Remember the other day when a man was arrested on the University of Washington campus? What’s his deal
(Boston.com) A judge set bail at $2 million Friday for a Las Vegas man arrested near the University of Washington in a truck that authorities say contained multiple weapons, maps to three Seattle campuses and a recording in which he said he planned to do something in the West to support protesters demanding reform in Brazil.
King County Judge Arthur R. Chapman said he set such a high bail for Justin Jasper because he considered the 22-year-old a flight risk and a threat to the community.
The guns were stolen, not legally obtained, as was the truck. He had six Malatov cocktails, knives, machetes, and military grade body armor (stolen with guns and truck), to go with the guns.
More than 1 million demonstrators have taken to the streets in Brazil over the past month to denounce everything from poor public services to the billions of dollars spent preparing for next year’s World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
Police found evidence that Jasper was planning some kind of action in support of those protesters, Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Hamilton said. Hamilton said that on the podcast, Jasper said he was going to back the ‘‘Brazilian revolution’’ by doing something ‘‘somewhere in the Western United States.’’
The trucker said Jasper described himself as an ‘‘anarchist,’’ The Times reported.
Jasper had concerns about topics ranging from the chemical industry to genetically altered foods to voting rights, Henderson said.
This sounds exactly like the type of person who votes Democrat.

During a Republican presidential administration, this would be big news. Heck, it would have been big news from the get-go, with angry opinion pieces and editorials demanding massive Congressional inquiries. At least two American federal agents were killed by the 2,400 guns that were “walked.” At least 200 Mexican civilians, including children, have been killed by the guns. And more have been wounded. (LA Times) A high-powered rifle lost in the ATF’s Fast and Furious controversy was used to kill a Mexican police chief in the state of Jalisco earlier this year, according to internal Department of Justice records, suggesting that weapons from the failed gun-tracking operation have now made it into the hands of violent drug cartels deep inside Mexico.
Luis Lucio Rosales Astorga, the police chief in the city of Hostotipaquillo, was shot to death Jan. 29 when gunmen intercepted his patrol car and opened fire. Also killed was one of his bodyguards. His wife and a second bodyguard were wounded. (snip)
The WASR used in Jalisco was purchased on Feb. 22, 2010, about three months into the Fast and Furious operation, by 26-year-old Jacob A. Montelongo of Phoenix. He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy, making false statements and smuggling goods from the United States and was sentenced to 41 months in prison. (snip)
After the shooting in Jalisco, local officials said some of the suspects confessed to two other shootouts in the area, including one that left seven people dead, all part of the continuing feud by rival cartel members.
And how many bystanders were killed or wounded during the shootouts?
I will note that the LA Times says throughout the article, and the headline, that the weapons were “lost”. Well, yeah, if you consider intentionally refusing to track the weapons till they show up at a crime scene as “lost”. One person in the comments notes that this is Obama’s gift to the Mexican People that just keeps on giving.

Egypt Crisis Finds Washington Largely Ambivalent and Aloof
In polo shirt, shorts and sandals, President Obama headed to the golf course Friday morning with a couple of old friends, then flew to Camp David for a long weekend. Secretary of State John Kerry was relaxing at his vacation home in Nantucket.
It’s almost like that pesky POTUS business is inconvenient. Gotta get in 18 followed up by more vacation days. And then there’s Monsieur Kerry, if which the State Dept. initially denied that he was off yachting (a very 1%er thing) while Egypt burned, only to finally, reluctantly, admit, “yeah, he was“.
Aides said both men were updated as increasingly bloody clashes left dozens dead in Egypt, but from outward appearances they gave little sense that the Obama administration viewed the broader crisis in Cairo with great alarm. While the violence distressed American leaders, the unspoken truth is that many of them are at least conflicted and in some cases not all that unhappy about the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.
The relative calm in Washington also reflects a longer-term shift in American relations in the Middle East. While Egypt was once seen as the singular strategic player in the region, today other countries play a larger role. The overriding American interest in Egypt is preserving its three-decade peace with Israel, which officials believe the military is committed to doing.
The fact is that Obama and his team have completely bungled our foreign policy in regards to Egypt (along with many other nations) in pushing their “smart power” notion, and the United States has little to no influence in Egypt. But Team Obama has sure earned the ire of the Egyptian people, based on the messages the Egyptian people have for Obama and Ambassador Patterson.
For all the NY Times’ waffling regarding whether or not Obama embraced the Morsi government, the reality is that Team Obama worked hard to accommodate the increasingly dictatorial and Islamist government. Furthermore, Team Obama never seemed all that concerned with holding meetings with Islamists at the White House, including members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
The president met in the Situation Room on Thursday with his national security team, and the White House released a photograph showing the session. His cabinet secretaries and top national security aides called various officials in Egypt, Israel and elsewhere. But Mr. Obama’s decision to go golfing on Friday angered some Egyptians, and the only public comment from the administration as the crackdown in Cairo turned violent came from a State Department spokeswoman urging calm.
That’s weird, we’re still waiting for photos of What Obama Was Doing as our consulate and CIA annex were attacked on 9/11 in Benghazi and our people were murdered.
But, no one should really be surprised by Obama’s activities. Egypt didn’t capture his attention enough to do more than a brief photo-op and a quickie written statement, which said he was “deeply concerned” about, apparently, Egyptians ditching the increasingly dictatorial government (perhaps this was a bit of concern about Obama’s own rising dictatorial powers). Golf, sailing, and frivolity were more important, and as the Egyptians work towards a better future, they’ll increasingly ignore America.

