He fits in with people like Mitch McConnell, but, is he as wacky as ones like Susan Collins and Mitt Romney? Now he’s running for Senate, so, the media will portray him as a hardcore conservative
Larry Hogan Is Running for Senate as a Moderate. His Vetoes Tell a Different Story.
A governor uses his executive power to block efforts to expand abortion access, strengthen background checks on gun purchases, and require companies to offer paid family leave. That may sound like someone vying to be Donald Trump’s running mate, but it’s actually Larry Hogan, the former Maryland governor seen by many as the avatar of anti-Trump Republican moderation.
Hogan’s governorship is about to come under a microscope after he announced he was running for Senate, a surprise decision that came after months of speculation that he might make a third-party presidential bid. While Republicans had previously written off their chances of winning an open Senate seat in liberal Maryland, Hogan’s entry has changed the equation, given his reputation as the rare Republican even some Democrats like.
But during his eight years as governor, Hogan amassed a record of vetoing legislation that shows him to be more conservative than his national profile suggests. In April 2022, shortly before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Hogan vetoed a bill to increase the number of abortion providers throughout the state and allocate $3.5 million for a training program to perform the procedure safely. That same month, he rejected a measure that would require companies to offer 12 weeks of partially paid medical leave for their employees. In 2020, he blocked legislation to mandate background checks on private rifle and shotgun sales. And throughout his tenure, he vetoed bills to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, allow voters to fix mistakes on their mail-in ballots, and ban employers from asking job applicants about their criminal history.
Why should the taxpayers pay for abortions and abortion providers? That background checks bill did a lot more then appeared, and would essentially require registration of all guns in the state. Employers should ask applicants about criminal history. Really, Hogan seems more like a Michael Bloomberg type Republican: happy to use government for certain things, but, strong on economic matters. Or like a John McCain. He’s rather squishy on many things, and, really, just a Republican. Not quite a RINO, just a guy who let Trump Derangement Syndrome affect his Republican cognitive abilities.
But, what now? Is he a good choice? He’s said he won’t vote for a national abortion ban. This has incensed many Conservatives. But, it is the correct position. SCOTUS said in their opinion that abortion is left to the states, not the federal government. Los Federales shouldn’t be involved in voting to support or ban abortion.
He has stated he will support Trump if Trump is the GOP nominee. Is this a case of going where the wind’s blowing because he is running for senate? Was his TDS a case of needing the support of Democrats while governor of left leaning Maryland?
Will he be an ultra-squish Republican if he wins, throwing Republicans under the bus? Will he work towards strong border enforcement and be against amnesty? Is he willing to stop the government insanity on ‘climate change’?
“Everything he did that a Democrat wouldn’t have done is going to be pointed out and amplified,” says Michael Hanmer, a University of Maryland politics professor. “Maryland voters are pretty savvy. They’re not too far from Washington, D.C.” In a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans two-to-one, Hanmer adds, a right-wing veto history could be costly when the balance of power in Washington is at stake. “Those are vulnerabilities for him.”
However, he polled and still polls pretty darned well in Maryland. He’d probably be better off taking a slightly adversarial tone with Trump, letting Trump know he’s going to do this to get elected. And, at the end of the day, would you rather have a Republican in the Senate who might be a bit squishy, or a Democrat? What’s going to happen now is that the media will now turn on Hogan and pain him as an extremist, much like they did with John McCain, who was a media darling before he ran for president in 2008.

(NY Post) Climate activists targeted one of America’s founding documents Wednesday, dumping pink powder on the bulletproof case that protects the US Constitution.
The shocking incident took place at around 2:30 p.m. at the National Archives Rotunda in Washington, DC, which was forced to close to the public as a result of the mess.
“We are determined to foment a rebellion,” one of the activists, covered in the pinkish red dust, said shortly after the substance was poured on the 237-year old document, video taken of the aftermath shows.
“Joe Biden needs to declare a climate emergency,” he later said.
So the jerkoffs messed the day up for a whole bunch of people who had surely waited patiently to see our founding documents. There’s usually a line, as they only let in so many people at a time. And it will be closed Thursday for cleaning.
DC’s Metropolitan Police Department arrested both individuals and the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia will handle the case, a spokesperson for the National Archives and Record Administration told The Post.
“It will be treated as a federal crime,” they added, noting that the perpetrators indicated that the pink substance was powdered paint.
But, will they be charged and tried? That remains to be seen.

US to consider mass release of detained migrants over budget woes
A senior US immigration official has said that authorities plan to release thousands of migrants from detention amid a severe budget crunch.
The official from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told CBS, the BBC’s US partner, that between 4,000 and 6,000 migrants could be released.
A bipartisan border bill that would have funded immigration detentions collapsed last week.
More than 6.3 million migrants have entered the US illegally since 2021.
ICE is currently holding about 38,000 migrants in long-term detention facilities.
The bipartisan border bill that faltered due to Republican opposition last week would have earmarked $7.6bn (£6bn) for ICE, including an additional $3.2bn for detention capacity that would have boosted the agency’s ability to house detainees by several thousand beds.
Missing from this BBC News piece is the reality that none of this would be necessary if Biden wasn’t making it so damned easy for illegals to cross the border and just hang in the U.S. with the government, meaning the citizens, having to pay for them.
According to the Washington Post – which first reported the story – the bill’s collapse prompted ICE officials to circulate an internal proposal to slash costs by cutting detentions from 38,000 to 22,000.
While the proposal would see some of the migrants deported back to their home countries, many would be released into the US, the report added.
In other words, most will be released, not deported. Hopefully, they’ll be released in Texas so Greg Abbott can ship them to D.C.

