Zelensky Sees A Lot Of Pushback Over US Funding Of Ukraine War

Remember this poll

(CNN) Overall, 55% say the US Congress should not authorize additional funding to support Ukraine vs. 45% who say Congress should authorize such funding. And 51% say that the US has already done enough to help Ukraine while 48% say it should do more. A poll conducted in the early days of the Russian invasion in late February 2022 found 62% who felt the US should have been doing more.

Within both parties, there are splits by ideology. On providing additional funding, liberal Democrats are far and away the most supportive, 74% back it compared with 51% of moderate or conservative Democrats. Among Republicans, about three-quarters of conservatives oppose new funding (76%) compared with 61% of moderate or liberal Republicans.

Independents mostly say the US has done enough to help Ukraine (56%) and that they oppose additional funding (55%).

But, remember, it’s only “far right Republicans”  who oppose more funding

Zelensky returning to a chillier, more chaotic Congress

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is returning to Washington less than a year after he last visited, seeking to solidify support for his country as chaos on Capitol Hill threatens both the U.S. economy and America’s support for Ukraine.

Standing side by side with President Biden will send a signal of America’s commitment to Kyiv’s fight against Russia’s invasion. But his meetings with lawmakers are likely to highlight the growing skepticism over the cost of ongoing U.S. support for Ukraine in Congress, which ultimately has control over additional military and financial assistance.

Criticism has been the loudest in the House, where a growing group of far-right Republicans want to cut off funding entirely. But even in the Senate, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has said there’s “unanimity” in support for Ukraine, there’s significant fractures on what that support entails.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has earlier put up roadblocks in the Senate on passing funding for Ukraine, delaying for at least a week a $40 billion aid package in May 2022. When the Senate brought the bill to a vote on the floor, Paul led 10 other senators in opposing the measure.

Asked by The Hill on Monday night if he would attend the meeting with Zelensky, Paul quipped, “Is that a welfare hearing? What is that for?”

“I don’t think we should be sending any more money,” he said. “I’m just not for sending them any more money.”

We do not even have accounting for the money we’ve already sent, though, we are sure than a lot went to paying Ukrainian lawmakers and bureaucrats. Biden wants to give Ukraine another $24 billion

“I’ve always been in favor of munitions and military equipment, but I am not in favor of continuing just blank financial support,” said Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a member of Senate GOP leadership and the Armed Services Committee.

The whole thing seems to be a scam meant to bleed the US and EU allies dry. Poland is no longer sending arms as they fight with Ukraine over grain.

‘What’s our objective?’: Biden under pressure over Ukraine aid sales job

Ukraine’s biggest backers in Congress want the Biden administration to more aggressively sell America’s interest in the war, fearful that bipartisan support for aid is faltering.

In recent weeks, senior House Republicans and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have separately told national security adviser Jake Sullivan and other administration officials to step up their efforts in selling lawmakers on additional Ukraine aid or risk losing critical support, according to three people familiar with the messages and granted anonymity to discuss private conversations.

On Wednesday, McConnell blasted Biden’s public messaging on Ukraine as “insufficient” and indicative of “timid leadership” on the matter.

Biden “has an obligation to speak to all Americans. But most of his messaging about lofty and abstract principles seems tailored for Washington think tanks,” McConnell said on the Senate floor, echoing sentiment he made privately to Sullivan and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, according to a senior Republican aide.

Good grief, a sales pitch? That’s the big idea? At this point, no one really knows what the objective really is. Unless it’s to bleed Russia dry as Ukrainians die for a decade or more. Or, is it to start WWIII?

Mr Teach: … no one really knows what the objective really is. Unless it’s to bleed Russia dry as Ukrainians die for a decade or more. Or, is it to start WWIII?

The objective is to stop Russia from attacking Ukraine. Sure, it would be easier for far-right politicians if the world looked the other way and let Putin have Ukraine, but not everything is easy.

Putin’s objective to destroy Ukraine and incorporate it into Russia.

The smartest man on Earth accused President Biden (or was it Obama, whom Donnie said he “beat” in 2016 and 2020) of wanting to start WW2!!

    • James Lewis says:

      Dear Elwood:

      Putin was fearful of Trump.

      Biden is weak.

In case you missed it Russia has been attacking Ukraine and it started that because they knew we would do nothing but jabber and spend money.

      • Professor Hale says:

Of course, it is much more complicated than this. But for Neo-cons, “Putin is Hitler” is easy enough.

