Watcha Reading?

Well, let’s see now. I never did start on Darkest Hour (The Lockman Chronicles #3), but I will eventually read it. Instead, I went with A Line In The Sand by Justin Burgess, and excellent book about what happens if the US turns against the military, treating military members and veterans with a complete lack of respect, and a man rises to be President who guts the military. But, there is a conspiracy (won’t tell you more). It involves several characters, most especially a military member railroaded for having a gun (which are mostly illegal, especially for military members and vets). I got it when it was free, but worth it for $3.99 at Amazon.

Finished that, now on to Outside Context Problem, an interesting book in the vein of Larry Niven’s Footfall and Harry Turtledove’s Worldwar series. It’s not the greatest writing style (not that I could do better), a bit sophomoric, but the overall concept is excellent, as are the characters, the plot, and the buildup.

What’s on your radar.

Bummer: AGW May Have No Impact On Tropical Lizards

The same lizards that survived through previous cool and warm (much warmer than today) periods, as well as the last glacial period. It’s almost like they adapt to survive climatic changes or something

(Science) A new Dartmouth College study finds human-caused climate change may have little impact on many species of tropical lizards, contradicting a host of recent studies that predict their widespread extinction in a rapidly warming planet.

The findings appear in the journal Global Change Biology.

Most predictions that tropical cold-blooded animals, especially forest lizards, will be hard hit by climate change are based on global-scale measurements of environmental temperatures, which miss much of the fine-scale variation in temperature that individual animals experience on the ground, said the article’s lead author, Michael Logan, a Ph.D. student in ecology and evolutionary biology.

You mean lizards are able to survive in a range of temps? Weird.

The overall results suggest that global-scale predictions generated using low-resolution temperature data may overestimate the vulnerability of many tropical lizards to climate change.

Life on Earth is able to survive in a wide range of temps. Look at your fish tank. If the temps change a degree or two do the fish immediately die? Or, is thermometer in a wider range? I’ve had tanks for decades, from big to small. Fish do fine in a range between 68 and 82. That’s short term. In the long term, life adapts. Warmists attempt to create studies with “low-resolution variability” in order to make doom worthy prognostications. The reality of life on Earth says different.

PS: Ye Olde NY Times editorial board is whining about “climate change” and hitting CO2 at 400ppm, failing to note that it did not happen. And they really want Obama to use executive action, something they were dead set against when President Bush was in office.

And, dangnabit all, they still use fossil fueled vehicles to deliver their tree killing editions, and refuse to do away with their air conditioning.

Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

The posts do take a long time, so, if you want to send me your links for Rule 5 babeage or links, use ye olde email in the header bar (remove the NOSPAM part). Preferably, create the html link so I can copy and paste how you want it to read.

Who Knew “Smart Power” Also Applied To Obama’s Domestic Policy

We jump in the wayback machine, and learn that “smart power” was the Obama/Hillary Clinton term for how America was going to deal with the world. It is defined by the Center for Strategic and International Studies as “an approach that underscores the necessity of a strong military, but also invests heavily in alliances, partnerships, and institutions of all levels to expand American influence and establish legitimacy of American action.” In other words, a bunch of gobbledygook, substituting a cute phrase for actual productive action. Sure, he’s had a few wins, getting Osama, following Bush’s Iraq exit plan to a tee, launching drone strikes on jihadis from the Horn of Africa to Pakistan, and, um, ah, er, that’s pretty much it. The rest has been anywhere from much ado over nothing to miserable failure. Which, while the Washington Post’s Dan Balz doesn’t put it in those terms, is what he is implying

Obama’s trust-in-government deficit

Whatever else happens as a result of the multiple controversies that have engulfed the administration, one thing is clear: President Obama has failed to meet one of the most important goals he set out when he was first elected, which was to demonstrate that activist government could also be smart government.

Early on Obama had stated that it wasn’t so much about the size of the government, but “whether we have a smart, effective government”. How’s that working out?

