Constitution intend the rights protected by this Constitution to be the rights of natural persons.

Section 2.  People, person, or persons as used in this Constitution does not include corporations, limited liability companies or other corporate entities established by the laws of any state, the United States, or any foreign state, and such corporate entities are subject to such regulation as the people, through their elected state and federal representatives, deem reasonable and are otherwise consistent with the powers of Congress and the States under this Constitution.

Section 3.  Nothing contained herein shall be construed to limit the people’s rights of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, free exercise of religion, and such other rights of the people, which rights are inalienable.

Actually, it would limit freedom of the press

Television and radio networks, newspapers, publishing houses, movie studios and think tanks, as well as political action committees, are usually organized as, or elements of, corporations.

So are unions. And organizations like MoveOn.org, Media Matters, and the Center for American Progress. La Raza. NAACP. Project Vote. The list keeps going on and on.

Blogs would likewise be exposed to regulation by the Central Government. That includes liberal blogs. Many could charitably be called “corporations” via this amendment. Free speech could be restricted for anyone who works for a corporation. The imprecision of the language of the proposed amendment leaves it up to the states and federal government to provide definitions.

The GOP should make the Democrats put their money where their mouths are and force a vote in the Senate and the House on this, because, really, Democrats have no real intention to do anything more than talk about this proposed amendment: it’s a way of rallying the base and creating chaos.

Senate Democrats: Work Is Too Hard So Why Bother?

Yesterday I mentioned that Senate Democrats were punting on producing a budget for the 3rd straight year. Now, via Ed Morrissey from Guy Benson comes this photo

Ed explains

This picture comes from yesterday’s so-called “mark-up session” of the Senate Budget Committee, a meeting which chair Kent Conrad helpfully promoted by declaring that he wouldn’t allow any votes to be taken on budgets. That turned the meeting into nothing more than a discussion forum, one that Conrad’s colleagues decided to skip. The picture, taken by a Republican staffer at the meeting, shows all 11 Republicans sitting on the far side of the table —and almost no Democrats in their chairs…

Apparently, even pretend governance is hard.

Grist: “U.S. cleantech support about to fall off a cliff “

Resident Grist Warmist David Roberts says this graph should “make your blood run cold” (via Tom Nelson)

That’s from a new report — “Beyond Boom and Bust: Putting Clean Tech on a Path to Subsidy Independence” — from folks at the Breakthrough Institute, Brookings Institution, and World Resources Institute. It’s a welcome and much-needed attempt to put some numbers behind the debate over federal cleantech support.

It’s divided into three parts. The first tells the story of cleantech policy over the last five years. Early in his term, Obama unleashed a ton of support for cleantech, mainly via the stimulus bill, but also by funding some programs from the Bush era and earlier. At around $150 billion, federal cleantech spending from 2009-2014 will amount to over three times what was spent from 2002-2008. But that funding is dropping off a cliff:

Basically, what is being highlighted is that the “cleantech” industry cannot survive without government support in the manner of massive amounts of cash. Which, IMO, is a shame, because it would be a Good Thing to expand our energy supply out to these alternatives. But, cleantech can’t survive without this massive infusion of taxpayer money, which we’ve seen not just here in the US, but in Europe, as well. The private sector is rather cool towards investing in these projects when government doesn’t. The private sector has also gone cold on investing in these projects, because there never seems to be a return on investment.

But, Dave makes a good point based on another graph from the report, which shows the massive amounts of money that went into deployment while much, much less went to R&D and manufacturing: namely, cleantech that barely works is being deployed. If we build these windfarms and solar farms and products like the Chevy Volt that are essentially valueless, we’re just dumping money down the drain. Or, better, we’re just giving it to companies that were Obama and Democrat campaign contributors as payback.

If we’re going to spend tens of billions on cleantech, let’s do it so that R&D is performed so that the products are useful, produce large amounts of power, and produce inexpensive energy. Oh, and don’t fall down when it’s windy. Instead, part of Obama’s method was to simply be shown as “doing something”, yet, most of these projects are abject failures, and will cost the taxpayers even more to continue operation. There is no return on investment.

Obama: “Prosperity Grows From People With No Money”

Yes, he was throwing down one his well used class warfare cards

(Washington Times) Two days after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the White House’s “Buffett rule,” a proposed tax increase on millionaires, President Obama used the rejection to rally supporters in swing-state Ohio and paint himself as a champion of the middle class.

“In this country, prosperity doesn’t trickle down,” the president told a crowd of about 400 on hand for a speech Wednesday at Lorain County Community College in Elyria. “Prosperity grows from the bottom up and it grows from a strong middle class out.

