Surprise! Mafia Heavily Involved With “Green” Energy In Italy

Would anyone be surprised if this was happening all over, at least in terms of organized criminal syndicates?

(Washington Post)  Inside a midnight-blue BMW, a Sicilian entrepreneur delivered his pitch to the accused mafia boss. A new business was blowing into Italy that could spin wind and sunlight into gold, ensuring the future of the Earth as well as the Cosa Nostra: renewable energy.

“Uncle Vincenzo,” implored the businessman, Angelo Salvatore, using a term of affection for the alleged head of Sicily’s Gimbellina crime family, 79-year-old Vincenzo Funari. According to a transcript of their wiretapped conversation, Salvatore continued, “for the love of our sons, renewable energy is important. . . . it’s a business we can live on.”

And for quite awhile, Italian prosecutors say, they did. In an unfolding plot that is part “The Sopranos,” part “An Inconvenient Truth,” authorities swept across Sicily last month in the latest wave of sting operations revealing years of deep infiltration into the renewable energy sector by Italy’s rapidly modernizing crime families.

Shockingly, much of this revolves around the massive taxpayer funded subsidies readily available and ripe for fraud. And a good way for organized crime to launder their money, BTW.

American Optimism Lowest Since 1979

Surprise!

(CBS DC) Fewer than four-in-10 Americans (39 percent) rate the US in a positive manner – the most negative feedback the country has produced since 1979.

A new Gallup poll finds that Americans are as negative about the country’s prospects as they have been in more than three decades. Americans are more upbeat in their predictions of where the U.S. will be in five years (48 percent positive), but this is the lowest rating since an August 1979 Gallup poll was conducted.

The negativity about the current state of the US has a politically partisan split – Republicans stated that the country’s best days have already passed and Democrats say the best days have not happened yet. Seventy-five percent of Democrats gave positive reviews of how the nation will be five years from now, but only 15 percent of Republicans were positive – a 60 percent partisan gap.

Independents break 48% for 5 years from now, and 39% now.

Democrats are apparently enthused that 5 years from now they’ll still be unemployed and living off the government teet, as the economy stagnates much like Europe and America’s debt is in the $20 trillion range.

Prepare For The ObamaCare Sticker Shock

We haven’t discussed the idiocy of ObamaCare lately, legislation which the majority of Americans still despise. But, it’s still out there and ready to cause havoc

(Forbes) A California insurance broker, who sells health plans to individuals and small businesses, told me that she’s prepping her clients for a sticker shock. Her local carriers are hinting to her that premiums may triple this fall, when the plans unveil how they’ll billet the full brunt of Obamacare’s new regulations and mandates.

California is hardly alone. Around the country, insurers are fixing to raise rates by double digits. They’re privately briefing politicians in Washington on what’s in store. Those briefings are leaving a lot of folks up and down Pennsylvania Avenue jumpy.

What’s gives? President Obama, after all, said he’d prevent these sorts of prices. His new health law gave state regulators the power to block premium increases. It even created a federal agency to oversee insurance rates. But these bureaucrats are spectators to the price hikes. They’re mere wallflowers. Even in the bluest of states.

Their silence is the best evidence of who is culpable for the increases. It’s the policymakers. It’s Obamacare. The President is accepting the premium hikes as an allowable consequence of his healthcare policies.

Seriously, who would have thought that a 2,700 page Bill which has create well over 13,000 pages of rules and regulations from the Central Planning Office (remember, it took 18 pages to define “full time” and the IRS released 159 pages to cover the tax rules) would cause costs to skyrocket? And we haven’t even really seen the writings from the States yet. So, what is the Obama admin to do about this?

Well, he can go after the insurance companies, forcing them to eat the costs, which will put the companies out of business. Which seems to be a part of what the legislation attempts to do. He can regulate the costs doctors and hospitals charge, which will reduce service. We’ll see rationing along with medical professionals and health care providers shutting down. Welcome to ObamaCare.

