CBO Pretty Much Gives Up On Scoring Obamacare

You don’t say

(Roll Call) For Democratic lawmakers who were hesitant to sign onto the sweeping 2010 health care law, one of the most powerful selling points was that the Affordable Care Act would actually reduce the federal budget deficit, despite the additional costs of extending health insurance coverage to the uninsured.

Four years after enactment of what is widely viewed as President Barack Obama’s key legislative achievement, however, it’s unclear whether the health care law is still on track to reduce the deficit or whether it may actually end up adding to the federal debt. In fact, the answer to that question has become something of a mystery.

In its latest report on the law, the Congressional Budget Office said it is no longer possible to assess the overall fiscal impact of the law. That conclusion came as a surprise to some fiscal experts in Washington and is drawing concern. And without a clear picture of the law’s overall financing, it could make it politically easier to continue delaying pieces of it, including revenue raisers, because any resulting cost increases might be hidden.

Hidden costs? Shocking!

(The Hill) It means that measuring the healthcare law’s effect on the budget deficit will be much more difficult, if not impossible. The CBO is normally the best source of information on bills’ projected fiscal effects. (snip)

The law also includes a variety of taxes and fees to raise revenue, some of which the CBO suggested it could no longer analyze.

In other words, this is messing with the economy so much that the CBO can’t analyze it. Or won’t. Or been told not too.

To Solve Unemployment and Global Warming, Young People Hold the Key

See? Key.

Meet Alejandro Zapata, a young social entrepreneur from Colombia who nearly a decade ago founded a small enterprise in Medellin to design and implement innovative strategies for sustainable development. Since then, he has built a remarkable organization that collaborates with the private sector, governments, and NGOs to improve the environment–whether it’s working with companies to reduce water consumption in the manufacturing process or creating alliances with local ministries to spur “green” business growth. Due to its success, Portafolio Verde has grown its workforce to 40–the majority of whom are 20 to 35 years of age.

Alejandro, a member of the International Youth Foundation’s global network of YouthActionNet® fellows, is part of a worldwide movement of young leaders whose innovative thinking, passion for change, and entrepreneurial spark are helping to combat climate change and promote sustainable development. He is also a powerful example of how entrepreneurship itself–starting one’s own company and creating much needed jobs in the community–is helping to address the global unemployment crisis that keeps so many of today’s young people on the margins, unable to support themselves or build a future for their families.

Clearly, both climate change and youth unemployment, if not effectively dealt with now, pose grave threats to our collective futures. One recent report by a prominent military advisory board finds that global climate change is a growing threat to the national security of the United States, causing “global instability and conflict.” The study concludes: “The lack of comprehensive action by both the United States and the international community to address the full spectrum of projected climate change issues remains a concern.” Similarly, lack of progress in addressing high youth unemployment continues to roil regions like the Middle East and North Africa, where three years ago youth-led protests demanding greater economic opportunities toppled regimes and the status quo. The fact that 600 million young people today are out of school, out of work, and have no access to training should provide a renewed sense of urgency to move forward on these issues.

This isn’t just a Hotcoldwetdry issue: essentially, what we have here are youths creating jobs out of thin air that amount to nothing. They produce nothing of value. No products. No art. No science. No knowledge. Zip. Nada. Of course, this is what the snowflakes are learning in school, the power of narcissism, leading to so many degrees in (Insert stupid here) Studies. Worthless degrees that provide nothing but self-absorption. And here we have them linking the imaginary problem of anthropogenic global warming along with spreading awareness by creating meaningless spreading awareness groups. All linked to The Government.

Obama’s “Carbon” Plan: Killing Jobs, Costing Americans Money

I’m still not that concerned with Obama’s climate change plan: there is a low probability that it will actually be implemented. There will be too many lawsuits filed and fought. Republican led states, and perhaps energy states with Democrat leadership, will blow the regulations off. A GOP president starting in 2017 will roll the regs back to zero. And if the Democrats get blown out in 2014, much as happened in Australia in 2012 and 2013 to Labor, which was solely due to their climate change policies, Democrats will be squeamish as Obama’s final term winds down. That said, how bad would Obama’s plan be?

(CFACT) Supported by nothing but assumptions, faulty computer models and outright falsifications of what is actually happening on our planet, President Obama, his Environmental Protection Agency and their allies have issued more economy-crushing rules that they say will prevent dangerous manmade climate change.

Under the latest EPA regulatory onslaught (645 pages of new rules, released June 2), by 2030 states must slash carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired electricity generating plants by 30% below 2005 levels.

The new rules supposedly give states “flexibility” in deciding how to meet the mandates. However, many will have little choice but to impose costly cap-tax-and-trade regimes like the ones Congress has wisely and repeatedly refused to enact. Others will be forced to close perfectly good, highly reliable coal-fueled power plants that currently provide affordable electricity for millions of families, factories, hospitals, schools and businesses. The adverse impacts will be enormous.

