Having Nothing Better To Do, Democrat Senator Threaten NFL Over Tax Status For Redskins Name

Democrats have spent lots of time dealing with populist and other issues that really do not help the US citizenry, all in an attempt to keep the Senate Democrat. They write bills that include poison pills to make sure that Republicans will not vote for it. They do things like pushing the so-called “equal pay” bill for a second time this year, a bill that will primarily benefit lawyers and give even more private and personal data to the Federal government. They refuse to even consider the hundreds of economic bills passed by the House. Nor have they taken up the defense authorization bill. And now

(AP) A U.S. senator threatened the NFL with legislation over Washington’s nickname, a letter was dispatched to the other 31 team owners, and the issue was linked to the league’s others recent troubles Tuesday as the anti-“Redskins” movement took its cause to Capitol Hill.

In a news conference that featured Native American, civil rights and religious leaders, Sen. Maria Cantwell took aim at the NFL’s pocketbook by announcing she will introduce a bill to strip the league’s tax-exempt status because it has not taken action over the Redskins name. While prospects for such a bill becoming law would be tenuous, the inevitable hearings before lawmakers would enhance the spotlight on a movement that has gained substantial momentum over the last two years.

“The NFL needs to join the rest of America in the 21st Century,” said Cantwell, D-Wash., the former chairwoman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. “We can no longer tolerate this attitude toward Native Americans. This is not about team tradition. This is about right and wrong.”

Awesome. Government extortion. The Godfather would be very proud. I love the “21st Century” talking point. Democrats love trotting that out, in regards to ISIS and Russia. We keep being told they’re “living in the past”. Yet, they keep going.

71% of Americans still support the Redskins name. The numbers have dropped from back in 1992, mostly due to Democrats toeing the line in Believing In What A Good Progressive Should Believe Because They’ve Been Told To Believe That Way.

Halbritter had harsh words for the league as a whole, referencing the NFL’s handling of health problems suffered by former players, as well as the recent Ray Rice domestic violence saga and the child abuse charge levied against Adrian Peterson.

“The NFL is currently facing an integrity crisis. … While these are different issues, they are joined by a common thread of showing commercial and moral arrogance and a blatant lack of respect for those being negatively impacted,” Halbritter said.

Good grief. It’s absurd to conflate serious, real issues with a ginned up controversy in which most people do not see any disrespect towards Indians. But, this is yet another attempt at populism, avoidence of dealing with serious issues, and federally elected Democrats using their position to bully private citizens and entities.

NC Sea Rise Is Under 7 Inches Per Century

Per a new paper

(The Hockey Schtick) A new paper published in Quaternary Research reconstructs sea level rise in North Carolina over the past 1000 years and finds sea level rise since 1845 has been only 1.71 mm/year, equivalent to 6.7 inches per century and in line with many other papers finding global sea level rise of less than 7 inches per century.

Data from the paper indicates no evidence of acceleration since the end of the Little Ice Age in ~1850. No acceleration of sea level rise means no evidence of a man-made contribution. The data also shows that sea levels “paused” their natural 20,000 year rise during the Little Ice Age from ~1,200 to  ~164 years ago.

Let’s put this in context: the average sea rise during the last 7,000 years of the Holocene (this time period used because that’s around the time that the massive sea rise from melt due to the end of the last glacial period stabilized) is 6-8 inches per century. During warm periods we should expect more sea rise, and during the cool ones less. That’s how we get an average.

Still, even if it was 20 inches per century right now, it wouldn’t prove anthropogenic causation.

Obviously, Warmists will state that sea rise is going to happen in the future, even if it isn’t happening now, and it will doooooooom us!

Bummer: Nature Refuses To Cooperate With Dryer/Wetter Warmist Prognostication

Darned nature, just doing it’s own thing

Rules of thumb for climate change turned upside down

With a new analysis of land regions, ETH climate researcher are challenging the general climate change paradigm that dry regions are getting drier and wet regions are getting wetter. In some regions they are encountering divergent trends.

Based on models and observations, have devised a simplified formula to describe one of the consequences of : regions already marked by droughts will continue to dry out in the future . Regions that already have a moist climate will experience additional rainfall. In short: dry gets drier; wet gets wetter (DDWW).

However, this formula is less universally valid than previously assumed.

The hell you say!

The evaluation shows no obvious trend towards a drier or wetter climate across three-quarters of the land are. There are solid trends for the remaining quarter. However, only half of this surface area follows the DDWW principle, i.e. one-eighth of the total landmass, while the trends seem to contradict this rule over the other half.

Some regions which should have become wetter according to the simple DDWW formula have actually become drier in the past – this includes parts of the Amazon, Central America, tropical Africa and Asia. On the other hand, there are dry areas that have become wetter: parts of Patagonia, central Australia and the Midwestern United States.

In some areas it cooperates, in others, not so much. Sounds like mostly natural variability to me.

I do see one problem in the study, which should be noted. The “researchers compared data from between 1948 and 1968 and 1984 to 2004.” That is not a great comparison, since the former was a period of cooling and the latter was a period of warming. At least till 1998, but we have still have had elevated temperatures. At the end of the day, though, this highlights how climahysterics rely on computer models spitting out preconceived notions to uphold their far far left policies.

