Somehow, I doubt this will make the Democrats health bills more popular, but it would allow Democrats to take over even more of the economy. Remind me, isn’t the notion that having the government control parts of the economy directly known as “socialism?”

Senate Democratic leaders have decided to pair an overhaul of federal student lending with healthcare reform, according to a Democratic official familiar with negotiations.

“It’s going in,” said the Democratic source, in reference to the student lending measure.

Obviously, this might not sit too well with many in Congress, including more rational Democrats. But, hell, full speed ahead towards the rocks!

But the student loan industry estimates that nearly 35,000 jobs would be lost if the federal government lent directly to students and only let private companies service the loans. (snip)

Republicans say they would staunchly oppose any plan for the federal government to replace private banks as direct student lenders.

Yes, that would be socialism. And they want to pair student lending and healthcare “reform” as one reconciliation bill. Delusional.
