Oregon Sheriff Says Won’t Enforce Un-Constitutional Gun Laws

I hope Sheriff Tim Mueller understands how much vitriol is going to come his way from the tolerant and peaceful liberals

(Daily Caller) An Oregon sheriff has sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden saying his department will not enforce any new gun laws it considers unconstitutional.

Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller, in his letter dated Monday, said politicians are “attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims” by supporting laws that would harm law-abiding Americans. The sheriff said he took an oath to support the Constitution, and laws preventing citizens from owning certain semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines would violate their rights.

“We are Americans,” Mueller wrote. “We must not allow, nor shall we tolerate, the actions of criminals, no matter how heinous the crimes, to prompt politicians to enact laws that will infringe upon the liberties of responsible citizens who have broken no laws.”

He further goes on to write:

In summary, it is the position of this Sheriff that I refuse to participate, or stand idly by, while my citizens are turned into criminals due to the unconstitutional actions of misguided politicians.

It would be nice if more elected public officials would take a stand to uphold and protect the Constitution. Liberals won’t. The ACLU won’t. President Obama won’t. Democrats won’t. Some Republicans won’t.

Now it’s time to wait and see what (NMP) Obama will announce when he finally deigns to show up for his own press conference today. According to the Seattle Times (and many other outlets), what he will announce will be

According to a lobbyist briefed Tuesday, Obama will present a three-part plan focused on gun violence, education and mental health. He’ll call for:

– A focus on universal background checks. Right now some 40 percent of gun sales take place without background checks, including by private sellers at gun shows or over the Internet, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. (I think most of us can agree to this)

– A ban on assault weapons and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds or fewer. (it’ll never pass Congress, and will give Obama a way to demonize Republicans)

– A federal statute to stop “straw man” purchases of guns and crack down on trafficking rings. (Now that’s funny, considering agencies within the Obama were making straw purchases during Fast and Furious)

– More anti-bullying efforts; more training for teachers, counselors and principals; and funding for schools for more counselors and resource officers. (In other words, he wants to funnel more money towards teacher’s unions)

Obama also will order federal agencies to conduct more research on gun use and crimes, the lobbyist said, something Republican congressional majorities have limited through language in budget bills.

But will any of this stop violent criminals from obtaining guns and using them? You’ll weed out a few through background checks, but, that only applies to handguns, not rifles and shotguns. Instead of buying “scary looking” rifles, people could purchase the exact same thing in non-scary looking manner. You can easily purchase rifles in .223, same as the Ar-15, that do not have a pistol grip and aren’t painted black.

I’ll be interested to see if Obama proposes anything that goes after criminals during his stern lecture that will surely demonize legal gun owners, while armed men and women look on from the background.

(Washington Examiner) Carney said that the president will be joined by Vice President Joe Biden as well as children who wrote to the president after the Newtown shootings.

“They will be joined by children around the country expressing their concerns about gun violence and school safety, along with their parents,” Carney confirmed. (See video of Carney’s remarks here.)

Bummer: “Winter Doesn’t Seem To Exist Anymore”

That would certainly cut down on people freezing to death, frostbite, injuries and deadly accidents in the snow and ice, crops being ruined from cold, and would cut down on spending for seasonal wardrobes. Though I do love wearing a nice leather jacket (via Tom Nelson)

Bruck said mankind is a large contributor, if not the sole cause, for the excessive warming of the earth.

Someone needs to tell the people in China, Alaska, Russia, and Europe this, since they are dealing with serious cold temperatures right now. Oh, and as California is going through a massive cold snap.

Portman: Obama Misses The Point On Debt Ceiling

During yesterday’s Obama PC, he stated that he was a “pretty friendly guy“, which got a lot of laughs from the lapdog media, which had asked if he was “too insular”. Of course, that seems to apply only to partying, playing golf, and vacations, but, not to people in both his own Party and towards Republicans/Conservatives. He later went on to provide another laugh-riot soundbite

(Politico) “While I’m willing to compromise and find common ground over how to reduce our deficit, America cannot afford another debate with this Congress over how to pay the bills they’ve already racked up,” Obama said at the press conference. “To even entertain the idea of this happening, of America not paying its bills, is irresponsible. It’s absurd.”

Do you know what is absurd? The debt clock stands at $16,452,197,201,456 (I had to freeze the last 8 numbers at some point, because they just kept going up and up and up). As Glenn Reynolds points out, Obama owns the debt, which is up 60% since he first took office.

