Irony: Gun Control Advocate Busted For Handgun At School

Hoist on his own petard

(Daily Caller) A Buffalo, N.Y. community activist who is well known locally for pushing for a highly restrictive 2013 gun control law has been arrested for — wait for it — carrying a gun illegally at a public elementary school.

The arrested gun-control advocate, Dwayne Ferguson, caused quite a scene at Harvey Austin Elementary School, reports local CBS affiliate WIVB.

At about 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, police acted on a pair of anonymous 911 tips. A battalion of cops quickly swarmed the school. The brigade included over a dozen squad cars, the SWAT team and K9 units. The Erie County Sheriff’s Air One helicopter and what appears to be an armored vehicle also turned up.

Ferguson is a mentor at the school, and has a legal pistol permit. Yet, he was one of the people pushing hard for the NY law that bumped up possession on school grounds from a misdemeanor to a felony.

(Buffalo News) He was a well-known face in the movement for the SAFE Act, the state law that made carrying a gun on school property a felony.

Lots of his associates said it was an honest mistake. I agree with them. However, no matter what good work Mr Ferguson has done (he spends lots of time working against gangs and drugs, as well as mentoring), should he be immune from the law he helped pass? Should he be given a free pass? If he was a gun rights advocate the same people forgiving him would instead be pillorying him and demanding Hard Time, along with more gun restrictions.

“Mental lapses happen,” Giles said. “Things happen. It’s an unfortunate mistake. Dwayne was not conscious that he was in school with a gun.”

We should remember that next time a kid is suspended from school for have a water pistol or turns a pop tart into a gun.

UK Met Office “Suggests” Storms Are Caused By Climate Change

How cute. This is what Warmists call science nowadays

(BBC) Climate change is likely to be a factor in the extreme weather that has hit much of the UK in recent months, the Met Office’s chief scientist has said.

Dame Julia Slingo said the variable UK climate meant there was “no definitive answer” to what caused the storms.

“But all the evidence suggests there is a link to climate change,” she added.

“There is no evidence to counter the basic premise that a warmer world will lead to more intense daily and hourly rain events.”

Got that? In one breathe there is “no definitive answer”, in the next she blames climate change, which, of course, means she is Blaming Mankind. Despite the Met Office data showing a meager 0.28F increase in the global temperature since 1990, and a statistically insignificant 0.14F since 1997. And, their data shows no warming at all since 2000.

“We have records going back to 1766 and we have nothing like this,” she said. “We have seen some exceptional weather. We can’t say it is unprecedented but it is exceptional.”

Since there are no records, apparently, going back to what happened during the last warm period, there is no comparison available.

Can changes in climate cause weather, some of which can be damaging? Well, yeah. 4.5 billion years of history show that weather happens. That’s why everyone talks about the weather, and always has. Warmists, though, like to make pronouncements without proof. They just deem it into existence. Then they jump in their fossil fueled vehicles. This is the real anti-science.

Obama Put Illegal Aliens Over Legal Citizens

In Mr. Obama’s rush to try and give relief to the children of illegal aliens, many of whom were actually brought to the US illegally, he harmed legal citizens

(Daily Caller) President Barack Obama’s 2012 unilateral legalization of 500,000 young illegal immigrants helped him win the 2012 election — at the cost of splitting 500,000 innocent, law-abiding American families for months on end, according to a New York Times article.

The ruthless political calculation was buried deep in the low-key article, which was published on page 20 of the local “New York edition” of the national newspaper.

Obama directed officials to award work-permits to the illegal immigrants, preventing them from preparing green cards for Americans’ foreign-born spouses and children.

“Until recently, an American could obtain a green card for a [foreign] spouse, child or parent — probably the easiest document in the immigration system — in five months or less,” the article eventually reveals.

“But over the past year, waits for approvals of those resident visas stretched to 15 months, and more than 500,000 applications became stuck in the pipeline, playing havoc with international moves and children’s schools and keeping families apart,” said the article.

Interestingly, most of these people stuck in Obama’s immigration hell are productive members of society, people with jobs who have earnings. Obviously, we do not want them bringing their families (hey, their spouses might actually work, too!!!!), because they won’t be sucking up American taxpayer funded social services and totally reliant on The Government. And these are people who won’t play games with the law. This comes in the 2nd to last paragraph of the Times’ article

Some lawyers urged Mrs. Bachert to come as a tourist to join her husband. After deliberating for two sleepless weeks, she said, she decided she would rather bide her time apart than lie to American customs officials about her intentions to remain in the United States.

Sheesh, if she would Do It Wrong, Obama would probably hook her up.

“After Mr. Obama announced the deferral program, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, in 2012, he gave Citizenship and Immigration Services only two months to get it running,” the article said, without noting that the program had not been approved or funded by the nation’s elected Congress.

“Agency officials scrambled” to implement the president’s diktat, the newspaper said, adding that “soon after the deferrals were underway, Americans with green card applications felt the impact.”

