Will Warmists Switch Back To Calling It “Global Warming”?

Why would they? Because “global warming” causes more fear than “climate change”

(NY Times) Many scientists have come to prefer the term “climate change” over “global warming.” Climate change is a broader term that encompasses not only the warming of the planet in recent years but also the rise of severe storms, droughts and damaging winds. The choice of terms has important implications for polling because Americans give different answers to questions depending on which is used.

According to a report by the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication this week, the terms “are often not synonymous — they mean different things to different people, and activate different sets of beliefs, feelings, and behaviors.” While “climate change” makes many people think of general weather patterns — and natural fluctuations in temperature and precipitation — “global warming” tends to produce connotations of extreme weather.

When asked if climate change was a good or a bad thing, 63 percent of Americans said it was a bad thing, while 76 percent perceived global warming as a bad thing, a 13-point difference.

Of course, the big part here is that the study does not make any differentiation between anthropogenic and natural causation. Here’s how the question is position

On a scale for -3 (very bad) to +3 (very good), do you think (global warming/climate change) is a bad thing or a
good thing?

Only 33% found global warming to be very bad (-3), with 23% for climate change. What’s missing is a zero. I would find a flip to a cool period to be a -2. Human society has done much worse during cool periods than warm periods. Human society has done quite well during the Modern Warm Period, and during the Medieval Warm Period, which was warmer than today.

Essentially, this a study for Warmists, telling them to stop calling it “climate change” and go back to global warming. Of course, if they do that, they wouldn’t be able to Blame cold and snow on Mankind. It would significantly reduce their blamestorming abilities.

Unfortunately for Warmists, when it comes to Americans being concerned that either will harm them, most say “nope!”

Bummer: Fast Food Place Robbed Same Day It Went Sorta Gun Free

Serendipity* is a stone cold mother, isn’t it?

(Daily Caller) On the same day that Sonic, an Oklahoma City-based fast food chain, issued a statement against customers carrying guns at their restaurants, an employee at the company’s Topeka, Kan. store was robbed.

According to Topeka police, two males robbed a carhop on Friday afternoon, reports the Topeka Capitol-Journal. Sonic is unique among major fast food eateries in that it provides customers the option of having carhops bring orders to their vehicle.

While police said no guns were displayed by the robbers, the crime follows a new policy that the Oklahoma City-based company issued Friday.

“We’ve considered the views and desires of our customers and employees that staff the drive-ins across the country,” the company said, according to USA Today. “Accordingly, we’re asking that customers refrain from bringing guns onto our patios or into our indoor dining areas. With respect to the storage of guns in vehicles, we ask that our customers continue to honor local laws.”

You know why places like doughnut shops are rarely robbed? Lots of armed law enforcement. Gun shops are almost never robbed during open operating hours. Why are shootings, including mass shootings, more likely likely in gun free zones?

Chili’s also sorta went sorta gun free, like Sonic

(The Blaze) Chili’s, owned by Brinker International, said in a statement, “We kindly ask that guests refrain from openly carrying firearms into our restaurants and we will continue to follow state and local laws on this issue.”

Judging from Chili’s statement, customers are still permitted to carry a concealed firearm as long as they are complying with the applicable state laws. Sonic’s statement suggests no guns are welcome at their restaurants.

So, at least robbers might think twice at Chili’s in states that allowed concealed carry.

I will add one thing from the other side: leave the rifles and shotguns in the car. Some folks try and make a big demonstration and point by carrying them in to restaurants. Just stop it. There’s no need for that. Yes, you’re exercising your 2nd Amendment Rights. But you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.

*I’m not so sure it was a happy coincidence of good luck for the guy who was robbed.

