California Looks To Do Its Own Big Government Controlled Net Neutrality

Yes, we have survived. No zombie outbreaks, no invasions from Mars, people aren’t scrolling through their social media looking for things to be Outraged over at speeds we haven’t seen since dial-up was the only game in town. You know, back when we had no net neutrality, and the loose regulations saw the ‘net go from speeds of under 52kbs to ones in the megabites per second in less than 10 years. I’m running 200mbs. It’s great! But, of course, California (via Jazz Shaw at Hot Air)

(CBS SanFran) California state Sen. Scott Wiener vowed Thursday to introduce a bill that would require net neutrality in California.

Following the Federal Communication Commission’s repeal of net neutrality Thursday, Wiener (D-San Francisco) wrote on a Medium post:

“There are several ways we can bring net neutrality to California. California can regulate business practices to require net neutrality, condition state contracts on adhering to net neutrality, and require net neutrality as part of cable franchise agreements, as a condition to using the public right-of-way for internet infrastructure, and in broadband packages.”

Net neutrality, a principle that Internet service providers should provide equal access to web content, has been fiercely championed by tech entrepreneurs.

Wiener said he is working with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union on crafting a bill and said they “are exploring all of these options and welcome additional ideas as we work over the next 60 days to craft the bill and formally introduce it.”

Looking at Wiener’s statement, his whole idea seems to be (surprise!) massive government intervention in how the Internet runs in California. In controlling the companies who spent billions of dollars crafting the ‘net. In turning the Internet into a public utility. Why does every policy prescription from Democrats revolve around more government control? Because you know this won’t be a light touch. Obamacare started as an idea to make sure that the 30-45 million without health insurance could get it at an affordable price. Look what we ended up with.

Oh, and don’t forget how expensive the insurance became, quite often with deductibles that make said insurance virtually unusable.

As Jazz Shaw points out

California doesn’t have their own internet. (Which is kind of a shame because if they did, the rest of us could simply filter them out.) So if they’re going to impose state-level regulations on entities which operate on a national and, in most cases, international basis, that means that those providers and associated entities are going to need to set up an entirely separate service structure for users inside that one state. (Well… possibly two states, since Washington is talking about it too.) That’s going to cost extra most likely. And who is going to pay those additional costs for special services? If you said the service providers will just suck it up, buy yourself a ticket to Venezuela where such thinking is all the rage.

So, Californian’s will have to pay a whole lot more thanks to Democrats (provided it passes) to complain about Trump’s FCC getting rid of the federal net neutrality. Which, again, since Liberals do not listen and retain anything other than anti-Trump slogans, only killed off the rules initiated in 2015, not the light touch rules put in back in 2005. And were not necessary the previous 15 years.

Whiny People Plan To Sue To Keep Government In Charge Of Internet

Hey, sure, we want the same people Glenn Greenwald exposed years ago in terms of spying on everything that happens on the ‘net to be in charge of the Internet

THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS Commission will no longer protect net neutrality. Now, officials in more than a dozen states are trying to take on the job.

Within minutes after the FCC voted to jettison its Obama-era rules that prohibit internet providers from blocking or discriminating against lawful content, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said he would lead a multistate lawsuit against the agency to preserve the regulations. Ars Technica reported that that so far attorneys general in Illinois, Oregon, Massachusetts, and Washington have also announced suits. Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller’s office tweeted that he will consult with other attorneys general about a suit. Others are likely to join as well—18 state attorneys general signed a letter encouraging the agency to delay the vote.

Of course, this was a regulation by an unelected, unaccountable agency which was implementing a solution in search of a problem. Which is also funny, because Statists also complain when they lose at the Supreme Court, whiny about 5 unelected judges making decisions. Versus 3 FCC commissioners.

I actually like this idea, because it will force Democrats to stand up and make an argument that empowering the government to treat the Internet just like a utility and putting the government in charge is what they ultimately want.

Editorial: A global push on climate change thrives without Trump

Though the Trump White House ignores climate change, the rest of the world isn’t neglecting the doomsday issue. A top-level gathering of global leaders in Paris is pushing ahead with plans to cool temperatures and shift economies at a hurry-up pace. (big snip)

The determined spirit can’t disguise the political challenges that remain. The Paris accords reached in 2015 are built on regular progress in ratcheting down emissions in five-year increments. That ambitious direction was to be underwritten by billions in subsidies from wealthy, polluting nations, a circle that no longer includes the U.S.

And full stop: we have global elitists attempting to control economies for their beliefs and redistribute money, which will end up harming the U.S. middle and lower classes. It’s good that Trump isn’t involving the U.S. in this scam.

‘Climate Change’ Is Already Wreaking Havoc On Our Weather Or Something

This comes from the same people who usually tell us that weather is not climate after a cold snap or snow, right before they tell us that cold and snow are a result of ‘climate change’

Climate Change Is Already Wreaking Havoc on Our Weather, Scientists Find

The Arctic is melting with no turning back. Climate change increased rainfall during Hurricane Harvey by at least 15%. And several extreme weather events that occurred in 2016 would not have been possible without man-made global warming.

These are among the findings being discussed this week at this fall’s meeting of the American Geophysical Union in New Orleans, the largest gathering of Earth scientists in the world. Taken together, the findings show the deepening urgency of the fight against climate change.