Since this was a unilateral Obama Decree, there was no congressional approval nor authorized funding, and the agency had to prioritize the use of funding and resources. They chose to help illegal aliens rather than families of citizens. Hey, that’s what the top boss told them to do.

Jindal: Obamacare Is Not Compassionate

Governor Bobby Jindal puts Obamacare in context, and finds it vastly wanting in terms of economics and jobs

(Politico) The verdict is in, and it’s not good: Obamacare is rippling through the U.S. economy with vast implications for American prosperity.

On Friday, we learned that the Obama economy has hit stall speed, with a paltry 113,000 jobs added in January.

Two days earlier, we learned the president’s health care law is discouraging Americans from working, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The report makes for bracing reading. The law will reduce the labor supply by the equivalent of 2.3 million full-time workers, the CBO says — up from an estimated 800,000 just three years ago.

It gets worse. The CBO also concluded that the law’s “expanded Medicaid eligibility … will, on balance, reduce incentives to work.” Think about that: Obamacare is giving low-income Americans fewer reasons to work — to find and pursue the jobs that could transform their lives and the lives of those around them. The president talks a lot about tackling inequality. But his health care law is a recipe for increasing inequality, not decreasing it.

Let’s not forget that the same CBO report states that by 2024 there will still be 31 million uninsured. Wasn’t the entire idea, as proposed by Democrats, and Democrats only, that Obamacare will create a scenario where the 30 million folks without health insurance would be able to obtain it? How many Democrats told us that, both before and after passage? Nancy Pelosi said we have to pass it to find out what’s in it. Well, we’ve found that it doesn’t decrease the uninsured rate. Only 11% of Obamacare signups are people who were without insurance. And they’re destroying the jobs market at the same time as they fail in the main point of Obamacare.

Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion doesn’t just discourage work; it also prioritizes coverage for able-bodied adults over the needs of persons with disabilities. That’s a dirty little secret the Obama administration and its liberal allies, in their rush to expand government-funded health coverage to millions more Americans, won’t tell you. And it’s yet another reason why states should resist the siren song of the administration and its leftist supporters, who plan to spend 2014 persuading them to embrace the expansion.

Oh, come on, Bobby, how are people going to go out and become poets and basket weavers, following their dreams? The Medicaid expansion is actually one of the big points of Jindal’s piece, as it discourages able bodied Americans from working while expanding coverage to them while those with disabilities, who actually do need the help, are waiting and waiting and waiting

That’s not compassionate — just the opposite, in fact. So while the president’s advisers ask why states aren’t expanding Medicaid under Obamacare, I have another question for President Obama: Why is expanding Medicaid to cover millions of working-age Americans a bigger priority than giving access to hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities waiting for care?

Democrats want more people beholden to and under the control of the Federal Government. They aren’t compassionate: they’re drunk with power, and want a Big Government along Progressive (nice fascism) lines.

BTW, humorously, the White House webpage that discusses Obamacare is termed “Health Care that Works for Americans“. Despite it being a drag on the jobs market. It also still includes the line about keeping your insurance, the lie of the year.

New Yorker: Hey, If Only We Could Change The Way The Media Talks About Cold Weather

Obviously, this is yet another attempt to frame cold weather as being all a part of “climate change”. Because greenhouse gases cause cold in Warmist World (via Tom Nelson)

How Cold Weather Makes You Forget About Global Warming

(snip all the way to the end)

A slight change in presentation, however, may shift attitudes in the direction of climate science and away from the vicissitudes of local weather. A study out this month, from the Cardiff University psychologists Stuart Capstick and Nicholas Pidgeon, found that periods of exceptionally cold weather in the United Kingdom had the opposite effect as they did in the United States: more people believed in the truth of climate change. The reason for the difference? The media had framed the weather within the context of climate change, emphasizing that it was unnatural, rather than simply cold. Perhaps if people here were told that it’s not just brutal out there, it’s unnaturally brutal, they, too, might jump to a different conclusion.

Because cold weather never happened before or something. And cold weather can never be caused by cold, it can only be caused by hot.

NC Moral Monday Protest Organizers Tell Agitators To Bring Photo Id

Hardcore Leftist agitators have been doing this cute little protest thing called “Moral Mondays” for months, whining about the Republican agenda. Hey, they’re welcome to do it, as long as it is peaceable. Republicans haven’t stopped them or attempted to put any kibosh on the idiocy, even though the MM folks have consistently put themselves in a position to be arrested. Now, they’ve taken their gripes and whines to weekend, with a big protest featuring lots and lots of bused in folks, many from out of state. And something amusing happened

(Daily Caller) North Carolinians marching to protest voter-ID laws must present a valid photo ID to participate in an NAACP-hosted protest against voter-ID laws in Raleigh on Saturday.

