Hooray! California OKs Licenses For Illegals, Restricts Gun Ownership

It’s hard to believe what an upside down nation we have become, especially in the People’s Republik Of California

(LA Times) Laboring late into the night Thursday to finish their work for the year, state lawmakers acted to allow many more immigrants who are in the country illegally to obtain California driver’s licenses, a measure Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to sign.

The driver’s license measure would significantly expand the number of immigrants in the country illegally who could have such documents. Some young, undocumented residents are already eligible for licenses under state law, if they qualify for temporary federal work permits.

“This bill will enable millions of people to get to work safely and legally,” Brown said in a statement issued immediately after the bill passed. “Hopefully, it will send a message to Washington that immigration reform is long past due.”

I’m sure you’re thinking exactly what I’m thinking: there should be no need for them to get to work safely and legally, because they shouldn’t be in the country in the first place. Interestingly, the licenses will have a special designation of DP (drivers privilege) yet no one is pitching a fit, like they did for North Carolina’s plan.

Legislators also moved to expand the state’s already stringent gun controls, voting to outlaw sales of rifles with detachable magazines and enlarge the list of crimes that result in a 10-year ban on possession of firearms.

Under SB 374, by Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), those who already own assault weapons without fixed magazines would be required to register them by July 1, 2014. A second bill, by state Sen. Lois Wolk (D-Davis), would expand the list of crimes that could disqualify Californians from possessing guns.

The bill would restrict ownership of some 95% of rifles in production, ones which are rarely, if ever, used in crime, but used quite a bit for hunting. I’d love to tell you what the expanded list of crimes are, but the web address for the bill, and, the root address for the website to see all legislative action, is down. So is the website for the California legislature. And, the website for the California governor. Sheesh, it seems every website run by the government of California is down. I guess someone forgot to pay the bill.

Met Office: Hey, Did We Mention That One Year Of Arctic Cooling Isn’t Significant?

You really do have to love Warmists. When one little weather event occurs, they hyperventilate and claim that this is proof, PROOOOOOOOOOOOF!!!!!!! that Someone Else driving a fossil fueled vehicle and flushing their toilet too much caused it. When things do not work out, their first step is to say “meh”

(Met Office)Arctic summer sea ice extent has a lot of year to year variability because it can be heavily influenced by weather patterns:

– temperatures naturally vary from one year to the next;
– the amount of cloud can affect the amount of surface melting;
– summer storms can also break up ice, which can accelerate the melting process;
– settled conditions can be more conducive to ice forming;
– winds may act to spread out the ice or push it together.

Due to this high degree of variability, it’s important to look past short term fluctuations in sea ice extent and look at the longer records.

Hmm, so nature can affect being colder, but not being warmer?

The seasonal minimum (September) ice extent has declined at the faster rate of 11% per decade, and this rate of decline has accelerated in the past 15 years.

Since there’s been a pause in warming for over 15 years, might there be something else at play?

So all the evidence suggests the long-term decline of Arctic sea ice continues.

2013 was supposed to be the year the Arctic was ice free. Warmists prognostication and “computer models” stated that this huge growth couldn’t happen. Step two will be to provide talking points stating that this is Arctic rebound was completely within what they predicted

“We know sea ice extent is going to vary from year to year due to weather conditions and that’s not at all inconsistent with the overall decline in extent. You wouldn’t expect to see records broken year after year, so this ‘recovery’ is not unexpected.

Step three will be to Blame Mankind when the ice continues to grow.

Carney: It’s A Good Thing That Obama’s Not Decisive

Well, in all fairness, it is incredibly difficult for Jay Carney to defend Obama when Obama’s been flipping and flopping, zigging and zagging, playing some golf, changing his mind, blamestorming, dropping the ball and responsibility in Congresses lap, playing golf, walking back John Kerry’s comments, walking them forward, walking them back, agreeing with Putin, getting tough, getting weak, giving a speech which was the fruit of his incompetence, rinse, lather, repeat

(Roll Call) President Barack Obama’s Syria strategy may not have been particularly decisive, but that’s not a bad thing, according to the White House.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney defended his boss Thursday after a blistering few weeks of criticism in Congress and elsewhere over his handling of the Syria crisis.

Carney said the American people “appreciate a president who doesn’t celebrate decisiveness for decisiveness’ sake.” He also said Americans like that Obama is open to “new information” and adjusts his course accordingly.

Carney said that in the end, the president will deserve credit if the diplomatic initiative with Russia to get Syria to give up its chemical weapons arsenal succeeds.

Well, you do have to hand it to Obama, he is decisive when it comes to Blamestorming, particularly Republicans, and we all know that if the “diplomatic initiative” blows up….which it probably will, based on Obama’s history of coming to an agreement then demanding more, along with denigrating the people he’s negotiating with….he will Blame Others.

