Obamacare Desperation: Meeting With Celebs Who’ll Never Use It To Push It

And then Hollywood and other entertainment will be surprised when their shows tank because people come to be entertained, not bombarded with political propaganda

(CNN) President Barack Obama, hoping to pitch his signature health care law to younger Americans, will get some help from a cadre of Hollywood stars who have volunteered to help promote Obamacare’s insurance exchanges that open on October 1.

One has to wonder why he and others have to “pitch” it at all. Isn’t it “The Law”? The young folks, who mostly voted “Obama”, have no choice but to either enroll or pay a fine/tax.

At a meeting at the White House Monday, a group that included singer Jennifer Hudson and actors Kal Penn and Amy Poehler heard Obama extol the benefits his health care law offers young people, whose participation in the exchanges is seen as essential for their long-term viability.

“The President stopped by the meeting to engage artists who expressed an interest in helping to educate the public about the benefits of the health law,” a White House official said. “The reach of these national stars spreads beyond the beltway to fans of their television shows, movies, and music – and the power of these artists to speak through social media is especially critical.”

The meeting, which was led by Obama’s senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, also included representatives for Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, YouTube Comedy, Funny or Die and the organizations that put on the annual Grammy and Latin Grammy awards.

Does anyone think that any of these people will actually sign up in the Exchanges themselves? Or do they have their own Cadillac plans?

And when they start pushing O-care people will tune out. The movies and shows with specific liberal politics tend to bomb. No one wants to be patronized, especially by celebs who’ll never enroll in O-care and will do all they can to avoid that “Cadillac tax” on their own high end health insurance plans. If they push this in TV shows, movies, YouTube, you can bet people will avoid those forms of entertainment, particularly since over 50% of the nation is still dead set against Obamacare.

Same goes for the NFL and NBA, along with any other sports, if they decide to push O-care.

Pelosi: We Need To Uphold The Constitution By Enacting Gun Control

Not many people will argue that a few basic, common sense regulations regarding firearms is a Bad Idea. Surely we would like to keep them out of the hands of criminals, gang bangers, and others who would look to use them in a Bad Way. Surely we would like to keep people like, say, Eric Holder, from running them across the border into Mexico. Anyhow, here’s Nancy Pelosi, who happens to have armed security personnel protecting her, something she would prefer you not have, nor your own gun protecting yourself

(CNS News) Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D – Calif.) cited her oath to “protect and defend” the U.S. Constitution as the reason Congress should enact harsher gun control measures.

In a press release marking the one-year anniversary of the Aurora, Colorado shootings, the former Speaker of the House said: “In Congress, there can be no more fitting memorial to the lives lost in Aurora, in Newtown, and across the country than a concerted effort to enact commonsense gun safety legislation.

“We must uphold our oath to ‘protect and defend’ the constitution and all Americans by expanding background checks and keeping dangerous firearms out of the wrong hands.”

One problem is in defining “wrong hands”. The 2nd Amendment does not allow the government to restrict the right of a citizen to own a gun, but, again, I think we can agree that criminals shouldn’t have them, people with serious mental issues…which would leave most Democrats out of the mix…look, I just defined “wrong hands”. Think the Democrats won’t do the same with legislation, regulation, and other methods?

“We must restore confidence in the safety of our homes, schools, movie theaters, and neighborhoods by taking clear, concrete steps to prevent gun violence,” Pelosi added.

And apparently the best way to stop violence is to restrict law abiding citizens from owning and carrying guns. Because, as we all know, criminals follow the law and would never bring guns to schools, homes, and movie theaters.

I wonder if Barack knows that Nancy thinks she’s president?

The phrase “to protect and defend the Constitution” that Pelosi cited as the reason Congress must enact stricter gun control laws is not found in the oath that members of Congress take, but in the Presidential Oath of Office instead.

Aren’t you thrilled that Nancy doesn’t know her own Oath of office? Hers says “support and defend” the Constitution, but, like most legislation she votes for, she probably has not read it.

Cities Are Doomed From Hotcoldwetdry Somewhere Between 87 and 2,187 Years From Now

Glad they have a really good margin of error. Let’s start with the first paragraph (via Tom Nelson)

(Huff Post) A new article in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), is headlined “The Multimillennial Sea-Level Commitment of Global Warming,” and it reports that because of carbon emissions that are virtually certain, on the basis of the lack of policy-response to global warming thus far, sea levels are now set to rise anywhere from around 8 inches to 7 feet within 100 years, and around 5 yards to 10 yards within 2,000 years. The projections are clearer (within a narrower range) for the longer time-frame than for the shorter one. That’s because even if the short-term consequences of heat-rise turn out to be relatively slight, the longer-term consequences are clearer, and will be considerably larger, as delayed impacts kick in.

