COP27: Without Greta, activists make waves at climate summit

Young people are a more powerful force than ever in the UN climate summit, the UN’s youngest climate advisor tells BBC News in Egypt.

“Young people are definitely shaping outcomes here at COP27,” Sophia Kianni says.

Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg has skipped the Sharm el-Sheikh meeting, calling it a forum for “greenwashing”.

But young people from countries at high risk from climate change say they are “calling it out” from inside.

In an address on Tuesday, climate activist Vanessa Nakate from Uganda will tell governments to wash their “oil-stained” hands.

Speaking to G20 nations, she will tell ministers that they must end the “moral and economic madness” of funding fossil fuels and prioritising short-term politics.

Does no one in the media see the irony of Ms. Nakate, along with all the others, taking fossil fueled trips to complain about the use of fossil fuels? Did it even cross the minds of the reporters? Or, are they just altogether bought in on the climate cult?

Ayisha Siddiqa, 23, travelled from Pakistan to speak at the Youth Pavilion. It’s the first time young people have had a dedicated space like this, where last week activists held a formal meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

It’s one of the most buzzing areas of COP27, with activists jostling to find space to sit and chat on the floor, and Ayisha tells me she’s proud of the space.

“This is for the youth, organized by us. Unlike government and business areas, there’s no corporate branding everywhere,” she says.

So what are their degrees in? Anything? How about their business experience? Do they have a clue as to the way the world works?

Imran and his colleague Sohanur Rahmen explain they got grants for travel and hotels, but they cannot afford to eat at the conference.

Delegates faced costs of about $4,000 a week for accommodation, as well as the costs of travel and visas.

Activists say future climate summits must include special funds and accommodation for young people from civil society.

LOL, how cute. Someone else needs to pay for their climate cult activism.

The media is making a big deal of her. She took a fossil fueled trip all the way from Stanford. Who payed? It’s more fun scrolling through her twitter feed, seeing just how many clothes she brought, and how many times she changed them in just a few days. Like so many other of the youths, they’re turning it into an Instagram/TikTok event. Gotta get those selfies and videos, eh?

Interesting that the movement has moved on, but the “journalist” still thinks the story is about Greta.

  2. Professor Hale says:

Something wrong with her eyes. Alignment seems off.

Her eyes are just reflecting the emptiness of her brain. I see it all the time when I visit Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.

Translation: “Those with no life experience want to tell everyone else how to live”.

Why the bloody f&^% should we listen to these twits? They know nothing.

  4. H says:

Teach don’t ALL or almost all International flights now have a 2% surcharge as a carbon offset? I do know that the USA has been doing so for at least 2 years. If so,wouldn’t that make them carbon neutral?
Young people!! Don’t cha just hate them!!
35 years younger than Teach and without a lick of sense that Teach had back when he was a surfer.

    • Professor Hale says:

You keep saying that. You must not take flights. Increased fees by airlines trying desperately to increase their margins are nothing new. No matter what they call the fee, nothing is being “offset”. The same amount of carbon still comes out of the thrust nozzle.

  5. Jl says:

Johnny the carbon offset boy-like I said, you had us worried with no “offset” remarks in several days, but you came through. Have the you figured out yet why paying a tax offsets anything when in reality these planes emit exactly the same as if no “offset” was paid? Doesn’t the cult tell you these things?

    • Professor hale says:

The offset is a funding mechanism for climate activists and Al Gore, who owns an interest in the carbon exchange. It’s all about the wealth transfer, not teh climate. If the climate were really the issue, all these people would be on China’s back to clean their act up.

We see where pedo joe and Son of Castro got their brand new Mao style commie outfits for ASEAN in Cambodia. American commies emulating their mass murdering heroes.

You can hear the dems in their own voices state they are “stealing the election” yet dowd will deny it. Talk about your brainwashing.

  8. Matthew says:

Dear Greta, Sophia, and every other person, young or old, living in utter anxiety over global warming,

Absolutely nobody is preventing you from taking any and all actions you see fit to cool the planet. It’s not going to cool anything, but I really hope you feel better.

Please feel free to recycle everything right down to your dead skin cells for all I care, avoid every possible use of fossil fuel, use your purchasing power as a consumer to support and promote products and companies you believe in, talk everyone you can into doing the same. Please, please, PLEASE, have at it!

Demand that .gov take more of my money to usurp more of my decisions so the rest of us are forced to live the way you think we should? All of that will likewise have zero cooling effect and take our attention away from doing the actual work of the world to which you and your ilk contribute absolutely nothing? Nope.

Where does that process end? Taken to the logical extreme it leads directly to tyranny and eventually to everything falling apart, then we’re all dead. So, Hell No!

    • Professor Hale says:

Anxiety over Global warming is a rich white kids problem. All those people in Asia and Africa couldn’t care less about it. They have more important things to worry about: food and water being high on the list.

    • david7134 says:

Jeff has been here many years and his obsession is with climate change, although he was originally on global warming. He calls himself keeping up with the current knowledge and the one and only solution to the issue is carbon tax and global tyrannical government. Both solutions would do very little to with resolving the problem, much like the COVID jab. So that says all you need to know, if taxes and harsh government are the only answer, then the problem does not exist. And, if this is a real problem, then who cares?

  9. James Lewis says:

    Dear H:
    “Teach don’t ALL or almost all International flights now have a 2% surcharge as a carbon offset{

    You are wrong.

“The BBC contacted the world’s biggest airlines in terms of numbers of flights and numbers of passengers.

Out of the 28 approached, less than half offered a carbon offset scheme and the majority declined to provide data on the number of passengers offsetting their flights during a one year period – often saying their figures were too low to report.”