The USA State Department has been trying to expand NATO into Ukraine and training the Ukranian army since 2014. They have what they consider are good reasons regarding countering Russia on the world stage, no matter who is running Russia. Russia has announced they will not accept NATO in Ukraine. Meanwhile, The Ukrainian government has been oppressing ethnic Russians in the Eastern parts of Ukraine (with artillery), provoking Russia to step in to protect those people. There is no reason to believe Russia wants all of the soup sandwich that is Ukraine. Putin has offered peace to Ukraine if they just give up oppressing ethnic Russians and refuse NATO membership. The US State Department vetoed Ukraine accepting peace on any terms. Note, these are likely people who would be following these same patterns no matter who was president. But at least under Trump, the policy of long-serving diplomatic corps would have been questioned. Remember, the Generals at DoD and State Department Execs tried to goad Trump into starting a war with Iran, but he didn’t take the bait. Biden doesn’t have the mental acuity or will-power to even question what his nominal subordinates are doing. In case you missed it, Russia has been holding their ground for over a year, not conquering Ukraine.

    • CarolAnn says:

Putin’s objective to destroy Ukraine and incorporate it into Russia.

I don’t know where you get your history perspective from but you don’t know Jack shit. Putin attacked the Ukraine because the United States another allied nations kept trying to induce the Ukraine into NATO. No I don’t know what the Ukraine has to do with a North American treaty organization but it does place nuclear weapons at our disposal on would want nuclear missiles on the Mexican American border so why should we expect Putin to what missiles on the Ukrainian Russian border? Or are you really that stupid?

      Nah you’re really that stupid!

You’re foolish and childish sarcasm notwithstanding if trump said that Biden is trying to start a nuclear war trump is absolutely correct. Ukraine is not an ally of the United States and hasn’t been. The leadership of the Ukraine is half fascist partly Nazi with a splash of homosexual and ignorant peasants. We see why it’s so attractive to you guys on the left. They think like you do fagot Nazis.

I remember when you were against war. But now we all see you’re really against war when it started by a republican. You’re very pro war if it’s a Democrat communist running it and all the money is gone flowing to your team. After all when Republicans fight a war the money goes for the war when you fight a war the money seems to get lost. How much money has been lost so far with your corrupt governments. You have no clue do you? Neither does the United States government.

Over the few years that I’ve been here you have drifted from me honorable but incorrect Liberal Democrat to a dishonorable lying and corrupt Democrat communist period you haven’t even noticed your change in politics but it’s there for all to see. You went from an American to some sort of a Nazi communist hybrid. You’re the worse for the wear. Plus you’ve gotten extremely fat you really gotta look at that fat problem you have. That’s not good for your heart. When was the last time you saw that little pecker of yours?

Anyway The United states needs to get the hell out of the Ukraine Ukraine is Europe’s problem the United states has no business there. The Ukraine has absolutely nothing to do with the security of the United states except that the muffin head in charge could end up getting us into the third World War is that what you want Elwood the third World War? Do you think the third World War would benefit the Democrat Communist Party here? So that means it’s worth doing even if it kills 100 million people because that’s what communists and Democrats have always done kill people.

You have truly turned into a self interested hateful corrupt slob.

        CarolAnn,

Should the Republicans assassinate President Zelenskyy or at least detain him?

Putin has spread the lie that Ukraine is a Nazi regime. Sigh. And you believe it.

And of course Ukraine wants to be a member of NATO. If they were, Putin would have been stymied.

CarolAnn typed: why should we expect Putin to what (sic, want?) missiles on the Ukrainian Russian border? Or are you really that stupid?

Ukraine has no nukes. NATO members Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia all border Russia and have no US nukes. NO NATO nation bordering Russia has US nukes. Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey are the only NATO nations with US tactical nukes.

Russia’s “satellite” Belarus DOES have Russian tactical nukes and borders Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.

So who’s stupid now? Please do not trust Putin or Trump. They are both liars.

CarolAnn typed: The leadership of Ukraine is half fascist partly Nazi with a splash of homosexual and ignorant peasants. We see why it’s so attractive to you guys on the left. They think like you do fagot Nazis.

Latest information is that with the aid we have provided Ukraine, they are losing and have not made a dent in the Russian lines. Good neutral source is Institute for the Study of War. Need to get out before we get into more trouble with our fearless leader.

    • Professor Hale says:

“… have not made a dent in Russian lines”

Totally not true. The Ukrainian Army has made several dents in the lines. They did it at the cost of 70k of their men and a few thousand vehicles in just the past month. But it is an unmistakable dent. If only they had another 70K fit young men, they could make another dent just like it. At this rate, Russian ammunition factories may need to put on a second shift.

Recently, Ukraine has passed laws preventing “men” 14 and older from leaving the country, lowering the medical standard for admission to the military, and demanding that Europe and America return any young men hiding out in foreign lands. Not the sort of things a country that is winning does.