I already discussed this silliness and unscientific scaremongering prognostication previously, but I wanted to point out the “hey, we’re kinda unclear what will happen soon (because you might remember our predictions), but way on down the road? We nailed it!” idiocy

So, somewhere in time between, say, the years 2100 and 4200, such cities as Boston, NYC, etc., will be uninhabitable. They will be past history. It’s an interesting thought, perhaps – but just a curiosity that’s heavily discounted, so it’s not actually being given much thought. Perhaps it’s not given even as much thought as the beef that a person consumes, which had been a cow a few days before. After all, that beef has a taste, which is enjoyed now. The future is “just the future” — and it’s discounted at compounded annual rates.

If we go by the latter date, the Earth will have gone through multiple warm and cool periods, based on historical patterns. Anyhow, if this is what Warmists think is “clearer” in the long term, yikes!

Aaaand, Now Warmists/Enviroweenies Want To Ruin Alcohol Consumption

Questionable drunk texts aside, many of us believe that our occasional (or frequent, no judgment!) nightcap is basically harmless as long as we’re not doing something stupid or dangerous like operating a motor vehicle. Unfortunately, though, like pretty much everything else we do, what we imbibe has a direct and substantial impact on the environment. According to the June 2012 Research on the Carbon Footprint of Spirits report by the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER), a 750-milliliter bottle of liquor produces, on average, 6.30 pounds of CO2. That’s more than six giant exercise balls full of carbon dioxide for every bottle of whiskey, rum, vodka, gin, or tequila that you consume.

According to the BIER report (which specifically focused on the lifecycle of a North American whiskey but is meant to reflect a typical American spirit), distillation is the No. 1 contributor to a spirit’s carbon footprint, accounting for more than a third of its emissions. That’s largely because in addition to the energy required to power the process, distillation also creates a lot of waste in the form of spent mash, wastewater, and liquor-specific goop like tequila’s acidic pulp and rum’s fibrous leftovers, known as “mostos.” “The actual distillation itself,” says Dänny Ronen of DC Spirits, a food, wine, and spirits organization focused on efficiency and sustainability, “is a very, very wasteful, destructive process.”

So, what can you do? Drink sustainable and “carbon” friendly liquor!!!!!! Check the glass, the packaging, the labels, how it is made…

If you haven’t done your homework before you get to the store, do it once you’re there. “Most people have a smartphone on them,” Ehrmann astutely observes. “Pick up your phone and Google the company.”  But if doing homework at a liquor store sounds like a buzzkill (totally fair), then at least take the time to find a top-notch retailer, even if it means venturing farther than the one on your corner with the bulletproof glass. “The right store has the right people who actually know very, very well all the products they have in front of you,” Ronen says. So pre-party time, let the experts do the work.

Obama Plans Yet Another Campaign Style Pivot To The Economy

This reminds me of one of those bad movies they keep playing on TV. Or of Sharknado, which had enormous hype, and was even worse than the usual dreck on the SyFy channel

(NY Times) With major battles looming in the fall over the federal budget and the debt ceiling, President Obamais trying to regain the initiative, embarking on a campaign-style tour of the Midwest this week to lay out his agenda for reinvigorating the nation’s economy, administration officials said Sunday.

Mr. Obama’s offensive will begin on Wednesday in Galesburg, Ill., with what his aides are saying will be a major address on economic policy at Knox College. Officials declined to provide details of the president’s message, but said he would set his terms for what they expect will be another bruising battle with a Republican-controlled House over the nation’s fiscal policies.

White House officials liken Wednesday’s speech to one he gave in 2011 in Osawatomie, Kan., where he articulated the theme of economic inequality in American society that became a leitmotif of his re-election campaign, and to one at Georgetown University soon after taking office in 2009, when he talked about how the American economy would recover from the Great Recession.

Yet, these same policies have been abject failures. The $850 billion 2009 Stimulus didn’t. The nation is becoming one of part time employment. Food prices, energy costs, you name it, they’re rising above pay. There are record numbers of people who’ve given up on getting a job. Record numbers of people on food stamps. The long term unemployed jumped from 2.6 million in 2007 to 5.3 million in 2012. Household incomes continue to fall. College graduates have poor job opportunities and huge debt. The GDP continues to stagnate. One only need look towards Detroit to see the outcome of Progressive economic, and other, policies.

