Obama Kick Obamacare Requirements Down The Road

Another day, another problem

(Politico) Why do Republicans even bother trying to delay Obamacare? President Barack Obama’s doing it all by himself.

On Thursday, the Obama administration gave customers permission to pay their premiums as late as Dec. 31 for coverage that starts Jan. 1, and officially gave customers an extra week — until Dec. 23 — to sign up for January coverage.

The move was just the latest in a long list of extensions, delays and punts that have plagued the health care law.

The administration is also extending a critical program — the temporary high-risk pool for people with pre-existing conditions — through the end of January, to make sure none of them suddenly lose their health coverage because they can’t sign up for new Obamacare insurance by Jan. 1.

That’s after it postponed the employer coverage requirements for a year, delayed the online enrollment for the federal health insurance exchanges for small businesses, and told health insurers they can extend people’s coverage for an extra year — a last-minute attempt to un-cancel millions of canceled policies. It also delayed the Spanish-language website, even though Hispanics are a large proportion of the uninsured population. It even postponed next year’s enrollment period, pushing it conveniently past the November elections.

Of course, this is still about the website, which is going to work correctly at some point, and, yes, people will sign up. And most likely be moved to Medicaid, but that’s a different story. And probably have their identity stolen, again, a different story. The reality is that at the end of the day, this is still a bad law, which is forcing people to chose between paying a fine/fee/tax or purchasing insurance with high premiums and deductibles, a reduced provider network, rationing, and heavy government interference in your actual health care. Politifact chose “If you like your plan you can keep your plan” as its lie of the year. It should be the lie of the year for the past three years, and share with keeping your doctor.

Meanwhile, some Liberals are really pimping some numbers released by HHS, especially Mother Jones’ Kevin Drum, who pimps the notion of Vermony “kicking ass” when it comes to signing people up for O-care

Which states are doing the best at signing up people for Obamacare? Business Insider has a state-by-state chart here showing the number of people who have completed the process 100 percent: they’ve actually chosen a specific plan and officially enrolled their families. But I figure a better measure of activity is the number of people who have completed an application and been confirmed eligible to purchase private insurance via the exchange. They still have the final enrollment step left, but they’ve obviously navigated everything successfully, which is a good measure of how smoothly things are rolling out.

Here’s a better number: those who’ve paid their initial premium. A better number would be those who’ve paid for it for at least a year. Kevin highlights a chart that shows how many in Vermont, which runs its own exchange, doing will in confirmed eligibility. Have they paid? CNN is running an article noting that 365,000 have signed up

Through November, just over 137,200 Americans have picked an insurance policy through healthcare.gov and nearly 227,500 through the 14 state-run exchanges, according to new federal figures released Wednesday. That’s up from a total of 106,000 who signed up in October.

One problem

These figures reflect people who have selected an insurance plan, but not all have paid their first month’s premium, which activates the coverage. An additional 1.94 million people have been determined eligible to enroll, but have not yet picked a policy.

Of course, HHS doesn’t have the actual figures as to how many have, you know, paid. I can chose products over at Amazon all day long and put them in the shopping cart, however that’s meaningless until I actually pay for them.

Android Tonight – Backup Apps

Just like with your computer, your Android device needs to be backed up (I hope you backup your computer). Here are a few apps that I use, brought on because Mom upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S3, was one of those “give us your phone and we’ll give you this”, and forgot to get all her pictures off her phone. She takes A LOT. She may or may not get them back. Me, I tend to use my real digital camera for when I’m taking lots of photos. Still like to back them up, though.

G Cloud backup – one of the easiest apps I’ve found to backup contacts (though you most like have them backed up through Gmail or something else automatically – if you hate Google, well, using an Android is not the best, right?), photos, vids, documents, and system settings. It can also backup call logs, messages, music, and browser data. You can have multiple accounts all linked in the same gcloudbackup.com account. You can restore data using the app, which is rather important, wouldn’t you say? I tend to use this more for my tablet than my phone.

Dropbox – this is the program I use for photo backups for my phone. It’s set to automatically upload any new photos when I’m on WiFi. Dropbox can be used for many more things. I keep lots of files in it, so they are synced up across my Droids, my laptop, and accessible on the web. All password encoded. I have a couple folders with pictures from favorite trips, books, and a few of my favorite ringtones (some Buffet, Hendrix, and Black Sabbath ones).

Easy App Backup – this is one I use exclusively on my phone, since the HTC One S has an internal only memory card (though I could probably find a way to take the phone apart and yank it out), so making a backup of the apps internally is not necessarily the best idea. With EAB, you can backup to either the memory card or Google Documents. It only backs up the APK files, not data or setting, but, hey, if you have over 100 apps, restoring easily is a benefit. Of course, if the device is lost, well, then, nice to have an online one, eh?

App Backup And Restore – I have this on both my Droids, and have made a backup on both devices. A little more useful on the tablet, since the card is removable.

With the last two, you should do backups every once in a while, it’ll save you some time as the apps are updated.

