Bummer: Spring More Like Winter

Of course, we know that some climate astrologist will blame this on climate change, but for the moment

(Detroit News) “First day of spring?” said a WWJ-Detroit Radio forecasterWednesday morning in frigid, below-normal, 21-degree, Midwest temperatures with little relief in sight. “Feels more like the first day of January.”

What a difference a year makes.

Last March, the media welcomed spring in a panic over global warming, as local and national media sensationalized unseasonably warm temperatures. “”Meteorologists and other weather commentators have frequently commented they’ve never seen anything like this, exhausting superlatives,” hyperventilated Washington Post meteorologist Jason Samenow, citing the usual Horsemen of the Apocalypse, NASA’s James Hansen and activist Bill McKibben. “The background increases in greenhouse gases – at levels unprecedented in at least 800,000 years – are stacking the deck for more extreme heat events such as this and we have observed increases in average and extremely high temperatures.”

That was soooo 12 months ago. As usual, the global warming crowd was confusing weather and climate (not to mention hysteria and science). The science tells us the globe hasn’t warmed in 14 years, even as the planet trends warmer out of the Little Ice Age of the mid-19th century.

This doesn’t mean the Earth is heading into another cool period similar to the Little Ice Age or the Dark Age, nor even a glacial period. This simply means that the Earth’s climate is doing what the Earth’s climate does: namely, it’s own thing. That’s the explanation. Weather happens. Right now the Earth is in a long term (as in a couple of hundred years) warmer climate trend, but just like there will be really warm times during a cool period, there will be cool times during a warm trend. There’s little to nothing anthropogenic about it. Just nature doing nature things.

As Obamacare Turns Three Americans Still Not Lovin’ It

Gee, what’s not to love about legislation that remakes 1/6th of the US economy, insinuating the Government into all our health decisions, raising costs, creating yet another unfunded liability where a board of unelected bureaucrats will be able to make decisions that affect our quality of health care (IPBA), where companies will drop their generous insurance plans, etc and so on. Will Americans ever love Obamacare?

All through the Obama years, backers of the Affordable Care Act have lifted their spirits with a consistent refrain: Just you wait.

Someday, the law’s backers insisted, Obamacare will make the transition from a divisive idea to a widely popular one, from a program that many people still find confusing and scary to a familiar and comforting part of American life.

This weekend, which marks the third anniversary of the law’s passage, one thing remains clear: Someday has not yet arrived, and may not for a long time.

A two thousand plus page piece of legislation that few, if any, who voted for it read, which has resulted in over 30,000 pages of regulations (so far) which the majority of Americans were dead set against before passage, and still are.

(HuffPo) Overall, public opinion remains mixed and heavily influenced by political party affiliation, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation poll, conducted earlier this month, reveals. Forty percent of those surveyed said they have an unfavorable view of the reform law, 37 percent hold a favorable view and 23 percent had no opinion. Among Republicans, 68 percent said they had an unfavorable opinion of Obamacare, while 45 percent of independents said they had an unfavorable opinion. Among Democrats, 58 percent said they liked the law. These findings are roughly consistent with the foundation’s polling over the last three years, although the percentage with a favorable view has crept downward in recent months.

It’s worse than that

(Washington Examiner) Kaiser’s health tracking poll found that 37 percent of Democrats said “the cost of health care for the nation as a whole” would be better as a result of the law, just 39 percent said health care quality would be better and 27 percent said consumer protections for private insurance would be better. However, 53 percent of Democrats said the law would improve access to health care for the uninsured.

The numbers are worse for the population as a whole. When Republicans and independents are included, just 21 percent believe Obamacare will improve costs and 24 percent say it will improve quality.

Everything about Obamacare is designed to move the country towards Single Payer, rather than looking to reduce costs and increase quality of service. This goes hand in hand with what Democrats have been hell bent on doing for decades, namely getting as many people as possible into government dependency programs, creating people who should vote Democrat.

Congratulations, America: this is what you voted for in 2012. Of course, let’s not forget that the minute someone is nailed by the IRS for failing to obtain health insurance the lawsuits will be back on. That’s the main point from the Supreme Court decision.

