Deadly Boat Accident Blamed On Climate Change

You know, climate refugees

(EurActiv) Voices from across the developing world are warning EU leaders that a failure to cut CO2 emissions and respect funding commitments for projects to mitigate and adapt to global warming will lead to more climate refugees, and more tragedies like the one in Lampedusa.

As of today (8 October), the death toll from the sunken refugee boat stands at 232 people but, with another 200 still missing, it is expected to rise.

The boat was mostly carrying migrants from Eritrea, which the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says “has suffered greatly from the negative effects of climate variability” since 2000, and now suffers drought every three years.

Do we have long term data on Eritrea? We do know that it sits on the Horn of Africa. It’s eastern part along the Red Sea has generally been hot and dry. Unsurprising. They also deal with constant political issues, including from Islamic extremists, known formally as the Eritrean Islamic Jihad (they go by other names, too).

I do enjoy the part about “negative effects of climate variability”. Will that be the new talking point from Warmists, blaming man for cold and hot? Anyhow, if people can’t adapt to less than a 1.3C increase in temperatures, perhaps they shouldn’t be living in that area.

Interesting. Notice the pause/dip from 2000 on.

Shutdown Theater: Man Fined For Jogging At National Park

Perhaps someone could remind Obama and the Spite House exactly who owns these parks (via Jammie Wearing Fools)

(Philly.com) A marathoner says he was fined $100 for running in Valley Forge National Historical Park during the government shutdown.

John Bell, 56, said he parked his car on Sunday in a remote parking lot, not one blocked by a barrier. Bell, of Chadds Ford, said two rangers were waiting with their car lights flashing when he returned.

Bell said he plans to fight the ticket in federal court. He said he saw many other runners and bikers in the park.

Maine’s Acadia National Park had trouble keeping visitors out during the shutdown and was issuing fines to campers, bikers and hikers. On Saturday, 16 hikers hopped a gate to gain entry to Utah’s closed Zion National Park to protest the shutdown.

Jogging. Yet, it took weeks and months for government to do anything about the Occupy Wall St. crowd, even with all the rapes, murders, stabbings, pooping on police cars and doorsteps, drug use, destruction of public and private property, etc. Yet, somehow, Democrats are backing an illegal alien rally on the National Mall. Which is otherwise closed.

Bummer: Ocean Warming Has Slowed Down By 50%

Don’t you hate when people do science?

(The Hockey Schtick) The currently-favored excuse du jour for no statistically-significant global warming over the past 20 years is that the oceans “ate the man-made global warming.” However, a 2012 paper published in Nature Climate Change torpedoes this notion, finding the global oceans started warming at least 135 years ago just after the Little Ice Age, on or before the historic voyage of the HMS Challenger in the 1870’s. More importantly, the study finds that ocean warming has decelerated 50% over the past 50 years.

If, as claimed, man-made greenhouse gases are causing the oceans to warm, the opposite would have been expected, namely an acceleration of ocean warming over the past 60 years, beginning in the ~1950’s. The fact that the oceans were warming long before CO2 levels significantly increased, and at a higher rate before 50 years ago, clearly demonstrates ocean warming is a natural recovery from the Little Ice Age, and not due to man-made CO2.

The paper is corroborated by a recent paper finding the oceans have warmed only 0.09C over the past 55 years, a rate of 0.0016C per decade, and a 34% deceleration from the rate of 0.0024 per decade over the past 135 years found by this study.

Well, the heat must have just magically disappeared into the deep ocean, right?

Further, climate alarmists claim that the “missing heat” is hiding below 1,500 meters deep, but this paper finds the oceans have instead cooled below 1,500 meters over the past 135 years [see third figure below].

Do not expect Warmists to accept this scientifically collected data: they think their computer models and talking points are more important.

Surprise: Obama Admin. Refuses To Release Enrollment Numbers Till November

I’m thinking they’ll report the numbers sometime between the 27th and 29th

(Jake Tapper) The Obama administration is not planning on releasing enrollment numbers on Obamacare until November, senior administration officials said Monday, as they continued to insist that delays with the healthcare.gov website were entirely the result of high volume.

“We will release monthly data when it is available,” a senior administration official told CNN. “We have not given an exact date, but it will be after end of month and we will work with states to collect their data to have a good picture of what’s happening across the country.”

But the administration has released numbers on the total numbers of visits to the federal site, approximately 8.6 million as of Friday, according to Health and Human Services data. A number cited as evidence of interest in the program. However, it is not clear how many of those who have visited the site were able to successfully use it, or stopped because of technical issues and slow speeds.

