Walmart Inc could face an uphill battle to reclaim U.S. shoppers who opted for the neighborhood dollar store or Aldi rather than driving farther to a Walmart Supercenter when gasoline was $5 a gallon.
While gasoline prices have dropped nearly 20% over the past month, there are no signs shoppers are returning to the nation’s biggest retailer, according to foot traffic data reviewed by Reuters and analysts.
Inflation remains at a 40-year high, devouring a large chunk of the grocery budgets of many Americans, especially Walmart’s legions of cost-conscious shoppers.
Foot traffic at Walmart’s 3,573 U.S. Supercenters and its 370 discount stores (as of Jan. 31, 2022) fell 2.7% on average from June 1 through July 25 versus a year earlier, according to data from Placer.ai, a location analytics firm.
Meanwhile, traffic rose 11.5% at Aldi, owned by German discount grocer Aldi Süd, and the number of shopper visits climbed 4.1% at Dollar General.
Interesting. Aldi isn’t necessarily less expensive than Walmart for many things, and, certainly aren’t as many nationwide. That more Americans are shopping at Dollar General should be very concerning to the government, but, really, people like Biden couldn’t care less about you peasants

One Target I know has a pretty good grocery experience, the one in Knightdale is hot garbage. Their produce is terrible. Regardless, Bidenflation is causing lots of problems, especially for food. He’s doing such a great job.
We avoid WalMart as much as we can. It’s not just that their grocery store layout is horrible, but that my darling bride — of 43 years, 2 months, and 25 days — hates that WalMart looks at each customer as a potential thief, having to show your register receipt as you exit the store.
As a grocery store, Kroger is pretty good, but Elaine claims that Meijer’s is less expensive.
We have a new WalMart a few miles away and avoid it as well, although they had the Weinermobile at the grand opening.
My daughter-in-law refuses to show them her receipt, saying that she owns the articles now and “keep your hands off my stuff”. She’s one of my heroes!

At the old Desloge MO WalMart (now a SuperCenter!) the charcoal briquets and lighter fluid were at opposite ends of the store. I am still nursing the grudge.

1. Maybe there are fewer trips to walmart because people are consolidating trips and shopping more lically to save gas.
2. Maybe people need fewer trips to the store because they have less money and less buying power in the Biden economy.

We do make the occasional visit to Wally World. Grocery stores and big box department stores generally reflect the neighborhood(s) and clientele where they are located. Makes for some interesting ‘socio economic’ research if one is so inclined or just observing. There are 3 Walmarts within our local travel area, the nice one is also the closest and the least ‘nice’ is only 10 minutes away. The difference is amazing, locked display cabinets, surly staff, guard at the door, etc. at the least nice store and none of that at the one where we trade.
We don’t buy much in the way of foodstuffs from Walmart, however, we have noticed that the prices are rising quicker than at the HEB across the street where we purchase most of our food. Could have something to do with Walmart’s pricing structure, remember, everything at Wally’s is ultimately controlled from Bentonville.
I’ve been shopping Aldi for years now. Good prices, and the smaller size of the store is great for my aging knees. Granted, their selection is not as good as Kroger or WalMart, but I get what I need most of the time. The current shortages have been a problem though. Luckily, my local Aldi is right next door to a new Kroger, built into the corpse of a dead K-Mart.