Obama Weekly Address: Common Sense “Carbon” Reductions Or Something

With so much raging around his ears, especially the VA scandal, for which the Eric Shinseki has finally thrown himself on his sword (though O called him a super awesome guy and the problems weren’t really Shinseki’s fault), O decides that nothing else is as important as instituting “carbon” rules for power plants, artificially raising your power costs, which also will mean raising your cost of living, which hurts lower and middle class folks, not 1%ers like Obama (video here)

Weekly Address: Reducing Carbon Pollution in Our Power Plants

Hi, everybody. I’m here at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., visiting with some kids being treated here all the time for asthma and other breathing problems. Often, these illnesses are aggravated by air pollution – pollution from the same sources that release carbon and contribute to climate change. And for the sake of all our kids, we’ve got to do more to reduce it.

Earlier this month, hundreds of scientists declared that climate change is no longer a distant threat – it “has moved firmly into the present.” Its costs can be measured in lost lives and livelihoods, lost homes and businesses; and higher prices for food, insurance, and rebuilding.

That’s why, last year, I put forward America’s first climate action plan. This plan cuts carbon pollution by building a clean energy economy – using more clean energy, less dirty energy, and wasting less energy throughout our economy.

So, right off the bat Obama discards any notion of science by terming it “carbon” and “carbon pollution”, rather than the proper name of carbon dioxide. There is a difference. And CO2 is a trace gas necessary for life on earth. It’s cute that he dives right in to the meme of asthma being aggravated by anthropogenic climate change. There is virtually no honest science on that, nor any honest science proving that the current rise in temps since 1850 has been caused by Mankind. Certainly, coal fired power plants usage can release particulates that can cause true pollution.

One of the best things we can do for our economy, our health, and our environment is to lead the world in producing cleaner, safer energy – and we’re already generating more clean energy than ever before. Thanks in part to the investments we made in the Recovery Act, the electricity America generates from wind has tripled. And from the sun, it’s increased more than tenfold. In fact, every four minutes, another American home or business goes solar – and every panel is pounded into place by a worker whose job cannot be shipped overseas.

Dear Lord, did he actually mention the utter waste of money known as the Recovery Act? Good grief, there were dozens of companies that failed, costing the US taxpayers billions of dollars. At least $154 billion has been wasted. And these companies are still failing. Few permanent jobs have been created. Energy costs have gone up, and the power grid is in danger when you have a harsh winter like America just went through.

We’re wasting less energy, too. We’ve doubled how far our cars and trucks will go on a gallon of gas by the middle of the next decade, saving you money at the pump – and we’re helping families and businesses save billions with more efficient homes, buildings, and appliances.

At the expense of making vehicles less safe, causing more people to die in crashes. And let’s not forget that gas has been averaging in the mid $3.50 range for most of Obama’s presidency, around a 96% increase from the day before he took office.

This week, we will. Today, about 40% of America’s carbon pollution comes from power plants. But right now, there are no national limits to the amount of carbon pollution that existing plants can pump into the air we breathe. None. We limit the amount of toxic chemicals like mercury, sulfur, and arsenic that power plants put in our air and water. But they can dump unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into the air. It’s not smart, it’s not safe, and it doesn’t make sense.

We limit those other “chemicals” (technically, all three are Elements) because they can cause actual air quality and life issues. CO2, not so much.

That’s why, a year ago, I directed the Environmental Protection Agency to build on the efforts of many states, cities, and companies, and come up with commonsense guidelines for reducing dangerous carbon pollution from our power plants. This week, we’re unveiling these proposed guidelines, which will cut down on the carbon pollution, smog, and soot that threaten the health of the most vulnerable Americans, including children and the elderly. In just the first year that these standards go into effect, up to 100,000 asthma attacks and 2,100 heart attacks will be avoided – and those numbers will go up from there.

In Reality World, that would be purely an emotional laden strawman. If it’s so bad, then why

So the idea of setting higher standards to cut pollution at our power plants is not new. It’s just time for Washington to catch up with the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, a good chunk of the world is moving past these silly “carbon pollution” regulations as their economies stagnate, jobs wither, and costs rise. Not to mention not having power available during the brutal winters over the last 6 years.