This weekend, four of the government’s most important agencies are beset by political controversy, management breakdowns or both: State (what happened in Benghazi, Libya), Treasury (targeting of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service), Justice (leak-related investigation of the Association Press) and Defense (rising numbers of sexual assaults).

We could easily add a long list of idiocracy to that list, things like Fast and Furious, wasting $850 billion on stimulus, abuse of power, and others. You also have the shakedown of businesses by HHS head Kathleen Sebilius, and the dismal implementation of ObamaCare.

Balz offers up a bit of criticism for Republicans in Congress (surprise!), then

But Obama bears a particular responsibility for failing to do what he said he had to do, which was to convince the public that he could make the part of government that he directly controls — the executive branch — smarter, more effective and more deserving of trust.

Early in his presidency, Obama convened a meeting with a group of historians. The topic he put on the table was: What does it take to be a transformational president? Obama’s ambition to be such a figure could be seen in his first-term agenda, which included a major economic stimulus package, a bailout of the auto industry, a major financial regulatory reform package and, biggest of all, the law that is transforming the nation’s health-care industry.

Obama held a meeting with historians because he is the most narcissistic President ever, and that’s saying quite a bit. One must have a bit of self love to voluntarily run for president, but with Obama, the love stops there. He refuses to change to do what is best for the country in the real world. He thinks his college level bull session ideas are The Best And Should Be Implemented And Followed Because He Knows Best.

But his health law is still unpopular, and it’s implementation is unwieldy, to say the least. The auto bailout is a mixed success, but we saw a partisan position in which dealerships were closed. Stimulus may or may not have prevented a full blown depression, but it was the wrong prescription for economic repair and growth, with so many problems there isn’t time to list them all. Dodd-Frank did not address the fundamental problems with the industry nor housing loans.

The full political impact of what is unfolding now may not be clear until closer to the 2014 elections. Obama has been damaged, but how much? Republicans are on the offensive but risk overplaying their hand out of deep dislike for this president. But no matter how the electoral politics turn out, Obama’s goal of creating confidence in bigger government has taken a big hit.

Obama does have a few wins domestically. He, um, well, er, won re-election! And some minor pieces of legislation. He got tax increases on those making $400k and more, but he wanted $200k as the number. He demonized his opponents, both in government and the privates sector. He treats those who do not buy his vision not as opponents, but as enemies. By the time he tried to reach out early in 2013, it was too late. If you kick a dog long enough, it will bite you when you offer it a bone. There are lots of terms one can use to describe Obama’s management style (some best reserved for rants with your car stereo blasting): he’s a bystander, he leads from behind, disengaged, he’s absent. But you can’t describe him as either a true leader (in workplace terms) or even a competent manager (again, in workplace terms). He does set a tone with his conduct and words, and that tone is destructive and counter-productive to any notion of “smart government”.

As We Come Into Beach Season, Please, People, Clean Up Your Garbage

As I’ve said numerous times, just because I do not agree with man-induced “climate change” doesn’t mean I hate the environment. From my favorite New Climate Denier website, Grist (yeah, I cite them a lot)

Back in 2012, 561,633 very nice people went out on beaches around the world and picked up the trash that other people had thrown there. They picked up an astounding 10 million pounds. That’s the weight of 5,000 cars. It’s heavier than the Capitol dome.

What’s even more astounding is that this isn’t even the most trash the Ocean Conservancy has collected in the 27 years this challenge has been going. Twice before, volunteers collected more than this amount of trash, measured in weight, and once before, they collected more total items.

That first link in the excerpt goes to Treehugger (another of my favorites), which notes that this is the weight of 41 Blue whales. And here’s a summary of what was picked up

  • 2,117,931 cigarette butts
  • 1,140,222 food wrappers / containers
  • 1,065,171 plastic bottles
  • 1,019,902 plastic bags
  • 958,893 caps, lids
  • 692,767 cups, plates, forks, knives, spoons
  • 611,048 straws, stirrers
  • 521,730 glass bottles
  • 339,875 beverage cans
  • 298,332 paper bags

Also, 117 mattresses, 40 lottery tickets, and almost 2,500 sports balls.