The US is providing Ukraine with cluster munitions and Depleted Uranium tank rounds. Cluster munitions are supposedly so bad that NATO countries signed a treaty during the Obama administration to never ever use them. Ever. The US SECDEF issued a policy statement saying that even though the USA didn’t ratify that treaty, we would dispose of our own cluster munitions as if we did. And DP munitions permanently poison teh soil where they are used. Not the sort of weapons any nation uses on its own land where they expect their own children to play and their own farmers to grow food.

Zelinsky knows he is losing. He just wants to fatten up the retirement funds for himself and a few thousand of his closest friends before he flees. Typically corrupt Ukraine. It seems everyone who goes there wants to grab a piece for himself off the top.

Good grief, a sales pitch? That’s the big idea? At this point, no one really knows what the objective really is. Unless it’s to bleed Russia dry as Ukrainians die for a decade or more. Or, is it to start WWIII?

You have assumed that there is a real objective, but there’s no evidence that such a thing exists.

I’ve seen so many people giving us the World War II thinking that if we had stopped Adolf Hitler over Czechoslovakia, in Munich, the war in Europe would have been avoided. The United Kingdom and France did decide that Czechoslovakia was enough, and gave an unconditional guarantee to Poland, but when the Wehrmacht rolled in, though the UK and France declared war on the Third Reich on September 3rd, there was nothing they could actually do. Poland was liberated by the Red Army when the Soviets finally rolled through.

But it’s not 1939 now, and we actually do have weapons which could strike the Russians from where we are now, but, of course, they have weapons which could strike us from where they are now . . . and those weapons are tipped with nuclear warheads.

So, what are we doing/ We’ve sent scads of military equipment to Ukraine, and the Ukes seem to be holding their own, but that’s about it. We’ve been unwilling to send them certain weapons, because we’ve been at least smart enough not to want to drag ourselves into a direct war with Russia. That’s not a plan for victory, but only for an extended war of attrition.

    • L.G.Brandon!, L.G.Brandon! says:

That’s not a plan for victory, but only for an extended war of attrition.

If they’re not too busy trying to indict him on 500 different charges that obviously only popped up after 2 1/2 years during an election year maybe they could ask President Trump to sit down with Zelensky and Putin and negotiate a peace.

The current leadership in our country has been proven to be a bunch of freaking morons who are incapable of producing anything of value or worth. However President Trump has proved himself an able and capable negotiator in the past. Instead of allowing the Democrat communists to be so partisan that they drag us into a third World War and have our country destroyed maybe it’s time to force them to step aside and let the professional negotiators take over.

The withered up old sack of shit old man in the White House couldn’t negotiate himself into a bathroom stall let alone negotiate with the big boys like Putin. This is what happens when you allow a bunch of communists to steal an election. All the Democrat communists care about is their own power their own Grift and their own wealth.

We cannot let people who hate America run America. We cannot let people who hate us, the the American people make laws and regulate us, the American people. We cannot allow would be dictators to run our cities and our states close our businesses tell us what medicines we can use what cars we can drive and what energy we can produce. We cannot run a country like this especially when they have proved themselves to be anti American by leaving open the border to allow every piece of garbage from the rest of the world to come into our country and destroy it.

Every place the Democrat communist go we see a constant decrease in quality and standards. Hell, they can’t even keep the Senate dressed appropriately.

Ukrainians have been and still are losing this war the only way they cannot lose this war is for us to go to war with Russia. We have shipped probably in the area of $150 billion into the Ukraine very little of which is accountable. Plenty of witch is in Biden numbered accounts throughout the world as well as the numbered accounts of other Democrat operatives. It’s part of their grift. Zelensky’s probably got 25 billion somewhere. The only people who are losing are the American people financially and the Ukrainian people and the Russian people by having their men dying in the battlefields that the supposedly compassionate and loving leftists in America keep going and keep financing.

All Russia wants is the assurance that the Ukraine will not be joining NATO. I don’t think that’s hard. I’m sure that that’s something well within President Trump’s purview of negotiation. Obviously it escapes the current moron in the White House and his childlike followers.

      • Professor Hale says:

LGB–I’m sure that that’s something well within President Trump’s purview of negotiation.

The problem with that is that Russia no longer sees any American government as a good faith negotiator. Russia would know that the Biden/Obama/Blinken government is just using negotiation to extend the conflict. In fact, any country that is paying attention would reach the same conclusion. Even if the next Trump administration were totally trustworthy, a dubious position considering how many people in the last Trump administration bragged about how they undermined Trump foreign policy all over the world, the nations of the world know with certainty that any deal Trump makes is only good until the next Democrat or Neo-Con Republican gets elected.