As President, and as a parent, I refuse to condemn our children to a planet that’s beyond fixing. The shift to a cleaner energy economy won’t happen overnight, and it will require tough choices along the way. But a low-carbon, clean energy economy can be an engine of growth for decades to come. America will build that engine. America will build the future. A future that’s cleaner, more prosperous, and full of good jobs – a future where we can look our kids in the eye and tell them we did our part to leave them a safer, more stable world.

Yet, he has the largest carbon footprint in the world. In the history of the world. It’s a pretty good bet that he will hit the golf course today. That typically involves a large motorcade of fossil fueled vehicles for the trip to and fro. He will most likely take a trip across the country for a bunch of fundraisers, sandwiched between an official event or two to avoid having to pay for the use of Air Force 1, in the next week or two. This involves a helicopter flight to the airport, a flight on AF1 (with the backup following), a large motorcade driving all around, then reverse it back to the White House. This is the behavior of a typical climahypocrite, who will force you to suffer for his beliefs, but won’t change his own behavior, and, in fact, is one of the worst climate offenders.

And Americans still tend to put the climate at the bottom of their concern list, especially having suffered through the crummy Obama economy for all these years.

As far as the planet being “beyond fixing”, refer to the above graphic.

Hotcoldwetdry Causes Infidelity Or Something

Is there anything it can’t do?

(Watts Up With That?) From the Al Gore Sex Poodle Institute and the “almost too stupid to print” department comes this: New report blames global warming for rising rates of infidelity

I like the way Anthony Watts worked Al Gore in. On to the nutty story

Victoria Milan, a dating website for people looking to cheat on their significant other, surveyed 5,000 of its members, both men and women. A shocking 72% of them responded that yes, their own Al Gore-esque stress about unpredictable weather is the cause of their extra-marital dalliances.

Guess the fact of their existing committed relationships was just an inconvenient truth. Survey respondents also reported that they’re more likely to sneak a little on the side in hot weather than in cold.

I’d love to see the study itself, but, then, does it really matter?

“Summer loving is something everyone experiences when they’re growing up, and the excitement and thrill of doing something a bit naughty never fades,” explains Victoria Milan CEO and founder Sigurd Vedal in a statement. “It’s no surprise that one half of a couple feels the itch when the weather warms up.”

So let’s recap: hot, unpredictable weather makes for unfaithful partners. Just when you thought your hope of finding true love in Miami had hit rock bottom, a story like this comes along to prove there’s even farther to fall. But hey, we’ll all be underwater in 15 years anyway, right?

Of course, when has the weather been predictable? And, if they don’t like hot, perhaps Miami is not the place to live. Anyhow, this is just more insanity for the cult. And, as Anthony Watts points out, it’s not like the website isn’t encouraging people to cheat.

Kay Hagan Totally Comes Out Swinging Against Thom Tillis…

…on “climate change”.  This has totally psyched Raleigh’s WRAL

U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan spent much of the primary season on the defensive, as both Republican candidates and outside groups attacked her for her support of the Affordable Care Act.

A super PAC associated with U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid aired ads in recent months pounding away at state House Speaker Thom Tillis – even before he captured the May 6 primary – to bolster Hagan, but she remained relatively quiet.

That changed Tuesday night, when Hagan teed off on her challenger during a stop in Raleigh.

Speaking at the annual Green Tie Awards dinner of the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters, Hagan criticized Tillis on the issue of climate change and the “special interest agenda” he has advanced in the legislature.

“Unlike my opponent Thom Tillis, who flatly denies the existence of climate change, I know the EPA’s ability to responsibly regulate greenhouse gas emissions is key to protecting our environment for future generations,” Hagan said.

Well, that’s interesting. Let’s flip over to Raleigh’s News and Observer

Even though she declined to sign a letter with 45 of her Senate colleagues, North Carolina’s Kay Hagan said she has asked the Environmental Protection Agency to delay new regulations designed to limit carbon emissions for power plans.

In a separate letter, the Democrat wrote to EPA Secretary Gina McCarthy to extend the public commend period to four months from two months. (See attached.) (snip)

Hagan’s office acknowledged her letter was not publicly released.

