NY Times Is Suddenly Very Concerned About Executive Pardons

At least when it comes to one person, the NYT Editorial Board is upset

Say No to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Mr. Trump
By pardoning an official who showed contempt for a judge, the president would show contempt for American courts.

It would be difficult for President Trump, who has insulted judges and tried to interfere with a federal investigation, to show much more disrespect for the rule of law. But if he makes good on his implicit vow to pardon Joe Arpaio, the disgraced former sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., Mr. Trump would be scorning the Constitution itself.

Mr. Arpaio, an anti-immigrant hard-liner who served 24 years in office before voters tossed him out last November, was convicted in July of criminal contempt of court for disregarding a federal judge’s orders to stop detaining people based solely on the suspicion that they were in the country illegally.

So, Sheriff Joe was attempting to uphold the laws of the U.S. that state that people who are here illegally should not be here. And ignored a SJW judge who was attempting to protect the trespassing aliens. Now, let’s be honest, Joe should not have disregarded the judges order in such a manner, he should have continued the legal fight. But, this was a minor thing, which could see him jailed for no more than 6 months.

But, what of another person?

President Obama’s Last Chance to Show Mercy

President Obama did the right thing in granting clemency to Chelsea Manning, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking huge amounts of classified information about American diplomatic and military activities in 2010. Ms. Manning, who has served nearly seven years, is to be released on May 17.

Of course, it was Mr. Obama’s overly aggressive Justice Department that sought, and in 2013 won, that absurdly long sentence in the first place. The average sentence for those convicted of leaking classified material is one to three years.

Why, yes, that was also the NYTEB. Manning earned that long sentence for the amount of classified information leaked and how damaging it was. He was convicted on 19 felony charges, 12 of those being under the Espionage Act and for theft.

But, Manning was a darling of the uber-left, especially as he came out as gender confused.

Regardless, there is a vast difference between what Sheriff Joe did and what Bradley did. And you can see the leftwing bias in the NYTEB in how they treat the two issues.

Soon To Be Fired SportsCenter Host: ESPN Should Focus On *GASP* Sports

People have long gotten tired of all the politics and social justice warrioring on sports broadcasts. There are plenty of liberals who do not want to hear it. They just want sports. If they were advocating conservative views (not that they would or do), I wouldn’t want to hear it. Wrong forum for it.

(Mediaite) Sage Steele, ESPN‘s new SportsCenter morning co-host, wants the network to pivot from discussing political issues and return to focusing on sports coverage — a move that many conservative viewers have called for.

“I do believe that people come to [ESPN] for their sports. Not everybody agrees with me on that, not everybody I work with agrees with me. That’s my personal opinion, that that’s where we go to escape,” Steele told the New York Post.

SportsCenter used to be the best, as did ESPN. The SJW stuff has gotten worse, and I can’t even tune in anymore. CBSsports.com has gone down this road, too, making it virtually unreadable. It doesn’t help that the coverage of the NHL has become virtually nill, and coverage of other sports has drastically decreased at sports sites.

However, Steele did add that there are exceptions to this, including the debate over Colin Kapernick‘s lack of employment. “When there is an obvious crossover, like Colin Kaepernick, that is a different situation, and we will have in-depth discussions beforehand to talk about the proper way to handle it,” the host said.

“I do not look forward to discussing [Kaepernick] on SportsCenter, I really don’t,” Steele added on the topic during an interview with the Washington Post.

The problem here is that it is constant, and there are constant viewpoints and Pronouncements. A little bit is one thing. It’s constant.

The changes Steele has made to SportsCenter include focusing on showing sports highlights and doing more analysis, changes Steele framed by saying, “we are going to be doing things a little bit differently” and “people don’t watch SportsCenter to hear about Charlottesville.”

No, we don’t. That’s what the news is for. But, you know ESPN will continue doing this stuff as they have this and that human interest story which have all sorts of spreading awareness messages and SJW stuff entwined.

(Fox News) Steele, who has never been afraid to voice her opinions, hopes to see ESPN’s style revert to the days when Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann hosted “SportsCenter” — and coverage revolved around sports.