Helium is supposed to be excellent, supposedly allows app data backup, but, I could never get it to work for my phone, and it is not compatible with my tablet.

Good News: Obamacare To Raise Cost Of Your Kids’ Braces

That’s right, another “unintended consequence”

(WSJ) Here’s something your orthodontist is not smiling about: a new tax rule raised the cost of braces this year.

Thanks to a change from the Affordable Care Act that places an annual $2,500 contribution cap on flexible spending accounts, which let workers set aside pre-tax dollars to cover medical expenses, some consumers may be spending more on braces, expensive eyewear and other medical supplies they would typically buy with the accounts. Before the new rule, there was no official cap on how much taxpayers could stash into the account, though many companies typically set their own limits of $5,000. For a person in the 25% tax bracket, the cap cuts the maximum tax break in half to $625 from $1,250.

For families who relied on the accounts to help them cover the costs of pricey medical services like braces, the cap indirectly raises their costs, says Gayle Glenn, president of the American Association of Orthodontists, which along with some other medical groups is calling for the cap to be eliminated. About 65% of the roughly 17,000 orthodontists surveyed by the association in 2009 said their patients used FSAs to pay for treatment. And with the cost of braces ranging from $5,000 to $7,000, many families likely max out their FSA contributions to pay for them, says Glenn, whose association recently circulated a letter for orthodontists to publish in their local newspapers, encouraging people to write to Congress to challenge the cap. “We want people to be aware,” says Glenn.

I had been aware of the cap on health savings accounts ($2500), but did not know about the FSA restrictions (articles on the difference here and here). And Obamacare is messing both up. Thanks, Democrats!

Why Not Give A Recycled Or Homemade Gift For Christmas Cause Climate Change?

The 25 days of Climate Christmas continue

(Telegraph) This year has been a watershed for public concern about climate change and rising fuel bills. Across Europe and in the traditionally more sceptical United States, more than half the population accept that climate change is a serious threat, and want their governments to do more to limit carbon emissions.

In addition, the grinding years of austerity combined with rising fuel bills mean this Christmas, a home-made or recycled gift will be joyfully received. That doesn’t mean you have to give everyone paperweights made from stones you picked up in a field. There is a wide range of gifts out there, from virtually free to very generous that will not use up precious resources or contribute to environmental damage. Here is a selection of some of my favourite things.

Say, I wonder why fuel bills are rising? Couldn’t be due to yet another cold winter coming coupled with idiotic climate change policies, including the “carbon” allowances and reliance on “alternatives” that do not work when it’s most needed, could it?

Anyhow, Sarah Lonsdale offers 7 ideas for Christmas gifts

  • Vintage/reclaimed
  • Homemade
  • Adopt-a-tree
  • Renewable
  • Recycled
  • Energy saving
  • Esoteric (things like memberships, tickets to exhibits, etc)

These are actually good ideas for Christmas. I’m looking very green with a nice woolen (renewable) pullover for my Mom (I’m not worried she will read this. She’s not in to politics). But, really, the Warmists have once again hijacked common sense items for their ludicrous, harebrained cult.

Politico: Say, Senator Kay Hagan Is In A Speck Of Trouble

Humorously, the article is entitled “North Carolina’s choice“, and when I brought up the Politico app on my tablet and click on the link for the article Politico gave me an add for some sort of beer. Which we need, considering what Kay Hagan and her party have done to North Carolina. She might need one as well, considering that this article is about all her problems, and isn’t even a Politico call to Dems to rally around the Dem banner, which would be the usual

(AP Photo of Senator Hagan being asked what her re-election chances are and where approval for Obamacare stands)

It would be tough to find another state where the political terrain has shifted as dramatically as it has here — from kindling hopes of a Democratic revival in the South just a few years ago, to becoming a conservative hotbed that banned gay marriage, tightened restrictions on abortion clinics and enacted a sweeping voter ID law.

In 2014, voters will have a chance to decide which of those two governing visions they prefer — Barack Obama’s Washington or one-party GOP rule in Raleigh — in one of the most competitive, consequential Senate races in the country.

It will be a choice between Kay Hagan, a rookie Democratic senator who voted for Obamacare and says, however haltingly, that she would do so again, and a conservative challenger — perhaps the figure who shepherded that wish list through the Legislature, Thom Tillis, or other rivals like Mark Harris or Greg Brannon who would go even further.

So far, 473,000 North Carolinian’s have lost their health insurance. We witnessed the failed economic policies of Democrats, particularly Governor Beverly Perdue, who was such a disaster she declined to run for a second term. Hagan has been a big supporter of Obama, having voted 96% of the time for his agenda.

“This race is not about the president,” Hagan said in an interview, twice refusing to say whether she approves of Obama’s job performance.

Which is interesting, because her staff said right after that that she would campaign with the President.

Acknowledging the problems with Obamacare, Hagan said she’s working on “sensible fixes” and insisted that the outcome of the campaign wouldn’t turn exclusively on the Affordable Care Act. Instead, she pointed to her work on local issues such as contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, opposing tougher regulation of tobacco and providing tuition assistance for military service members.

