“Climate Change” To Cause More Severe Frosts

The cult is at it again

(ABC Australia) Frosts like the ones that caused so much damage to crops this season could be more common for the next 20 years, according to scientists.

They say greenhouse gases in the atmosphere were changing the way high pressure systems formed and moved, causing severe frost problems for farmers.

Is there nothing that you driving your fossil fueled vehicle which releases heat trapping greenhouse gases can’t do?

“It was very, very large as well, so that’s why it took so long to cross the continent and it basically just dragged very cold, dry, stable air in from the Antarctic and dumped it onto the regions affected.

“Basically what that meant was we had five days in a row of temperatures that were sub-zero in major cropping regions for 12 hours.

“It’s the duration of those events that caused the devastating damage that producers are seeing.”

Ms Rebbeck said the synoptic changes were coming as a result of greenhouse gases.

Got that? Cold is caused by hot. And people wonder why skeptics refer to this as a cult.

Oops: Climate Change Has Nothing To Do With Altering Forest Tree Compisition

(PSU News) Change in disturbance regimes — rather than a change in climate — is largely responsible for altering the composition of Eastern forests, according to a researcher in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences.

Forests in the Eastern United States remain in a state of “disequilibrium” stemming from the clear-cutting and large-scale burning that occurred in the late 1800s and early 1900s, contends Marc Abrams, professor of forest ecology and physiology.

Moreover, Abrams noted, since about 1930 — during the Smokey Bear era — aggressive forest-fire suppression has had a far greater influence on shifts in dominant tree species than minor differences in temperature.

“Looking at the historical development of Eastern forests, the results of the change in types of disturbances — both natural and man-caused — are much more significant than any change in climate,” said Abrams, who is the Steimer Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management.

“Over the last 50 years, most environmental science has focused on the impact of climate change. In some systems, however, climate change impacts have not been as profound as in others. This includes the forest composition of the eastern U.S.”

The very fact is, changes in climate will have some effects. And, the Earth is in a constant state of flux. During the Holocene, for one, there have been swings between warm and cool, with pauses, as well as short term cooling/warming during the cool/warm periods. The debate is not about climatic changes, which occur, but causation. Warmists hyperventilate that the current changes are mostly/solely caused by Mankind. Skeptics say it is mostly/solely caused be nature. Interestingly, the Warmists are so concerned that they mostly refuse to take even token measures in their own lives to reduce their “carbon footprints”.

Also, interestingly, what Professor Abrams is partly referring to is land use, which can have a profound affect on more localized climate (micro-climate), which creates false readings for global aspects.

NC State Fair Brings The Sacrilege

(Salisbury Post) The upcoming North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh will feature some grub that has its roots in Rowan County.

State Fair Foods, based in Gold Hill, will have one of its food trailers at the fair and will be selling its latest creation: Carolina Barbecue on a stick dipped in a hush-puppy batter.

Sounds good, right?

No, it sounds like sacrilege. Barbecue should always be treated with reverence. Always.

BTW, I’m not kidding.

Fearmongering Or Reality: Airborne Ebola

Making the rounds of the news and Internet are stories about Ebola possibly becoming airborne, which would create a nightmare scenario of epic proportions. Ebola has always been a direct fluid/blood transmission disease. If it could be transmitted through the air, well, for a disease with at least a 70% death rate….well, you can imagine. But, is it true?

(WND) While Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization officials continue to insist Ebola cannot be transmitted by air from one person to another, an Army manual clearly warns the virus could be an airborne threat in certain circumstances.

The handbook published by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, USAMRID, titled “USAMRID’s Medical Management of Biological Casualties Handbook,” is now in its seventh edition.

The most recent edition was published in 2011, with more than 100,000 copies distributed to military and civilian health-care providers around the world.

On page 177 of the handbook, in a chapter discussing “Viral Hemorrhagic Fever” (VHF), a category of viruses that includes Ebola, USAMRID says: “In several instances, secondary infections among contacts and medical personnel without direct body fluid exposure have been documented. These instances have prompted concern of a rare phenomenon of aerosol transmission of infection.”

Obviously, WND tends to be a bit over the top, yet, that is in the handbook. What about National Geographic?

But just as worrisome as the virus’s geographic spread is its journey across the evolutionary landscape. Is it mutating in ways that could make it more dangerous to humans? Is there any chance that it might become transmissible through the air, like the flu, the SARS virus, or a common cold?

Although Ebola becoming airborne is the ultimate disease nightmare, that seems to be almost vanishingly improbable, for reasons well put in a recent article in the Washington Post by Laurie Garrett, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations. What is now a fluid-borne virus attaching itself to cells lining the circulatory system can’t easily change into one that targets the tiny air sacs in the lungs.

“That’s a genetic leap in the realm of science fiction,” Garrett wrote.