“As a viewer, I want to see the highlights, I want to hear from Rich Hill,” said Steele. “That’s what I want as a viewer, and that’s what I believe most viewers want when they turn to ESPN, is less of this.”

Of course, it’s too late for ESPN, as a good chunk of the population has tuned ESPN out, and will only come back for brief appearances of certain sporting events. They won’t sit around for the other stuff.

And, with this pronouncement, Steele’s days at ESPN are surely numbered, as she isn’t toeing the SJW line.

Unsurprisingly, Warmists Are Bringing ‘Climate Change’ Into Discussion Of Hurricane Harvey

Media members of the Cult of Climastrology are cute, in a deranged, cultish kind of way. First up, the HuffPost’s Lydia O’Conner

Texans Brace For ‘Life-Threatening’ Hurricane Harvey To Hit Friday

A large swath of Texas began bracing for intense rainfall and flooding as Hurricane Harvey neared its coast Thursday.

Harvey could be the first hurricane ranked as Category 3 or stronger (sustained winds of at least 111 mph) to make landfall in the U.S. since 2005. It is expected to hit late Friday or early Saturday. Nearly the entire Texas Gulf Coast, from Port Mansfield to Sargent, is under a hurricane warning. If it makes landfall, it will be the strongest hurricane to hit the Texas coastal bend in 47 years, according to The Weather Channel.

The National Hurricane Center announced Thursday afternoon that Harvey was “rapidly intensifying” and became a hurricane after initially being categorized as a tropical storm. It strengthened even further overnight, growing into a Category 2 storm with winds of 105 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

It’s actually a good article, right up to

Climate scientists have long warned that hurricanes will become stronger and more frequent as human activity drives up global temperatures. Already, Harvey is emerging as potentially historically significant.

Is it worth the effort, once again, to highlight just what those prognostications were and how they utterly failed? Even the UN IPCC refuses to link/connect hurricanes to anthropogenic climate change.

Then we have Brendan Gibbons at San Antonio Express-News

Harvey’s intensity and rainfall potential tied to global warming

Global warming is making the oceans hotter, fueling the intensity and flooding potential of storms like Harvey, climate scientists said as the hurricane approached.

Driven by higher-than-average temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico, Harvey quickly intensified Thursday and is likely to reach Category 3 hurricane status before it hits the Texas Coast. (snip)

As the Earth’s climate warms because of human burning of fossil fuels, scientists have seen tropical cyclones become more intense and predict they will continue doing so.

Except, the actual evidence of such is sketchy, anecdotal, and just talking points

Since the 1980s when high-quality satellite observations became available, scientists have seen an increase in the “intensity, frequency, and duration” of Atlantic hurricanes, along with the number of Category 4 and 5 storms, according to the 2014 National Climate Assessment.

Well, yes, because the satellites see more. Prior, you couldn’t know about all the storms unless ships recognized them or they came ashore. Can they, with high certainty, say hurricane activity is any different from, say, 1900, or back during the Little Ice Age? But, wait, what’s this?

What scientists can’t say for sure is whether hurricanes and tropical storms are happening more frequently.

Unlike some other extreme weather events like heat waves, blizzards and rainstorms, hurricanes are relatively rare. In Texas, two named storms make landfall every three years, on average, Nielsen-Gammon said. For Category 3 storms and above, the average rate is one per decade, he said.

In other words, those two paragraphs contradict the rest of Brendan’s missive. Because he did write that they were happening more frequently. Multiple times. And, despite the averages, Texas hasn’t seen a hurricane since Ike in 2008, and last saw a major hurricane was Rita in September 2005.

There are plenty more of climate nutters out there, and you can expect the list to grow and become more hysterical, but, let’s look at something else in the HuffPost article, which is repeated all over the place

Corpus Christi Mayor Joe McComb said at a news conference Thursday that the city is “almost at the threshold for mandatory evacuation” and urged residents to make arrangements now.

