Nanny City Declares War On Salt

Let’s see. Liberals complain about calling the War on Terror the War on Terror because terror is just too esoteric an idea. But, I suppose having a War on Salt is A-OK

Singer Jimmy Buffett will never find his “lost shaker of salt” in New York City or any other place in the country if Mayor Michael Bloomberg has his way. The mayor is waging a war on salt and he wants food manufacturers and restaurants to join his army … or else.

It’s ironic that the war on salt began on the very day the city was spreading tons of it on the streets to fight a snow storm, but in Bloomberg’s view there is good salt … and bad salt.

City officials said that people don’t realize the salt content of the things they buy in the supermarket. For example, potato chips you would think are the saltiest thing in the store but they have only 180 milligrams per serving. Turkey meatballs, on the other hand, have 660 milligrams per serving. Marble cake has 300 per serving and chicken noodle soup has nearly 1,400 milligrams of salt per serving.

The city’s plan is to get food manufacturers in the United States to agree to gradually start reducing salt content until it reaches a 50 percent cut in 10 years.

Well, at least too much salt is known to be bad for people, and is real, rather then the idiocy of CO2 and climate change, er, excuse me, The Goracle is now calling it “climate crisis.”

This is just Mayor Bloomberg’s latest health initiative, following on the heels of a smoking ban, a ban on trans fats and forcing restaurants to post the calorie contents.

But many New Yorkers peppered the mayor with boos for his latest idea.

“Nanny state. We don’t need any more nanny state people can take care of themselves. We don’t need the government to take care of us,” said Patrick Keenan of Hell’s Kitchen.

Is it just me, or can anyone else see Bloomgerg’s decrees going nation?

First they banned trans-fats, then smoking, now salt. Didn’t we already try prohibition of alcohol once? Anyways, I wish Bloomberg would take the -R from next to his name, if he hasn’t already. This “nanny state” thing just irritates me to no end. But if New Yorkers want to continue to be treated like small children who need someone to take care of them and tell them how to live their lives, then whatever, but don’t try this crap down in Texas. Our governor tried to make a PPV vaccine mandatory for all girls in the state, and he about got his buttocks ripped into shreds, and he quickly backed off that crap…

As you have stated before, methane has an effect. Why do you rule out CO2 (which lasts longer in the atmosphere and constitutes a much larger percentage of it)?

I hope you don’t continue to ignore this question, Teach.

    1. Re: War on Terror/war on salt connection:

Did Bloomberg commit troops on the ground to this effort? No? Maybe it’s not the same, then.

It’s not that terrorism is “esoteric”. It’s that you wage war on physical entities, specifically, nations. Terrorism is a tactic/strategy.

    2. I find it HILARIOUS that you have the tenacity to claim there is “idiocy” in the theory of anthropogenic climate change, and yet you cannot answer the simplest questions about our climate.

Nice thing is, you can buy a throw away salt shaker and keep it with you. And when you use it, make sure a nanny-stater is present. That’s just to piss him/her off. should they become vocal and self-righteous, knock’em out and finish your meal in peace.

Of course being a believer in Darwin, evolution, and survival of the fittest (as opposed to the bible) I can see how this would be a self correction type of behavior. But obesity and health in general is looking worse each year for the poorest reddest states. http://calorielab.com/news/2008/07/02/fattest-states-2008/
One of my friends here works in the very small (3 person office) that was responsible for the removal of the transfats. Because of her i did my own experiment with a national brand of cookies called Grandma’s Cookies which at that time contained transfats. I opened a pack and left it for 2 months. Guess what !! after 2 months it was still soft and chewy !! not stale. It was a little scary. The nanny state also made us wear seat belts and took the lead out of gasoline and paint. Were these also objectionable to you ?

  6. Next up will be chocolate and caffeine, Duncan, because they are bad for you, and we just can’t be responsible for our own well being in Liberal world.

CO2 is a natural gas, Silke. Did you know that the fleas of the world put out more CO2 then all of Man’s cars? Perhaps you should google “CO2 800 years.” Did you know that temperature goes up prior to a rise in CO2?

Reasic, you do not even know the connection between weather and climate, so leave your tomfoolery at the door.

That’s a hell of a good idea, Glenn. Though, Bloomberg might have police on the lookout.

John, where does it stop? It’s that big slippery slope.

Teach said: CO2 is a natural gas, Silke.

So is methane, yet you claim that man’s contribution from methane actually has more of an effect than CO2. This is despite the fact that man emits less methane, there is less of it in the atmosphere and it does not stay as long as CO2.

Did you know that the fleas of the world put out more CO2 then all of Man’s cars?

While it is true that CO2 is emitted through natural biological and geological processes you omit a very important part of the carbon cycle – the absorption process known as the carbon sink (i.e. the ocean and the biosphere). Historically, the sink removed slightly more carbon dioxide from the air than was emitted naturally. However, man is now emitting CO2 faster than the planet can absorb it. We know this because we can measure the different isotopes of naturally occurring CO2 and man-made CO2 (C12 vs. C13).

Perhaps you should google “CO2 800 years.” Did you know that temperature goes up prior to a rise in CO2?

I did google it and I got several conflicting reports. No wonder you’re so confused.

Seriously, have you even thought through any this? You routinely get your facts wrong and your arguments contradict themselves.

  8. Reasic says:

Silke sufficiently covered the “fleas emit CO2” nonsense, so I’ll give a little more detail on the “lag”:

Perhaps you should google “CO2 800 years.” Did you know that temperature goes up prior to a rise in CO2?

Here’s what happened. Scientists examined ice cores, and found that there was a slight lag between the increase in CO2 concentrations and an increase in temperatures at the end of an ice age. Temps came first. Keep in mind, this is way before man produced carbon dioxide through industrial activity. So, the process that was found was that through changes in the earth’s orbit, tilt, and wobble (Milankovitch Cycles), the earth began to warm. As the earth warmed, carbon dioxide that was trapped in the cold oceans began to be released, which increased the atmospheric concentrations of the gas, further enhancing the warming effect.

Then, yahoos on the right latched onto this as “proof” that CO2 lags temperature, despite the obvious fact that co2 concentrations have drastically increased in recent decades without the previous temp increase 800 years ago. This is also not a gradual increase out of an ice age. We are already in an interglacial period. Also, man is currently pumping large quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

This “lag” is a non-issue in today’s situation. Don’t just find random “skeptical” arguments and post them. Investigate them and think about them first.
