With voters sour on the status quo, Republican John McCain plans to spend the next five months arguing that he has a history of fighting to reform government and that Democrat Barack Obama talks of change with nothing to show for it.
“I have a record of doing that, not a rhetoric of doing that,” McCain told an audience last week, claiming he long has taken a bipartisan approach to fixing the country’s ills while suggesting that Obama simply offers empty promises of working across party lines.
They point to his carefully honed image over decades as an independent thinker who has broken with the GOP’s right flank on issues that include the funding of embryonic stem cell research, an eventual path to citizenship for most illegal immigrants and the push to get money out of politics. They argue that his work with Democrats on those and other topics, like fighting climate change, as well as his seemingly one-man crusades against issues like wasteful government spending, shows he’s not a politics-as-usual candidate.
Not that I agree with many of those issues, but, you can’t say that the man doesn’t do what he thinks is correct! And he has passed legislation and fought for legislation. What has Mr. not even in the Senate for 4 years yet Obama done?
Those illegals had a chance for citizenship. They decided it was better to break our laws instead.
As someone who likes both of these candidates I think this is a valid point and one Obama will have to address in the general election.
You are correct, Kurt, and, unfortunately, too many politicians pander to them.
He is going to have to answer quite a bit, Silke, and when the debates start rolling around, he better be mega prepared, because McCain is going to walk all over him. I bet money that Obama’s strategy during the debates is going to attempt to make McCain mad, because Obama is just devoid of any experience, and has little if any actual viable ideas. Hope, change, change, hope.
Obama may be inexperienced but he was able to beat the biggest name in the Democratic Party for the nomination to the presidency. That’s no small accomplishment.
Whether Obama or McCain win in November I really do “hope†there is a “change†to politics as usual in this country.