In Obama’s Magical Unicorn World money apparently just appears under poor people’s pillows. Those eeeeevil rich people spreading it around is just a silly notion. Granted, not everyone becomes rich because some rich entity gave them money, just consider Obama: he made a ton of money thru middle class people paying for his books, which ……. wouldn’t have been published and distributed without an eeeeevil rich publishing house publishing it and giving him a nice advance.

If prosperity grows from the bottom up, why are there historic numbers of people on food stamps and government assistance in the reign of Emperor Obama?

“I’m saying you make a million dollars a year … you should at least pay the same percentage in income tax as middle-class families do,” Mr. Obama said. “That helps us afford being able to say to the 98 percent of families who make $250,000 a year or less, ‘Your taxes won’t go up.’ “

The rate is a canard: someone paying 15% of a million dollars pays more actual money to the IRS than someone who pays 22% on $50,000. I’d hope Obama really knows this and is simply playing a class warfare card, but you never know. Furthermore, those eeeeevil rich people get to net tax rates partly buy making charitable donations, which tends to benefit Americans. It would be better to do away with many tax breaks, such as ones that allow money earned in the United States to be sheltered overseas. Simplify the tax code.

Despite the president’s rhetoric, a September report by the nonpartisan Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation shows that the wealthy, on average, already pay the most taxes at far higher rates than the middle class.

The report lists individual income tax rates by salary bracket, showing those making less than $200,000 paying no more than a 9.5 percent rate for individual income taxes while those making more than $1 million pay an average effective rate of 22.2 percent.

Wait, what? Damned facts.

Climate Change (Hoax) Causes Lake Erie’s Water Level To Fall To Just Above Historic Norms

Another Alarmist meme bites the dust, though I’m sure they’ll tell us “it could happen!!!!!1!!!” in 50-100 years

(ABC Cleveland) Over the past dozen or so years, there has been a lot of buzz in the media about the Great Lakes water levels. Scientists have made repeated claims that the Great Lakes are drying up due to global warming/climate change/climate disruption.

Back in 2003, the Union of Concerned Scientists published a “fact sheet” stating just that. “Lake levels are expected to decline in Lake Erie as more moisture evaporates due to warmer temperatures and less ice cover,” says the report. “Rainfall cannot compensate for the drying effects of a warmer climate, especially in the summer.”

And, according the Warmists, things get into the Everybody Panic!!!!! realm. But, science!

Lets examine the data. According to the April Great Lakes water level report from the Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Erie’s water level is ABOVE the long term April average.

Yes, I said water levels are above normal.

Lake Erie’s long term (1901-2010) April average water level is 174.22 meters. As of April 1, 2012, Lake Erie’s water level was 174.36. The graph included with this story shows water levels for our shallowest great lake over the past 100 Aprils. Notice the ebb and flow of water levels by decade. Also notice the lowest lake level was back in 1934! We are nowhere near record low water levels.

The writer, Mark Johnson, goes on to show that all of the Great Lakes are above average. But, you know, that’s probably because of climate change, which causes everything.

Globull Warming Dead Last In Latest Gallup Environmental Poll

Most American’s couldn’t give a rats derriere about it

(Gallup) Gallup asked Americans to say how much they worry about each of seven environmental problems. All show significantly less worry today than in 2000, when worry was at or near its high point for each item. The declines in concern about drinking-water pollution and air pollution are the largest for the problems included in this year’s poll.

Only 30% care about globull warming “a great deal”. And other environmental issues are down

Gallup offers some explanations

There are two likely explanations for the declining concern. First, Americans are a bit more positive now than they have been in the past about the quality of the environment. Second, the economic downturn has forced Americans to focus more on bread-and-butter economic issues than quality-of-life issues. It may be no coincidence that environmental concern was highest in 2000, when the U.S. was enjoying one of the strongest economies in recent memory, and that environmental concern has reached new lows recently, after the worst financial downturn in the last 25 years.

The first is interesting, because people surely understand that the environmental conditions of clean air, water, and land are better than they have been in several hundred years. Unfortunately, another explanation for the dropping numbers goes back to globull warming, in that the Warmists have stuck every real environmental issue under the banner of anthropogenic global warming and continuously over-reached on their rhetoric, on beating their drums too hard, on condescending and abusing people, and have turned people’s cares away from those real issues. I’ve said before, this is one of the reasons I despise the AGW meme, because it does distract from those issues. For every one of those other issues, I do worry, maybe not always a great deal, but certainly more than a fair amount. There’s nothing wrong with being concerned. And Warmists have ruined these issues.