House Intel Chair: Declassify ‘Serious National Security Threat’ Info
The chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives intelligence committee issued an unusual cryptic statement on Wednesday saying the committee had made available to all members of Congress information about an unspecified “serious national security threat” that sources said was related to Russia.
“I am requesting that President Biden declassify all information relating to this threat so that Congress, the Administration, and our allies can openly discuss the actions necessary to respond to this threat,” Representative Mike Turner said in the statement.
He provided no further information, and his office did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.
Two sources familiar with the issue said Turner’s statement was related to Russia and operations in space, without providing further details on what was described as a highly-classified matter.

Senators Mark Warner and Marco Rubio, the Democratic chairperson and Republican vice chairperson of the Senate Intelligence Committee, issued a joint statement saying their panel has the intelligence in question and has been “rigorously” tracking the issue.
“We continue to take this matter seriously and are discussing an appropriate response with the administration. In the meantime, we must be cautious about potentially disclosing sources and methods that may be key to preserving a range of options for U.S. action,” the statement said.

New York City could soon ban Tide PODS and other laundry-detergent packs under the latest “green” push from lawmakers.
The “Pods are Plastic Bill,” introduced by City Councilman James Gennaro last week, would make it illegal to sell any pods and laundry sheets if they’re made with polyvinyl alcohol.
Fines for selling the pods would start at $400, double for a second violation and top off at $1,200 for flouting the rules more than twice, if the bill becomes law. The bill would also require education and outreach to businesses on the ban for the first year.
The law wouldn’t take effect until Jan. 1, 2026, if passed.
Polyvinyl alcohol, or PVA, is used as a film in pods that dissolves in water during a wash cycle. But scientists counter that it breaks down into tiny microplastic pieces that still pollute waterways and slip through filtration systems.
On one hand, Democrats are always worrying about Other Things, rather than the big issues. It’s not like NYC isn’t being overrun with illegals, having crime issues, watching law enforcement officers quit and retire with few replacements, seeing their tax base leave, and others. So they look to pass something that is their typical Nanny State push. Nagging and overboard. Did Gennaro consider that people could simply order off the Internet and have them delivered easily?
On the other, microplastics are bad for the environment, bad for life, bad for humans. They are a serious issue. Of course, how much would this NYC law actually reduce?

Private sector should foot climate bill, French finance minister says
Funding to combat climate change needs to come from the private sector as there is no more public financing available from France or other European Union countries, French Finance Minister Bruno le Maire said on Tuesday.
“We cannot afford to have such a level of public debt. So don’t count on more public effort or public funding,” he told a conference of the International Energy Agency.
Le Maire said France was already investing some 40 billion euros ($42.85 billion) per year to fight climate change by deploying renewable energies and investing in new technologies and new nuclear plants.
“I can tell you that there is no possibility for us to put much more money on the table. And all the 27 (EU) member states are in exactly the same situation because we had to spend so much public money to limit the consequences of the COVID crisis,” he said.
In other words, they pissed away the money the government forcibly takes from citizens. Do they have anything to really show for it?
Private institutions and banks will need incentives to accelerate the green energy transition and funding needs to also come at the EU level, he said, calling for a Capital Market Union (CMU) to be set up.
The CMU will really be a way for government extract more money from private companies, who will simply pass the costs on the consumers. What’s that saying from Margaret Thatcher “the great thing about socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money”? Doing Something about ‘climate change is great till you realize you need more and more money to make it look like you’re doing something, while, really, you’re just hooking up donors and friends, as well as other politicians. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents fear there may be an alliance brewing between El Salvador’s MS-13 gang and Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua that would see New Yorkers terrorized by crime sprees, fueled by the porous southern border.
According to an FBI agent who spoke to the New York Post‘s Isabel Vincent, members of Tren de Aragua have exploited President Joe Biden’s policies at the United States-Mexico border that help release thousands of illegal aliens into American cities every day.
As a result, the Venezuelan street gang has massively grown its ranks across the sanctuary city of New York City, particularly in the Bronx. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Breitbart News reported last year, allowed top leaders of Tren de Aragua to live in a VIP-style prison and even escape in many cases.
Among those prison escape instances is Hector Guerrero, the leader of Tren de Aragua, whom law enforcement officials have warned may be now living in the U.S. after illegally crossing the southern border.
The FBI is worried that with Tren de Aragua’s growing membership in New York City’s five boroughs, the gang may ally with the MS-13 Gang of El Salvador to carry out violent attacks, robbery sprees, and other illegal activities.
What, exactly, did Biden and his illegal alien loving voters think was going to happen? That all the illegals coming would be the best of the best, educated, honest, hard working, good people? That’s not really how it works. Especially when it seems that a vast majority are neither women nor children, but, young men. Any of the crime is on Biden, who enabled all this.

Some polar bears face starvation as the Arctic sea ice melts because they are unable to adapt their diets to living on land, scientists have found.
The iconic Arctic species normally feed on ringed seals that they catch on ice floes offshore.
But as the ice disappears in a warming world, many bears are spending greater amounts of time on shore, eating bird’s eggs, berries and grass.
However the animals rapidly lose weight on land, increasing the risk of death.
I wonder how polar bears survived multiple Holocene warm periods, some of which were warmer than the current one?
The polar bear has become the poster child for the growing threat of climate change in the Arctic, but the reality of the impact on this species is complicated.
While the number of bears plummeted up to the 1980s this was mainly due to unsustainable hunting.
With greater legal protection, polar bear numbers have risen. But increasing global temperatures are now seen as their biggest threat.
