Team Obama Launches “Climate Change” Website

Because, really, what else can they do? Their foreign policy is a disaster, just like their economic policies. He’s nominating people that are so hard-core leftist that Senate Dems refuse to even vote on them. Obamacare is beyond a mess. Prices are rising. Wages are down. So now is the time to offer ideas to local governments on how to institute more rules and regulations

(The Blaze) Even with recent survey’s finding that climate change was not a top priority for Americans and many thinking that it’s actually exaggerated in the media, the Obama administration is pushing forward on its fight against global warming in a geeky fashion.

The White House on Wednesday announced an initiative to provide private companies and local governments better access to already public climate data, which it is displaying through maps and even gaming-type simulations.. The idea is that with that localized data they can help the public understand the risks they face, especially in coastal areas where flooding is a big issue.

The government also is working with several high-tech companies, such as Google, Microsoft and Intel, to come up with tools to make communities more resilient in dealing with weather extremes, such as flooding, heat waves and drought. They include computer simulations for people to use and see what would happen with rising seas and other warming scenarios. Companies will also hold brainstorming sessions with computer programmers aimed at designing new apps on disaster risk. The New York Times reported that companies such as these will be vital at making the majority of information on the site usable to the average person.

The website is at data.gov/climate. One of the data sets is on population, so Obama and his peeps must be buying into the notion pushed by many of the seriously hardcore climate cultists regarding population reduction. Here’s a great data set you won’t see on the website

Don’t Let a Sports Injury Keep You Out Of The Game, Get Covered Today

This week, as part of our final push to encourage as many Americans as possible to get covered ahead of the March 31st enrollment deadline, the Administration is launching an effort to reach college basketball fans young and old during March Madness – to remind them of the importance of having quality, affordable insurance.

As part of our effort, today, HHS, in partnership with our President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, is releasing new data looking at the economic costs of common sports injuries like sprains and fractures – costs that underscore the importance of having coverage to protect you financially if you suffer an unexpected injury, whether on the court, on the field, or in your everyday life. According to this new data, nearly 2 million individuals had sports-related injuries that were treated in emergency departments in 2012. The most common of these were ankle or knee sprains and leg fractures. Estimated rates of sports-related injuries were even higher among children and young adults under the age of 25. An estimated 12 million individuals between the ages of 5 and 22 years suffer a sports related injury annually, and about 20 percent of all injury-related emergency room visits are among children 6 to 19 years of age.

For those without health insurance, these injuries—which can happen to anyone, regardless of overall health status—can be very expensive. A sprained ankle, for example, can cost you $2,290, and charges for a broken arm, for example, average nearly $7,700. This can be a huge financial blow to young people and families alike.

The good news is that, at the Health Insurance Marketplace, it’s easy to find quality affordable coverage for those unexpected sports injuries—and for important preventive measures like regular check-ups, immunizations and other screenings.

The good news is that it will still cost your $2,290 for that sprained ankle (seriously? In what world?), and at least $5,081 for that broken arm. A study by HealthPocket Inc. in December found that the average individual deductible for Obamacare’s bronze plan was $5,081 a year, which is 42 percent higher than the average deductible of $3,589 for an individually purchased plan. And all those athletes involved in March Madness have their schools to take care of them.

But, hey, it is good to be covered. You might pull a hammy or whack yourself in the ankle playing yet another round of gold. Or get your mom jeans caught in the sprocket of your bike, causing a spill. Or maybe some whiplash from talking out of both sides of your mouth. Or struck by lightening from lying to the American people on a constant basis.

Don Lemon Asks If A Black Hole Swallowed Flight 370

Is it any wonder CNN’s ratings are in the tank? Personally, I’ve been flogging the “it was the aliens” meme in discussions (solely as a joke, though it would be amusing to see some faces if it turned out to be real), but this one is beyond stupid. This is the kind of stupid following the phrase “hey, y’all, watch this!”

(Mediaite) CNN’s Don Lemon has been entertaining all sorts of theories about the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, including the chance something “supernatural” happened, but on Wednesday night, he actually asked panelists about the possibility a black hole was involved.

Lemon brought this up along with other “conspiracy theories” people have been floating on Twitter, including people noting the eerie parallels to Lost and The Twilight Zone, and wondered, “is it preposterous” to consider a black hole as a possibility?