Yet, here’s Obama doing the Neverending Campaign schtick, in what will surely be a blamestorming campaign, going after Republicans while offering nothing more than platitudes and retreads of his failed policies. Oh, and then, as Americans suffer thanks to those same failed policies

(Fox News) The first family is returning this summer to Martha’s Vineyard, the third time the Obamas have vacationed on the exclusive Massachusetts island in the past four years.

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will arrive August 10 and stay through August 18, the White House said earlier this month.

Mr. 1% will spend 8 days living the highlife amongst other 1%er while Americans are having tough times. And this will cost millions in taxpayer money for all the support staff, Secret Service, aids, drivers, and the Coast Guard offshore for protection, while his Sequester leaves our military with furloughs. Quite a juxtaposition: Obama living the highlife while Detroit deals with bankruptcy.

Senate Pushing Bill That Does Nothing To Stop NSA Domestic Spying

Essentially, the bill is window dressing, because most citizens will not bother to read the full details of it. When it passes, it shall surely be positioned as a great bill protecting the rights of all citizens, but…

(The Hill) The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee is pushing to fast-track legislation that would require police to obtain a warrant before accessing emails and other private online messages.

Sen. Patrick Leahy’s (D-Vt.) goal is for the Senate to unanimously approve his bill before the August recess, according to one of his committee aides. Any opposition could delay a vote until after Congress returns in the fall.

Leahy’s bill would not affect the NSA programs, but it would curb the ability of local and federal law enforcement officials to access private online messages.

Under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of 1986, police only need a subpoena, issued without a judge’s approval, to force Internet companies to turn over emails that have been opened or that are more than 180 days old.

This won’t affect the NSA spying domestically on virtually all citizens* in the least. Which is what people are concerned over. Fortunately, the bill would seemingly violate the 10th Amendment in applying the regulations to the States. Maybe. We also have to consider that most communications go over state lines through servers, so, if you’re emailing your buddy across town, the email may bounce to another state first. But, would this be considered “commerce”?

But Grassley and some other Republicans are concerned that the warrant requirement could hinder civil regulatory investigations. Warrants are only available for criminal investigations.

Mary Jo White, chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, sent a letter to Judiciary Committee senators earlier this year, explaining that few of her agency’s cases involve criminal charges. She warned that applying a warrant requirement to the SEC would impede the agency’s “ability to protect investors and to assist victims of securities fraud.”

It’s amazing that we need another law to tell the Government how to act properly. It’s not like we have a 4th Amendment or anything.

Fortunately, the Political Aristocracy doesn’t seem too concerned over the People being spied on.

*just to be clear, I don’t think they’re listening to all our calls and reading all our emails, but they are capturing them, and we really do not know what they are doing with our communications.

NHL Announces Metropolitan Division…Seriously?

In announcing the 2013-2014 schedule, we learn the names for the 4 divisions

(ESPN) The NHL also announced its new division names. The seven-team Pacific and Central divisions will comprise the Western Conference. The eight-team Metropolitan and Atlantic divisions will comprise the Eastern Conference. No teams in what was the previous Atlantic Division are in the new group of that name.

The Metropolitan Division consists of the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets, who have moved from the West to the East.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said player names were considered for the division names but “dismissed rather quickly.”

“I don’t think there was any strong feeling that we needed to move away from geographic descriptors and orientations, which makes it easier for the fans to follow,” Daly wrote in a email to ESPN.com. “Also, while it’s the nature of any exclusive list, I’m not sure assigning division names to four all-time great players is fair to the all-time great players who would necessarily be excluded in that process.”

Daly said the Metropolitan Division was the toughest to establish.

“A number of alternatives were considered for Metropolitan, but due to the make-up of our divisions, none were perfect. So that was, obviously, the toughest one to nail down. But, ultimately, you have to come to a resting place.

Here’s an idea: Patrick, Adams, Smythe, and Norris. At the CBC, 43% want those names. 41% say “anything but Metropolitan”. Only 6% favor the current names.

Someone should be beaten like a rented goalie over that name. Sheesh. Five of the Atlantic Division teams are nowhere near the Atlantic. Those in the…I refuse to call it by its full name, so, from now on, it’s simply the Met Division…Met Division are much closer.