Under such conditions, there is no reason for any nation on earth to trust America as a negotiator.

I would suggest using Brazil, India, Turkey or even Japan as the negotiator.

hell, who knows what the left is thinking other than they must defend their power even if it means killing millions to do so, while they enrich the deep state run by the MIC, Big PHARMA and Silicon Valley.

The powers that be run the deep state. The deep state owns politicians and the little guy both Dem and Repub are powerless to stop any of this lunacy. • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Commenter typed: Dowd claims there are no Nazis in Ukraine.

If I claimed there were “No Nazis in Ukraine”, I apologize. No doubt there are some in Ukraine who identify as Nazis. Please point out where I stated there were no Nazis in Ukraine. Thanks. I did type: Putin has spread the lie that Ukraine is a Nazi regime.

President Zelenskyy is Jewish and is an unlikely Nazi. There is little or no evidence that Nazis are influencing the Ukraine state.

So yes, Putin talks of Russian fears of Nazis and US tactical nukes in Ukraine and Ukraine’s genocide of Ukrainian Russians and demands that Ukraine not join NATO. None of these excuses pass the smell test.

“Neo-Nazi, far-right and xenophobic groups do exist in Ukraine, like in pretty much any other country, including Russia,” Professor Eugene Finkel said. “They are vocal and can be prone to violence but they are numerically small, marginal and their political influence at the state level is non-existent. That is not to say that Ukraine doesn’t have a far-right problem. It does. But I would consider the KKK in the United States and skinheads and neo-Nazi groups in Russia a much bigger problem and threat than the Ukrainian far-right.”

Curiously, the commenter typed: the left including DOWD is jacking off to killing 100’s of thousands if not a million plus women, children, and Russians in the name of?

It’s strange that MAGAts feel that sovereign nations have no right to defend themselves against authoritarian invasions. The commenter would do well to recall that it was Russia that started bombing Ukraine, killing children, women and men. Does the commenter feel that the Ukrainians should just accept becoming part of Russia?

If China attacked the US should we acquiesce to save lives? If the far-right authoritarian movement in the US becomes so upset that they finally take up arms against the Deep State and commie/lib/dem/fascists should we all surrender?

  13. CarolAnn says:

It’s strange that MAGAts feel that sovereign nations have no right to defend themselves against authoritarian invasions.

Other than yourself who states that? What we and most people believe is that Russia has a right to defend itself against a NATO incursion on their borders. It was NATO that promoted the Russian attack on the Ukraine by overthrowing the elected government installing the
corrupt puppet homosexual Nazi Zelinsky and constantly threatening to have Ukraine join NATO.

I have stated before and I will state again if you ask Putin for peace you will get peace. All he wants is the assurance that Ukraine will not join NATO. Try it see if it works.

You really need to stop being a brainwashed mouthpiece for leftist in America. You need to start thinking for yourself. Should start doing the same thing about elections.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Ukraine was not a threat to Russia, although it may be now. Good job, pootie.

Presidential elections were held in Ukraine on 31 March 2019. As none of the 39 candidates on the ballot received an absolute majority of the initial vote, a runoff was held on 21 April between the top two vote-getters, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a television personality, and the (billionaire) incumbent president, Petro Poroshenko. According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), Zelenskyy won the second round with 73.22% of the votes. The election was recognized as free and fair.

Of course, MAGAts claim any election they lose as being unfair and corrupt.

Ukraine has a long history of corruption and Ukrainians elected Zelenskyy to start the cleanup. To his credit, the right-wing President Poroshenko had reduced corruption during his tenure. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of Ukraine joining NATO (Russia opposed Poroshenko and worked for his defeat!). Unfortunately, Poroshenko had made little progress quelling the fighting in Donbas and other reasons.

Commenter: All (Putin) wants is the assurance that Ukraine will not join NATO.

That’s just not true. Responsible nations do not go to war over trivial reasons (although President Reagan tested that “rule”). Several NATO nations border Russia and not one has US nukes.

Should the US military invade Mexico

Putin expected to march into Kyiv within days, depose Zelenskyy, either exile or kill him, and install a Russian puppet gov’t. Putin has never accepted that Ukraine was a sovereign nation, citing Ukrainians as Russian. In addition, Putin wanted a land bridge to Crimea. The war will end the day after Putin is expelled or dies.

Our advice to you: You really need to stop being a brainwashed mouthpiece for MAGAts/Putin/tRump in America. You need to start thinking for yourself. Should start doing the same thing about elections.