On one hand, she’s whining at Tillis about not supporting the EPA’s Hotcoldwetdry push. On the other, she’s sending a secret letter to McCarthy asking to delay the same economy killing regulations.

Of course, this matters little, because, at the end of the day, Tillis will obliterate her over Obamacare and the tepid economy. Climate change is not going to move the needle here in North Carolina in the least. Kay forgot this

Second to last in cares. And she also forgot about this

After a rough winter in NC, few will care about this distraction issue.

State Spokesweenie: “Obama Doesn’t Give Himself Enough Credit”

“Credit for what?” (via The Lonely Conservative)

(Washington Free Beacon) State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki was openly mocked by the assembled press corps Thursday after saying President Obama “doesn’t give himself enough credit for what he’s done around the world.”

Associated Press reporter Matt Lee asked sarcastically whether he deserved 200 percent credit, while another one wondered for what “accomplishments” Psaki meant he deserves more praise.

“For engagement initiatives like Iran, what we’ve done on Ukraine, efforts to dive in and engage around the world,” she said.

“I mean, Russia has still annexed Crimea,” another reporter asked. “I mean, Iran — there’s ongoing negotiations, but is that the success here that you’re talking?”

“We’re talking about engagement in the world and taking on tough issues that present themselves,” Psaki said. “And the United States continues to play a prominent role doing that.”

This lead to an outbreak of snickers, guffaws, and snorting laughter.

Other than some minor things, whacking Osama (thanks partly to Bush era policies), and his continued heavy use of drones (I like this policy a lot), what has Obama done? Iran is stalling for time. Russia controls Crimea. The Mideast is a mess. Even Canada is upset with him (over Keystone XL). His big Asian pivot? He came home with nothing. And then Russia and China announced a big working relationship. Well, he has done well ignoring the nutjob leader of North Korea, refusing to give in when NK gets frisky. Past presidents have fallen for the trap and given NK stuff. Personally, though, I think Obama just can’t be bothered to engage. That would be hard work.

Similarly, Fareed Zakaria pulls out some strawmen, claiming “Obama is battling a knee-jerk sentiment in Washington in which the only kind of international leadership that means anything is the use of military force.

In this context, what is needed from Washington is not a heroic exertion of American military power but rather a sustained effort to engage with allies, isolate enemies, support free markets and democratic values and push these positive trends forward. The Obama administration is, in fact, deeply internationalist — building on alliances in Europe and Asia, working with institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations, isolating adversaries and strengthening the global order that has proved so beneficial to the United States and the world since 1945.

The problem here is that Obama’s limited engagement with our allies has mostly ended with them thinking he’s a lightweight, foolish, weak, and a narcissistic jerk. They don’t trust him. Our enemies are not being isolated. Where has he truly supported free markets and democratic values abroad? He barely does this at home. He’s not building alliances. Unless one considers taking selfies at funerals “building alliances”. Zakaria even pulls out an Eisenhower quote

But Eisenhower kept his powder dry, confident that force was not the only way to show strength. “I’ll tell you what leadership is,” he told his speechwriter. “It’s persuasion — and conciliation — and education — and patience . It’s long, slow, tough work. That’s the only kind of leadership I know — or believe in — or will practice.”

The operative word is “work”. Obama doesn’t. If it requires more than a long, drawn out campaign speech, it won’t be fixed.

Palin Says Illegals Get Better Care Than Veterans, To Some Degree

Well, Team Obama and Democrats certainly works harder to make sure that illegals are treated better overall (video available at Mediaite)

(Politico) Sarah Palin says illegal immigrants are getting better health care than the country’s vets.

“In many respects, illegal aliens in our country today are receiving better health care, more benefits than our troops,” Palin said in an interview on Thursday with FOX’s “Hannity” at the Republican Leadership Conference.

Addressing the scandal at the Department of Veterans Affaris, Palin and host Sean Hannity made comparisons between Guantanamo Bay and the VA, claiming that the ratio of doctors to prisoners is 1 for every 1.5, while the VA has a ratio of 1 doctor for every 35 vets.