Maybe Obama should read this article on overcoming incisiveness. As for the rest of us, we should understand that people who wear mom jeans are flighty, emotional, and prone to change their minds on a whim, much like little girls playing with dolls.

I Didn’t Realize AIDS Was Caused By Globull Warming

Some Warmaweenies are proclaiming that “climate change”, ie, you driving your fossil fueled vehicle (not me, of course) is causing all sorts of diseases to make the blood supply bad, because disease, like, say, the Black Plague which killed around 75 million people during the Little Ice Age period, never happened before the combustion engine, and mosquitoes which could carry disease suddenly popped into existence in 1980 (via Junk Science)

(E&E News) A whole new set of ungovernable pathogens are being loosed on the world’s blood supplies. A warming climate has allowed blood-borne tropical diseases to flourish where once they were unheard of, and they’re getting around.

The state of blood supplies became worrisome after tennis star Arthur Ashe’s death from AIDS 20 years ago in 1993 — the result of an HIV-tainted transfusion administered during a routine heart bypass operation in the late 1980s.

Surprise! Obama Going Hard After Coal Plants

What does he care if this causes you, the peasant, to suffer?

(Bloomberg) Representatives of coal-intensive utilities and coal-producing regions said that President Barack Obama would effectively outlaw construction of new power plants using the fuel with pending environmental rules.

The Environmental Protection Agency is revising proposed rules from last year in response to opposition by utilities and mining companies. The new version, under review by White House officials and scheduled for release next week, will be structured differently though it offers little solace to the industry, according to people who have been briefed on the measure and asked not to be identified before its release. (snip)

To deal with the (non-existent) threat (of globull warming), Obama directed the EPA to cap carbon dioxide from power plants, which account for 40 percent of U.S. emissions. The first step is to issue rules for new plants, a proposal set to be released next week. The more contentious rules would govern emissions from existing plants, and those aren’t scheduled to be issued until next year. The rules will be the first of their kind.

Hmm, did Congress, the lawmaking portion of the federal government, give the EPA/Executive Branch the power to decide this? Sadly, they probably did. Not that Obama and his peeps would give a damn, because Republicans won’t stand up en masse to stop him.

Terry Jones Arrested On His Way To Burn Korans

He’s back!

(Orlando Sun Sentinel) Controversial Gainesville Pastor Terry Jones, known for his plans to publicly burn copies of the Muslim holy book, was arrested Wednesday with thousands of kerosene-soaked Qurans, authorities said.

Jones, 61, was arrested on felony charges after a traffic stop near a pharmacy in Mulberry, a small town in Polk County, just before 5 p.m. He faces charges of unlawfully transporting fuel and openly carrying a firearm.

Deputies said Jones was riding in a pickup truck that was towing a smoker and trailer filled with kerosene-soaked Qurans. He also had extra bottles of kerosene inside the truck bed.

According to Jones’ website, he planned to burn 2,998 Qurans in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday. He was arrested along with Associate Pastor Marvin Sapp.

“My detectives had many conversations with Terry Jones prior to today,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday. “He was told he was welcome to come to Polk County and express his First Amendment rights. However, if he violated the law, he would absolutely be arrested and placed in the county jail.

There are many who are saying “yeah, couldn’t happen to a nicer person” and celebrating his arrest. While Jones (I refuse to call him a pastor) is not a nice person, is a wacko and a jerk, to put it mildly, he was going to engage in his 1st Amendment Rights, and the police just happened to stop him and arrest him after warning him. By what law did they stop him? They certainly couldn’t see the gun. What was the traffic stop based on? Police can’t just pull someone over for no reason that they can see. It looks as if Nutjob was intentionally targeted by the police because they did not approved of what he planned to do.

While I personally think he should stop this burning Korans for many reasons, we should all consider the implications of Government interfering with someone engaged in Free Speech and demonstration. Especially Free Speech and demonstration that we disagree with. That’s one of the main points of those clauses, to protect what which we do not disagree with. Oh, and to tell Government “hands off”. The next person stopped and arrested could be you.

I’m sure he will not be charged with a terrorist act, but he should be. He is blatantly and unapologetically trying to incite hostilities against Muslim USians; he is actively trying to create an unsafe environment for them. This behavior should be absolutely intolerable to any society that espouses a belief in equality. No one is equal when serious threats against them are not taken seriously. This fucking guy. Our fucking priorities.

I won’t deny that Jones is being, to continue Melissa’s use of vulgarity, an asshole, but he is also engaged, as mentioned, in 1st Amendment Rights. People like McEwan should be really careful in how they position their view of the 1st, in this case calling it terrorism, because that is a near vertical drop covered in petroleum jelly. What’s good for the goose might just backfire on the gander.

