A random act of journalism from the Associated Press, as reprinted at WRAL
Prices rise as the minimum wage increases in several states
At Granny Shaffer’s restaurant in Joplin, Missouri, owner Mike Wiggins is reprinting the menus to reflect the 5, 10 or 20 cents added to each item.
A two-egg breakfast will cost an extra dime, at $7.39. The price of a three-piece fried chicken dinner will go up 20 cents, to $8.78. The reason: Missouri’s minimum wage is rising.
Wiggins said the price hikes are necessary to help offset an estimated $10,000 to $12,000 in additional annual pay to his staff as a result of a new minimum wage law taking effect Tuesday.
“For us it’s very simple. There’s no big pot of money out there to get the money out of” for the required pay raises, Wiggins said.
Some will say “meh, it’s only 5, 10, 20 cents.” But, that will happen everywhere everyday. As the article points out, there are many states and cities which are raising the minimum wage, and many by a lot. Even double the federal minimum wage.
At Granny Shafffer’s in Joplin, waitress Shawna Green will see her base pay go up. But she has mixed emotions about it.
“We’ll have regulars, and they will notice, and they will bring it to our attention, like it’s our fault and our doings” that menu prices are increasing, she said. “They’ll back off on something, and it’s usually their tips, or they don’t come as often.”
Economic studies on minimum wage increases have shown that some workers do benefit, while others might see their work hours reduced. Businesses may place a higher value on experienced workers, making it more challenging for entry-level employees to find jobs.
There are many studies on this, and most do not paint a rosy picture for the workers. At best, for one from Seattle, some workers saw $10 more a week in their paycheck. Of course, that increase will just go to pay for the higher cost of living. Further, many who employ low wage workers will simply replace them with self-serv kiosks. A McDonald’s close to me, one which gets a lot of traffic being on a major Raleigh road (Capital Blvd) near a mall and near Raleigh’s outer beltline (540) just remodeled and put in 4 self serv kiosks. It’s not all about the push for a higher minimum wage, to be sure, but, you can bet it is a big part.
Just like with all the climate scientists, who receive a lot of government funding so they so often seem to take a very specific position, eh?
COMMENTARY: Want citizens to care about climate change? Write them a cheque
….
Political leaders need to care about climate enough to take on polluting entities like fossil fuel companies that supply or generate the vast majority of energy, provide millions of jobs and make political contributions.
Huh. So, Warmists want to obliterate what provides most of our energy? They’d be the first to complain when they can’t turn on MSNBC because of rolling blackouts.
We argue that the apathy of political leaders reflects the apathy of their citizens. Many politicians, and the people they represent around the world, simply do not view climate change as a crisis. Even when mainstream cable channels are covering it (a rarity in itself), people seem to care more about the next sports showdown or celebrity gossip for entertainment in their daily lives.
People might care in theory, but, they do not care in action.
So how do we get citizens to care about climate?
Any energy transition will need to be preceded by a transition of vocal and influential citizens, or swing voters, away from an anti-climate position. We don’t necessarily need all citizens of diverse socioeconomic and educational backgrounds to understand climate science or proactively support it (though that would be highly desirable), we just need a politically influential section of citizens to not oppose bold climate action.
After 30 years of failure to make this happen, they essentially want to jam it thru. Here we go
If carbon pricing is going to be a significant vehicle for climate action, then the key to securing broader support is through people’s wallets.
We should take advantage of human nature. People care about personal gains like well-paying jobs and pay raises. And they instinctively oppose taxes. But would they oppose a tax if they directly profit from it?
The ideal approach would be to distribute a large portion of the carbon tax revenues back to the working class families to compensate for the higher costs of energy products and services.
This would address real concerns that carbon pricing can disproportionately affect the economically marginalized (as seen in France). But it also dangles a real incentive for citizens to actually demand a carbon tax.
See? It’s so easy! When you’re cost of living goes up up up the government will give you a bit of money to cover some of the increase, say, four fifths, according to some of these schemes offered by the Cult of Climastrology. So, you’d get a check for $40 for every $50 you cost of living goes up. Obviously, in reality, you’d never get that much back from Government. Further, the Warmists are relying on people staying stupid, not realizing that it is government which jacked up their cost of living. Are we supposed to be happy that we get a pittance back?
If the supermarket raised the price of milk by $5 a gallon but said they’d give you a voucher for $4, would you be happy to get that check? Or would you think this was a scam?
Further, what happens here is that it makes citizens way more reliant on government, which would now be supporting their lives, and what can be given can be taken away. Funny how this gives government more power over your life, eh?

