Immigration Debate Can Learn From History Or Something

Team Obama, Democrats, and their sheeple followers are itching to ramp up the push for “comprehensive” immigration reform. The White House and all their peeps have sent out a few tweets here and there. Obama had John “Amnesty” McCain over for tea to discuss the issue last week (interestingly, there are no articles as to what happened, just that it would happen). Here’s a humorous one I ran across while reading the Devils and Giants articles at NJ.com by Tom Deignan, but it might as well be written by Any Feelings Based Liberal

Immigration debate can learn from history: Opinion

All of the noise over the Affordable Care Act has made it easy to forget that immigration reform was also supposed to be a top priority in Washington this fall. Hoping to revive this debate before the congressional calendar runs out, President Obama met with business bigwigs last week and has a scheduled meeting with Republican leaders this week.

Let’s hope folks on both sides of this issue not only get moving, but also take a moment to crack open a history book. Because while there are certainly distinctions between past and present immigrant waves, even a cursory look at 19th century immigration undermines some of the myths and assumptions that continue to stall this debate.

Take, for example, the line often peddled by anti-immigrant activists: that the foreign-born of yesteryear were all legal and “played by the rules.” The fact is, crime, sloth and disorder were rampant in 19th century immigrant neighborhoods, thanks mainly to discrimination and severe competition at the bottom of the economic ladder. Just last month, Newark-based Benedictine Monk the Rev. Augustine Curley delivered a lecture at Seton Hall on anti-Irish rioting in 1850s Newark.

Um, that’s an argument I’ve never heard before (oh, and we’re not “anti-immigrant”, we’re against most illegals). But, consider, these legal and illegal folks brought crime, sloth, and disorder. That’s a hell of a recommendation to give today’s illegals a “pathway to citizenship”, wouldn’t you say?

Meanwhile, it may be true that past immigrants weren’t welfare moochers, but that’s only because there was no welfare from Washington upon which to mooch. Immigrants were actually more than willing to accept handouts from charitable religious groups or to swap their votes for assistance from political machines.

Hmm, so if we look at the past, we can expect the current crop of illegals to look to be on the dole and prostitute themselves politically?

Also, somehow, we’re supposed to believe that all these illegals, who have been pandered to for decades by liberals and super squishy Republicans will become Conservatives and vote GOP sometime in the future.

In the end, the contributions of 19th century immigrants and their offspring helped make the 20th century “The American Century.” Unless President Obama and Republican leaders get moving, we might not be able to say the same about the 21st century.

That was a time when America had a much smaller population and plenty of room to grow. Plenty of jobs to fill. But this is all the type of feelings based argument wrapped around some facts we can expect to hear against shortly, mostly as a way to deflect from the travesty that is Obamacare. Many of these immigrants came from Old Europe and China. Now they often come from 3rd World hellholes and want to live here, but not be citizens. They want the US to adopt their standards, rather than conforming to US standards. We have millions out of work, yet the allies of these illegals want to legalize them. They want these folks moved onto the public dole to create more Democrat voters, regardless of how it can hurt America and Americans.

The 19th century was a different time. Adding all these low wage workers will create a glut on the market, restricting wage increases, even deflating them. The price of goods and services can also be driven up. And housing.

How many of these illegals have tried to integrate? How many send money earned here to their home nations, depriving the American economy? How many knowingly broke our immigration laws, either by crossing the border or overstaying their visa? How many demand that America conform to them and take care of them?

NY Times: The ACA Losers Will Be Happy They’re Paying More When They Lose Their Jobs

Over at the NY Post, Michael Goodwin argues that the NY Times’ cheerleading for Obamacare harms the nation, noting that watchdogs became lapdogs. The NY Times continues its lapdog status as the Editorial Board comes out with yet another absurd piece

The debate over the effect the Affordable Care Act will have on individuals and families who buy their own policies has mostly been waged in anecdotes. Supporters of the law point to grateful individuals who were previously unable to get insurance or paid exorbitant premiums but found affordable coverage on the new health insurance exchanges. Critics counter with frustrated people who liked their old policies but will now be forced to buy a more comprehensive policy and pay a higher premium for it.

As it turns out, there are estimates of how many people might fall into one category or the other. Up to seven million people may be able to get health policies without paying any premium at all. Some four million people may have to pay more for new (and better) policies, not all of whom will necessarily be upset at getting better coverage at a competitive rate.