“I’m not going to risk our police and fire people going to try and drag somebody out of the house if they don’t want to go,” McComb said. “Because our fire and police, they’re fathers and mothers, brothers, sisters, uncles. They’ve got relatives and they’ve got family, and we don’t want to put them in harm’s way because someone just wanted to stay.”

Harvey, like all tropical systems, is not too be messed with, and due to the forecast that it will hang around, will be beyond dangerous. There are always those people who do not take it seriously, then have to be rescued, putting fire and police, and military, at risk. Those same people often then whine about it taking so long and such. If they put themselves in harm’s way, yes, this is on them.

Wackos Seek “Regime Change”, Using Tactics That Got Trump Elected

My good blogbuddy Fritz at A View From the Beach has a long running meme “Reason XXXX That Trump Won”, such as this one on Obama’s legacy and lies regarding Afghanistan. Well, here’s another

Anti-Trumpers Seek Regime Change As They Plan Nationwide Protests

A group of anti-Trump protesters hopes to revive tactics of the Occupy Wall Street movement in November in order to get the president out of office.

The self-described “resistance” force announced they plan to not only continue their campaign to protest the president until he is removed from office, but they hope to double down on their efforts by creating several longer lasting protests in which individuals occupy a set space for weeks or months at a time, according to a report from Politico Wednesday.

“We must begin in the key cities with several thousand people in each,” Organizer Andy Zee said about the plan. “We can imagine the protest site alive with serious discussions and debates over the big issues of the day, strategizing about the road forward in our struggle to drive out the regime.”

The resistance groups held meetings in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Austin, Texas over the weekend, and plan to copy Occupy Wall Street tactics to occupy a large piece of land in several cities across the country until Trump is either removed from office or resigns.

So, uber-Progressives in uber-Progressive cities whining about wanting uber-Progressivism (nice fascism) and planning on using the same tactics that turned people off to start with, bringing us Trump? Good move, slick.

Let’s remember OWS. The pooping on police cars and the properties, including stairs, of homes in the areas of the camps (remember, the people who lived in those homes would typically sympathize with OWS). Property destruction. Violence. Heavy drug use. Will they be bringing back the rape free zone tents?

That’s right, OWS in NYC and other Democrat run cities needed areas set aside for women to be safe from being raped by other Occupiers.

What, exactly, did OWS accomplish? Well, there were those unshowered folks living in tents. People leaving their families. The pooping. Lots of demands and manifestos that amounted to nothing. One of their initial complaints was about money in politics, how corporations and the 1% had all the power, while We the People didn’t. They might have found partners in the Tea Party, but, then OWS trotted down the road to being all things SJW, from ‘climate change’ to inequality to abortion on demand.

And rape free zones.

Surprise: Hurricane Harvey Blamed On ‘Climate Change’

If Harvey hits Texas as an actual hurricane, which is looking likely, it will have been the first time in 9 years that Texas was hit by a hurricane. And one of the few actual hurricane strikes on the continental U.S. since 2008. If it makes it to major hurricane status (category 3+), which is a possibility, it would be the first time since Wilma in October of 2005.

So, of course, we get this

CNN: If You’re White And Voted For Trump, You’re A White Supremacist Or Something

President Trump constantly calls CNN a fake news station, and then they fight back saying “no we’re not!” And then CNN runs things like this

(Daily Caller) CNN used the voices of a few professors and activists to assert anyone who voted for President Donald Trump is a white supremacist in a news report Wednesday, and to blame these “ordinary” people for the violence in Charlottesville.

Trump voters helped advance white supremacy by giving them room to operate, CNN reported based on the assertions of others in a piece headlined, “‘White Supremacists by default’: How ordinary people made Charlottesville possible.”

“It’s easy to focus on the angry white men in paramilitary gear who looked like they were mobilizing for a race war in the Virginia college town,” CNN reported. “But it’s the ordinary people — the voters who elected a reality TV star with a record of making racially insensitive comments, the people who move out of the neighborhood when people of color move in, the family members who ignore a relative’s anti-Semitism — who give these type of men room to operate.”

It’s the old “unconscious racism” meme, but, the part about anti-Semitism is interesting, considering all the anti-Jew and anti-Israel sentiment rampant throughout the Democratic party. You see it on college campuses all over the country, especially with the anti-Israel BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) and pro-Palestinian terrorist crowd.