When Hannity called the VA a “death trap,” Palin agreed.

“And that is what government-run health care will result in,” Palin said. “It’s inefficient, it takes away choices and isn’t it ironic that those who are willing to sacrifice all, to put their lives, to allow freedom of choices…they’re the ones getting screwed by the VA.”

Let’s be clear: for the most part, veterans receive at least decent care. And even the NY Times notices that there is, in fact, a doctor shortage at the VA. Yet, there are more than enough that receive substandard care. That wait. And wait. And wait. Have you ever tried to call the VA? Good luck with that. I’ve dealt with both the VA and Social Security Admin, needing documents. For the SSA, I typically wait about 15-20 minutes for a representative. In every case, they’ve been pleasant and cooperative. The documents I need are faxed within 25 minutes. In each and every time I’ve needed to call the VA, I have received a message that the Greensboro facility (that’s where the calls route to for the Raleigh area) is busy, please call back later. One cannot even enter a hold cue. I simply tell vets to go to the VA to get the documents now.

Are illegals treated better? They receive medical care. The receive schooling. They seem to end up with welfare and food stamps. Homeland is now saying not to target illegals at courthouses. At every turn, this administration is rolling back The Law along with finding ways to give illegals better care and help. Yet, when it comes to the VA scandal, what should have been an easy subject for Team Obama has turned into a typical Obama scandal. He’s yanked out his scandal playbook, of which many Democrats are refusing to cooperate with, and is truly failing our vets. It’s not hard to imagine that if a head of a federal department was seeing illegals treated poorly, that person would be canned in a heartbeat.

NY Times: Climate Change Like Totally Doomed The Ancients

See if you can guess what is missing from the op-ed by Eric H. Cline in the Times, in all but a brief mention

Climate Change Doomed the Ancients

THIS month, a report issued by a prominent military advisory board concluded that climate change posed a serious threat to America’s national security.

The authors, 16 retired high-ranking officers, warned that droughts, rising seas and extreme weather events, among other environmental threats, were already causing global “instability and conflict.”

But Senator James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee and a stalwart believer that global warming is a “hoax,” dismissed the report as a publicity stunt.

Perhaps the senator needs a history lesson, because climate change has been leading to global conflict — and even the collapse of civilizations — for more than 3,000 years. Drought and famine led to internal rebellions in some societies and the sacking of others, as people fleeing hardship at home became conquerors abroad.

One of the most vivid examples comes from around 1200 B.C. A centuries-long drought in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean regions, contributed to — if not caused — widespread famine, unrest and ultimately the destruction of many once prosperous cities, according to four recent studies.

Perhaps Eric needs that history lesson, since pretty much every mention of failed civilizations resulted from the Earth moving from a warm to a cool period during the Holocene. The Hittites, mentioned because they dealt with a long period of drought, were dealing with a cooling climate.

While sea levels may not have been rising then, as they are now, changes in the water temperature may have been to blame for making life virtually unlivable in parts of the region.

A 2012 study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science found that the surface temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea cooled rapidly during this time, severely reducing precipitation over the coasts.

Wait, cooling waters were causing problems?

We still do not know the specific details of the collapse at the end of the Late Bronze Age or how the cascade of events came to change society so drastically. But it is clear that climate change was one of the primary drivers, or stressors, leading to the societal breakdown.

The era that followed is known as the first Dark Ages, during which the thriving economy and cultures of the late second millennium B.C. suddenly ceased to exist. It took decades, and even hundreds of years in some areas, for the people in these regions to rebuild.

Last time I checked, the Dark Ages were a period of cooling.

But there is one important difference. The Late Bronze Age civilizations collapsed at the hands of Mother Nature. It remains to be seen if we will cause the collapse of our own.

Wait, what? Mother Nature? Why can’t MN be the cause now? And, it sure seems that civilization flourished during the warm periods and had lots of problems during the cool ones.