Yes, yes it is preposterous. Foolish, idiotic, beyond stupid. Find your own adjective. The other panelists did a good job of not performing a double facepalm and/or laughing in his face. Remember, this is the same fool who asked Bill Nye, a TV science guy, if global warming caused the near earth asteroid.

Anthony Watts: “Remember this the next time one of these idiots discusses the science of global warming.” We should, because Lemon brought up all sorts of crazy theories on the show besides the black hole. Which would have destroyed the Earth.

NY Times: Let’s Beat Putin With Climate Change Action!

The Space Race and the technologies it produced weren’t purely an offshoot of the U.S.-Soviet missile competition, but they were certainly energized by that competition. Well, if we’re going to go at it again, this time I want an Earth Race. I want America to lead in developing an energy policy that will weaken the oil-and-gas-autocracy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and, as a byproduct, produce the technologies that will mitigate climate change, make America a global technology and moral leader and ensure that the next generation can thrive here on Earth.

Tom does actually offer up a good idea from someone else

The key ingredients for a new U.S. energy strategy, argues Hal Harvey, the C.E.O. of Energy Innovation, is, first, “to optimize affordability, reliability and clean together, rather than one at the expense of the other.” Second to “take advantage of new technology, we finally have the capacity to build an energy system we can be proud of, and by choosing this future, we will stimulate even more technologies that deliver energy that is indeed affordable, reliable and clean.” And, third, to “ensure that our natural gas bonanza actually ushers in a truly clean future.”

I’d agree with that. Not for “climate change”, but for a cleaner environment. But we have to stop doing it in a) idiotic ways (wasteful, foolish investments, for instance), b) for political payback, c) where it is really expensive, d) where it jacks up consumer costs for other energy, and e) creates real environmental damage.

Still, I don’t think Tom’s idea will have Putin quaking in his boots.

Vast Majority Of Obamacare Signups In Rhode Island Are Through Medicaid

Putting more citizens directly under the banner of Government health insurance. Guess who gets to pay the most? That’s right, other taxpayers

(WPRI) Since Oct. 1, more than 68,000 Rhode Islanders – roughly 6.5% of the state’s population – have signed up for health insurance through HealthSource RI, the state’s new Obamacare marketplace. But two-thirds of them have enrolled in a program that was actually created by Lyndon Johnson, not Barack Obama.

Medicaid, the government health program for low-income Americans, has gotten the majority of sign-ups on HealthSource RI: 48,602 of the 68,292 Rhode Islanders who used the new marketplace to enroll through March 8 were added to the state’s Medicaid rolls. (Even that may understate the Medicaid share, since 3,345 of the 19,690 who signed up for private insurance plans hadn’t paid their first premiums yet.)

This is working out so well.

Australian Politician Really Vexed By ‘Keyboard Warriors’

William “Bill” Shorten is a member of the Australian Labor party, and is currently leader of the opposition, since Labor was wiped out, crushed, during the 2013 elections, and a major reason for Labor’s loss goes directly to their cap and trade policies, much as it was when Labor lost so bad in the 2012 Queensland, Australia elections that they were no longer recognized as a political party. Bill is very upset that people are allow to offer their opinions

(UK Guardian) The climate change debate has been abandoned to “conspiracy theorists and keyboard warriors, the social media trolls and the angry shouts of talkback radio”, Bill Shorten says, and scientists should feel insulted their peer-reviewed research is being subject to “feelpinions”.

The opposition leader gave a speech to a “Science meets Parliament” event on Monday in which he said the Labor party would not walk away from action on climate change but the debate had suffered because of people using one-off weather events to justify their science.

He said consensus needed to be built on climate change, with scientists defending their findings more vigorously.

“I think the degradation of the climate change debate is the cautionary tale for what happens if we abandon the field to the conspiracy theorists and keyboard warriors, the social media trolls and the angry shouts of talkback radio,” he said.

In other words, dissenting voices must not be allowed. Remember, these same Labor party folks attempted, and in some cases succeeded, to ban speaking in a negative fashion about climate change, and Aussie climate change laws. Good little fascists. Funny how the keyboard warriors tend to be right and the consensus folks tend to be wrong, just like their computer models and talking points.

“On climate change, I think too many scientists – and indeed, politicians – made the mistake of projecting the strong consensus within their academic community onto the population at large. Too many of us took the popular support for action on climate change for granted.”