The rules will further hobble a U.S. economy that actually shrank by 1% during the first quarter of 2014, following a pathetic 1.9% total annual growth in 2013. They are on top of $1.9 trillion per year (one-eighth of our total economy) that businesses and families already pay to comply with federal rules.

A U.S. Chamber of Commerce study calculates that the new regulations will cost our economy another $51 billion annually, result in 224,000 more lost jobs every year, and cost every American household $3,400 per year in higher prices for energy, food and other necessities. Poor, middle class and minority families – and those already dependent on unemployment and welfare – will be impacted worst. Those in a dozen states that depend on coal to generate 30-95% of their electricity will be hit especially hard.

Replacing coal with cleaner alternatives is a worthy goal. And not because of CO2, but actual pollutants. But, there has to be a viable energy source to replace it with, to avoid disruption and high costs. Obama’s plan doesn’t bother with that.

Millions of Americans will endure lower quality of life and be unable to heat or cool their homes properly, pay their rent or mortgage, or save for college and retirement. They will suffer from greater stress, worse sleep deprivation, higher incidences of depression and alcohol, drug, spousal and child abuse, and more heart attacks and strokes. As Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) points out, “A lot of people on the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum are going to die.” EPA ignores all of this.

Of course they do. And, of course, neither Obama nor EPA head Gina McCarthy are willing to reduce their own “carbon footprints”.

It also ignores the fact that, based to the agency’s own data, shutting down every coal-fired power plant in the USA would reduce the alleged increase in global temperatures by a mere 0.05 degrees F by 2100!

So, essentially, this would have zero effect on the climate, while destroying the economy, killing jobs, and killing citizens.

Contrary to model predictions and assertions by the White House, average global temperatures have not risen in almost 18 years. We have now gone over eight years without a category 3-5 hurricane hitting the United States – the longest such period in over a century. Tornadoes are at a multi-decade low. Droughts are no more frequent or intense than since 1900. There were fewer than half as many forest fires last year as during the 1960s and 1970s. Sea levels rose just eight inches over the last 130 years and are currently rising at barely seven inches per century. There’s still ice on Lake Superior – in June!

Of course, Warmists like Obama will tell us this will happen in the future, despite a 95% failure of climate models. And let’s jump into my Normal Meme: if Warmists were so darned concerned, they would start by taking measures within their own lives to reduce, and even eradicate, their own “carbon footprints”. Yet, they don’t. That should tell you all you need to know about their belief sets.

Team Obama “Surprised” By Bergdahl Reaction

One does have to wonder what was going through the heads of Obama and the people working for him regarding the prisoner swap that released 5 hardcore Islamists, high ranking members of the Taliban, in exchange for a soldier who deserted, and possibly gave aid and comfort to the enemy. Defense and CIA were overruled, and told to suck it up, in favor of politics. There were numerous investigations into what Bergdahl did. The people who served with him were less than enthused over the big deal made of his release. His release was met with crickets when announced to troops involved. Obama violated the law, a law he signed. Yet, somehow, they’re surprised

(The Hill) The White House has been caught off guard by the negative reaction to the deal that freed Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the last American prisoner of war in Afghanistan.

It has been particularly surprised by criticism of Bergdahl, who is accused of walking away from his unit shortly before being abducted by the Taliban.

The surprise helps explain why the administration has struggled to respond to the criticism, which appears to have caught officials flat-footed.

Political observers say the White House miscalculations were highlighted by the decision to have President Obama appear alongside Bergdahl’s parents in a Saturday night address at the Rose Garden address.

“They put too positive a spin on what is a very ambiguous set of circumstances,” Southern Methodist University professor Cal Jillson said.

“A big part of the WH stew on this is typical photo op hubris,” said Boston University political strategist Tobe Berkovitz. “Instead of just bringing Bergdahl back, they had to do the full kissy-huggy announcement with mom and dad figuring this good news would push the VA mess off the front page.”

Team Obama always seems to be surprised by the negative reactions to what they do. Perhaps they’ll say Obama read about it in the newspaper? More than likely, they did what they normally do, live in the moment, thinking this would be some great victory for Obama, without considering the reality of Bergdahl being a deserter, and possibly a traitor.

The administration believed any criticism of the deal would be overshadowed by a positive story: the freeing of a U.S. soldier after five years of captivity in Afghanistan, just as the war there is drawing to an end.

It expected some criticism over the release of the Guantanamo prisons, and it also expected lawmakers would be angered they weren’t informed of the deal in advance. But it didn’t see the criticism of Berghdahl himself coming.

In other words, they live in a fantasy bubble world, making decisions in the moment, failing to realize that the military, and the American People, are not fond of deserters, and possibly traitors. And now Team Obama is in spin mode, trying to defend the decision, and going on the attack. They surely figured that this would be happy time, and overshadow the VA scandal, leading into Obama’s super-awesome “carbon” scheme, allowing weeks of campaign messaging. Instead, now Team Obama has stepped into a big steaming pile, and his “carbon” scheme has virtually disappeared. And the VA scandal is still around.