Of course, the problem there is that the administrations own mid-range estimate is that 93 million Americans will lose their insurance plans. A goodly chunk of them are folks working for companies that will replace the plans with more expensive ones. Others will say “forget it” and simply pay the fine when the employer mandate starts in 2015, which the Obama admin cynically pushed off past the 2014 mid-terms. Anyhow, 4 million people having to pay much more for (better) policies that they do not need isn’t exactly a vote of confidence, but, hey, the NY Times bigwigs who do not have to suffer under the same costs are cool with it.

Individuals facing higher premiums are understandably distressed. But there is no getting around the fact that health reform changes the status quo — including requiring insurance companies to provide essential health benefits that were not previously covered and to take on people who were rejected before because of their health.

Except, many people do not need maternity care. Men do not need gynecological coverage, and women do not need (generally) prostate coverage. Men do not need breast exam coverage. Not everyone needs substance abuse coverage. I don’t do drugs. I rarely drink. I’m not concerned about nor do I want to pay for it. But, all that extra coverage which people do not need pays for everyone else who does, and who are sicker. Oh, and to provide free contraception, sterilization, and abortifacients, a mandate which was created by Team Obama through rules, as it was never part of the mandates in the ACA.

Those who will pay more should take comfort in the knowledge that should they lose their jobs or face financial hardships or a medical crisis their previous policies would not have adequately covered, they would benefit from a health care safety net that offers federal subsidies and comprehensive coverage.

If you lose your job or have financial hardships, how are you going to pay your premiums? If you’re not paying your premiums, is the NY Times Editorial Board suggesting that you cannot be dropped? As far as “adequate coverage”, that’s a meme popping up within not just the Times, but far left Obamanuts. Why is it their job to decide what is considered “adequate”? Maybe that should be left up to the consumer.

Furthermore, why should there be any losers with this type of law? Shouldn’t the idea be to help everyone, not punish people?

Climate Change Means Weather Actually Changes

Doooooom!

(The Gazette) Four generations of my ancestors made a living in Iowa’s dirt. That proud legacy is under attack as extreme weather profoundly affects the productivity of Iowa’s current farmers and of farmers to come. Climate change is wreaking havoc on my farm, my family members’ farms, and every farm in Iowa.

I’m shocked that the weather would change. Since the weather was always completely predictable during the past 4.5 billion years, it must be because some farmer is driving a fossil fueled pickup along with other fossil fueled machines.

This year ushered in a new level of extreme weather. We had the worst blizzard on our farm in two years during a May 4 snowstorm, a foot of heavy, wet snow and 36 hours without power. I remember thinking; I suppose there’s someplace in the world where you can listen to frogs in the snow, but it shouldn’t be happening in Iowa. Climate change means the wrong weather at the wrong time.

Um, wait, so heavy and late snow is caused by warming? This is exactly why you Warmists are bat guano crazy.

On Comment Count Being Wrong

Many of you have noticed that sometimes the comment count can be off. For instance, on either the main page or in single post it might say “5” but there might be one or none. It’s been a bane for me for years. The count is including all those comments in the spam cue. I’ve tried this and that and something else many times to fix it, but, no dice.

I was trying again this morning, and gave up after starting a help post at the WordPress.org forums. Since I was doing admin stuff, I decided to deactivate the threaded comments plugins and activate the WP included capability. Interestingly, when I deactivated one, Yet Another Threaded Comments Plugin, the issue immediately stopped. So the counts should show correctly now.

Unfortunately, threaded comments doesn’t seem to work. Maybe if I leave it active and update to WP 3.7.1, but, eh, no one really used them in the first place except me now and then. However, I did leave Brian’s Threaded Comments active. It’s easier than adding a bunch of code to the original code for the comments (dot) php file that came with the Violator theme. Said code controls showing the trackbacks/pingbacks separately right before the comments on a single post page.

The BTC plugin no longer actually works for threaded comments, creator stopped updating it years ago, and I think it was the WP update to 3.0 that caused it to no longer thread. Hence the use of the “Yet Another” plugin.

Furthermore, without BTC the Gigya plugin wouldn’t work correctly. Those are the buttons above the comments which allow you to login to post using various methods like Twitter, Facebook, etc. Can make commenting easier in terms of not having to re-enter info (though you should be able to double click in a box like “name” to bring up your info).

Anyhow, if anyone sees anything funky, let me know. Seems fine in Firefox and Opera for me, both logged in and logged out.

Interestingly, the page also seems to be loading just a bit faster with that plugin turned off.

And don’t forget to check out what I declare to be our War on Women Rule 5 and linky luv posts

Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

Tarnished Nobel Prize: Obama Accused Of Crimes Against Humanity In International Criminal Court

Don’t these people know that Obama was just trying to make their lives better using college bull-session and community organizing inspired notions?