Did you ever notice that they almost never discuss the good things from a warming world (regardless of your opinion on causation), like increased growing season, fewer heating days, fewer deaths from cold, shorter flu seasons, and so on? It’s always doom with this crowd.

Anyhow, weren’t we told by multiple scientists that the Arctic would be ice free by now?

“Climate change is hurting us without a doubt,” said James Byrne, a professor at the University of Lethbridge who studies climate change, at a press conference. “Houston, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, British Columbia — worst fire season ever. California, I think they declared it the worst fire season.”

Scientists have explored the link between climate change and extreme weather events for years, but many of the conclusions have relied on forecasts of potential future damage. This year, scientists say, the findings are no longer theoretical. Man-made global warming is causing problems here and now.

Because weather was always completely stable prior to the use of fossil fuels. Sheesh.

The report also highlighted global heat waves, an extreme occurence of El Niño and bleaching of coral reefs. These extreme events are all closely tied to climate change, though they remain theoretically possible in a world without the phenomenon.

Nice qualifier: theoretically possible. Now give us funding!

Convenient: FBI Agent’s Anti-Trump Texts Blamed On Illicit Affair From The Usual Unnamed Sources

Many of the texts from FBI official Peter Strzok, often going to Lisa Page and back, were benign. Others, horrendous and worrisome. Texts like

There’s lots of Trump hatred, and hatred for middle Americans, which is just what you want from FBI agents, right? Then this

“So look, you say we can text on that phone when we talk about Hillary because it can’t be traced.”

And

Later in a text from August 15, 2016, Strzok tells Page: “I want to believe the path you threw out for consideration in Andy’s office” – an apparent reference to Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe – “that there’s no way he gets elected – but I’m afraid we can’t take that risk. It’s like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you’re 40 . . . .” Page does not appear to have responded, according to records reviewed by CNN.

And Strzok was the person who edited James Comey’s message which laid out the path where Hillary broke the law, then changed the wording to to “extremely careless” from “grossly negligent.” It’s disturbing that they talked about an insurance policy in a manner than they did, and Democrats would be freaking out had they been aiming that against Hillary. But, hey, ExcuseTime!

FBI officials’ texting about Clinton said to be a cover story for romantic affair

Two senior FBI officials who texted each other about President Trump and Hillary Clinton relied on work phones to try to hide their romance from a spouse and made the bureau’s probe of Clinton’s private email server their cover story for being in such close contact, according to people familiar with the matter.

The two officials, senior FBI lawyer Lisa Page and senior counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok, are the subjects of an internal investigation that has roiled the FBI and emboldened its Republican critics who have accused the bureau of political bias. Had Page and Strzok used personal phones instead, people close to case say, it’s unlikely their text messages would have come to the FBI’s attention. (snip)

People familiar with the matter said that, although Page’s message may appear to suggest that she and Strzok used a separate communications channel for discussing the Clinton case, the point of her text was to advise Strzok how to explain to his wife why the two of them had been texting each other.

Page and Strzok used their work on the Clinton case as a cover story for the affair, these people said, adding that there was not a separate set of phones for untraceable discussions of the Clinton case. The text had nothing to do with the Clinton investigation, these people said.

OK, here’s the thing: name one source. Who, exactly, is saying this? This is yet another case of attempting to change a narrative using unknown sources. How do we trust any of this? Who are these people familiar with the matter? No senior members of the FBI nor DOJ have made this claim. Nor have Page and Strzok (if they did, they would most likely have their employment terminated).

We can add this to Molly Hemingway’s list of the 8 worst defenses.

Kimmel And CNN Compete For Best Crazy On Net Neutrality

There is a ton of crazy out there regarding the ending of the 2 year old net neutrality rules. Twitter is a seething cesspool. Then we have CNN

The actual article is not as bad as the front page splash, with the headline “Trump’s FCC votes to repeal net neutrality”.

And then there’s Jimmy Kimmel, the self professed Not Moral Conscious Of America, being the (mistaken) moral conscious

(Daily Beast) “The Federal Communications Commission did something absolutely despicable today: They voted to put an end to net neutrality,” announced Jimmy Kimmel.

The late-night host dedicated a portion of his Jimmy Kimmel Live!monologue Thursday night to the net neutrality vote, which ruled 3-2 (three Republicans for, two Democrats very much against) in favor of dismantling the regulations.

“Now, as long as they tell us they’re doing it now, internet service providers will be allowed to slow down or block web traffic to any website or streaming service they like—which benefits the big telecom companies, and does the opposite for all of us,” argued Kimmel.

He continued: “They did this even though 83 percent of Americans support net neutrality, and 2 million of the people who supposedly wrote to the FCC to opposite net neutrality were bogus. Many turned out to be dead people; someone stole the identities of dead people to help push this through.”

Despicable! Or something. This was on the same ABC that refused to air a Trump commercial. Kimmel picks his guests, allowing some that “fast lane” while blowing others off.

In six months, this whole thing will have been mostly forgotten, as nothing changes. If a provider attempts something shading, that’s what the Federal Trade Commission is for, rather than one side fits all rules from unelected and unaccoutable bureaucrats.

But, don’t make the mistake of thinking hardcore Progressives (nice Fascists)/Marxists/Statists will give up, because the entire idea here is to empower the federal government to control the Internet.

How is the Internet open when government controls it?
