Good Grief: New York To Be Swamped By 2.77mm Of Sea Rise A Year

On Sunday’s I usually like to wait till the afternoon to post another article, what with the Patriotic Pinup post. However, I ran across a really silly doom and gloom Warmist article over at Tom Nelson’s spot, which is truly idiotic and scaremongering, pushed by the AFP

New York at risk from rising sea levels

The sea level on a stretch of the US Atlantic coast that features the cities of New York, Norfolk and Boston is rising up to four times faster than the global average, a report said on Sunday.

This increases the flood risk for one of the world’s most densely-populated coastal areas and threatens wetland habitats, said a study reported in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Since about 1990, the sea level along the 1,000-kilometre “hotspot” zone has risen by two to 3.7 millimetres per year.

The global rise over the same period was between 0.6 and one millimetre per year, said the study by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

If global temperatures continue to rise, the sea level on this portion of the coast by 2100 could rise up to 30 centimetres over and above the one-metre global surge projected by scientists, it added.

Everybody panic!!!!!!1!!!!!! Oh, wait, science occurs elsewhere via actual data, rather than hysterical ranting and prognostication (click the “read more”)

You can see the bigger size image at the link, which includes the following text

The mean sea level trend is 2.77 millimeters/year with a 95% confidence interval of +/- 0.09 mm/yr based on monthly mean sea level data from 1856 to 2006 which is equivalent to a change of 0.91 feet in 100 years.

2.77mm a year as an average. How big is that? (image from here)

That little fuel cell is 3mm. Are you freaking out about sea rise now? For reference, your hair can grow anywhere from 6-10 centimeters a year. That’s 60-100 millimeters. Perspective.

And the rise is well within the norms for a warm period. Average rise over the last 7,000 years is 6-8 inches, which includes when it slows, stops, or goes down during the cool periods. What that graph shows in no acceleration of sea rise at The Battery, despite changing the method of obtaining data from gauges to satellites.

What the graph further shows is that the “two to 3.7 millimetres per year” being positioned as out of the norm is anything but abnormal, going all the way back the late 1850’s. Looking at the NOAA data for the US, you can find negligible up to 6+mm a year. Why? Shouldn’t sea rise be pretty much the same? Unless there is …… some other force at play.

Kings Point shows 2.35mm a year. Montauk shows 2.78mm a year. Much of the area from NJ up through Connecticut and Rhode Island show slightly more to slightly less. Your thoughts, Captain?

  1. Fritz says:

Down here in Slower Maryland, the rate of sea level rise is closer to 4 mm a year (you can find the same sort of data at the same NOAA site). Several factors contribute to the extra. One is the land is sinking (a response to land to the North rebounding from the weight of the glacier. Another is water withdrawal. Most of our water is ground water, and when you take it out, the land sinks a little (like a sponge drying up).

The fact struck home a little recently when the dock for my boat is to be rebuilt 11 inches higher. I was made in about 1980 and at 4 mm a year, it has effectively fallen about 6 inches. By building up 11 inches, in another 30 years, the dock will be at the original height.

Curiously, as sea level in New York has risen, Manhattan Island has actually grown. I wonder how that happened?

  2. Well, you know, it can only be because of Mankind driving fossil fueled vehicles. Warmists tell us so! And they’re so worried about it that they drive all around the world with Stop Global Warming now bumper stickers on their cars!

Guido in NY City: “Yeah, I’ve GOT your 2.7mm rawtcheeah, buddy. Wait that’s a lot, right?”

  4. Gumball_Brains says:

    That was funny jglanton.

You know, people once wondered why Texas was sinking. They then realized it was all the oil being pumped out.

People once wondered why much of S. Louisiana was sinking. They then realized that it was because of the elimination of silting and the removal of freshwater from the water-tables.

Each time someone cries wolf, real scientists come to the rescue. Thanks Teach for still being that real climatolozoolocosmological scientist that we have all come to rely upon.

BTW, you stink at movie reviews. Prometheus stunk.

  5. What!!!? Well, to each his own. I though it was really good. But, I’ve had people tell me John Carter was great (despite them only seeing it on DVD). I thought it was kinda lame.

  6. Trish says:

Does this mean that soon we can take a ferry to New England, and avoid those nasty tunnels and bridges through NYC??? Cool. I will definitely let my brother-in-law know it’s time to sell the brownstone…

  7. Gumball_Brains says:

Well Trish, it only depends on where your BIL lives. Only certain areas in ocean-flooding areas will not flood. And certain non-ocean-rising areas will see ocean rising. So, while your BIL may find his brownstone being deluged with 2 feet of rising ocean levels, his neighbor around the corner may not. Or vice-versa.

Teach, that was because John Carter was a movie of a scifi classic. Prometheus was supposed to fit into a set realm of knowledge. Just messin with ya Teach.

Let me say this though, as examples of how I felt about the script: 1) They have a geologist-for-hire who specializes in mapping underground structures and pathways. The writers actually have him get lost in a structure he is mapping? 2) The supposed alien master race that we are in search of actually commits suicide each time they “seed” a planet?