(The Hockey Schtick) A new paper published in Nature Climate Change finds no evidence that the frequency of U.S.  ‘extreme weather events’ has changed over the last century. “Using hourly precipitation records from thirteen sites, this study finds no evidence for significant changes in mean ‘storminess’ across the United States” since 1900. The paper debunks claims by climate alarmists including Obama that ‘climate change’ is increasing storms or extreme weather.

Let’s just be clear: the Earth is in a warm period. I will argue with anyone who says otherwise. This is simply part of the pattern that has been going on since the end of the last glacial period, and particularly over the last 7K-8K years. Warm, cool, warm, cool. Some of these periods, lasting hundreds of years, are deeper than others. Right now, this warm period is mild, compared to the others. But, there is a need for papers like this one in order to rebut the unhinged insanity from Warmists, who now blame every weather event (including cold and snow) on man-induced climate change. Since there has not been any statistically significant warming in at least 15 years (and, really, is a 0.28F increase since 1990 significant? No.) Warmists have to find other ways to keep the cult going. Hence their current focus on weather events. Alas, too bad, not increasing.

On this Independence Day, it is worth reflecting on the willingness of our founding fathers to sacrifice their own comforts for the future–for many generations to come, including ours.
They didn’t argue about discount rates, or how expensive it would be, or if fighting the British would be cost effective in the long run. Imagine what would have happened if the “skeptics” had been given equal time, or if the patriots had lacked the will to “mitigate the threat”.
What follows that is the notion that people dare question things like “climate change”, which seems to be the bulk of it. Also, that Fox News dares to provide views which differ from those of the far left. This is the kind of drivel we get from Leftist wankers on Independence Day.
Because, at their heart of hearts, Progressives/Warmists are utter fascists who hate the notion of Free Speech when people are allowed to say things that the P/Ws disagree with.

Edward Snowden’s nightmare may be coming true.
Not exile; not the danger of imprisonment or prosecution; and not his newfound association with dictators, lawyers and impresarios.
Snowden’s worst fear, by his own account, was that “nothing will change.â€
“People will see in the media all these disclosures, they’ll know the lengths the government is going to grant themselves powers, unilaterally, to create greater control over American society and global society,†he told The Guardian last month after he’d asked it to identify him as its source. “But they won’t be willing to take the risks necessary to stand up and fight to change things, to force their representatives to actually take a stand in their interests.â€
Since Snowden’s revelations, what has happened? There was an initial furor, but this turned almost immediately to a focus from the media and elected politicians in demonizing Snowden. I’m not going to condone what he did, except in terms of that he did inform the American people just how badly the government was spying on them. Snowden is still a bad person. His leaks go well beyond being a whistleblower. But the focus became Snowden, not what he let us know about. His motives. Then his travels. What Russia and other countries would possibly do.
Then other stuff came along. Amnesty. Egypt. Etc. And we’ve moved, mostly, from the notion that the government spies on us. I suspect that this is partly due to the notion that we do not trust the federal government to be restrained. Consider all the things the TSA was doing to flyers. Lots and lots of outcry. Has anything really changed? No.

I don’t believe government officials when they say the National Security Agency’s (NSA) surveillance programs do not invade our privacy. The record suggests that you shouldn’t believe them, either. (snip to the end)
The biggest lie of all? That the American people don’t even deserve to be told what their laws mean, much less how those laws are being used.
While Eugene has a few partisan and silly moments (mentioning Rand Paul and tin foil hats in 2nd paragraph, in next to last he says government acts in good faith…I doubt he would say the same if Bush was in office, or there was a President McCain or Romney), it is a good op-ed, worth the read.
Why is NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg such a popular fellow? Because he perfectly encapsulates what Progressives stand for: bigger and bigger governmental control over Other People’s lives, from big things down to the tiny things. This is what Progressives want, but notice the use of the phrase “Other People’s lives”. When it comes to laws, regulations, burdens, penalties, taxes, anything restrictive, Progressives always want Other People, Someone Else, That Guy, to bear the burden, never themselves. Take Bloomberg’s big soda ban: Progressives thought it was a great idea to fight obesity, because obesity is bad for “climate change”. They just didn’t want the ban to effect themselves. Taxation? They like the idea of higher taxes on That Guy, on That Group, never on themselves. Air conditioning is Bad, but we should restrict Someone Else from having it, never themselves.