Meanwhile, the Senate voted 79-20 to repeal the medical device tax last night. Alas, it was an amendment to a bill that did not pass. We’ll see if someone brings it up on its own.

Obama To Israeli’s: Put Yourself In Palestinian Shoes

So, this celebrity who got the part of POTUS decided to head over to Israel, and instead of talking to the Knesset, the elected official body of Israel, he took his neverending campaign to a school to talk to young folks. It was, as Allahpundit put it, “as florid a valentine to Israel and Zionism as a U.S. president has ever delivered.” Why? So he could build up to this (transcript from Weekly Standard)

Second, peace is just. There is no question that Israel has faced Palestinian factions who turned to terror, and leaders who missed historic opportunities. That is why security must be at the center of any agreement. And there is no question that the only path to peace is through negotiation. That is why, despite the criticism we’ve received, the United States will oppose unilateral efforts to bypass negotiations through the United Nations.

But the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and justice must also be recognized. Put yourself in their shoes – look at the world through their eyes. It is not fair that a Palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of her own, and lives with the presence of a foreign army that controls the movements of her parents every single day. It is not just when settler violence against Palestinians goes unpunished.  It is not right to prevent Palestinians from farming their lands; to restrict a student’s ability to move around the West Bank; or to displace Palestinian families from their home. Neither occupation nor expulsion is the answer. Just as Israelis built a state in their homeland, Palestinians have a right to be a free people in their own land.

So, Israel has constantly been attacked by Palestinian thugs and terrorists who care nothing for peace (except for the peace where Israel and her people are wiped out), but, hey, put yourselves in their shoes. This reminds me of Obama’s written missive just 8 days after September 11th, where he called for empathizing and understand the animals who attacked and killed 2,996 people that day along with those around the world who danced in the street as the Towers fell.

Perhaps he should tell Palestinians to put themselves in the shoes of the parents of Adele Biton, who was critically injured after Palestinians threw rocks at the car carrying her, her sisters, and mother, causing it to swerve and hit a truck. That’s what one Israeli lawmaker thinks

(The Blaze) Moshe Feiglin, a hawkish Likud lawmaker, said Obama’s speech contained “a lot of filth in the middle.”

Though he praised Obama for acknowledging the connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, he suggested Obama’s call for peace was naïve, saying this: “When Obama talked about forcing us to make peace, all I could think about was baby Adele, who was injured by stone-throwing near Ariel last week.”

Obama was most persuasive when discussing American-Israeli bonds, and least persuasive in his descriptions of the Arab Middle East. In his remarks today he pictured an Arab world, and a Palestinian political system, yearning for peace with Israel through negotiated compromises. This ignores the vast ocean of anti-Semitism in the Arab world, and the inculcation of hatred of Jews and Israel in generation after generation of Arabs—including Palestinians. And it ignores the rising tide of Islamism in the region, which threatens to engulf all those political figures who would really like a compromise peace. The Arab world Obama described is a place far more desirous of, and far closer to, peace with Israel than the one Israelis actually see around them.

Of course, Obama’s base thinks that Israel is the problem, and would like to see the nation gone.

Obama urged Israelis to push their own government toward peace: “Speaking as a politician, I can promise you this: political leaders will not take risks if the people do not demand that they do. You must create the change that you want to see.” This may be taken as a swipe at the new Israeli government or at Netanyahu, but even if it is not he is again addressing it to the wrong audience. Israelis cannot “create the change they want to see” in the hearts of Palestinians, Egyptians, and other Arabs. “Now is the time for the Arab World to take steps toward normalized relations with Israel,” Obama said. And he is right, but does anyone want to take bets on how likely that is? At his press conference in Ramallah, Obama said, “Secretary of State John Kerry intends to spend significant time, effort, and energy in trying to bring about a closing of the gap between the parties.” Note who is missing in that sentence: Obama himself, who is apparently not promising to “spend significant time, effort, and energy” on this—because he has quietly made a judgment about the chances that is far more realistic than his speech.

I have to disagree with Elliot: it’s surely not because Obama understands the situation, but because this is Obama’s pattern: he swoops in, makes a big speech, and believes that his job is done, that things will simply work out because of the speech. He himself rarely follows up with the work necessary to get the job done. This is why he pivots towards the US economy every so often.