What’s also absurd is that Obama is willing to compromise. Every fiscal issue is a massive fight, since he takes a hard stand before even talking, is unwilling to listen to opposing voices, especially those who were also elected by American citizens, and then when a deal is finally hammered out, demands more in order to scuttle the thing.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said Tuesday that President Barack Obama “misses the whole point” with regard to the debt ceiling and government spending.

“Yes, we need to raise the debt limit at some point, but we have to do it in the context of getting the spending under control. The president says we need to pay our bills. He misses the whole point. The point is we need to adjust what bills we’re paying and how we’re paying them,” Portman said on Fox News.

“It is a compelling message saying we need to pay the bills that we’ve racked up. But it misses the whole point. Think about it in terms of a credit card,” said Portman, who served as budget director for former President George W. Bush. “If you have a son or daughter who exceeds the limits, what do you do? The first thing you do is probably rip up the card. The second thing you do is say, ‘We need to change our spending habits.’ This is what the president won’t do.”

Of course not. Because it’s not Obama’s money. He just wants what he wants, regardless of the consequences. I have to wonder if Obama has considered what kind of nation he’s leaving to his children? Does the thought cross his mind? And if thinks he’s making things better, then he’s a complete fool. This nation is broke. And he’s taking it down a road to ruin.

Is Obama missing the point? Or does he just not give a damn?

BTW, during the few minutes it took to write and cut and paste everything after the debt clock, it now stands above $16.452.201 trillion.

NY Set To Pass Gun Law Making NY Great Place For Criminals

The upshot of so many gun laws is that law abiding citizens see their gun freedoms restricted, while criminals are free to be even better criminals.

(USA Today) “We’re not looking to demonize gun owners,” Governor Cuomo (who hasn’t given up his own armed security) said. “Gun owners have done nothing wrong.”

Yet, the legislation demonizes gun owners

(NY Times, which refuses to give up their own armed guards) The expanded ban on assault weapons would broaden the definition of such weapons, banning semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature. New Yorkers who already own such guns could keep them but would be required to register them with the state.

What will they designate as “military style features”? Since the text of the legislation is not online, that’s hard to know. Does it shoot bullets? That sounds military style. Is it a scary black color? Military style.

The legislative package, which Mr. Cuomo said he believed would be “the most comprehensive package in the nation,” would ban any gun magazine that can hold over 7 rounds of ammunition — the current limit is 10 rounds. It would also require background checks of ammunition buyers and automated alerts to law enforcement of high-volume purchases.

Again, the devil is in the details. No story I have perused says whether this only applies to new sales or is retroactive. Most handguns come with magazines that are at least 8. My Walther P99 came with a 15 round mag, and P22 has a 10 round mag. Either gun makers will have to create magazines that only hold 7 rounds to fit in guns that have grips that are designed to hold more, or they will just not bother selling in New York state. Which I suspect is the point.

The legislation does increase punishment for those who shoot first responders, and would protect gun owners information from open records requests (see the USA Today article.)

It would also require background checks for ammunition purchases. Again, devil/details, in terms of does a buyer need one each time, or just a permit such as when purchasing a handgun?

Here’s where it gets even more interesting

In an acknowledgment that many people have suggested that part of the solution to gun violence is a better government response to mental illness, the legislation includes not only new restrictions on gun ownership, but also efforts to limit access to guns by the mentally ill.

The most significant new proposal would require mental health professionals to report to local mental health officials when they believe that patients are likely to harm themselves or others. Law enforcement would then be authorized to confiscate any firearm owned by a dangerous patient; therapists would not be sanctioned for a failure to report such patients if they acted “in good faith.”

“People who have mental health issues should not have guns,” Mr. Cuomo told reporters. “They could hurt themselves, they could hurt other people.”

The article then goes on to mention that this affects patient confidentiality, and could keep people with mental health issues from seeking treatment. The law would further expand the ability of judges to order people to receive outpatient treatment.

Now, over in the comments at Right Wing News and other places I’ve seen both right and left agree that we need to do something about the mentally ill. But, let me through this out there: have they broken laws to where their rights should be taken away?

This is a slippery slope. Obviously, some mentally ill are a serious danger to themselves and/or others. But, what about someone, from a right-side point of view, who rants on about 9/11 being an inside job and that every mention of the dangers from Islamists is “Islamophobia”? From a left-side POV, what about someone who rants on about the danger from The Government and becomes a survivalists living far, far away from everyone else? Are they mentally ill? Could they be deemed mentally ill?

