Washington Post: “Veterans don’t get to decide what ‘respecting the flag’ means” Or Something

Salil Puri, a staff sergeant with the Army’s Psychological Operations Regiment, served in Afghanistan. He is a senior consultant with The Culper Group now. And the Washington Post has given him a platform to rail against our military veteran’s having a voice in the on-going kneeling debate. Sure, he’s entitled to his own opinion. It’s utterly unsurprising that the WP picked this for their leftist viewpoint

Veterans don’t get to decide what ‘respecting the flag’ means

….

But while most veterans have been measured in their responses, one strand of criticism is particularly disturbing: the notion that kneeling during the anthem is a specific affront to veterans and service members. As Kurt Schlichter, a combat veteran and contributor for Fox News, put it, Kaepernick “is targeting us. He knows what this means to us. He knows how insulting it is. He knows how disrespectful it is, and Nike is empowering it.” In a Facebook group for veterans that I belong to, someone wrote: “Anyone not respecting our flag should be deported. Many veterans and servicemen and women have died and suffered grievous wounds for this flag and anthem and constitution. Have some respect.” This argument isn’t new: Last year the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion chastised the protests as disrespectful.

This reasoning is rooted in a premise that is both wrong and dangerous. If kneeling for the anthem and the flag is a direct offense toward the military, that means veterans have a stronger claim to these symbols than Americans in general do. The argument insists that American iconography represents us more than it represents anyone else.

Yet the flag is not a symbol reserved for the military. It is a symbol of the United States of America, and it belongs equally to all citizens, including Americans who kneel during the anthem, or those who wear flag shirts (which is also in violation of the unenforceable flag code), or even those who burn the flag.

If we accept the idea that the military and veterans have authority over American symbols, we enforce a very narrow minority view of America and the American experience. Our cultural fabric is as rich as it is because the American myth has been interpreted, reinterpreted, criticized, praised and challenged by Americans of all backgrounds. If the military class were the arbiter of taste and ideology with regard to our iconography, we’d have a lot more of “13 Hours,” the bogus and hagiographical Benghazi movie, and a lot less of “Stripes” or “Catch-22.”

This line of thought continues on, with the core meaning being “veteran’s shouldn’t be listened to when they’ve been disrespected.” Puri even trots out the notion that this further divides the military from civilians and creates an “entitlement mentality” in the military.

We are not an elite class of citizen elevated above our neighbors. When we start thinking of ourselves as a warrior caste, removed from the people we defend, we exacerbate the civilian-military divide. We indulgein an entitlement mentality that isn’t healthy, demanding special treatment, such as discounts or restrictions on fireworks that might upset vets with post-traumatic stress disorder. The message is, You’re welcome for my service .

That’s interesting, because we’re supposed to listen to the tiny minority of U.S. citizens who are Offended that police officers arrest them.

We should be able to dislike something without seeing it as a personal affront. We should be able to oppose something without becoming frothy-mouthed and obsessed, as some veterans online have done over Nike’s ads. We should embrace Special Forces veteran Nate Boyer’s insistence that we show compassion for those we don’t agree with, while also acknowledging that everyone is free to boycott and destroy their Nike gear as they see fit.

Again, interesting, as the spokesperson for this wore socks portraying cops as pigs, loves him some dictator Fidel Castro, and gave money to a group that supports cop murderer Assata Shakur, who fled to Cuba. And, perhaps, Puri should be talking to liberals, who see everything as a personal affront. But, in his world, veterans aren’t allowed to have an opinion, nor get upset when NFL players and liberals disrespect them.

NY Times Is Very Concerned About Fossil Fueled Airports Flooding Or Something

One typhoon, a natural even that has happened before Mankind started using fossil fuels, is now proof of doom

From the Cult of Climastrology screed

As a powerful typhoon tore through Japan this week, travelers at Kansai International Airport looked out on a terrifying void: Where they should have seen the runway, they saw only the sea.

They also saw what could be a perilous future for low-lying airports around the world, increasingly vulnerable to the rising sea levels and more extreme storms brought about by climate change. A quarter of the world’s 100 busiest airports are less than 10 meters, or 32 feet, above sea level, according to an analysis of data from Airports Council Internationaland OpenFlights.

