Over the past 10 years, the Cult of Climastrology has been working hard to compare the tiny increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide to previous periods, particularly those which featured mass extinctions. This outline of doom has become more prevalent over the past 4 years as they have dramatically increased their scary prognostications in an attempt to make people fearful enough to stop tuning their cult out. Now, we have the NY Times giving a platform to Peter Brannen, who writes about world ending doom quite a bit, but, get this, isn’t a scientist, but, just a journalist. This is the lead opinion piece this morning in the Opinion section
When Life on Earth Was Nearly Extinguished
It has been called the “Great Dying.â€
The planet’s most profound catastrophe struck 252 million years ago, at the end of the Permian period, killing 90 percent of life in the ocean and 75 percent on land. The fossil record nearly goes silent and remains startlingly impoverished for millions of years: trees disappear, bacteria replace coral reefs, insects hush. What looks like fungus spikes in the fossil record, perhaps the sepulchral rot of a dying world.
It was as close as earth has ever come to being sterilized altogether, and would take 10 million years for the planet to fully recover, setting the stage for the eventual rise of the dinosaurs.
“The End-Permian mass extinction is unique in earth history,†said Seth Burgess, a geologist with the United States Geological Survey. “Nothing else is as severe, and it’s not even close.â€
Yeah, it was pretty bad, but, hey, it gets worse!
A growing body of evidence suggests that this ancient apocalypse was brought on, in large part, by gigantic emissions of carbon dioxide from volcanoes that erupted across a vast swath of Siberia. Today the consequence of quickly injecting huge pulses of carbon dioxide into the air is discussed as if the threat exists only in the speculative output of computer models. But, as scientists have discovered, this has happened many times before, and sometimes the results were catastrophic.
In fact, most scientific research shows that it was a combination of the massive volcanic release, reduced oxygen levels, and increased methane levels. Some even suggest that there was one or more strikes from a comet or asteroid that caused the event.
This month the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology published a special issue that explores a growing body of evidence that past volcanic releases of carbon dioxide may have helped drive many of the most extreme die-offs in earth history.
Of course it does. Because climate change doom from carbon dioxide is all the rage.
Though volcanoes in Siberia had already been erupting for around 300,000 years, Dr. Burgess’s work indicates that it wasn’t until the magma started burning through fossil fuels on a colossal scale that the mass extinction began. The carbon dioxide was delivered to the atmosphere just as effectively as by any coal-fired power plant or minivan muffler today.
Wait, did the life present at the time have fossil fueled vehicles and planes?
Today humanity plays the role of that primeval Siberian supervolcano, burning through the world’s ancient stores of carbon, long buried underground in the form of oil, coal and natural gas. Though there were likely other killers afoot in the Great Dying — like ozone-destroying halocarbons, acid rain and a heavy dose of toxic heavy metals raining from the volcanic smog — it was the chemistry-warping pulse of carbon dioxide that has attracted the most suspicion for its role in nearly ending the world. And we have only to look at the modern ocean to see why.
Not mentioned in this unhinged rant, nor, quite frankly, most others that precede it, is that atmospheric CO2 was over 3,000ppm. And, yes, it did jump big time. But, so did the methane levels while the oxygen levels dropped. This is all per reconstructions. But, hey, chemistry-warping carbon pollution because you drove a fossil fueled vehicle to work.
As you can expect, the rest of the screed is all about man-caused dooooooooooom, attempting to scare people into giving up their money and freedom while empowering Big authoritarian government. They just never get the idea that trotting out stories of doom, especially trying to say we’re on our way to the next mass extinction, just doesn’t help their cause.

This is not a repeat from the release of the last terrible horrible no good Sharknado (#4) movie, in which the people involved yammered on about climate change and how the movie relates to it. This is a new level of insanity
(NY Post) Climate change bites!
A “Sharkicane†— a terrifying twist on the meteorological havoc wrought in the cult flick “Sharknado†— is more likely than ever to strike Earth, the movie’s creator jawed to The Post.
“Sharknado 5: Global Swarming†takes a campy dive into what might happen if climate change spiraled out of control — and features a raging hurricane-tornado that sucks up massive man-eaters and spits them out onto Rome, London and Amsterdam.
But as the planet heats up, wild weather patterns really do increase the chance of a fishy storm of biblical proportions, according to “Sharknado†originator Thunder Levin.
“We know that powerful enough tornadoes and hurricanes can lift large objects, including sharks if they’re passing over water,†said Levin, who wrote the screenplay for the original “Sharknado,†which aired on the Syfy channel to great finfare in 2013.
“As global warming gets worse, it adds more energy to the atmospheric system,†he said. “So it’s perfectly logical: A more powerful weather phenomenon makes [a Sharkicane] more likely.â€

Interestingly, tropical storm systems and tornadoes numbers have gone down over the years.
One expert agreed it’s a whale of a problem — that could increase the chances of end-of-days-style hurricanes.
“It’s a scientific fact that we are living in a warmer world. And it will continue to increase and accelerate as more carbon enters the atmosphere,†said Bill Patzert, a climatologist at the California Institute of Technology.
If a scientist is yammering on about “carbon” rather than the scientifically proper term “carbon dioxide”, they’re talking politics as laid out in the Cult of Climastrology handbook, not science.
This whole thing is just stupid. And then the Cultists wonder why people are tuning out despite all the propaganda push.

