Australian Douglas Wood, taken hostage six weeks ago in Iraq, has been freed in a military operation, Australia’s prime minister says.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, speaking in a TV interview, said Wood was said to be in good physical shape but mentally exhausted.
"An Iraqi military unit managed to release him through military action," said Wood, who would not say exactly where the operation took place.
‘Course, I had to dig deep into CNN’s World page to find the story, cause the AP story, which is one of Yahoo News’ Top Stories, and picked up by most, including FoxNews, spends 2/3rds of the story yapping about a homicide bomber attack. The story doesn’t even give Iraqi troops any credit for helping to release Mr. Woods. Asshats.
Well, the news media out here carried the statement read by Howard, the Aussie Prime Minister, that credited the Iraqi forces (w/U.S. backup) that freed him. However, I watch a morning newsprogram that is a non-network station. Since Mr. Wood and his family currently live in Alamo, CA (just east of the San Francisco Bay)it was very big news here. Also KQED, the San Francisco Public Broadcasting station carried the story with all of the details.