CNN put the weight of the assertion on the views of what they described as “activists, historians and victims of extremism,” but made no visible effort to question their assertions or provide a counter point of view. Fordham University professor Mark Naison’s, for example, is quoted prominently in the piece accusing tens of millions of Americans of being white supremacists.

“We are a country with a few million passionate white supremacists — and tens of millions of white supremacists by default,” Naison told CNN. He’s a political activist and history professor. He compared all Trump voters to “nice people” who facilitated the horrific violence of the Holocaust and the genocide in Rwanda by looking the other way.

Um, what? It was President William Jefferson Clinton and the United Nations which did nothing about Rwanda. It was National Socialists, a form of the Progressive movement, which facilitated the Holocaust, the same base belief set as today’s Progressives.

You can chalk this kind of moonbattery as yet another reason Trump won, and why people who voted for him aren’t walking away.

White House To Release Plan For Gender Confused In The Military

Nothing says stable and reliable while handling weapons in action against the enemy like being majorly depressed and having a high suicide rate, putting the mission and fellow service members at risk

(NY Times) President Trump is preparing to give the Defense Department formal authority to expel transgender people from the military in an upcoming order, barring the Pentagon from recruiting transgender troops and cutting off payment for sexual reassignment surgery and other medical treatments for those already serving.

A White House memo that is expected to be sent to the Pentagon in coming days gives Jim Mattis, the secretary of defense, six months to enforce the transgender ban that Mr. Trump announced abruptly last month in a series of tweets. The directive was confirmed Wednesday by a person familiar with its contents but who was not authorized to discuss its details and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The authority has not yet been finalized. Once it is approved, it would allow Mr. Mattis to force out transgender service members by setting a legal standard of whether they would be able to deploy to war zones or for other lengthy military missions.

This was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, however, their article is behind the paywall.

“It is unconscionable that the commander in chief would take aim at his own, loyally serving troops for political reasons at a time when the military needs to focus on real threats,” said Aaron Belkin, the director of the Palm Center, a research institute that had worked with the military to devise its policy on admitting transgender service members.

“Imposing one set of standards for transgender troops, and another set of standards for everyone else is a recipe for disruption, distraction and waste,” Mr. Belkin said.

Except, there are all types of standards of who can serve in the military and in specific units. Color blind? Don’t expect to serve in special forces or fly a plane. To join, one must pass certain physical requirements, including weight and physical fitness. Mental fitness is also a requirement. Having major depression and/or being suicidal are issues that would keep someone out.

(Daily Caller) The American Military Partner Association, a pro-LGBT organization, condemned the memo as a “vicious assault.”

“Despite the overwhelming bipartisan condemnation of his reckless tweets, President Trump is still pushing forward with his vicious assault on transgender service members,” said AMPA President Ashley Broadway-Mack in a statement. “His foolhardy assertion that transgender service members are not able to deploy is simply not rooted in fact. Transgender service members are just as deployable as any other service member. These brave men and women are already risking their lives for this country around the world. They have earned their right to appropriate medical care, and President Trump’s attempt to rip that away is beyond unconscionable.”

Just as deployable? Someone who is very likely to be depressed and suicidal isn’t exactly the person you want next to you during a firefight. Appropriate medical care? The U.S. military shouldn’t be paying for sexual reassignment surgery. If the gender confused want it, let them pay for it. On their own time. Not taking lots of time off from their job to transition. And, let’s face it, if you want to cut your own testicles and penis off while taking hormones and such, you’re mentally disturbed.

You can’t join the military if you have a long list of mental disorders, such an eating disorders, sleep walking, antisocial attitudes, ADD, OCD, and so much more, including

Mood disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, psychoses, and other unspecified depressive issues are disqualifying.

Any history of suicidal behavior, that includes discussions, gestures, or the actual attempt is disqualifying. A history of self-mutilation is also disqualifying.

And, technically, being a transvestite is still considered a mental disorder by the US military, regardless of Obama’s order.