Israelis would love peace: peace to not be attacked by Palestinians and other Islamists. Those who are attacked only want peace through the destruction of Israel.

Dems Against Terminating Federal Employees Who Owe Taxes

(Daily Caller) Citing figures indicating that more than 100,000 federal employees owe more than $1 billion in federal taxes, a House committee on Wednesday approved legislation that would require the firing of government workers who are “seriously tax delinquent.” (snip)

The Federal Employee Tax Accountability Act of 2013 requires the termination of employment for tax delinquent federal employees, while also prohibiting the hiring of new federal employees with a substantial amount of delinquent tax debt.

Well, it’s not like there is an agency responsible for dealing with collecting taxes.

Democrats on the committee opposed the bill. Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking member on the committee, said the legislation “seeks to demonize federal employees rather than ensure their compliance with tax obligations.”

Yeah, he went all whiny bitch. Of course, what the legislation is really meant to do is not go after some low level worker, who will certainly engage the interest of the IRS, but the people who work for Congress, the White House, and are highly paid and in important positions.

Rowan County Commissioners Tell ACLU To Go Fly A Kite

(Charlotte Observer) Rowan County commissioners, facing the prospect of a long and costly legal battle with the American Civil Liberties Union, held their ground Monday and opened their meeting with a prayer that included the words “personal Lord and Savior, Jesus.”

Later in the meeting, the board voted unanimously to hire legal defense for a battle against the ACLU.

Monday’s prayer opened a meeting that packed the chambers in the Rowan County Administration Building.

Yeah, as you can guess this is the standard ACLU mule fritters about “separation between church and state”, and you know what a pant load that argument is. No reason to rehash. Here’s what the NC Declaration of Rights has to say

All persons have a natural amd inalienable right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences, and no human authority shall, in any case whatever, control or interfere with the rights of conscience.

In other words, jackhole secularists who create their own Rights in their posteriors need to butt out of people’s religious real right to express those leanings, even if it involves government meetings. All the Rowan folks are doing is offering a prayer, which almost no one objects to. They aren’t instituting formal religious requirements for citizens.

Warmist: We Need A New Democracy Where Gov’t Tells You How To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Don’t trust your Stone Age brain: it’s unsustainable

Cognitive dissonance is that uncomfortable feeling we have when we know we should invest in solar panels but the 46″ wide screen TV wins out; we know we should catch the bus but we take the car anyway. It’s that sense of discord that arises when emotion and reason don’t get along. And unfortunately, it’s alive and well, sabotaging the climate change debate.

Yup, the stone age brains of Warmists who refuse to give up their own big carbon footprint lives. Heck, just look at this picture of Al Gore with 4 big computer models, tons of paper culled from trees, a leather chair, sitting in a nice climate controlled McMansion. Look at all the Warmists who take massive fossil fueled flights to the ends of the earth to exotic vacation spots to whine about CO2 from fossil fuels. Just ask any Warmist what type of vehicle they drive.

Unfortunately our emotional brain is encouraging us to pursue perceived self-interest even if that means trashing the planet. This leaves our rational brain to try to justify our actions, even while the walls come tumbling down and the temperatures keep rising.

True, Warmists do rationalize their own hypocritical behavior. But, there’s been a temperature rise pause for 17 years now, and a miniscule .28F rise in global temperatures since 1990. Not exactly doom worthy. Anyhow, here we go

We need to design a new kind of democracy where many government decisions are made cooperatively, with multi-party representation and the input of experts. Such think tanks must have strategies in place to promote critical self-analysis and to “frame” policy to reflect the long-term reality. The cost of climate change mitigation can then be shown to be minute compared to the cost of inaction.

Of course, this would mean only allowing certain people to have the Franchise, because in a Democracy people with different points of view are allowed to vote. The “experts” would be the ones with power, no one else would be allowed. By it’s very definition, democracy will never truly be about big decisions being made cooperatively, because of those different opinions. What she’s talking about is fascism, an authoritarian government, much like Saddam Hussein’s, Iran’s, or Hugo Chavez’s version of democracy.