Wherein lies the point where The State can deem someone ill enough to take away their Constitutional Right to be armed even though they have broken no laws nor been convicted of any laws?

GE: Hybrid And Electric Vehicles Make No Financial Sense

Yeah, the same company which did everything they could to avoid paying “their fair share” has lost that loving feeling for hybrids and electric vehicles (via Doug Ross)

(Gas2) While General Electric has a vested interest in see electric and plug-in hybrid cars storm the car market, GE has apparently had a change of heart. The electronics and aviation giant announced that it was no longer seeking to replace much of its fleet with 25,000 hybrid and electric vehicles. Instead, GE will pursue other alt-fuel options, including CNG and propane.

That isn’t to say GE is completely abandoning its plans to buy electrified vehicles; just a few months ago GE announced that it would be buying 2,000 Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrids to bolster its fleet. Add to that the thousands of Chevy Volts GE has already purchased, and it is fair to say that GE put its money where its mouth is.

Unfortunately, as GE soon found out, hybrids and electric vehicles don’t make financial sense for every job or situation. With many GE employees logging an average of 100 miles or more a day, the hybrids face diminishing returns when it comes to fuel savings, and a Chevy Volt is a poor replacement for a work truck or van.

The Volt is a poor replacement for a car, much less a truck or van. Strange, why wouldn’t they be thrilled with vehicles that cost in the $35k to $45k range when

The Volt’s range is 380 miles, including 38 miles in electric-only mode, while the C-Max averages 620 miles, with 21 miles in electric mode, according to the EPA.

So, if you want to go anywhere, you have to use evil fossil fuels.

How We’re Killing Our Kids (& Ourselves)… But Don’t Care If a mass shooting occurs at an elementary school, the whole country (and even much of the world) pays notice. And we focus on the news and what to do about it for days, or even weeks or months.

No complaint here at all! I think it’s an important matter that deserves our attention, and I do give it mine.

However, what’s absurd to me is that we’re committing mass murder on a daily basis and almost no one is paying any attention or working to solve the problem.

And what’s Zach freaking out about?

But seriously, without a livable climate, without the basics of human life, we die.

And so do our children.

And so do our grandchildren.

Unfortunately, that’s where we’re headed. Where’s the uproar? Where’s the nationwide or global focus on solutions? Each human life, one can easily argue, is priceless. But we’re treating them as worthless.

So, getting worked up about amass shooting is warranted, but it’s completely absurd that the world isn’t worked up about the many lives we sacrifice every day.

It’s completely absurd that Warmists refuse to live a carbon neutral lifestyle while continuing to push this stupidity.

In a meeting that was held on January 12, 2013 at Riverside Church in New York, on the occasion of the 85th birthday of Ramsey Clark, the former US Attorney General, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of establishment of International Action Center (IAC), Ramsey Clark and Sara Flounders, the co-founder of IAC, initiated signing a petition titled ’99ers on the negotiations of G5+1 with Iran’. The text of the petition which has been sponsored by a growing number of antiwar organizations including Solidarity with Iran – SI campaign and IAC is as follows.

As we approach the new round of negotiations between the G5+1 and Iran to discuss the so called ‘Iran’s nuclear issue’, we, the undersigned, declare our stand on this issue, as follows:

There are two sides in this dispute, one composed of the US and its allies in the European Union who accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons – without presenting even an iota of credible facts and supporting documents – and the other, Iran, which is striving to protect its right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes based on provisions of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Using an unfounded accusation as a pretext for acts of aggressions, one side of the dispute headed by the US empire is currently punishing the other side, Iran, with the genocidal sanctions, an inhuman act that has endangered the life of tens of millions of innocent Iranian citizens for their “crime” of deciding to live independent and free from the yoke of hegemonic powers. The excuse for these aggressions is an allegation that has strongly been denied by Iranian officials and international organizations such as the Non-aligned Movement (NAM) representing 120 countries. Furthermore, the charge against Iran on intending to develop nuclear weapons has even been refuted by the intelligent agencies of the US itself.

Should anyone be surprised that these “99er” take the side of Iran against the United States? Clarke et all provide even more venom aimed at the United States as the letter goes on, and ends with their demands

  • Lift immediately all sanctions and stop threats of war against Iran.
  • Fair deal with Iran, recognize the right of the Iranian people to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
  • Hands off Iran

The hardcore Islamists in charge of Iran must be thrilled to such useful idiots on their side.
