Bishops In Peru Issue Call On Hotcoldwetdry

Perhaps they should have started by recognizing the huge amount of money ($45 million) to hold COP20, not to mention all the  money spent for those over 10k people to fly in,  along with all the fossil fueled “carbon pollution”

(Physical.org) Catholic bishops from around the world issued an urgent call Saturday for greater action to combat global warming and reduce “climate injustice.”

Religious leaders of all faiths should work together “to work sustainable agreements to promote the care of our planet,” the clergy members said in a statement issued by the Episcopal Conference of Peru in Lima.

“Climate change creates poverty and leads to an increase in injustice.”

Know what works great to move people out of poverty? Inexpensive,  affordable, reliable, and obtainable power.

Know what doesn’t help? Overbearing government with increasingly more power, taking more money from the people, and artificially raising the cost of living.

anyhow,  I’m guessing there was no poverty during the Little Ice Age and Dark Ages, right?

NC Black Causus To Hold Talks On Police Citizen Relations

Interesting

(Raleigh N&O) Black lawmakers at the General Assembly want to talk about how to prevent fatal incidents like those between citizens and police in Ferguson, Mo., and elsewhere from happening in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus scheduled a public panel discussion for Wednesday at the Legislative Building in Raleigh.

They want to discuss the underlying causes and stuff. Well, here’s a tip: don’t steal from a store, rough up the owner, walk in the middle of the street, which is guaranteed to catch the attention of the police. Don’t slam a patrol car door into an officer of the law, don’t assault the officer in the car, attempt to take the officer’s firearm, run away, then charge the officer.

Don’t be a career criminal. Do not resist arrest (this doesn’t change my belief that charges should have been forwarded for trial in the Eric Garner situation. But, neither I nor you were present in Grand Jury room). Tell your followers that getting an education is a good thing, and that engaging in crime is a bad thing. Support initiatives that enable Blacks to escape from the soul crushing conditions that Democrat policies created in the first place.

This does not absolve police of all, mind you. There are bad actors in all of life, including law enforcement. Ask a police officer, though, and they will tell you exactly how they look at people, particularly when they primarily deal with people who are breaking the law in one form or fashion, and constantly lie to them.

Warmists Who Took Long Fossil Fueled Flights To Lima Want To End Use Of Fossil Fuels

The rank hypocrisy of this shouldn’t surprise anyone in the least. One part of Progressivism is the notion of  “do as I say not as I do”

Goal to End Fossil Fuels by 2050 Proposed at Lima Climate Talks

A draft negotiating text was circulated yesterday at the UN climate summit in Lima, Peru that would cut carbon emissions to zero by 2050, earlier than many other proposals, and could spell the end of the fossil fuel industry. It’s one of the most ambitious proposals to come out of the conference.

According to The Guardian of London, the countries behind this aggressive proposal to address climate change include Norway, Sweden, the Marshall Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Peru and Panama. Their hope is that it will provide a negotiating framework heading into next December’s final talks in Paris.

I wonder how all the folks from those nations traveled to Lima?

The 33-page draft text suggested that developed countries reach peak emissions by next year en route to eliminating them entirely by 2050 and achieving negative emissions by 2100. It noted that “the time frame for peaking may be longer in developing countries, in the context of equitable access to sustainable development.” and suggested pathways to achieving its goal.

Perhaps they should start by making their own “emissions” zero and even negative. Of course, all Warmists, part of the broader Progressive movement, rarely practice what they preach, as they do not want to suffer the negative consequences of their beliefs. They just think that Other People should have to suffer for those beliefs.

Washington Post On CIA Report: “This is not how Americans should behave. Ever.” Or Something

By now you surely know all about the 100% Democrat CIA torture report, yet another in a long line of reports by Democrats designed to demean America and give our enemies comfort and talking points, and reasons to attack the U.S., her citizens, and her property. It will also cause lots of problems with our allies, as they will have zero confidence in sharing intelligence and working with the CIA and other U.S. federal intelligence groups. It’s a partisan hack job that failed to talk to actual CIA employees. This has made the Washington Post Editorial Board, a bunch of dilettantes kept safe by rough and ready people like those who work at the CIA, Very Mad

The horrors in America’s ‘dungeon’ should never have happened

SHORTLY AFTER the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, the CIA began taking prisoners captured in U.S. anti-terrorism operations. Some were tortured. This is not news. But a long-classified Senate report released Tuesday depicts the disgusting extremes.

The release of the Democratic report’s findings and executive summary instantly came under heavy criticism — from current and former CIA officials, among others — and reignited a debate about whether the CIA’s “enhanced interrogation program” was justified. As before, the answer is no. President George W. Bush and Congress both condoned this barbarity but should not have. You don’t have to accept every assertion in the Senate report to see that.

There is no doubt that the CIA may have gone a bit too far in their methods. America and Americans are not perfect. In case the WPEB missed it, we were fighting, and are still fighting, against a brutal subsection of Islam, which has no problem torturing and killing. Oh, and cutting off the heads of captured civilians. Funny how we rarely hear or read the same level of apoplexy from Liberals over the conduct of Islamist jihadis….oh, wait, right, Liberals blame the United States for the actions of Islamic jihadis.