Twelve of those airports — including hubs in Shanghai, Rome, San Francisco and New York — are less than 5 meters above sea level. (snip)

The threat from rising waters comes as a reckoning for an industry that ranks among the major contributors to climate change. Air travel accounts for about 3 percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, but is one of the fastest-growing emissions sources. Given current trends, emissions from international air travel will triple by 2050, the International Civil Aviation Organization has predicted.

As the aviation industry grapples with its carbon footprint, it has also started to feel the effects of global warming. Extreme heat can ground planes because hotter, thinner air makes achieving lift difficult. A changing climate can also increase turbulence.

Low-lying areas along the water have long been seen as ideal sites for building new runways and terminals, because there are fewer obstacles for the planes during takeoff and landing, and less potential for noise complaints. But coasts also provide few natural protections against flooding or high winds.

All told, extreme weather and rising sea levels today pose one of the most urgent threats to many of the world’s busiest airports, which often weren’t designed with global warming in mind.

The sea rose a whopping eight inches during the 20th Century. It won’t be going up 32 feet any time soon. But, this is all based on a typhoon happening, something which always has happened. A slight increase in carbon dioxide has little to no effect on this.

The Kushimoto station shows 1.26ft per century, and it only goes back to 1960. Many of the stations are similar. Some, are much lower. Some are negative. It’s just nature in motion.

Twice Failed Presidential Candidate Wants To Stop Kavanaugh Over ‘Climate Change’

Alternate headline: “Woman who uses vast amounts of fossil fuels and hasn’t seemed to make any changes in her own life to reduce her carbon footprint yammers about something”

(Daily Caller) Former Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton wants supporters to tell their senators to vote against Judge Brett Kavanaugh becoming the newest justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Clinton’s main reason for opposing President Donald Trump’s second Supreme Court nominee? Man-made global warming.

“Replacing Kennedy with Kavanaugh would swing the Court to a new, hard-right majority that would rule against curbing greenhouse gases for years—maybe decades—that we can’t afford to waste on inaction,” Clinton wrote in a series of tweets published Friday.

Clinton’s criticism mirrors those of Democratic lawmakers and environmentalists who see Kavanaugh as a roadblock to policies aimed at fighting global warming. One prominent Democratic senator even said Kavanaugh “is the next Scott Pruitt,” referring to the former head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Clinton and others also worry Kavanaugh’s lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court could frustrate a future Democratic administration’s climate policy goals. The failed presidential candidate cited several examples of Kavanaugh ruling against climate regulations.

Here are a few of her tweets

What she really means is that it would be harder for Democrats to institute middle and lower class harming taxes and fees, along with more control of citizens by the Central Government. But, hey, consider that she did save some fossil fuels and reduced her carbon footprint a bit by failing to visit several states, like Wisconsin, that she needed in order to win the Presidency.

House Passes Bill To Make Deportation Of Criminal Illegal Aliens Easier And Quicker

Who would be surprised that the Democrats mostly objected?

(Washington Post) The House on Friday passed a bill that would restore the federal government’s ability to deport immigrants for a wide variety of violent criminal offenses in a vote that won quick praise from President Trump.

The Community Safety and Security Act aims to address an April Supreme Court ruling that found that the federal definition of a “crime of violence,” which under immigration law prompts the mandatory deportation of a noncitizen, is impermissibly vague. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Karen Handel (R-Ga.), specifically enumerates more than a dozen crimes that would qualify.

The bill passed 247-152, largely along party lines.

Democrats objected to the bill for being rushed to the floor without hearings or an amendment process in committee, though 29 broke ranks and supported it; four libertarian-oriented Republicans opposed it.

It’s a pretty simple bill, H.R. 6691. You can read and comprehend it in about 4 minutes.

Among the offenses that would be considered a “crime of violence” under the bill: “murder, voluntary manslaughter, assault, sexual abuse or aggravated sexual abuse, abusive sexual contact, child abuse, kidnapping, robbery, carjacking, firearms use, burglary, arson, extortion, communication of threats, coercion, fleeing, interference with flight crew members and attendants, domestic violence, hostage taking, stalking, human trafficking, piracy, or a terrorism offense” defined elsewhere in federal law.