Isn’t It Cool How California Is Flooded By Inland Seas?

That was the Pentagon prognostication. A decade ago

(Washington Times) Ten years ago, the Pentagon paid for a climate study that put forth many scary scenarios.

Consultants told the military that, by now, California would be flooded by inland seas, The Hague would be unlivable, polar ice would be mostly gone in summer, and global temperatures would rise at an accelerated rate as high as 0.5 degrees a year.

None of that has happened.

Surprise…..er, well, not really, for those of us who do not like in Warmist World.

Via The Lonely Conservative, who notes “Climate alarmists have been predicting doom and gloom for decades now. Politicians use those predictions as excuses to spend billions of dollars and enact policies that harm the economy.”

White House Accuses Soldiers Complaining About Bergdahl Of “Swift Boating”

Let’s be clear on one thing: this is Chuck Todd, appearing on The Today Show, reporting this, so take it with a grain of salt. But, having seen the way Team Obama has acted over the past 5+ years, would anyone be surprised if this was dead on? via The Weekly Standard’s Mark Hemingway

Every [White House] aide I’ve talked to said they expected there to be controversy involving the decision to release five members of the Taliban from Gitmo, and the fact that this would then escalate that debate, which has been simmering for a good five years, which is what to do with those detainees, how do you release them, where do you release them. They did not expect this backlash on Bergdahl himself. I’ve had a few aides describe it to me as we didn’t know that they were going to swift boat Bergdahl. And that’s a reference to that political fight back in 2004 over John Kerry’s military service, so there’s some fighting words there.

Here’s something to note: while those aids are attempting to portray this as something negative, as Kerry supporters did in 2004, the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth were 100% correct about John Kerry. Regardless, this would show a profound lack of care about our military.

Colonel Ralph Peters writes at National Review

The president, too, appears stunned. He has so little understanding of (or interest in) the values and traditions of our troops that he and his advisers really believed that those in uniform would erupt into public joy at the news of Bergdahl’s release — as D.C. frat kids did when Osama bin Laden’s death was trumpeted.

Both President Obama and Ms. Rice seem to think that the crime of desertion in wartime is kind of like skipping class. They have no idea of how great a sin desertion in the face of the enemy is to those in our military. The only worse sin is to side actively with the enemy and kill your brothers in arms. This is not sleeping in on Monday morning and ducking Gender Studies 101.

This shows further in the lack of caring by Obama regarding the VA scandal. Obama immediately met with Bergdahl’s father. What about the parents of those who have died thanks to the VA problems? Has he even visited a VA facility since the scandal broke?

Good News: Alameda County Passes Sales Tax Increase To Fund Illegal Alien Health Care

I actually think this idea is sensational: it means more illegals will stream into Alameda County, California. I think most California counties should pass the same measures, so that illegals tend to go there, rather than to the states that are trying to stop the flow of illegals

(Reuters) Voters in California’s Alameda County passed a measure on Tuesday that is expected to raise $100 million a year for health clinics for illegal immigrants, who are excluded from state programs and the federal Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

On May 23 a measure to include illegal immigrants in the state’s Medi-Cal program for the poor to residents who are undocumented stalled in the state senate, and immigration reform proposals have also stalled in U.S. Congress for the past year.

The measure extends a 0.5 percent sales tax to fund the clinics to 2034 from 2019.

“Our elected officials, our constituents, and our health authority see healthcare as a basic human right, to be provided regardless of immigration status,” Alex Briscoe, Director of the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency, said.

The sales tax in Alameda County, which includes Berkley and part of Oakland, is already 9% overall (a few incorporated cities have even higher tax rates). 7.5% is the state tax, 1.5% is Alameda’s tax. So, these liberal fools just voted to increase their county imposed tax by 33% to pay for illegals, who clog up their health systems, forcing citizens to wait longer and see emergency rooms and clinics close. Also, clog up their judicial system and jails. Commit crimes. Take positions at schools that could have gone to US citizens. Turn neighborhoods into slums. But, hey, this is what these fools want. I wonder when they will complain about not being able to afford stuff because of the taxes they pass? Because more illegals will head to Alameda County.

Meanwhile

(Fox News) President Obama on Monday described a surge in unaccompanied immigrant children caught trying to cross the Mexican border as an “urgent humanitarian situation,” as the White House asked Congress for an extra $1.4 billion in federal money to cope. Obama said the U.S. will temporarily house the children at two military bases.

In its new estimates, the government said as many as 60,000 children, mostly from Central America, could be caught this year trying to cross the Mexican border illegally, costing the U.S. more than $2.28 billion to house, feed and transport the children to shelters or reunite them with relatives already living in the United States. The new estimate is about $1.4 billion more than the government asked for in Obama’s budget request sent to Congress earlier this year.

This is what happens when the government coddles illegals instead of attempting to stop them. And lax policies will incent more illegals to come.