You have to know that something like this sends the Democrats and their pet media into full blown apoplexy
(Breitbart) President Donald Trump pointed to a 10-foot security wall around the Obama’s “mansion/compound†as he called for a wall along the U.S. border Sunday.
“President and Mrs. Obama built/has a ten foot Wall around their D.C. mansion/compound,†Trump wrote. “I agree, totally necessary for their safety and security. The U.S. needs the same thing, slightly larger version!â€
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1079497288605683712
Here’s what that looks like

Further, you can bet the doors are locked and that the Obama’s have armed security.
Are walls perfect? Of course not. But, they stop people way more often, as shown by the fact that people have used them for thousands and thousands of years.
Meanwhile, here’s a case of “me thinks thou doth protest too much”
‘Open borders’ claim just a right-wing myth | Feedback
In response to Luis Perez’s recent letter, “A wall works in Israel, why not here?” I say: Give it a rest. (the wall there does work)
The disingenuous argument from the right — if you don’t support President Donald Trump’s plans for a border wall, you want “open borders” — is nothing more than propaganda. We do not need a monument to Trump’s ego to protect our southern border. We have 21st century technology that would be far more effective in securing the border than a 14th century solution like a wall.
A wall will not solve our immigration problems. Almost half the people who are in this country illegally came here legally and overstayed their visas. The majority of drugs smuggled into this country come through legal ports of entry. How will a wall stop this? The short answer is: It won’t.
In fact, about 55% of the illegals have crossed the border, more often at the southern border. So we could seriously reduce that flow with walls in certain areas. And we should deport the hell out of the 45% who overstay their visas. But, liberals like William Roth, who wrote the letter above, just want to let anyone in.
The wall is just a simple solution from a simple mind. The problem is far more complex and requires comprehensive actions. There are some places on our border where a wall would be effective, and others where drone technology would be a better solution. Also, creating an easier path to citizenship for asylum seekers and migrants would reduce the count of undocumented persons in our country. Then, there is the idea of prosecuting those who hire undocumented workers.
Drones cannot stop anyone, unless we’re arming them. But, hey, if we just give cheap citizenship to all the illegals we wouldn’t have that many illegals! Problem solved!

It’s so serious that the vast majority of Warmists, including Jerry Brown, refuse to actually act like it’s as big a crisis as what the Axis powers attempted to do
Jerry Brown: Climate change challenges as serious as those faced in World War II
California Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown warned that America and the rest of the world are falling behind in the fight against climate change and likened the challenge to fighting the Nazis in World War II.
In an interview for Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” the outgoing governor called on President Donald Trump to take the lead in addressing the issue. “Instead of worrying about tariffs, I’d like to see the president and the Congress invest tens of billions in renewable energy, in more-efficient batteries, to get us off fossil fuel as quickly as we can,” Brown said.
“I would point to the fact that it took Roosevelt many, many years to get America willing to go into World War II and fight the Nazis. Well, we have an enemy, though different, but perhaps, very much devastating in a similar way. And we’ve got to fight climate change. And the president’s got to lead on that.”

Not one person on Meet The Press, not one so-called journalist, challenged him on this
But even Brown admitted that his efforts have been “not even close” to enough.
“Not close in California, and we’re doing more than anybody else. And not close in America or the rest of the world,” Brown said.
“We’ve got to get those zero-emission cars on the road. We have to figure out new ways of making cement. We’ve got to clean up our ships, which are creating more pollution than California and Texas put together. The technology, the investment, the lifestyle changes, the land-use changes, this is a revolutionary threat.”
So, even in uber-Warmist California they are unwilling to make the changes necessary for their beliefs, at least in their own lives. In fact, MTP spent the entire hour on ‘climate change’, and issue that people say they really care about, but aren’t willing to make changes in their own lives.

The thing about Donald Trump is that he does not do Political Speak. He lays it out there. You know what he is saying. His tweets, and speeches, are not poll tested in front of test group.
Any deaths of children or others at the Border are strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally. They can’t. If we had a Wall, they wouldn’t even try! The two…..
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 29, 2018
…children in question were very sick before they were given over to Border Patrol. The father of the young girl said it was not their fault, he hadn’t given her water in days. Border Patrol needs the Wall and it will all end. They are working so hard & getting so little credit!