Whew! But

(CBS DFW) The executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons says that despite what the CDC is saying, Ebola might be transmitted by breathing.

“What we’re suggesting is that it is very dangerous to assume that one cannot ever acquire Ebola from an aerosol or from breathing,” said Dr. Jane Orient.

And

(Breitbart) On Tuesday’s “Hannity,” Dr. David Sanders, a Purdue University virologist and expert on the Ebola virus, elaborated on a claim he made earlier in the week, which he argued of the possibilities the current strain Ebola inflicting its wrath on West Africa and in a handful of cases in the United States and Western Europe could mutate and become a threat to be transmitted through the air.

There are plenty of these sometimes “just wondering out-loud” and/or “we’re potentially doomed” articles, some from more credible sources than others, all of which are Not Helping The Show, in terms of being the type of thing that shouldn’t be hyped. Here’s one that is a both reassuring and bit disturbing

Despite fear that the Ebola virus will rapidly mutate into an airborne pathogen, that possibility is low, scientists say

In August, researchers in West Africa, Europe and the United States sequenced the genomes of Ebola virus isolated from dozens of patients and found it acquired mutations as it spread. They did not test whether those genetic changes affect its ability to infect and survive.

“It’s an extremely difficult thing to speculate about,” said Charles Bailey, executive director of the National Center of Biodefense and Infectious Diseases at George Mason University, who was not involved in the study. “Is a mutation capable of making it airborne transmissible? Nobody knows.”

Of course, why worry about it becoming airborne when it has become “airborne“, in terms of people flying airplanes while infected with Ebola.

Poll: Most Voters See Things Going To Hell In A Handbasket

Well,  this is a new one

(Fox News) The world’s “going to hell in a handbasket,” according to a majority of voters in the latest Fox News poll.

And that’s draining support for President Obama’s policies. But will it help Republicans on Election Day? Unclear.

The new poll, released Wednesday, finds 58 percent of voters feel things in the world are “going to hell in a handbasket.” That includes nearly half of Democrats (48 percent) and majorities of independents (61 percent) and Republicans (71 percent).

Some 35 percent of voters channel Bob Marley’s mantra that everything will be all right.

Meanwhile, by a 61-36 percent margin, voters say they don’t feel hopeful about the direction of the country. That’s a reversal from 2012 when 57 percent felt hopeful. The shift is driven by a nearly 30-point drop among Democrats: 80 percent felt hopeful two years ago, while just 52 percent say the same now. In August 2012, Democrats were likely buoyed by Obama’s re-election campaign.

That question is a real one. Page 5 of the poll results. Then there’s this, to go with the direction of the country questions

…by a 10 percentage-point margin, more voters think the country is “worse off” today than before Obama was elected (49 worse off vs. 39 better off).

Seriously, who could have predicted that a community organizer with virtually no experience in the federal government, who never had any serious legislation passed, who never held a real job supervising people and making a budget would be so incompetent. I wish someone had told us of the potential danger.

And then there’s this: voters not only think his signature legislation ObamaCare is “mostly a bad thing” for the country (52 percent), they also believe the administration misrepresented the law to get it passed (55 percent).

Does that really require comment?

The danger for Democrats is that by large numbers Independents find things to be Not Going Well.

Bob Seger Goes Climahysteric

Let me note that Bob Seger is one of my all time favorites. Not only is his music great, he is one of the best live concert rockers of all time. He and his band, the Silver Bullet Band, are not only technically proficient live, but, kick it up a notch. And make it fun. You don’t go to the concert and say “the album is better”. If you’ve never listened to one of his live albums or seen him live, you’re missing something (others who are great are Rush, Jimmy Buffet, the Grateful Dead (won’t be seeing them live) and Martina McBride). But, unfortunately, Bob has decided to use his last gasp album for climate change and anti-gun messages

(Detroit Free Press) Bob Seger, the Midwestern meat-and-potatoes rock ‘n’ roller, is going worldly.

“Ride Out,” his first album in eight years, features familiar Seger themes of hope, honesty and moving forward, and finds him taking stock of a music career that has now hit the half-century mark.

But it’s also his most explicitly political work in years, tackling debt, gun violence and what the Detroit singer-songwriter calls “the No. 1 issue,” climate change.

“I’m talking to the whole world this time,” Seger says from his rustic work cabin in Clarkston, where the walls are lined with guitars and a fridge is adorned with family photos.

