Democrats clash over Manchin side deal, raising shutdown risk
Liberal lawmakers are pressing Democratic leaders in the House to not include a side deal undercutting environmental reviews worked out with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) in a short-term measure funding the government.
House Natural Resources Chairman Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) is circulating a letter asking leadership to separate the Manchin deal out from a continuing resolution that would temporarily avert a government shutdown.
“Don’t attach it to a budget, to a CR, must-pass legislation and therefore take this essential Republican agenda and have Democrats pass it,” he told The Hill earlier this month.
The issue is expected to come to a head in September, when lawmakers return from recess, as Democrats try to secure funding for the government and prevent a shutdown.

The deal was part of the agreement Manchin made with Democratic leaders as they won his support for their now-passed climate, tax and health care bill.
Under the deal with Manchin, worked out by President Biden, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the trio agreed “to pass comprehensive permitting reform legislation before the end of this fiscal year,” which ends on October 1. The provisions are designed to expedite energy and infrastructure projects subject to environmental reviews.
That sets up a potential shutdown crisis if progressives block a funding bill over the inclusion of the permitting reform language and Democrats can’t find the votes elsewhere.
I don’t think it will just be Progressives blocking due to inclusion of the deal. House leadership may simply pull it early.
Grijalva acknowledged that it would likely be difficult for many members to vote against funding the government.
“This is not trying to torpedo anything. This is saying the [continuing resolution] and the budget is critical, yes, but let’s do this other one where everybody is accountable,” he said.
Yes, it will torpedo it. Because if they move it to a separate vote, it won’t get one. Will Republicans be willing to have a “clean” vote on it if they retake the House and Senate? Doubtful. They may have a vote on it, as they would support it, with a bill that kills off parts of the IRA, such as the IRS funding.
Democratic leaders would face a difficult choice between passing a clean continuing resolution and potentially angering Manchin; convincing their own members to shed their environmental concerns and back the Manchin side deal; or leaning on GOP votes to prevent a shutdown.
Do they care about angering Manchin? No.

“Terming the laptop ‘disinformation’ by the FBI, Intelligence Community, Congress, and the Biden campaign, along with Big Tech, impacted voters,” TIPP President Raghavan Mayur said. “A significant majority — 78% — believe that access to the correct information could have been critical to their decision at the polls.”
President Joe Biden spread the disinformation narrative during the one and only debate he would do with Trump, and he had shared a letter from a 51 intelligence officials aligned with him, saying the laptop story was a Russian disinformation campaign, echoing the 2016 allegations of Russian meddling in the presidential election.
And, this week, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told “The Joe Rogan Experience” that his Meta platforms throttled down the reach of the laptop story after getting a visit and a warning from the FBI about Russian disinformation.
“The names have changed, but the allegations are the same, that these FBI agents were attempting to influence the outcome of the 2020 election by suppressing derogatory information about Hunter Biden and potentially Joe Biden,” former National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe said this week.
“It is the FBI that is the primary domestic authority for investigating and leading to the prosecution of election influence and election interference. It’s really a problem when the agency that is responsible for investigating those things is engaged in those things.”
The TIPP poll found 74% believe the FBI and Intelligence Community deliberately misled the public on suggesting the laptop was a Russian effort to hurt Biden’s candidacy.

Not exactly. Although the poll sample was 1335 individuals, the question was asked of only the 437 of them who had answered that they “closely followed the laptop story”. Of those 437, only 24% or 104 identified as Democrats. 76% were not Democrats. So, wow, Republicans think knowing the Hunter Biden story would have elected DonJon. We can safely conclude that 100% of Republican voters believe that DonJon was cheated!! LOL It’s hardly surprising that wingers are pimping this “poll”.

On a parallel, just finished a BrietBart article on energy prices in Germany and France, electricity up 1000%(!!!). For a comparison, I calculated my July bill at their rates, around 3,000 euro or a little over ten times what I pay now. Germany is trying to get some Coal Plants back on line. We need to observe this, tell the greenies and lefties to sod off and get our domestic energy production back in shape while there is still a chance to do it. If we don’t dig coal and drill for oil and gas, we will not have enough energy. We were energy independent 2 years ago.
