Washington Post Decides To Make Potential Civil War In Venezuela All About Trump

I remember an article, long long ago, somewhere in 2006, where a liberal nutjob suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome was profiled. She would wake up early, because life under George W. Bush was just too much to deal with, then grab a non-alcoholic beer, chain-smoke, and wonder “what she should scream about this day”. Should it be about Bush, whom she considers “malevolent,” a “sociopath” and “the Antichrist”? She smokes another cigarette. Should it be about Vice President Cheney, whom she thinks of as “Satan,” or about Karl Rove, “the devil”? That was from the Washington Post, entitled The Left, Online and Outraged.

That’s what today’s opinion pages look like, the NEED to find something nutty and angry to write against Trump, especially when we get something like this from the Washington Post Editorial Board

The specter of civil war in Venezuela

MISERABLE AS the people of Venezuela may be under the increasingly repressive and irrational rule of the Nicolás Maduro regime, they had fresh reason for hope last week — until President Trump’s blundering words on Friday.

The Western Hemisphere’s democracies were rallying against Mr. Maduro’s latest power grab — a phony election to install a new, rubber-stamp legislature, accompanied by a crackdown on domestic opponents. In Lima, Peru, a 17-member bloc of countries, including Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia, had condemned Mr. Maduro’s government and imposed diplomatic isolation upon it. This effectively formed an ad hoc alternative to the Organization of American States, which had previously failed to respond to the situation appropriately because of Venezuela’s co-optation of client states and leftist allies. Meanwhile, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights had decried a “breakdown of the rule of law” and pinned responsibility on “the highest levels of the government.”

Then, with a stray remark, Mr. Trump set back much of this important diplomacy. Apparently oblivious to long-standing Latin American concerns about U.S. military intervention, he observed that his administration has “many options for Venezuela, including a possible military option, if necessary.” Perhaps his comment to reporters was intended as the usual “nothing is off the table” boilerplate; if so, it badly misfired. Mr. Trump’s bloviating immediately provided a shred of credibility to the Maduro regime’s conspiracy theories, which portray his domestic opponents as preparing the ground for Yankee intervention. Consequently, the new Peruvian-forged coalition had to waste precious time and political capital repudiating the American president, albeit not by name. “All foreign or domestic threats to resort to force undermine the goal of reinstating democratic governance in Venezuela, as well as the principles enshrined in the UN charter,” Peru’s foreign minister said.

If you’re guessing that the WPEB, which has almost never written about Venezuela, and were very approving of the previous wacko and authoritarian, Hugo Chavez, is now more Outraged by said boilerplate comment than about what the Venezuelan government is doing, you’d be correct. If you think they are magnifying the comment, conflating it to a threat to invade, you’d be correct. If you’re thinking that they wouldn’t criticize Obama in the same manner, you’d be correct.

Indeed, they do. To be sure, the damage Mr. Trump did is mostly intangible — but intangibles matter.

Fully stop. Nothing after that matters. This is simply the WPEB being part of the The Left, Online (and in bird cage liner) and Outraged, suffering from TDS. They even end the missive with the notion that Trump should not “enforce obedience on everyone else.” Interestingly, they did not have the same problem when Obama interfered in Lybia. Syria. When Russia invaded Crimea. Iran trying to build nukes. Etc.

Washington Post Decides To Write What Trump Should Have Said About Charlottesville

The Washington Post Editorial Board is in its normal snit fit mode, having decided to make the Charlottesville riot all about President Trump. Because #Resist. They’ve decided that what Trump said wasn’t presidential, so, they decided to create their own version of what a presidential president would say about the incident, because what Trump said just doesn’t fit in. I guess they’d prefer that he came off the golf course to make a speech, then head back for a few more holes. Which, BTW, I cannot find any condemnation of what Obama did regarding James Foley from the WPEB in the immediate few days.

What a presidential president would have said about Charlottesville

HERE IS what President Trump said Saturday about the violence in Charlottesville sparked by a demonstration of white nationalists, neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members:

We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. On many sides.

Here is what a presidential president would have said:

“The violence Friday and Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., is a tragedy and an unacceptable, impermissible assault on American values. It is an assault, specifically, on the ideals we cherish most in a pluralistic democracy — tolerance, peaceable coexistence and diversity.

Of course, it’s easy for the WPEB, who wrote this hours and hours after the event, rather than as it was happening. Of course, no matter what Trump said, La Resistance would find fault. Had Trump said the exact words the WPEB manufactured, they would have found fault.

What is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives. No citizen should ever fear for their safety and security in our society. And no child should ever be afraid to go outside and play or be with their parents and have a good time.

And we are here to provide whatever other assistance is needed. We are ready, willing and able. Above all else, we must remember this truth: No matter our color, creed, religion or political party, we are all Americans first. We love our country. We love our god.