I hate quoting Debbie Schlussel, but she makes a good point

Above is an aerial view of Seger’s multi-million-dollar, 30,000-square-foot mansion on LaPlaya Lane in Michigan’s wealthiest city (by average income), Orchard Lake Village, Michigan. (I’m very familiar with Orchard Lake because when I ran for the Michigan House of Representatives, I campaigned in and won the city.) But don’t let the facts that Seger owns many cars, made millions off of licensing his songs for Chevy truck commercials, and has a carbon footprint as big as Al Gore’s get in the way of Seger’s new desperate, politically-correct attempt to stay relevant. At age 70, his latest–and probably his last–album, out Tuesday, is full of anti-gun and global warming pimpitude. Apparently, this formerly patriotic songman has spent too many “Hollywood Nights.”

Environmental matters dominate several new songs, most notably “It’s Your World” (“Say a prayer for the victims of extinction,” he sings. “Say another for the redwood trees”). It’s an ominous-toned take on climate change that Seger knows could prove divisive among fans. Here, after all, is one of the Industrial Belt’s most prominent musicians going green. He says his management team “is petrified of it.”

“There are a lot of culprits in climate change, and everybody’s responsible, myself included,” he says, voice rising. “Nobody gets a free pass on this one. We’ve got to change our ways and change them fast.”

Will Bob be traveling around in fossil fueled vehicles, like buses, trucks, planes, and cars, during his upcoming tour? Like he’s been doing for decades? What about all the energy required to put on a show? Does he/did he have armed security protecting him? As Debbie S. points out, regarding the song “Devil’s Right Hand”, which is anti-gun, he is an avid hunter. Hmph. His giant mansion has 12 air conditioner units. Remember, they are bad for “climate change”.

Let me note one thing: I really do not care for most preaching politics in songs, at concerts, or in books. Even if it is stuff I agree with. If it’s subtle, fine. Mostly, though, it distracts. And, let’s face it, liberals are typically as subtle as a blowtorch to the testicles.

Fact Checker Notes Dems Are Lying Crap Weasels On CDC/NIH Cuts

Of course, Glenn Kessler doesn’t specifically call them lying crap weasels, but does give them 4 Pinocchio’s

On many levels, this line of attack is absurd.

Obama’s Republican predecessor oversaw big increases in public-health sector spending, and both Democrats and Republicans in recent years have broadly supported efforts to rein in federal spending. Sequestration resulted from a bipartisan agreement. In some years, Congress has allocated more money for NIH and CDC than the Obama administration requested. Meanwhile, contrary to the suggestion of the DCCC ad, there never was a specific vote on funding to prevent Ebola.

There’s no doubt that spending has been cut, or at least failed to keep pace with inflation, but the fingerprints of both parties are on the knives. This blame game earns Four Pinocchios.

Interestingly, it was President Bush who really started kicking up the funding for the CDC and NIH (National Institute of Health). The funding leveled off in 2006,  and,  surprise, Democrats, who are whining now, didn’t bother kicking it up during the 4 years they fully controlled Congress.

In fact, something Kessler notes in passing, and I noted here, the recent budgets from Obama (which Democrats utterly refuse to vote on nowadays), recommended cuts to the CDC and NIH. Furthermore, let’s not forget that it was Obama who came up with the idea of Sequestration.

But, hey, this is the Democrat Party. For all their self absorbed utterances that they are the party of compassion, of looking forward, of being oh so nice, they’re nothing more than a bunch of sleazeball jerks. Sure, politics is a nasty business, but these people make the rhetoric emanating from the Westboro Baptist Church and ISIS look tame in comparison. They are simply nasty people.

2014 Midterm Issues: “Climate Change” Is Dead Last

In other words, most people just don’t care

(Gallup) The Republicans in Congress hold significant leads over the Democrats on four of the six issues that U.S. registered voters say are most important in determining how they will vote in November: the economy, the way the federal government is working, the situation with Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria, and the federal budget deficit. Democrats, by contrast, top their Republican rivals on just one of the six: “equal pay for women.”

And what we see from this is that “climate change” comes in dead last when it comes to issues that are part of midterm platforms. Fortunately for Democrats, this gives them a 20 point advantage over Republicans! Yay!

Regarding the rest

These results are from a Sept. 25-30 poll in which Gallup asked registered voters to rate the importance of 13 issues to their vote for Congress, and then to indicate which party would do a better job on each issue. The accompanying graph simultaneously displays the rankings of these issues on both dimensions. The higher an issue is, the greater the Republican Party’s advantage. And the farther to the right an issue is, the more important it is to the electorate.

The 13 issues measured in the new poll include eight that appeared in a Gallup Poll conducted in April, before the midterm campaign season came into full bloom, plus five new ones. In total, six issues were rated above the average of 69%, in terms of the percentage of voters saying they are extremely or very important to their vote:

  1. the economy (88%)
  2. the availability of good jobs (86%)
  3. the way the federal government is working (81%)
  4. the situation with Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria (78%)
  5. equal pay for women (75%) and
  6. the federal budget deficit (73%)

Of those 6 issues, the only one the Democrats are rated as doing better than GOP is equal pay for women.