We’re Saved! Wake School Board Considers Putting Unarmed Guards In Schools

Will the job include training in yelling “oh, shit” and “run away!”, along with how to dial 911?

(WRAL) The Wake County Board of Education is expected to vote Tuesday on a proposal to put one unarmed security guard at each of the district’s 105 elementary schools.

If approved, the measure would cost $835,000 for three months or nearly $2.4 million for a year for a contract with AlliedBarton Security Services. The company already provides security for some of the schools in the district.

Look, I’m not disparaging the folks who work for AlliedBarton, it just seems silly to pony up $2.4 million for security that won’t be able to stop an armed maniac.

“We’re trying to take some proactive steps to keep our schools safe,” he said. “There aren’t any threats being posed, but we have some issues around access with some of our elementary schools. They are not covered in the same way as our middle and high schools.”

Sounds more like the Democrat majority on the Board are trying to show that they are “Doing Something.” The vote is at 330pm today.

Warmist Worries About Coral Which Apparently Thrives In Cold Water

We’re all doomed if temps rise a simple 2 degrees Celsius, says Thomas Lovejoy, who’s apparently never read anything about coral

(NY Times) It is abundantly clear that the target of a 2-degree Celsius limit to climate change was mostly derived from what seemed convenient and doable without any reference to what it really means environmentally. Two degrees is actually too much for ecosystems. Tropical coral reefs are extremely vulnerable to even brief periods of warming. The elevated atmospheric CO2 also has raised the acidity of the oceans, which affects the ability of coral and mollusks such as oysters to build shells and skeletons. A 2-degree world will be one without coral reefs (on which millions of human beings depend for their well-being).

The acidity alarmist has been debunked. And corals and mollusks thrive in warm water, particularly the coral. They are a warm water species which evolved when the Earth and the oceans were much, much warmer. How do these Warmists think many coral based islands were formed? The sea levels where much higher and the water much warmer…why do I bother? These climate astrologers are bat shit insane with no knowledge of science nor history.

At current global warming of 0.8-0.9 degrees, the fingerprints of climate change can be seen virtually everywhere in nature. The coniferous forests of western North America are currently experiencing massive tree mortality because climate change has tipped the balance in favor of native bark beetles. The Amazon seems to be edging close to dieback in the southern and southeastern portions of the great forest.

The bark beetles have been debunked, as well. And nature changes. It did during all the previous cool and warm periods during this inter-glacial. I wonder how the forests did during the last ice age? And the hot periods beforehand? This is alarmism for alarmism sake, with no mention that perhaps Warmists should practice what they preach.

Unsurprisingly, the Times refused to allow comments on the op-ed, probably because Warmists get beaten like rented mules when comments are allowed.

Strange: Most Gun Violence Occurs In Liberal Hotbeds

Starting off with a letter to the editor of the Washington Post, providing an uncomfortable truth

The fact that President Obama’s second inauguration was held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day is ripe with symbolism. But our nation’s first black president has done too little to champion the social equality at the core of King’s message. We remain a wealthy nation marred by poverty and violence, which disproportionately affect the black community. Mr. Obama’s recent gun proposals, hailed by many as a bold move, once again skirt the real problems we face. The president was galvanized into action by a massacre in a white, middle-class, suburban community. In reality, more than half of gun homicide victims in 2010 were black, while blacks compose just 13 percent of our population. Four U.S. cities rank among the top 50 worldwide in murder rates.

