This is just, wow. I was looking to see exactly where the full breach occurred in Bay Head, and noticed that Google had updated with shots going all from NY down to Virginia along the coast. You have to click the for “post Sandy imagery” to see the damage, which also allows before and after shots. Hearbreaking. Here’s that Bay Head shot, which reminds me of what happens on the Outer Banks all the time, but you don’t expect in NJ

Route 35, a major road along the beach, is toast going from Bay Head down.

That sand is at least 2 feet deep (Manasquan, NJ, right up along 1st Avenue and the Manasquan Inlet).

I posted a picture from the same spot the other day, looking the other way. That roof is from a gazebo that once stood on those pilings. There used to be a lot more sand, like several feet worth, rising above those pilings all the way on the left in a berm. Hell, I never knew they were there. I bet most people who go to the Inlet beach had no idea.

Wasn’t just yesterday that Obama gave a speech in which he said that “Americans are coming together” during the Sandy cleanup during a stump speech? How’s that working out? (via American Perspective)
(WAFF) The hurricane-ravaged east coast has been receiving north Alabama help, but crews from Huntsville Utilities learned they’ll be doing work in Long Island, New York instead of in New Jersey.
Crews from Huntsville, as well as Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can’t do any work there since they’re not union employees.
The crews that are in Roanoke, Virginia say they are just watching and waiting even though they originally received a call asking for help from Seaside Heights, New Jersey.
One would think Seaside, which was hit terribly bad, would take any help they could get. Alas, no.

They really cannot help themselves
(HuffPo) The devastation left the state a blank canvas to redevelop its prized vacation towns. But environmentalists and shoreline planners urged the state to think about how –and if –to redevelop the shoreline as it faces an even greater threat of extreme weather.
He and other shoreline advocates say the state should consider how to protect coastal areas from furious storms when they rebuild it, such as relocating homes and businesses farther from the shore, building more seawalls and keeping sand dunes high.
There’s lots of whining about sea rise…everytime I’m up in Jersey it looks the same as when I was growing up there. But what the environweenies really want is to implement controls on other people in regards to homes and businesses and how they can be rebuilt, putting their own enviroweenie stamp on the process.
Chris Christie has told them to go pound sand. On a related note, it might be a good idea to bury lots of the power and phone lines. Of course, the Shore is not much above sea level, and is always in danger from flooding with salt water.