So, when you head to the beach this year, pick your garbage and stuff up. Bring a garbage bag to put it in (and properly dispose of the bag). Don’t leave your cigarettes on the beach. If the beach allows smoking, bring something, like a used bottle, to put them out in. Don’t throw them in the ocean. As a smoker, I have no problem with banning smoking on the beach (I don’t do drugs, I rarely drink even beer, and I’ve reduced the amount I smoke to half a pack a day. Working towards quitting….hey, let’s see you give up drinking or another guilty pleasure, OK?). It always drove me nuts when I lived at the beach in NJ and would see, or step on, garbage. Clean it up! Better yet, do not leave it there.

No matter how you look at, doing our part for the environment is a good thing. Don’t destroy it.

Good Grief: Obama Visits Pre-K Class To Get Ideas On Fixing Economy

In an attempt to change the discourse from his scandal plagued reign, Peter Obama has pivoted back to the economy yet again during his Weekly Address

Hi, everybody.  Over the past few months, I’ve laid out a series of commonsense ideas to reignite the true engine of our economic growth: a rising, thriving middle class.

The way I see it, there are three areas where we need to focus.  One: making America a magnet for good jobs.  Two: making sure our workers have the education and skills they need to do those jobs.  And three: making sure your hard work leads to a decent living.

I’ve also been visiting cities across the country that are doing some interesting and creative things along these lines.

I read with young kids in a pre-K program, where kids are getting a head start learning the skills they’ll need to succeed in life.

And our deficits are shrinking at the fastest rate in decades.  But now we need to budget in a smarter way that doesn’t hurt middle-class families or harm critical investments in our future.

Deficits he jacked to record levels, and now he’s trying to deflect from his SCOAMFness. If you ate fatty burgers at McDonald’s ever day for a year, jacking your triglycerides up to obscene and life threatening levels, then brought them down a few points, that wouldn’t be a cause for celebration.

And I’m going to keep trying to work with both parties in Washington to make progress on your priorities.

Colorado Sheriffs File Federal Lawsuit Over Gun Laws

Nice to know that some in law enforcement will not bow to the pressure and will support the 2nd Amendment Rights of law abiding citizens

(Fox News) Colorado sheriffs upset with gun restrictions adopted in the aftermath of last year’s mass shootings filed a federal lawsuit Friday, challenging the regulations as unconstitutional.

The lawsuit involves sheriffs from 54 of Colorado’s 64 counties, most representing rural, gun-friendly areas of the state.

The sheriffs say the new state laws violate Second Amendment protections that guarantee the right to keep and bear arms. Opponents are criticizing the lawsuit as political maneuvering.

The filing targets Colorado laws that limit the size of ammunition magazines and expand background checks. The regulations passed the Legislature this spring and are set to take effect July 1.

Most of the gun laws pushed by Democrats (who are against other citizens owning guns, yet typically won’t give up their own guns) would have little to no effect on nutbags who want to kill, like the Aurora shooter James Holmes. Heck, ban “large capacity magazines”? Make them. One can easily manufacture them.

A disarmed nation is a docile nation, at least for the law abiding citizens.

The law enforcement community is divided on the issue. In contrast to the sheriffs, the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police, which includes urban departments, supports the laws. The chiefs said the measures were “common-sense approaches” to protect the public “while not taking guns from law-abiding citizens in any way.”

When you read or hear people talking in that manner, you know that the idea is to take guns away from law-abiding citizens. “Common sense” seems to be a way to work around the Constitution.

Saturday Obama Scandals

I highly doubt whether anyone will obtain information linking Obama to either the IRS or phone records scandal. Say what you will about his “governance” style, but the man is able to keep his hands clean. Surely no emails, phone records, or paper records will link him, nor will anyone say “yup, Obama (or one of his advisors) ordered this”. What Obama does is create an atmosphere as the Executive Branch head of underlings doing what they want and thinking that it is A-OK to do things like target political opponents and go on fishing expeditions with press phone records

(Washington Post) The firestorm buffeting the Internal Revenue Service intensified Friday as lawmakers began what they promised would be an extensive effort to learn whether there was any political motivation or White House involvement in the agency’s recently acknowledged misdeeds.