And now the same who had zero outrage when Democrats were saying everyone was going to die from the end of Net Neutrality, the recent tax cuts, granny was going to be thrown from the cliff, etc and so on, is Outrage, utterly showing their partisanship. Here’s Karen Tumulty at the Washington Post
Trump’s tweets on children dying in U.S. custody are a new low
….
It is not news that the president is indifferent to human suffering. His limp response to the devastation of the 2017 hurricane in Puerto Rico — which he claimed to have been a “fantastic job†on the part of his administration — stands out in that regard. But on Saturday, we saw yet another level of depravity when Trump made his first comments regarding the deaths in recent days of two migrant Guatemalan children after they were apprehended by federal authorities. It revealed not only callousness but also opportunism, as he sought to turn this tragedy into a partisan advantage in his current standoff with Democrats over the government shutdown.
His statements came, not unexpectedly, over Twitter. First this: (she shows the two above tweets)
Not a word of sympathy here — much less remorse on the part of the government over the deaths of a 7-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy while in its custody. Nor does Trump address questions that are being raised about whether the administration’s new policy seeking to limit the ability of immigrants to seek asylum protection might be a factor in putting more at risk. Under recent changes, migrants must remain in Mexico as their asylum cases are processed, possibly increasing their willingness to do something reckless to come across the border.
I wonder if Karen will write an opinion piece on how the majority of elected California Democrats did not mention the murder of a California police officer at the hands of an illegal alien gang member with a history of arrests by California law enforcement, let go because of the state’s sanctuary policies? Is there any sympathy for the infant son of Corporal Singh, who will now never know his father?
Twitchy is highlighting many of the Liberal Media’s Outraged tweets in response, things we never saw when Democrats were saying we’re all doomed and going to die from GOP policies.
Anyhow, Trump is mostly correct. You can’t blame it all on Democrats, because people would come to the U.S. illegally no matter what for various reasons. There would be a hell of a lot fewer illegals if Democrat political stances didn’t invite them to come illegally, promising all sorts of things, as well as attempt to shield them all when they are here, including serious criminals. This includes murderers, arsonists, child rapists, and so forth. Democrats always have some excuse to protect illegal aliens, often to the disadvantage of American citizens.
We’ve seen the way Democrats have acted on illegal aliens, particularly this century, so, yes, they bear a huge amount of the blame. Most illegals wouldn’t come/overstay their visas if they knew they would be stopped/immediately deported. Seriously, look at Karen’s last paragraph above (as well as her later paragraphs at the link): she is against policy changes that will make it harder for illegals to come to the U.S.
In the meantime, we have a president who is willing to politicize the deaths of two young children to score points against the opposition party. And the most shocking thing about seeing him scrape along a new moral bottom is this: It is no longer shocking at all.
Perhaps Karen could discuss how tons of elected Democrats, and tons of liberal journalists, have politicized the deaths of the two migrants to assail Trump and Republicans.

Unless you live in Florida, and many still then, you are probably going “who?”
Karen Castor named to lead restored House panel on climate change
The House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi, has appointed the Florida representative Kathy Castor to lead a special committee on climate change that will be reinstated in the new Congress.
The climate panel is similar to one that Pelosi created when Democrats last controlled the House, from 2007 to 2011. It was eliminated when Republicans took the majority.
Pelosi, the likely House speaker, said Castor brings experience, energy and “urgency to the existential threat of the climate crisis†facing the US and the world. Castor is set to begin her seventh term representing the Tampa Bay area and serves on the energy and commerce committee.
“Congresswoman Castor is a proven champion for public health and green infrastructure, who deeply understands the scope and seriousness of this threat. Her decades of experience in this fight, both in Florida and in the Congress, will be vital,†Pelosi said.
I’ve focused on this issue on this blog for over a decade, and her name never comes up. Oh, and Pelosi made this announcement while in Hawaii, for which she took a long fossil fueled flight, and you can bet it wasn’t commercial.
Hilariously, the name for the committee is
Hilarious new name for the House global warming committee. https://t.co/KFwOozJO32
— Phil Kerpen (@kerpen) December 28, 2018
This is to deal with the existential threat or something. But, hey, this should make Progressives happy, right? Nope
Castor also refused to mandate that all committee members reject political contributions from fossil fuel companies, saying it would violate the First Amendment.
Progressives, including Ocasio-Cortez’s office, already are criticizing the new panel as an insufficient step forward.
“This committee, if it turns out that the rumors about it are true, sounds about as useful as a screen door on a submarine,†said Corbin Trent, a spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez. “As it’s portrayed it’s going to be completely incapable of solving the greatest threat to human kind.â€
He blamed Democratic leaders for not listening to the demands from incoming freshman focused on addressing climate change.
A lot of these far, far, far left nutters are upset.