(Heartland) Mayor Michael Bloomberg—the man who brought about the failed supersize soda ban and restrictions on trans fats in city restaurants—is pushing for a law forcing New York City residents to compost their food refuse.
Bloomberg’s proposal would encourage voluntary composting initially, and then make food composting mandatory by 2015-2016.
Opponents decried yet another expansion of the nanny state and also worried about food composting expanding the city’s rat population.
“People seem to be able to recycle their paper and bottles without too much trouble, despite lots of outcry when it first started decades ago,†said Nicole Gelinas, a Searle Freedom Trust Fellow at the Manhattan Institute. “I think the point of the expanded voluntary pilot is to see if they can do this, too, or if it causes too many problems with improperly disposed waste—rats, etc.â€
That doesn’t matter, we have a planet to save. Or something. And turning building superintendent into composting cops is a small price to pay, along with the possible increase in rats. Oh, and
Stier notes the trucks that will be necessary to collect the food waste will put more vehicles on New York City streets, consume more oil and gas, and emit more pollutants into the city’s air.
“There’s no way food scraps can be picked up from every home throughout the city without greatly increasing the number of trucks, traffic, and tyranny,†Stier explained.
And all those extra trucks will put more evil “carbon pollution” into the atmosphere, causing the Earth to boil and islands to tip over. And, yes, composting is also a big concern for Warmists, who proclaim that by doing this lots of that evil “carbon pollution” could be removed from the atmosphere. And when you get down to the nuts and bolts of “climate change”, when you get to the heart of the matter, head into the engine room, you find that the “climate change” movement is all about Progressive (nice fascism) politics, not about any sort of science and/or environmentalism.
Of course, this is one of the great things about American democracy (don’t start with the “it’s a Republic” thing), based on the 1st Amendment: allowing other viewpoints. Which is interesting for the NY Times, because, at best, they rarely allow more than super-squishy Republicans to publish op-eds. Anyhow, here’s the Brookings Institute’s Shadi Hamid, director of their Doha center, based in Qatar, which is a rather Islamist country
WHEN Mohamed Morsi became Egypt’s first democratically elected president last year, it was an especially sweet victory for the Muslim Brotherhood, the region’s oldest and most influential Islamist movement. After a long history of repression, the Brotherhood had finally tasted triumph. But their short-lived rule ended Wednesday when Egypt’s army deposed Mr. Morsi.
They were repressed exactly because of their hardcore Islamist beliefs, wanting to institute Sharia law as the basis for government. How’s that type of government work out? See “Afghanistan” prior to the US invasion in 2001. Also see “Taliban”, which were surely more hardcore than the Muslim Brotherhood. See Iran, and the way the Clerics are involved in all politics.
The Brotherhood’s fall will have profound implications for the future of political Islam, reverberating across the region in potentially dangerous ways. One of the most important political developments of recent years was the decision of Islamist parties to make peace with democracy and commit to playing by the rules of the political game. Leaders counseled patience to their followers. Their time would come, they were told.
They made the decision to “play by the rules” in order to infiltrate governments and institute their hardcore brand of Islam. The Muslim Brotherhood has long been the political arm, the arm that isn’t heavily violent like al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and the other Islamic terrorist groups. Groups like the Muslim Brotherhood look to quietly and (mostly) peacefully transition governments over to Islamist ones. We see this same type of infiltration throughout the world, including Europe and America. In Egypt, though, they had a prime opportunity to take over the government and institute their agenda with ouster of Mubarak and the elections. They made the mistake of moving too fast in their agenda.
Now supporters of the Brotherhood will ask, with good reason, whether democracy still has anything to offer them. Mr. Morsi’s removal will breathe new life into the ideological claims of radicals. Al Qaeda and its followers have long argued that change can’t come through the democracy of “unbelieversâ€; violence is the only path. As the Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri once said, “What is truly regrettable is the rallying of thousands of duped Muslim youth in voter queues before ballot boxes instead of lining them up to fight in the cause of Allah.â€
The Brotherhood and its supporters were never about democracy, except as a tool to institute their hardcore ways. At the end, though, the Brotherhood is behind lots and lots of violence, repression of women, harsh criminal penalities (stonings and such). Yet Hamid is trying to tell us that the MB getting thrown out of office due to protesters, with the help of the military, who did not want the hardcore political setup, is a Bad Thing.
To limit the fallout from this week’s events, Egypt’s new government must ensure that the Brotherhood and its Freedom and Justice Party are reincorporated into the political process and free to contest — and win — parliamentary and presidential elections. Otherwise, Islamist parties’ faith in democracy could be irrevocably damaged.
There’s not much information out there regarding Hamid and what his leanings are, but I just have to wonder what his motivation is. The People of Egypt wanted Morsi and his MB hardcores gone: why would they be let back in? Would we accept the Nazi party being integrated into government? How about the KKK (well, unless you’re the Democrat party, and hold a KKK member as a paragon of virtue)? Would Hamid support a political party based on instituting the Christian or Jewish religions throughout government? In the comments, NY Times reader Kurt writes
Democracy is more than holding periodic elections. It also entails acceptance of limits on governmental and societal power to compel individual conscience. And, since such suppression is the very reason for being for Islamist parties such as Mr Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, Mr Hamid’s laments ring hollow.
Good point. One that many in our own government here should learn.