Fueling those concerns, J. Russell George, the Treasury Department’s top tax watchdog, said Friday he had informed top Treasury officials starting last spring (June, to be exact) about problems related to the special attention the agency was paying some conservative organizations seeking tax-exempt status. George said he shared the information with the Treasury’s general counsel in June and with Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal S. Wolin “shortly thereafter.”

Such a timeline could be significant, as Republicans have been trying to establish how early the Obama administration learned about the agency’s conduct, which officials were informed and whether the coming 2012 presidential election affected their response.

Did the general counsel not inform the head of Treasury, Tim “Turbo Tax” Geithner? If not, why? This would certainly have risen to the level where the the agency head would Need To Know. Or, has Obama created an atmosphere where department heads are left out of the loop? In a private organization, something this bad would rise further so that measures could be taken. In the Obama admin, it seems that there was little to no oversight and that appointed officials wanted no part in doing their duties.

(Fox News) Devereaux is among a group of activists, being represented by the American Center for Law and Justice, who are preparing to sue the federal government for the practice of targeting Tea Party groups. ACLJ Executive Director Jordan Sekulow told FoxNews.com he’ll likely file the civil suits next Wednesday or Thursday on behalf of more than a dozen Tea Party groups who say they were singled out by the IRS and had their tax-exempt status severely delayed or denied altogether.

Good for them. Many, if not most, of these groups are still waiting for the tax exempt status, after dealing with all the shenanigans and un-Constitutional machinations from the IRS. And, let’s not forget that many were worried if they stood up for the targeted groups, they themselves would be targeted. This is the atmosphere that Obama has created with his constant demonization and targeting of political enemies (to O, they appear to be enemies, not opponents). We can see that the apparent coordination behind the targeting makes the notion that this was just a few low level IRS employees engaging in wrong-doing laughable.

Over to the AP phone records issue

(Fox News) Americans were in danger.

That was the chief argument Attorney General Eric Holder tried to make this week for why Justice Department officials seized two months’ worth of phone records of reporters and editors at The Associated Press.

But the AP has strongly refuted from the start claims that it put the country in danger. The accusation that the news organization risked national security isn’t sitting so well with other journalists and lawmakers who have started pushing back on the claims.

Obama officials discussed the incident the day after the AP report was published. John Brennan, the White House counter terrorism adviser at the time, went on Good Morning America and announced that Americans were never in danger from the Al Qaeda plot. And the AP, along with other media outlets, are not happy with the notion that sources may clam up if they are worried that the US Government will retaliate with operations such as grabbing phone records as a fishing expedition.

But, we know Liberals are worried when they start making silly pronouncements, such as Excitable Dana Milbank, who seems more concerned with Republicans making dire pronouncements about Obama than about this obvious chilling of 1st Amendment Rights

At the end of a truly dismal week in his presidency, President Obama remains lucky in one crucial category: his opposition.

It has been only a few days since two administration scandals — the IRS harassment of conservative groups and the Justice Department’s seizure of Associated Press phone records — dropped into the Republicans’ lap. But instead of turning public outrage to their advantage, Republicans have already begun overreaching, turning legitimate areas of inquiry into just some more partisan food fights.

He lists several Republicans who have said mean things about Obama, such as

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Tex.) referred to Obama as “a tyrannical despot” and said: “This is the way a tyrannical government comes into being and perpetuates itself.”

Of course, Milbank forgets to tell us why this is wrong. He’s just doing his job as a little Obamazombie to protect Obama. But, hey, I remember a time when the press, both reporters and opinion writers, failed to have a problem with Democrats accusing the president of making/letting 9/11 happen, wishing that Operation Iraqi Freedom would fail, calling the president a loser, talking of impeachment, whining about the Downing Street Papers, accusing the president of “rushing to war”, accusing him of failing to protect the country, and so many other bits. Where was Milbank then?

Democrats also do not like when issues are turned political when Democrats are in the target scope. They can dish it out but they can’t take it.