One of the refrains we hear from those who support illegal aliens is that they are fine with the “good ones” but not the criminal ones. In practice, though, the supporters and sanctuary jurisdictions look to protect all illegals. Like this upstanding one
(Oregon Live) Federal immigration agents lodged a detainer in December 2016 against the man accused of attacking two women in Northeast Portland this week, officials said.
When Sergio Jose Martinez was held in the Multnomah County Jail on Dec. 7, 2016, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requested local authorities notify the agency prior to releasing him, spokeswoman Virginia Kice said in a statement to The Oregonian/OregonLive on Friday.
Martinez has been deported 20 times, according to Multnomah County court documents. He has a lengthy criminal record that includes several convictions in Oregon and burglary convictions in other states, according to court documents and the immigration agency.
Local authorities released Martinez on Dec. 8, 2016 without notifying immigration authorities, Kice said.
Oregon law prohibits public agencies from spending money, using equipment or enlisting personnel to enforce federal immigration law.
Martinez would qualify as one of the “bad ones”, wouldn’t you think? In this case, ICE was not even asking for a hold, just a heads up for when he would be released so they could come get him. Is it really so burdensome to place a call or send an email?
Martinez is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her Northeast Portland home on Monday morning, then stealing her credit cards and car. Police say he attacked another woman in a parking garage later that day.
He is charged with several crimes including first-degree robbery, sex abuse and robbery and second-degree assault.
These crimes are on the heads of Sheriff Mike Reese and the people who passed the Oregon law. Do they require that personnel, money, and equipment cannot be used to enforce other federal laws, such as kidnapping? No. If interim ICE Director Thomas Homan wants to look to charge people for violations of immigration law, here’s a good place to start. There are many statutes broken, and many parts of the statutes, such as in 8 US 1324, that were broken by the jail and the lawmakers who passed the law that disallows cooperation with federal law.

Today’s prognostication of doom, in which the political climate scientists have found a new way to create a scenario of doom that is not disprovable. Using computer models, of course
Scientists just found a surprising possible consequence from a very small amount of global warming
Even if we meet our most ambitious climate goal — keeping global temperatures within a strict 1.5 degrees Celsius (or 2.7 degree Fahrenheit) of their preindustrial levels — there will still be consequences, scientists say. And they’ll last for years after we stop emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
New research suggests that extreme El Niño events — which can cause intense rainfall, flooding and other severe weather events in certain parts of the world — will occur more and more often as long as humans continue producing greenhouse gas emissions. And even if we’re able to stabilize the global climate at the 1.5-degree threshold, the study concludes, these events will continue to increase in frequency for up to another 100 years afterward. The findings were published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change.
“It was really a surprise that what we find is after we reach 1.5 degrees Celsius and stabilize world temperatures, the frequency of extreme El Niño continued to increase for another century,†said Wenju Cai, a chief research scientist at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization and one of the study’s lead authors. “We were expecting that the risk would stabilize.â€
So, if any big El Nino’s occur, they can now Blame ‘climate change.’ And if they do not occur, they can say “see? We told you that these big government measures and taxes and stuff worked.” But, you know there will be big ones in the future, because that’s what happens. And little ones, which will also be linked to and blamed on anthropogenic climate change.
The researchers used a collection of 13 climate models to simulate a scenario in which global carbon dioxide emissions peak around the year 2040 and then decline, a trajectory that would keep the world within the 1.5-degree threshold. They then took note of how frequently these extreme events occurred in the simulations.
You can pretty much throw it in the garbage at this point.

This is what happens when you let your feelings get in the way of science
(Syracuse.com)  Three years ago, Syracuse University announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind “climate change garden” to study the effects of climate change on plants.
But today, the garden of 100 trees and shrubs in front of SU’s $114 million life sciences building is being ripped up and replaced because many of the trees were simply too big and are already dying.
“The specifications we used were those of a landscape architect who wanted the garden to look nice right off the bat,” said Doug Frank, one of two SU professors running the project. “The trees were too big and root masses too small, so we weren’t able to really get them to a stage where we felt they were healthy and we could use them.”
Here’s what they were thinking in terms of plants being doomed from small increases in CO2 (otherwise known as “plant food”) and warmth (because plants do awesome when it’s cold) from the “announced” link
“My hypothesis would be that the local species would not do as well over time,” Frank said. “You would see their growth rates decline, and the species native to warmer climates would see increased growth rates. I think of our garden as a harbinger of what Central New York forests will look like in the future.”
Now back to the new article
“It was a kind of comedy of errors,” said SU biology professor Jason Fridley, who works with Frank on the garden.
The whole “science” of anthropogenic climate change in a nutshell.