One has to wonder how many of those hits come from people using a different computer to attempt to sign up? How many are from people just wandering over to the site? I’ve hit the site from both my laptop and smartphone, which would generate hits. Also, what do they consider a “unique hit”? It’s generally a daily consideration, hence, you could have the same person trying day after day after day. But, hits mean nothing in the overall scheme of things: what matters is how many sign up. And, people will eventually sign up. People have no choice, or they’ll get fined/taxed. Plus, people need health insurance because so many companies are dumping their plans.

Regardless, the only state willing to give out numbers is Kentucky, whose exchange seems to be doing OK, as far as enrollment goes. Of course, these people haven’t actually tried to use the insurance yet.

Hooray! John Kerry Takes Long Fossil Fueled Flight To Complain About “Climate Change”

In a sane world, this would take some serious chutzpah, and the media would call him out for his hypocrisy. We’re not living in a sane world

(The Hill) Secretary of State John Kerry warned Monday the lack of a global commitment to address climate change is “inviting catastrophe” and piling on uncertainty for business.

Addressing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Indonesia, Kerry stressed the impacts of climate change while acknowledging the public’s wariness to accept the scientific data.

Kerry said he understands that “when people talk about climate change, eyes still glaze over.” But he expressed amazement that “against all evidence, there are still some people who wonder if it’s real – and many wonder what they can actually do about it.”

Now, why would people refuse to believe in “climate change” when the people who push it the hardest are 1. advocating bigger and bigger government with more and more control, and 2. massive hypocrites?

Trace Amounts Of CO2 Like Devil Dripping Poison…

Good thing Warmists aren’t prone to grandiloquent hyperbole, especially Harry Eyres (via Tom Nelson

(Financial Times) I have an image of an immense, planet-sized cauldron, into which someone, the devil perhaps, wearing an apron and with a slight look of Heston Blumenthal, is dripping small quantities of poison. The poison will not reach all parts of the cauldron at the same time or in the same concentrations, but there is no doubt that as the great broth is stirred, we will all be thoroughly stewed.

My image is both homely and misleading. There is of course no devil. Or rather the devil is none other than ourselves.

Obamacare Will Impact 800,000 New Jersey Residents

“If you like you insurance plan, you can keep it” continues to ring hollow

(NJ.com)  Hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans opened the mail last week to find their health insurance plan would no longer exist in 2014 because it does not cover all the essential benefits required by the Affordable Care Act.

The news surprised some who were unaware that provisions in the new law known as “Obamacare” were forcing insurance companies to scrap some plans they had previously offered.

“The Affordable Care Act is driving many changes to products and pricing,” said Thomas Vincz, a spokesman for Horizon. “Horizon BCBSNJ is actively working to help our members find new insurance plans that meet their needs and budget.”

The changes will impact more than 800,000 people in New Jersey who purchase insurance on the individual and small-employer markets, according to Ward Sanders, president of the New Jersey Association of Health Plans.

Most, if not all of the health insurance vendors have had to create new plans to deal with the requirements of Obamacare which go well beyond the already burdensome federal and state mandates. Does a 21 year old unmarried male really need maternity coverage? How about mammograms every two years? Fortunately, these 800k people can spend days and weeks sitting on-line and on the phone attempting to obtain coverage. New Jersey premiums were already pretty high, and Obamacare will cause them to rise 10% for a 27 year old female and 34% for a 27 year old male. While reducing the number of doctors and medical facilities available. Increasing waiting times. Reducing care thanks to the Independent Payment Advisory Board (death panels). The lowest cost bronze plan is $332 a month.

Critics, however, say the changes belie the president’s often-repeated claim that if you like your insurance plan, you can keep it.

But state Sen. Joe Vitale (D-Middlesex) said it’s a nuanced promise.

“The president also said he won’t tolerate benefit plans that don’t meet the basic needs of our citizens,” Vitale said.

Why is my health insurance up to Obama?

One reason for the change is that Obamacare cut about $200 billion from the Medicare Advantage program, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service. Some of that money was used to pay for other parts of the law, including provisions that benefit seniors, such as closing the infamous “doughnut hole,” which will reduce the percentage seniors must pay for prescription drugs.

As a person in the comments points out, didn’t Joe Biden and the majority of the media call Paul Ryan a liar for saying this during the debates? Anyhow, somehow this is all supposed to lower your premiums by $2,500 a year. Another person in the comments notes

The prices offered start above 500 per month and require a high deductible and only 60-80% coverage there after. The coverage is not in the same realm to what I have now. There is a policy for 330 that just covers you if you go into hospital….not for specialists or tests.

This was after Mary spent oodles of time online attempting to sign up. Operative word “attempting”.

Advocates of the new law hail the change as a win for consumers, arguing that all plans must now meet minimum standards — that even if these new plans cost a bit more, they will provide much better coverage.

So, now they’re telling us the plans won’t save money?