And just how bad are the big cities, which tend to be liberal? Here’s the Atlantic, with a spiffy map that compares the rate of gun murders to foreign countries and finds

  • If it were a country, New Orleans (with a rate 62.1 gun murders per 100,000 people) would rank second in the world.
  • Detroit’s gun homicide rate (35.9) is just a bit less than El Salvador (39.9).
  • Baltimore’s rate (29.7) is not too far off that of Guatemala (34.8).
  • Gun murder in Newark (25.4) and Miami (23.7) is comparable to Colombia (27.1).
  • Washington D.C. (19) has a higher rate of gun homicide than Brazil (18.1).
  • Atlanta’s rate (17.2) is about the same as South Africa (17).
  • Cleveland (17.4) has a higher rate than the Dominican Republic (16.3).
  • Gun murder in Buffalo (16.5) is similar to Panama (16.2).
  • Houston’s rate (12.9) is slightly higher than Ecuador’s (12.7).
  • Gun homicide in Chicago (11.6) is similar to Guyana (11.5).
  • Phoenix’s rate (10.6) is slightly higher than Mexico (10).
  • Los Angeles (9.2) is comparable to the Philippines (8.9).
  • Boston rate (6.2) is higher than Nicaragua (5.9).
  • New York, where gun murders have declined to just four per 100,000, is still higher than Argentina (3).
  • Even the cities with the lowest homicide rates by American standards, like San Jose and Austin, compare to Albania and Cambodia respectively.

Strange. All those places tend to be hives of Progressive ideals. Even big cities like Houston and Phoenix tend to lean left. Perhaps we should simply restrict those who vote Democrat from owning guns. Oh, wait, in most of those areas they are restricted, along with everyone else. Except criminals.

Obama Goes Climate Astrologist During Coronation

Many Progressives and Warmists (who are primarily one and the same) were thrilled by the mention of “climate change”, an unscientific term for an unscientific crowd. As Grist notes

His second inaugural address was strong in its embrace of progressive values — gay rights, addressing poverty, opposing gun violence, stopping voting restrictions.

Plus saying we shouldn’t insult other people with different values right before insulting people with different values.

We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity. We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms. The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition; we must lead it. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries — we must claim its promise. That’s how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure — our forests and waterways; our croplands and snowcapped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That’s what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared.

Interesting. Obligations. Like increasing the national debt by well over 6 trillion in 4 years? Spending beyond belief, polarizing the country, starting the country down the path to national healthcare, which the majority are against.

The mention of “overwhelming judgement of science” is cute. Too bad for the Warmists that consensus is not science. And Obama’s sustainable power push was a miserable failure of political payback. Preserving our planet? It’ll still be here, just like it was through much of history when the temperatures were much warmer. Then there’s the mention of God. Cute.

James Delingpole fisks the comment, starting with the part that goes “We will respond…”

The first sentence is a blatant untruth. Concerted global action so far to deal with the threat of climate change has resulted in: higher energy prices; more deaths from fuel poverty; more intrusive regulation; the destruction of rainforests and the squandering of agricultural land on biofuels; higher food prices; famine and food riots – as a result partly of the drive for biofuels; the entrenchment of corporatism and rent-seeking to the detriment of free markets; the ravaging of the countryside with ugly solar farms and even uglier wind turbines; the deaths of millions of birds and bats; the great recession. How any of this has in any way benefited either our children (who are going to find it far harder to find a job) or future generations is a complete mystery.

He continues on, discussing what he calls “Obama’s declaration of war on reality”.

Amy Ridenour points out that the “deny” part is simply an insult aimed at those who do not buy into hotcoldwetdry. Considering that the 2nd inauguration had a massive “carbon footprint”, she’s right. And Obama supporters left trash everywhere, including planet killing water bottles.

Let’s end this by heading back to Grist

Two different messages at two not-very-different moments. Which fight we see, only time will tell — and could hinge on who shows up for the fight.

Philip Bump is referring to what Obama said in November, which was about not bothering with “climate change”. Even Warmists aren’t buying what Obama is selling.

Gore Highlights Cold In China And Russia To Push “Dirty Weather”

Shameless

That link goes to his own blog

Extreme weather is the new norm:

“Around the world, extreme has become the new commonplace.

Especially lately. China is enduring its coldest winter in nearly 30 years. Brazil is in the grip of a dreadful heat spell. Eastern Russia is so freezing — minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and counting — that the traffic lights recently stopped working in the city of Yakutsk.”

I like this response