We love our flag. We’re proud of our country. We’re proud of who we are, so we want to get the situation straightened out in Charlottesville, and we want to study it. And we want to see what we’re doing wrong as a country where things like this can happen. My administration is restoring the sacred bonds of loyalty between this nation and its citizens, but our citizens must also restore the bonds of trust and loyalty between one another. We must love each other, respect each other and cherish our history and our future together. So important. We have to respect each other. Ideally, we have to love each other.

Man, Trump just can’t get a …… oh, wait, that’s from his actual comments, made in the moment. In fact, the media, like the WPEB, are running with just tiny excerpts from Trump’s speech, which can put them out of context.

https://twitter.com/WilliamTeach/status/896360611562622976

They actually would. Now, here’s something interesting from the made up WPEB “speech”

“To wink at racism or to condone it through silence, or false moral equivalence, or elision, as some do, is no better and no more acceptable than racism itself. Just as we can justly identify radical Islamic terrorism when we see it, and call it out, so can we all see the racists in Charlottesville, and understand that they are anathema in our society, which depends so centrally on mutual respect.

Um, what? Folks like the WPEB tell us that they aren’t Islamic. They have conniption fits when people condemn Islamic terrorism as being Islamophobes. They do all they can to avoid mentioning that the terrorists are Muslims. They have meltdowns over wanting to slow the flow of Muslims coming from hotbeds of Islamic extremism to make sure they aren’t Islamic extremists. Has anyone seen any big stories or opinion pieces emanating from the WP about female genital mutilation in the United States, which occurs in Muslim communities? No? How about the honor killings?

And the WP has barely ever touched on denouncing the racist Black Lives Matter movement, nor the violence that has occurred in their marches, nor their racist and violent rhetoric. Nor do they condemn the violence and horrific rhetoric from the #Resist folks. They want it both ways.

Moving on

“We may all have pressing and legitimate questions about how the violence in Charlottesville unfolded — and whether it could have been prevented. There will be time in coming days to delve further into those matters, and demand answers. In the meantime, I stand ready to provide any and all resources from the federal government to ensure there will be no recurrence of such violence in Virginia or elsewhere. Let us keep the victims of this terrible tragedy in our thoughts and prayers, and keep faith that the values enshrined in our Constitution and laws will prevail against those who would desecrate our democracy.”

Um, Trump did rather say something similar. Of course, if you think about it, the folks who actually look to desecrate our democracy (yes, yes, it’s a Republic) and violate our Constitution are a large chunk of those who vote Democrat. We could surely go into all the why’s and how’s and what’s, however, most are aware, and there are too many instances to delve into.

Regardless, the left is freaking out, and would no matter what. The NY Times says Trump’s comments were insufficient

https://twitter.com/WilliamTeach/status/896547917183504384

If Trump said that flu shots are wonder and beautiful and everyone should get one, Democrats, led by the Washington Post and NY Times, would denounce getting flu shots.

Gore: Trump Is Driving, Not Weakening, The Hotcoldwetdry Movement Or Something

If you’re wondering “did Al Gore take a long fossil fueled trip to make this pronouncement?”, well, yes, he did. He was in London on Friday for the release of his new film, which has failed spectacularly. But, he has Things To Say

(Reuters) Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said on Friday that President Donald Trump’s rejection of the Paris climate change agreement was fueling, rather than weakening, momentum among environmental activists.

Gore, whose follow-up to his 2006 Oscar-winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” is showing in movie theaters worldwide this month, said governments and companies had stepped up since Trump’s decision in June to withdraw from the 2015 global pact.

“The entire world the next day re-doubled their commitments to the Paris agreement and in the U.S, the governors of our largest states and hundreds of mayors, thousands of business leaders all stood up to fill the gap and said ‘We are still in the Paris agreement,'” Gore told Reuters Television.

“I do think that the reaction to Donald Trump is actually driving much more momentum in the climate movement,” he added.

On one hand, Gore is correct, but, really, this is just part of the #Resist movement. If, come fall, Trump says that everyone should get a flu shot because they are great and American flu shots are the best, Democrats and Leftists around the world would refuse to get them, and probably call flu shots racist.

On the other, for all the caterwauling, most are still not doing anything other than making a lot of noise. But, hey, if cities and states want to do this, that’s their prerogative. But, the Democrats who approve of this and vote for this should stay in their own cities and states, and live under the misery they create.

Tacoma Looks To Spend $440,000 A Year To Protect Trespassing Immigrants

Sounds like a plan

(News Tribune) A task force created to focus on the needs of immigrants and refugees in Tacoma has recommended that the City Council spend $440,000 per year to establish a legal-defense fund for Tacoma residents detained at the Northwest Detention Center on the Tideflats.

The money would pay for two attorneys and two paralegals who would represent people facing deportation, said Amanda Diaz, a member of the task force and student body president at the University of Puget Sound. Another option would be to spend half that money for one lawyer and paralegal to provide some measure of legal representation to detained people, Diaz said.