She can try populist deflections, and things that are known as “Doing Her Job”, but whoever receives the GOP nomination is going to beat her over the head day in day out with Obamacare and her voting with Obama 96% of the time.

“I think when you look at this race, what takes place in 2014, it’s about a contrast: It’s about what I’ve done in Washington versus what has taken place in the Republican-controlled Legislature,” Hagan told POLITICO. “They have really been focusing on fringe issues and on policies that work against the middle-class families.”

What has she done in Washington? Voted for a far left progressive agenda. If she wants to try this tactic, it’ll be a hoot.

But when pressed about whether she would back the health care law if she had another chance, Hagan said: “Yeah, I would vote for it again. People have to realize that the cost of health care was getting out of reach for everybody.”

Expect to see that quote in commercials come election season. A lot.

Duke Survey Shows Obamacare To Damage U.S. Employment And Health Benefits

Gee, if only someone had predicted that something like this could happen going back to the time before the “Affordable” Care Act was passed. This was information that people really needed! Interestingly, this survey is mostly being ignored by the national media. Nationally, I can only find an article by CBS News and a blog post with a short blurb at the Wall Street Journal

(WRAL) Corporate financial chiefs say they expect to reduce hiring and also move more jobs to part-time status as a result of the Affordable Care Act, according to a new survey from Duke University and CFO Magazine.

Many companies also are considering a reduction in health care benefits for employees.

“The results were startling to us. This will significantly impact employment,” said Campbell Harvey, a professor of finance at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. “I think the people who drafted the bill probably never anticipated such a negative effect on employment, especially in a time when we really need employment growth.”

Those who crafted, supported, and voted for the ACA might not have anticipated it, but opponents of Democrat health care/insurance “reform” talked about it and predicted it quite a bit. And noted it after passage. And noted the move of so many to part time when HHS released the rules as to what is considered full time. And noted that the economy was partially stuck thanks to Obamacare (oops, that’s a raaaaacist word).

Almost half of the 500 companies surveyed are “reluctant” to hire full-time employees, the survey found, and one in 10 may lay off current employees in response to the law.

More than 40 percent of CFOs surveyed say their companies will consider switching some full-time jobs to part-time jobs in 2014.

“Unintended consequences” or something. Then there’s this from the Duke School of Business, which performed the survey, but is not mentioned in any of the articles on the survey from news organizations

In addition, 44 percent of companies say they will consider reducing health benefits to current employees in response to the ACA.

My, my, my, this law is working out really well, wouldn’t you say?

Amazon-like: Hill Staffers Told Not To Rely On D.C. Obamacare Website

Seriously, the comparison to Amazon.com is beyond ridiculous. Heck, even small consumer websites do better

(The Hill) Capitol Hill staffers who signed up for ObamaCare through the Washington, D.C., healthcare exchange, called DC Health Link (DCHL), are being told to confirm their enrollments in person, and not to rely on data provided by the website.

The Hill obtained an email sent to staffers on Wednesday warning them, “it is essential that you confirm your coverage in DCHL through the Disbursing Office.”

“Do not rely on your ‘My Account’ page or other correspondence from DCHL,” the email reads.

“Please do not assume you are covered unless you have seen the confirmation letter from the Disbursing Office,” the email continues.

You know, just like Amazon. Or Best Buy. Cafe Press. Dick’s Sporting Goods. Crutchfield. WalMart. ProFlowers. Bob’s Bait And Tackle.

The Lonely Conservative notes the “enrollment” figures per Chatty Kathy Sebelius. Allahpundit notes how few have actually paid for their Exchange plans.

Should You Fake Christmas This Year, Cause “Climate Change”?

By fake it, Lesley Allen at Drayton Valley Western Review is referring to Christmas trees, er, holiday trees, er, winter festival trees. Let’s continue with the 25 days of Climate Christmas

Should you fake it this Christmas

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, which should I buy environmentally?

With the Christmas season upon us a great debate among those who celebrate the holiday has begun — should we buy a real or fake tree?

There are many reasons why one chooses to go in either direction, but the one I find people get most confused about is how each of the options affects the environment, and which one is truly greener.

So, which should you purchase, real or fake?

According to Ellipsos, a research company based out of South Carolina, an artificial tree has three times more impact on climate change and resource depletion than the natural tree, based on a six-year retention of the fake tree. However, if you are to keep the same fake tree for at least 20 years the opposite becomes true, especially if longer distances of transportation are required in order to access the real trees.

The reasons for a real tree being more environmentally-friendly include the fact that they are easily recycled and can be reused, they pull carbon from the air to help grow, and because of the environmental footprint it takes to make fake trees.

Regardless of the fact and which direction you decide to go there are ways you can help reduce your footprint:

Lesley then provides super helpful hints to make your decision to purchase a Winter Is Going to Be Super Hot In The Future And We’re All Doomed Tree that much more difficult. Because Christmas, er, the name liberals often hate to mention but still want their paid day off for, should be about climate change or something.