The central claim among the protesters is that the  voter-ID laws disenfranchise certain segments of the voting population, particularly minority voters and poor voters.

According to official NAACP flyers passed out at the rally, protesters must carry the precise kind of ID that they would be expected to present at the voting booth.

Sister Toldjah tweeted this out

https://twitter.com/sistertoldjah/status/432162706784022528/photo/1

NC Republican Dave Lewis

“I find it extremely hypocritical that when nearly 70 percent of North Carolinians across all political spectrums support the idea that one present photo identification when going to the polls, the NC NAACP has filed suit in court to block this common-sense idea,” said Lewis in a statement to The Daily Caller.  “However, the NC NAACP requires their protesters to maintain valid photo identification on their person throughout the march. The idea that Chairman William Barber and his followers find it more important to carry their photo identification with them when marching than when electing the President of the United States is reprehensible.”

If it wasn’t for hypocrisy, Democrats wouldn’t have any morals.

Unsurprisingly, the Raleigh News and Observer fails to mention the blatant hypocrisy in their article. There are a few cute points, however

Susan Fariss of Mocksville drove three and a half hours to hold up a sign supporting the legalization of medical marijuana.

OoooooooK. Whatever floats your boat.

Holiday Clinkscale, 60, of Raleigh climbed atop a big potted plant on Fayetteville Street and twirled an American flag above his head. He wore a leather jacket decorated with red, white and blue stars and stripes. Clinkscale wore the regalia on behalf of “depressed” African-American men.

“Black men in Raleigh couldn’t wear red, white and blue after the Civil War when we were freed, or they would have been executed,” he said. “You see a lot of black men here today looking depressed.”

Interesting. No one stopped him from wearing red, white and blue. Which, during the Bush years, would have most likely have been upside down. And, considering we just came out of a period with a Dem governor, and the Democrats have controlled the General Assembly’s two houses for most of the last 100 years, why do you support Democrats if you’re depressed? And, remember, those policies about wearing the red, white, and blue were instituted by, that’s right, Democrats.

Hannah Osborne, a student at N.C. State University, said she came to the rally Saturday morning to “promote women’s rights and a woman’s right to choose.” She and her father, Dale Osborne, a pastor at Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, held purple signs that read “Stop the war on women.”

So a religious leader is pushing abortion? Perhaps he should read his Bible. It’s pretty explicit on the issue. If he doesn’t agree, perhaps he should quit.

Of course, the N&O editorial board terms the march as “mainstream, not fringe“. Yet, 75% of North Carolinians support voter ID. That’s the mainstream.

NY Times: The End Of Snow?

Remember when the UK Independent pushed their hyperventilating article Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past? (The website is down, you can see a screengrab here). Well, the NY Times tries their hand at this

The End Of Snow?

Officials canceled two Olympic test events last February in Sochi after several days of temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and a lack of snowfall had left ski trails bare and brown in spots. That situation led the climatologist Daniel Scott, a professor of global change and tourism at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, to analyze potential venues for future Winter Games. His thought was that with a rise in the average global temperature of more than 7 degrees Fahrenheit possible by 2100, there might not be that many snowy regions left in which to hold the Games. He concluded that of the 19 cities that have hosted the Winter Olympics, as few as 10 might be cold enough by midcentury to host them again. By 2100, that number shrinks to 6.

The planet has warmed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since the 1800s, and as a result, snow is melting. In the last 47 years, a million square miles of spring snow cover has disappeared from the Northern Hemisphere. Europe has lost half of its Alpine glacial ice since the 1850s, and if climate change is not reined in, two-thirds of European ski resorts will be likely to close by 2100.

The facts are straightforward: The planet is getting hotter. Snow melts above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The Alps are warming two to three times faster than the worldwide average, possibly because of global circulation patterns. Since 1970, the rate of winter warming per decade in the United States has been triple the rate of the previous 75 years, with the strongest trends in the Northern regions of the country. Nine of the 10 hottest years on record have occurred since 2000, and this winter is already looking to be one of the driest on record — with California at just 12 percent of its average snowpack in January, and the Pacific Northwest at around 50 percent.

1.4F in 170 years isn’t exactly scary stuff. And we’ve seen a 17 year pause. And a good chunk of the glaciers melted before 1940, well before CO2 hit 350ppm. But, hey, something might happen 86 years from now. When no one will remember the prognostications of crazy Warmists.

Unshockingly, no comments are allowed on the article. Warmists do not like to be challenged. Because people might mention things like 4 out of the past 5 winters being brutal in much of the world, particularly Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This year looks to shape up as average in those areas, while America and Canada have seen brutal snow. There was snow in many parts of the Middle East which almost never see it, such as Cairo. Over two-thirds of the US has snow cover.

Sunshine Hours puts February snow in perspective, and notes that snow is doing just fine in the Northern hemisphere.

Wait, wait, I forgot, snow is also caused by rising temperatures. My Bad!