The recommendation comes seven months after the task force was created and at a time of heightened awareness over federal immigration policy. Stepped-up deportation efforts that have come in the wake of President Donald Trump’s inauguration have created serious emotional and financial strain for many Tacoma families, she said.

Well, that’s interesting. Let’s dive back and remember this letter to the Los Angeles Times

To the editor: Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and County Supervisor Hilda Solis in December announced the creation of a $10-million legal aid fund to “hire lawyers to defend local immigrants without legal status.” (“A $10-million fund will help immigrants fight deportations. But should it help those with violent criminal convictions?” April 17)

My street hasn’t been swept for years. When I tried to find out why, I was told that my area is not “on the list” because there are no longer enough machines and people to drive them. Services that I continue to pay for have been stopped.

If there is enough money around to help illegal immigrants, surely there is enough to begin sweeping my dirty street again. Shouldn’t citizens come before illegal residents?

In the comments, one resident would like the city to fix the malfunctioning traffic control systems. And, let’s look at a smattering of headlines from the Tacoma area

This could surely go on and on, but, the point is made: citizens of Tacoma, just like most cities, have problems that should come before protecting people who are unlawfully present in the U.S., who are, at a minimum, trespassing.

North Korea’s Demands Are As Reasonable As Democrat Party Impeachment Demands

North Korean nutjob leader Kim Jong Un has a few demands, which sound about as sane as Democrats demanding impeachment, demanding Trump resign, thinking that they can use the 25th Amendment, and thinking that Hillary will end up president

(USA Today) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is rushing to develop nuclear missiles that can reach the United States, saying they are needed to deter an attack on his country.

If there are ever any talks with the Trump administration to defuse an increasingly dangerous crisis, here are five of Kim’s demands — though he shouldn’t count on getting them all met.

In fact, there has been back-channel diplomacy between the Trump administration and North Korea. Love him or loathe him, don’t make the mistake in thinking Trump is just winging it. Everyone figured Trump was doing just that during the election, because it sounded like that, like he wasn’t 100% scripted. This guy is a big time businessman, and you can bet he has a SMART action plan for everything.

Anyhow, here are the minor demands

  • Guarantees of no overthrow by U.S.
  • Keep nuclear weapons
  • Lift sanctions
  • Remove U.S. troops from South Korea
  • Negotiate formal end to Korean War

Is that all? Might as well ask for the moon. The only one that seems even close to possible would be a formal end to the Korean War, but, even there, the U.S. would surely demand the end of the nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons programs, along with standing down all the conventional forces along the DMZ area, capable of demolishing the capital city of Seoul, along with several other big population areas in South Korea.

Meanwhile, Democrats area also being totally reasonable, as they take the side of Kim Jong Un over that of the President of the United States. Remember, back in the Obama days, they called this treason.

Know What We Totally Need? More ‘Climate Change’ Stories!

And we need to replace science with those stories

More Climate Change Stories, Less Graphs And Maps

Be honest. If you are walking in the parking lot of the grocery store and you hear someone’s car alarm going off, what do you do? The answer is probably nothing at all (if you even noticed it). Something designed to alert the public now just fades into the background of our busy lives. I also notice a similar phenomenon with the use of the term “breaking news” on social media. On Thursday, the State of the Climate report was released. This report is an annual climate check-up led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and distributed by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Scientists from around the world contribute to the report. The report basically says the same thing that all recent reports say: Earth’s climate is warming, and that we are beginning to see impacts and trends across the globe. As the report rolled out, I saw excellent articles and information sharing with charts or graphics showing warming areas or trend lines of temperature, sea level, and so forth. However, a part of me wonders if such maps have become the “car alarms” of climate communication. I argue that we need more climate stories, less graphs and maps.

(blah blah blah)

All of these reasons suggest that data, while important, can be more effective if presented in ways that the public resonates with. I love the Tedx talk by Judith Black who lays out how to effectively use storytelling to move the needle on climate change. Harvard University recently debuted a photography project called, Collapse The Distance: A Climate Change Storytelling Project. My colleague Professor Katharine Hayhoe at Texas Tech University has long argued that effective climate change communication is not about data charts and name-calling but values. Her You Tube series Global Weirding weaves aspects of storytelling and connecting with values to convey complex climate information. Dr. Steve McNulty, the director of the Southeast Regional Climate Hub, also weaves these attributes into his E.L.F.L.A.N.D approach to communicating climate.

Yeah, that ought to do it……except, Warmists have been trotting out stories, art work, poems, demonstrations, painting things green, etc and so on, for decades. I’ve highlighted tons of these things over the years. What they haven’t done is provide rock solid proof that the current warm period is mostly/solely caused by Mankind. Their models are, at best, messes. Mostly, they’re failures. Their predictions likewise fail. They fix the data so that it supports their conclusions. This bears as much resemblance to science as Scientology does.