Obama: 3000 Military Personnel To Fight Ebola

Going all in

(USA Today) President Obama on Tuesday will announce an expansion of a $763 million U.S. plan to help West Africa nations fight the spread of the Ebola virus, officials said Monday night.(snip)

About 3,000 U.S. military personnel will be in West Africa to lead the project, officials said.

Interesting. 3000 for this, slightly over 450 to serve as advisors in the fight against ISIS, but no actual fighting troops

The virus does not threaten the United States, and will not if the right steps are taking, officials.

So, no imminent threat to the US, no threat at all. Come on, liberals, step up, tell us how we shouldn’t become involved in someone else’s fight, and should not be putting our people and troops in harms way. Should we be paying for this? Should we even become involved? It’s not our fight. These are the arguments the Left uses.

And, no, I have no problem with helping in the fight against Ebola. Perhaps we should be as serious when it comes to Islamic extremism.

Mexican Woman Denied Temporary Visa To Allow Her To Donate Bone Marrow

The Obama administration seemingly has no problem with tens of thousands of illegal alien children crossing the border and letting them stay. They have no problem with the millions of illegal alien children already in the United States. They have no problem with the vast number of adult illegals already here, wanting to put them on a path to citizenship. They refuse to truly secure the border. One lady wanting to donate bone marrow? Problem

(Fox News Latino) An Atlanta woman is in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant and says the government is standing in the way of her life-saving donor.

Alicia Nino De Palma, 51, has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. Her sister is a full match, but she lives in Mexico and the United States has denied her visa.

In a letter to immigration services from an Atlanta area hospital, they state that De Palma’s sister is the only fully matched donor available.

In the denial letter, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico states that the relative did not demonstrate they have ties to Mexico that will compel them to return to their home country after the visit. The De Palma family says the sister has children who live in Mexico and owns two homes which constitutes as ties, according to the U.S. Embassy.

The De Palmas say it’s frustrating because their aunt has taken the proper legal steps in order to enter the country for a good purpose. They’re desperate because time is running out.

The family and their attorney are going to continue to attempt to get the visa approved. One would think this would be a slam dunk, allowing the aunt to come to the States for the transplant. It’s the humane, and right, thing to do. Perhaps the aunt should simply show up at the border, give herself up, then disappear after being let go and travel to Atlanta. That’s what happens with most other illegals.

Remember When Richard Branson Pledged To Spend $3billion On Climate Change?

How’s that working out?

(UK Guardian) Richard Branson has failed to deliver on his much-vaunted pledge to spend $3bn (£1.8bn) over a decade to develop a low carbon fuel.

Seven years into the pledge, Branson has paid out only a small fraction of the promised money – “well under $300m” – according to a new book by the writer and activist, Naomi Klein.

The British entrepreneur famously promised to divert a share of the profits from his Virgin airlines empire to find a cleaner fuel, after a 2006 private meeting with Al Gore.

Branson went on to found a $25m Earth prize for a technology that could safely suck 1bn tons of carbon a year from the atmosphere. In 2009, he set up the Carbon War Room, an NGO which works on business solutions for climate change.

But by Klein’s estimate, Branson’s “firm commitment” of $3bn failed to materialise.

$300 million is not chump change, to be clear. But, it is not the $3 billion promised.

“So the sceptics might be right: Branson’s various climate adventures may indeed prove to have all been a spectacle, a Virgin production, with everyone’s favourite bearded billionaire playing the part of planetary saviour to build his brand, land on late night TV, fend off regulators, and feel good about doing bad,” Klein writes in This Changes Everything, Capitalism vs The Climate.

Actually, we’re right on most of the Warmists, particularly the leaders, who live a different life than what their talking points, prognostication, and hysteria demands.

NYC Climate March Is Going To Have It’s Populist Moment Or Something

Good thing all these fossil fuels hating Warmists aren’t going to take fossil fuel trips to attend the march, eh?

Climate Change Is About to Have a Populist Moment

Why an upcoming demonstration in NYC is so important

Nine days from now, on September 21, organizers of the largest climate change march in history expect at least one hundred thousand of people to join the People’s Climate March in New York City. Happening just before the United Nations holds a summit on climate change, the real goal of the march is to show convening world leaders that climate change isn’t just a policy issue that matters only to scientists and policy wonks. The idea is to show that climate action is a populist movement, too—and one that’s capable of making some noise. (snip)

Remember, the next year is a critical one for fighting climate change. We know that at some point, very soon, humans will need to slow their use of fossil fuels if we hope to contain global warming to a manageable level. Somehow that needs to be balanced with China and India’s interests in economic and population growth. Climate experts and poorer countries hit hard by extreme weather want a binding global deal to reach emissions targets. To get there, there will be another UN meeting in Peru in December, leading up to Paris in 2015, where—activists hope—an agreement can be finalized.

Iain Keith, a campaign organizer for Avaaz, a group organizing the march, may have summed up the goals of the day best.  “We realized that a march could send a powerful signal,” Keith told Inside Climate News. “Marches don’t always change the world, but sometimes they are the only things that shake the system into widespread change.”

If only Warmists had spent the last 25 years spreading awareness and demonstrating and stuff.

When the facts refuse to accommodate you climahysterics, you can always fall back on populist movements, chants, marches, hyperbole, doomsaying, and marches.