Education must produce adults who can think critically and understand what’s at stake and why our judgement is flawed. To counter self-interest, the government should use incentives and disincentives to guide public behaviour. We need to encourage altruism by instituting reciprocal, incremental improvements, and by showing leadership.

By “think critically” she means brainwashed to listen to the “experts” and be good little drones, while empowering the government, run by these “experts”, to further reduce liberty to things that are only acceptable to these “experts”. Sounds very much like the regimes of Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot, eh?

Epic Pro-2nd Amendment Testimony In Connecticut

Just an ordinary, average citizen who realizes that yes, there is a Constitution, and yes, evil exists

(The Blaze) Meet Robert Steed, a resident of Vernon, Conn. who took three days straight off work to attend several gun control hearings in Connecticut. On March 14, Steed was more “aggravated” than usual with lawmakers and he let them know it in his fiery testimony, telling them that they were “coloring outside the lines of constitutional parameters.”

He went on: “I can’t for the life of me understand how this state can have as many gun laws on the books as it does and have members of its Legislature need to take firearms 101. And as far as what I felt were potshots taken at the NRA, they’ve done more for gun safety– they’ll do more for gun safety this weekend than this committee will do in your careers.”

Prior to Sandy Hook, Connecticut had some of the most draconian, restrictive gun laws in the nation.

“Adam Lanza commits a crime, and I’m here to gr0vel and plead for my rights and explain to you that my firearms are kept safely?” he asked rhetorically. “I keep hearing the word “solution”… you’re not going to find a solution, it doesn’t exist. You can’t find a broad brush solution to evil.”

An important point. People who want to kill will find a way. Who thought a bunch of Islamists would be able to hijack 4 planes with box cutters and do what they did? Lanza had his plan in the works for a long time. He had an intricate plan, including a 7 foot long score sheet based on the video games he played, to kill school children, because Sandy Hook was an easy target allowing the most carnage. Maybe draconian laws stop someone like Lanza from getting a gun legally. Unfortunately, he’s a criminal, and will get one elsewhere, or perhaps use a bomb. Fertilizer and diesel fuel are easy to obtain. After Tim McVeigh, were those products restricted?

In response to a Democrat saying that their jobs are difficult because the country is not a dictatorship, Steed stated

“The reason that your jobs are becoming so difficult is because you’re coloring outside the lines of constitutional parameters,” Steed shot back. “That’s the bottom line. You are trying to marriage up public safety with constitutional rights. The Constitution did not guarantee public safety, it guaranteed liberty. And sometimes what comes with liberty is tragedy, unfortunately.”

Democrats want to regulate away risk. Sugar, trans-fats, body spray, hugs, homemade cookies, lemonade stands, anything they catches their interest. Those are minor. You can’t do away with evil. Or even crime. But while they attempt to do that, they affect the law abiding citizen’s freedom, not the criminals.

“Two Reasons Why Hotcoldwetdry Is Not Like Other Environmental Problems”

One reason for the widespread misunderstanding is that climate change has been culturally coded as an “environmental problem.” This has been, in all sorts of ways, a disaster. Lots of pundits, especially brain-dead “centrist” pundits, have simply transferred their framing and conception of environmental problems to climate. They approach it as just another air pollution problem.

Hey, maybe he’s finally coming around. One of the things that has bothered me for a long time about ‘Climate Change’, beyond using that highly political term instead of anthropogenic global warming, is that the Warmists have folded every and any environmental issue under the banner of AGW, distracting from the real issue and shifting the focus, making it difficult to solve. It’s one of the reasons I moved from being a Warmist to a climate realist.

The first difference is that carbon dioxide is not like other pollutants.

He’s not saying it isn’t a pollutant, just that it’s different. CO2 is not a pollutant. Period. It’s a trace gas necessary for life.

The second difference is that climate change is irreversible.

True, because the climate will always change. Of course, we know that’s not what David means. In essence, he and other climate astrologers are saying that it is too late, so people have to be forced by Government to change their lives in manners that Warmists have so far refused for themselves in order to limit future temperature rise to less than 2 degrees Celsius.