Yes, you did, and your Party paid the price. Aussie’s do not support your restrictive and costly policies. People yammer on about Doing Something about “climate change”, but when the rubber meets the road, they refuse to pay the price themselves.

“In this age of self-publishing platforms, it has never been easier for people to broadcast their opinion to the world – regardless of its veracity or foundation,” he said.

“On scientific matters, this means any outspoken blogger can pit their anecdotal ‘evidence’ and ‘commonsense’ reasoning against years of painstaking, peer-reviewed research.

Which is amusing, since Warmists blame every weather event on “climate change”. They even blame earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis on CC. Labor blamed the drought on CC, then, when Australia started seeing wet weather, they blamed that on CC. It’s a cult.

Oh, and when someone yammers on about “consensus”, they’ve left the realm of science and journeyed to sociology or some other type of soft discipline.

Climate Astrology: Cold Weather Caused By Global Warming

Cold snaps result of global warming, study says

Jet streams are dipping further south to cause extended cool temperatures

This year’s uncommonly cold winter has put to bed the notion global warming is anything but a myth, right?

Wrong, says a group of researchers out of New Jersey’s Rutgers University, who have put out a new study that suggests the prolonged cold snaps we’ve experienced could be a direct result of climate change.

The 2012 paper says melting Arctic ice is weakening the jet stream. This weakening causes the jet stream to dip further south, which in Canada brings severe cold temperatures for prolonged periods of time.

Except, there was big growth in the Arctic in 2013, meaning there was much more ice during the winter. Judith Curry already beat this assumption up regarding the polar vortexes that keep rolling down.

And Anthony Watts (hat tip for the story) notes that for the 1976-1977 bitterly cold and snowy winter, they blamed global cooling.

Unfortunately, there are people stupid enough to buy that warming causes cold and snow.

Arain said the bottom line is that one cannot draw conclusions about climate change based on temperatures on a particular day.

How about during entire seasons? How about when much of the northern hemisphere has seen cold and snowy winters 5 out of the last 6 winters? How about when much of the Northern hemisphere saw no spring in 2013? How about when there has been no statistically significant warming in approaching 18 years? How about when all the Warmist predictions fail to meet real world data?

This doesn’t prove that the world hasn’t warmed: it has. It doesn’t prove that there wasn’t a spike during the 1980’s (and a few other times during the Modern Warm Period): it did. What it’s knocking out is the notion of anthropogenic global warming, or, as it’s been rebranded in order to cover every weather event (along with earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, a bad night’s sleep, skidmarks, etc), climate change.

Obamacare Premiums Said To Soon Skyrocket

(The Hill) Health industry officials say ObamaCare-related premiums will double in some parts of the country, countering claims recently made by the administration.

The expected rate hikes will be announced in the coming months amid an intense election year, when control of the Senate is up for grabs. The sticker shock would likely bolster the GOP’s prospects in November and hamper ObamaCare insurance enrollment efforts in 2015.

The industry complaints come less than a week after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sought to downplay concerns about rising premiums in the healthcare sector. She told lawmakers rates would increase in 2015 but grow more slowly than in the past.

“The increases are far less significant than what they were prior to the Affordable Care Act,” the secretary said in testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee.

Her comment baffled insurance officials, who said it runs counter to the industry’s consensus about next year.

But, hey, Kathy knows best. Except for any of the details, like how many people have paid, what the mix of young healthies is, etc. Where will this hit the most?

Areas of the country with older, sicker or smaller populations are likely to be hit hardest, while others might not see substantial increases at all.

Insurers will soon start releasing their new rates, which need approval. You can bet the ranch that Democrats will attempt to squash any serious rate increases. However, the proposed rate increases will make it out into the public domain, and the citizens will see what O-care should cost.

Meanwhile, Slate’s David Weigel is attempting to find good O-care stories. This one amuses me

I am one of the people that has been helped by Obamacare. My policy costs $284.50. After a subsidy of $282, I pay $2.50 a month net. It has a $500 deductible with a $750 total out of pocket. I was flabbergasted that it was such a deal. I told friends about this and the first person, instead of being happy for me, said, “Congratulations, you are now on welfare, you should be so proud.” This pretty much shut me up and made me feel embarrassed about the subsidy. I dont look at it as welfare but I guess a lot of people do.

I’d love to know where someone has a $500 for only $284 a month.