This is not how Americans should behave. Ever.

Well, perhaps Islamic jihadis shouldn’t fly jets into buildings. They shouldn’t kidnap U.S. citizens and saw their heads off. They shouldn’t blow up U.S. citizens and property. They shouldn’t rape and cut off limbs. They shouldn’t use chemical weapons. They shouldn’t declare war on the U.S. Americans shouldn’t have to behave in the manner the CIA (supposedly) did: how about if the WPEB tells Islamists to stop being evil?

Any reckoning of outcomes has to account for the severe blow dealt to America’s global reputation by the inevitable exposure of these techniques, harm which the country is still trying to repair. But to our mind, the argument over practical outcomes is mostly beside the point. Torture is wrong, whether or not it has ever “worked.” As an Obama administration official said Tuesday, “The reason we prohibited these techniques is because they are contrary to our values.”

Again, there’s no doubt the CIA made mistakes. This, though, is the kind of report that used to be kept secret. Democrats have gleefully trotted it out in order to attempt to diminish, demean, and embarrass the U.S. on the world stage. Not that our reputation is doing that well after 6 yeas of Obama. The report will make our citizens less safe. Kudos, Democrats! The blood of every American killed in the near future by Islamic jihadis is on your hands. You’ve made it that much more difficult to gather intelligence around the world, and put our citizens in danger.

Personally, I’m more concerned about stopping something like this

from happening again.

College President Writes “All Lives Matter”, Apoplexy Ensues

Welcome to the insane world of college education, one where an entire Greek system, including sororities, are punished for a rape allegation that has fallen apart, and where students looking to be lawyers are allowed to ask for delays in taking their exams because they have the vapors over the Brown and Garner Grand Jury decisions, and for daring to be inclusive

(Fox News) The president of prestigious Smith College is red-faced and apologetic Tuesday for telling students on the Northampton, Mass., campus that “all lives matter.”

Kathleen McCartney wrote the phrase in the subject line of an e-mail to students at the school, whose alumni include feminists Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan, former First Lady Nancy Reagan and celebrity chef Julia Childs. McCartney was attempting to show support for students protesting racially charged grand jury decisions in which police in Missouri and New York were not charged in the deaths of unarmed black men.

Protesters have adopted several slogans in connection with the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, including “Black Lives Matter.” McCartney’s more inclusive version of the refrain was seen as an affront that diminished the focus on black lives and racism, according to emails obtained by FoxNews.com.

That’s right, she actually apologized for writing “all lives matter” rather than “Black lives matter”. In fact, her apology devolved into groveling. Because people criticized her

The Daily Hampshire Gazette, which first covered the story, quoted one Smith sophomore, Cecelia Lim, as saying, “it felt like she was invalidating the experience of black lives.”

(McCartney) quoted one student as saying: “It minimizes the anti-blackness of this the current situation; yes, all lives matter, but not all lives are being targeted for police brutality. The black students at this school deserve to have their specific struggles and pain recognized, not dissolved into the larger student body.”

Well, they obviously do not matter that much, because only 5% of the enrollment is Black. It’s also a women’s only college, which makes it discriminatory. From the Daily Hampshire Gazette

“It minimizes the anti-blackness of this the current situation; yes, all lives matter, but not all lives are being targeted for police brutality,” wrote another student.

Says a pampered princess attending a prestigious (and discriminatory) institution of higher learning.

A third student at the vigil, sophomore math major Maria Lopez, said McCartney’s first email was poorly received on campus.

“A lot of my news feed was negative remarks about her as a person,” she said, referring to students’ reaction on social media. Lopez added that McCartney, whom she called “President Kathy,” is generally well-liked among students.

“She acknowledged her mistake,” Lopez said.

So it is now a mistake to say that “all lives matter”.

“It’s getting increasingly difficult to figure out what you can say on the modern campus, even for university presidents… Too many of today’s students want freedom from speech rather than freedom of speech,” Greg Lukianoff, President of Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) and author of “Freedom From Speech” told FoxNews.com.

Pretty much. This “controversy” has even sparked an editorial by the Daily Hampshire Gazette. Poor little hothouse flowers.

Is It Really A Surprise That #COP20Lima Has A Massive Carbon Footprint?

Normally, I would do a headline like “Surprise! #COP20Lima Has a Massive Carbon Footprint”, but, hey, It’s not really a surprise in the least, and the sarcasm of using “Surprise!” would be redundant

Lima Climate Talks Set for Record Carbon Footprint

The current U.N. climate talks will be the first to neutralize all the greenhouse gas pollution they generate, offset by host country Peru’s protection of forest at three different reserves, organizers say.

Wow. They aren’t even pretending to pay the speeding ticket with this one and plant new trees.

Now the bad news: The Lima conference is expected to have the biggest carbon footprint of any U.N. climate meeting measured to date.

At more than 50,000 metric tons of carfb/phbon (I’m assuming that was just bad spelling for carbon) dioxide, the negotiations’ burden on global warming will be about 1 1/2 times the norm, said Jorge Alvarez, project coordinator for the U.N. Development Program.