(Daily Caller) President Obama has been accused of crimes against humanity in a new complaint submitted to the International Criminal Court, based in the Hague.

Obama’s support for Egypt’s recently deposed Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated governing party forms the basis of the complaint filed against him by a group of Egyptian lawyers.

“Obama cooperated, incited, and assisted the armed elements of the Muslim Brotherhood in the commission of crimes against humanity in the period from 3/7/2013-8/18/2013, in the Arab Republic of Egypt,” according to the complaint, which was reported on by Egypt’s El Watan newspaper. (snip)

“Above and beyond the accusations of crimes against humanity that the lawyer-drafted complaint cited by El Watan levels against the Brotherhood, one need only look to the fate of Egypt’s Christian minority, who were especially targeted by the Muslim Brotherhood—and thus, by extension, their supporter, Obama—to see numerous examples of nearly every aforementioned definition of crimes against humanity,” wrote Egyptian-American writer Raymond Ibrahim.

On one hand, Obama is getting the Bush treatment. On the other, did Bush ever offer support of a regime that was completely brutal and engaged in terrorizing and controlling a population? One could make a case for this regarding Pakistani leader Gen. Pervez Musharraf, or perhaps Afghanistan’s Hamid Karzi. Neither was exactly a Boy Scout. Yet, were they committing “crimes against humanity” like Morsi and his ilk?

The complaint notes that Obama was an accomplice to what the Muslim Brotherhood did. Raymond Ibrahim, from above link, notes

..the complaint shows how Muslim Brotherhood leadership violated some of the above definitions, for example, by torturing, mutilating, raping, and killing Egyptians in their “sit in” camps (first reported here), with a highlight on the role the Brotherhood played in inciting violence and the killing of peaceful protesters around Itthadiya Palace back in December.

Among many others to be murdered in response to Brotherhood-incitement against the Copts, a ten-year-old girl was shot and killed while walking back from Bible class.  In the Sinai, a young Coptic priest was shot dead in front of his church, while the body of another Copt was found mutilated and beheaded.  Four other Christians were slaughtered by Muslims in Luxor province.  Most recently, a church wedding was attacked, leaving, among others, two girls, aged eight and twelve, dead and riddled with bullets.

He notes religious persecution and apartheid, as well as many other crimes included under the Statute of the ICC. Make sure to read the whole thing.

On one hand, this is entirely correct. On the other, most US presidents and 1st world leaders, now and past, could probably be charged under these terms as accessories to the charges. Either way, Obama’s Nobel Prize is looking a bit tarnished.

NOAA Provides Visuals Of Climate Doooooom!

It’s like they aren’t even aware of the 17 year pause or something, but this gives The Atlantic’s John Metcalfe a thrilling up his leg

Weather geeks, say goodbye to your morning productivity. The data conjurers at NOAA have rolled their latest environmental visualization out of the hanger, and it is bursting with every possible thing you’d want to know about the planet’s health, from past to present to worrisome future.

Want to know what the clouds like looked during your city’s last nasty storm? The “NOAA View” portal has crisp satellite images stretching 5 years back. Curious where snow and ice have accumulated this year? The frozen stuff is splashed about the globe like splattered white frosting. How hot will the weather soon be if humanity doesn’t rein in its emissions? One of the several simulations crammed into this Swiss Army climate tool has this prediction: It will be blastedly warm, despite our best attempts to stop burning fossil fuels.

Here’s two visualizations Metcalfe took from NOAA

The top one is them looking into a scrying pool to forecast the global temp in 2100 under a “low emissions” scenario. For the bottom one, Matcalfe writes “And the world is positively choking in torrid air by 2100 under a “very-high emissions scenario”. Huh. Torrid air. But don’t say Warmists aren’t hysterical fools who used to be the crazies standing on street corners hold apocalypse signs.

And the doom keeps going on and on. From the NOAA website

The NOAA View imagery portal provides a single point for experiencing NOAA data from satellites, models, and in-situ analyses. The site allows for seamless browse, animate, and download capability of high resolution images and Google Earth formatted files. With over 60 datasets (and growing) that go as far back as 1880 and out to 2100, NOAA View provides the ability to see our dynamic planet and how it changes over weeks, months, years and even decades.

These are the same people who wouldn’t be able to predict the weather with 100% accuracy out to 10 days, and they’re going to tell us the climate in 2100? Good grief. They’re simply making up data, which is not science.