So, what’s the problem?

The American Civil Liberties Union and several immigrant-rights groups opposed the bill, and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, warned its hasty consideration could create unforeseen consequences.

“The Judiciary Committee has had ample time to examine the decision, to hold hearings, to gather input from a range of stakeholders, and to carefully develop legislation through a markup and regular order,” he said Friday on the House floor. “But none of those things have happened. Instead, a bill with significant ramifications for criminal law and immigration cases was introduced just last week, while members were out of town, and is being rushed to the floor today without any adequate opportunity for review by the public, by legal experts, or by stakeholders.”

So, because they couldn’t spend 4 minutes reading the bill, they have a problem? A bill that defines what crimes of violence are, making it easier and faster to deport illegal aliens? It really doesn’t get any more simple for a Congressional bill than this. It’s almost like Democrats do not want to make it easier and quicker to deport illegal aliens that do things like sexually assault children.

Doom: Kavanaugh Had Emails On Sailing!

The Huff Post thinks they found the thing that’s going to sink Judge Brett Kavanaugh

Here’s Another Brett Kavanaugh Email Republicans Didn’t Want You To See

A major issue in Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings is Democratic anger over the limited release of documents related to his time working for President George W. Bush.

Democrats want all the documents from Kavanaugh’s six years in the White House, but Republicans are releasing only ones related to his time as associate counsel ― not the ones from when he was staff secretary. They’re also only getting ones that cleared review by a Bush lawyer, rather than waiting for a full review to be completed by the National Archives.

In response to the outcry, some previously confidential documents were made public Thursday, including a chain where Kavanaugh and his friends were planning a male-bonding trip on a boat from Sept. 7-9, 2001. (Read the emails here and here.)

In one email, an unnamed friend makes a racist joke about whether they’ll get a “rub-n-tug massage session”:

ZOMG! This is horrible! An email that was sent to him! Men being men!

After the trip, there’s lots of virtual high-fiving all around, including an email from Kavanaugh in which he talks about gambling, getting aggressive and keeping secrets. That email was dated Sept. 10, 2001.

This really is the best they have. Here’s how the article author tweeted it

Bummer: Everyday Is A Nightmare For Illegal Alien Family

We’re supposed to sob over this

‘Every day is a nightmare’: Wife of deported father calls for immigration changes

When Cindy Garcia and her two children arrive at their Michigan home, everyone becomes silent.

“Until my husband comes back to us, every day is a nightmare,” she said.

It’s been happening since Jan. 15, the day her husband was deported. Jorge Garcia was living in the U.S. for nearly 30 years.

They’ve tried to obtain his citizenship since 2005.

Advocates say the system needs changed, citing immigration policy problems and differences with immigration courts across the country.

In April, Cindy Garcia’s family took a two-and-a-half week trip to visit her husband. The family says Jorge Garcia has no criminal record, and they’re still working to bring him back to the U.S.

“Every day we relive him leaving. Every day it affects me,” she said. “I have to be grounded. I have to ask for God’s help, I said, because it is very hard to try to not show any type of emotion toward my children because I want them to be strong.”

When people remind Cindy Garcia that the deportation is over, she tells them the nightmare doesn’t disappear. She, her son, Jorge, and her daughter, Soleil, appreciate the chance to visit others, from family to friends, to keep their minds occupied. But when they get back to their home, it’s a constant reminder there’s one less person there.

Sorry, but he was here illegally. This is on him. And the family could move to be with him. There’s no mention of her legal status.

“We’re trying and we’re pushing to get it all out there so people don’t forget about us,” she said. “Don’t forget about the children being left behind — because they’re the ones being affected.”

That’s on Jorge, who knowingly broke U.S. law.

But Garcia said she still hopes the U.S. will improve its pathway for people to become citizens and reunite children with missing parents.

What’s to improve? You apply for citizenship and go through the legal, established process. Not come to the U.S. illegally/overstay your visa then demand you be given citizenship.