What’s the problem? Well, everything had to be built. Concrete, wood, plumbing, components flow in from as far away as France.

Solar panels were not used because….wait for it….the sun is unreliable in Lima. Which is strange, considering how little it rains there. Instead, they are relying quite a bit on…wait for it…diesel generators. They wanted to rely quite a bit on hydroelectric, but weren’t able to make it happen.

Then you get this

  • Construction, nearly 20 percent of the footprint.
  • Jet fuel burned by the estimated 11,000 delegates and observers who flew in from abroad. About 30 percent.
  • Local transportation. Organizers hired more than 300 buses since there are no public transit services to the venue. All burn fossil fuels. About 15-20 percent.
  • Electricity, solid waste treatment, water, paper, food, disposable plates and cups, keeping 40,000 police on high alert. The balance.

Attendees are mostly forgoing the use of bicycles. Japan shipped 121 hybrid cars (what’s the footprint in putting them on fossil fueled boats?), but most didn’t arrive. As a sidebar, the article ends thusly

On Monday, U.N. organizers announced that, “in view of the high temperatures expected to continue and intensify,” delegates were invited to adjust “by wearing business casual attire” to most events.

No wonder Warmists are so worried about a tiny rise in temps. The next 3 days are going to be 73, 73, and 71 (all slightly below average). These weenies think that is “high temperatures?” And 73, 73, 71 is not intensifying. It’s no wonder their science is so unscientific.

UVA Decides Not To Reinstate Greek System Quite Yet

Despite knowing exactly which fraternity was accused in the Rolling Stone rape allegation, the University Of Virginia decided to suspend all Greek system activities. No evidence, no due process. So, now that so much of the story has fallen apart, you didn’t really think that the administration would do the right thing, did you? Well, the right thing in Reality Land, in Due Process Land, in Law Land, no, they went with Leftie Land

(AP) The University of Virginia refused to reinstate Greek activities that were suspended after a Rolling Stone article alleged a woman was gang raped at a fraternity house, despite the magazine acknowledging mistakes in its reporting, but officials said Monday that the story and debate has led it to create a group to explore its policies and campus culture.

Last month’s article and revelations late last week about Rolling Stone missteps that casted doubt on the story prompted an “intense, ongoing period of introspection,” the university said in a news release. It led to the creation of a group of faculty and students that will review policies, practices, organization structure and resources to “support the ultimate goal of providing an outstanding education while ensuring the safety and well-being of students,” the release said.

But, of course. This is a continuation of the “fake but accurate” narrative, blaming everyone and putting the burden on those who had nothing to do with the issue.

The group’s work will focus on: culture, including student behavior, Greek life, alcohol and other drug use and student self-governance; prevention, including bystander training, peer education and physical safety such as lighting, camera systems and policing; and response, including survivor support, training for students and faculty, and its policies for handling incidents.

And, along the way, perhaps a recognition of 4th Amendment rights and abuse of power by the university.

While (university President Teresa A.) Sullivan remains sensitive to concerns about broadly indicting the entire Greek system, the school said the purpose of the suspension was to give officials and fraternity and sorority leaders time to “pause to identify solutions that would best ensure the well-being and safety of students.”

In other words, everyone is guilty till proven innocent, and there is no method in which to allow anyone to be proven innocent.

It is strange that there is such an issue with sexual assault on liberal college campuses, eh?

BTW, why has the media focused on UVA while ignoring several other high profile rape cases?

#COP20Lima: Climate Aid Isn’t Charity, But Reparations

But, don’t you dare say that “climate change” has nothing to do with Leftist politics

At Lima Talks, Nations Worst Hit by Global Warming Say Climate Aid Isn’t Charity, But Reparations

….

AMY GOODMAN: There are many in the United States, particularly Republicans in Congress, saying, “I mean, we just can’t afford this.” Would you call it altruism, U.S. helping poorer countries deal with climate change?

SALEEMUL HUQ: This is nothing to do with altruism. This is to do with reparations from polluters. The United States has risen as an economic power based on emissions over the last 150 years that have caused the damage that we are now seeing. They recognize that, and they have taken on the obligation to help the poorer victims of the impacts of climate change that is caused by human-induced pollution. This is a pollution treaty, and it’s about polluters and victims of pollution.

Say, how did Ms. Goodman and Mr. Huq get to Lima? Goodman is from the U.S., and Huq is from Bangladesh. They surely didn’t swim, did they? Or row a boat.

This is all about leftist politics. Shifting money from one to the other for no work.

SALEEMUL HUQ: We expect the negotiators and the governments who are here to come up with a good package that, on the one hand, is adequate to solve the problem. An inadequate package is simply not going to be acceptable. On the other hand, they should also galvanize and build on the momentum that is happening around the world in taking actions. So, we’re not sitting and waiting for the Lima negotiators to come to a deal. People all over the world are actually doing things on the ground. And we need that to be supported and enhanced.

Labeling the money as reparations (for some countries succeeding while others fail because they’re failures) rather than charity allows these “developing countries”, which never seem to take steps forward, to dictate the terms of how much money they will demand.