Also, consider that she considers burning Korans a “threat”. Why would this be a “threat”, unless there are people who would get extraordinarily violent? Oh, and considering her views on men and other-than-Muslim religions, she’s one of the last people who should be discussing equality.

Sea World, Trader Joes, Join The “Obamacare Is Bad For Business” Party

(Orlando Sentinel) SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. is reducing hours for thousands of part-time workers, a move that would allow the Orlando-based theme-park owner to avoid offering those employees medical insurance under the federal government’s health-care overhaul.

SeaWorld confirmed the move Monday in a brief written statement to the Orlando Sentinel. The company operates 11 theme parks across the United States and has about 22,000 employees — nearly 18,000 of whom are part-time or seasonal workers. It has more than 4,000 part-time and seasonal workers in Central Florida.

Under a new corporate policy, SeaWorld will schedule part-time workers for no more than 28 hours a week, down from a previous limit of 32 hours a week. The new cap is expected to go into effect by November.

In fairness, Sea World would not state specifically that this move was done to avoid having to provide coverage under Obamacare, but rational thinking adults understand there is no other reason for the move. Then there’s Trader Joe’s

(HuffPo) After extending health care coverage to many of its part-time employees for years, Trader Joe’s has told workers who log fewer than 30 hours a week that they will need to find insurance on the Obamacare exchanges next year, according to a confidential memo from the grocer’s chief executive.

In the memo to staff dated Aug. 30, Trader Joe’s CEO Dan Bane said the company will cut part-timers a check for $500 in January and help guide them toward finding a new plan under the Affordable Care Act. The company will continue to offer health coverage to workers who carry 30 hours or more on average.

It sure seems as if Obamacare is “highly disruptive”. But don’t take my word for it

(Fox News) The AFL-CIO approved a resolution saying that President Obama’s health care overhaul will drive up the costs of union-sponsored health plans to the point that workers and employers are forced to abandon them.

In a strongly worded resolution released Wednesday, the federation said that labor unions still support the Affordable Care Act’s overall goals of reducing health costs and bringing coverage to all Americans, but added that the law is being implemented in a way that is “highly disruptive” to union health care plans.

Strange how no one saw the train wreck coming. The Lonely Conservative provides even more good new on ObamaCare jumping the tracks.

A Silent Hurricane Season Adds Fuel to a Debate Over Global Warming

It’s been quiet this hurricane season — too quiet. Back in May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted a “very active” tropical-storm season, one with between seven and 11 hurricanes. The agency lowered that estimate in August to between six and nine hurricanes, but still predicted that three to five of them would become major storms, with winds above 111 m.p.h.

We’re now a day away from the exact midpoint of the Atlantic hurricane season, the period when storm activity is historically at its strongest — Sept. 10 — and so far we’ve experienced … nothing. While there have been a handful of tropical storms, we have yet to see a single hurricane — a tropical cyclone with sustained winds of at least 74 m.p.h. This is extremely unusual, and if the calm continues, 2013 could rival 2002, which didn’t experience its first hurricane until Sept. 11. What gives?

What gives is that natural variability happens. Just like the way the Modern Warm Period is mostly natural, Mother Nature creates periods where there is a dearth of tropical storms.

The truth is that scientists aren’t really sure why there hasn’t been a hurricane yet this season, nor do they know why an intense hurricane — Category 3, 4, 5 — hasn’t made landfall in the U.S. since Wilma all the way back in 2005. (Sandy, for all the damage it did, was barely a Category 1 storm by the time it made landfall along the East Coast.) And as Andrew Revkin reported in the New York Times, leaked drafts of the forthcoming Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) seem to reflect a reduced scientific certainty that global warming will make storms stronger and more frequent. In the 2007 report, the IPCC saidthat it was more likely than not — a greater than 50% certainty in the panel’s terminology — that human activity was contributing to an observed intensification of hurricane activity in some parts of the world. Now the IPCC — or at least the draft — says it has “low confidence” of that relationship, which means it believes that there is only a 2-out-of-10 chance of being correct. The estimated probability that the 21st century will see more intense hurricane activity has fallen as well.

First, it has been 7 years and almost 8 months since Wilma, the last major hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. Second, Sandy was actually just below hurricane strength when it made landfall (it was still destructive, like any tropical storm, especially when combined with a big cold front). Third, the IPCC and other Warmists first predicted that the 2005 season was the new normal. When that didn’t happen, they said there wouldn’t necessarily be more hurricanes, but the ones that formed would be stronger. That failed, so Warmists are now trying to say that the lack of landfalling tropical systems, particularly hurricanes, is also a sign of human induced “climate change”.

Of course, Bryan ends the article with standard Warmist hysteria, but, hey, they can’t help themselves, and Bryan did make the point that the New Climate Denier scientists are clueless.
