Past Warming Event Is Totally A Window Into The Future

And this is supposed to be bad news or something

(Nature World News) Warming that occurred almost 56 million years ago isn’t all that different from the human-caused global warming we’re experiencing today. And a new study suggests that this past warming event can provide a window into future climate change.

During the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum, or PETM, 56 million years ago, temperatures rose by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius (9 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit). It also involved the average annual release of at least 0.9 petagrams (1.98 trillion pounds) of carbon to the atmosphere. While it’s promising that Earth and most species managed to survive this episode, it also took millennia for them to recover.

First of all, if you are using improper terminology, referring to CO2 as “carbon”, your point is a political one, not scientific. That same bad terminology is used in the statement from the scientists

“There is a positive note in that the world persisted, it did not go down in flames, it has a way of self-correcting and righting itself,” lead author Gabe Bowen, from the University of Utah, said in a statement. “However, in this event it took almost 200,000 years before things got back to normal.”

Normal? What is normal? Can any Warmist tell us what that is? If we look at the history of the Earth, normal would be much higher temperatures than today. But, there is no “normal.” They Earth has gone through periods of heat, warmth, cool, cold, even snowball Earth.

Let’s delve into the statement, shall we?

Bowen says previous research has shown that during the Paleocene-Eocene warm period, there was “enhanced storminess in some areas, increased aridity in other places. We see continent-scale migration of animals and plants, ranges are shifting. We see only a little bit of extinction – some groups of deep-sea foraminifera, one-cell organisms that go extinct at the start of this event. Not much else went extinct.”

“We see the first wave of modern mammals showing up,” including ancestral primates and hoofed animals,” he adds. Oceans became more acidic, as they are now.

So, nothing bad? Just typical changes to the Earth?

One also has to ask “what caused the spike in CO2 and methane release during that time period, which are being blamed for the temperature increase?” They offer some conjecture. Why can’t those conjectured reasons be applicable today? Oh, right, “climate change” is a political movement. Not scientific.

Big meanies

“So you lost your dick?”: Inside an Ivy league transphobia nightmare
Meredith Talusan thought her fancy liberal college would be a safe space for a trans student. Here’s the ugly truth

Earlier this month, Talusan was asked to leave her home at Telluride House, a cooperative living community loosely affiliated with Cornell that seeks to foster “self-governance and intellectual inquiry.”

Her crime? Protesting alleged harassment from a fellow resident, who at various points referred to her as “a man dressed as a woman” and as having “lost [her] dick.” A Change.org petition with more than 1,200 signatures has called on the Telluride Association, which oversees the House, to remove the alleged harasser and compensate Talusan for expenses she’s incurred finding alternate accommodations.

The Telluride Association is one of those hippie-dippie, social-justice/educational organizations full of well-meaning liberal folks. But the way it has failed to protect its first transgender resident is an object lesson in the ways those on the left can actually be even more unsympathetic — and in this case, vicious — as those who don’t even pretend to care about minority rights.

Oh, wait, this is about Liberals being jerks. Usually, one can rely on Salon to be ultra nutty in its hatred of Conservatives and just generally ultra nutty, but, they do run a few articles which make sense. In this case, liberals being jerks. Let’s face it, there are jerks throughout life. We cannot necessarily subscribe motives and jerkiness of a few to the overall collective at all times.

Of course, Salon did attempt to subscribe bad motives to all conservatives with that last bit about “those who don’t even pretend to care about minority rights”. But, actually Gabriel Arana is correct. We do not pretend to care about minority rights. We care about equal rights for all people, rather than sticking them in a box. Equal protection for all.

#AskDrH Finally Answers A Few Questions

People, including myself, since I asked him lots and lots of questions on Twitter, were wondering if this would ever happen

(White House) Last month, Dr. John Holdren — the President’s science advisor – invited the public to ask him anything about climate change on social media using the hashtag #AskDrH.

Since then, he’s gotten a lot of questions. Brandon, a seventh-grader, wanted to know if climate change will affect him during his lifetime. A number of people asked whether climate change is driving extreme events, like the heavy snowfall we’ve seen recently in Buffalo, New York. Some people wanted to know what Dr. Holdren is doing to prevent climate change himself.

Here are the questions he answered

That last one is a question that I asked at least several times, and one I often ask Warmists

I find it interesting that the first thing he starts with, and the thing he says is most important, is implementing Obama’s “climate change” agenda. Things that affect Other People. This is what is most important to Warmists, forcing That Guy to adhere to the Warmist beliefs.

He does finally mention at the end a few things that he and his wife are doing in their own lives, such as his wife driving a hybrid, he takes the metro to work at the White House, and doesn’t even own a car in D.C., uses CFL’s (compact fluorescent light-bulbs), and recycles. That was actually the point of the question. Of course, he hasn’t given up fossil fueled travel himself.

The answer regarding the question about temps not increasing in 18 years is typical Warmist claptrap. I would have loved to hear him answer my question as to why 95% of computer models failed to predict the Pause.

PC Loons Lose: FCC Refuses To Deem Redskins Obscene Nor Profane

The cause of doing away with the name “Washington Redskins”, primarily the “Redskins” part, became a Big Issue for liberals, a cause celebre, because someone told them that the Redskins name was mean and evil and racist and bigoted and stuff. So, for months and months they worked to do away with the name “Redskins”, including petitioning to have a radio station license pulled

(The Hill) The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday ruled the name “Redskins” is not profane or obscene.

In a formal ruling, the commission rejected calls to yank the broadcast license of a radio station owned by Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder for excessively using the team’s name, which some find offensive.

George Washington University professor John Banzhaf filed a petition in September opposing the license renewal of the D.C. station, WWXX-FM.

To be obscene, it must related to something related to sexual conduct. To be profane, per the FCC’s definition, it must be “words that are sexual or excretory in nature.” Looks like someone should have actually read the FCC’s definitions prior to filing the petition.

The commission cited the First Amendment, saying it does not withhold licenses based on a subjective view of what is appropriate programming.

It noted that some racial or religious slurs are offensive to many, but it has previously declined “extending the bounds of profanity to reach such language given constitutional considerations.”

“Indeed, the Commission has held that ‘if there is to be free speech, it must be free for speech that we abhor and hate as well as for speech that we find tolerable and congenial,'” according to the commission.

Banzhaf whine to the FCC in his petition about “hate speech” and using the name is “fighting words”. Here’s an idea leftists give to righties who do not like certain TV programs: change the channel. I find MSNBC to be hate speech…ok, really, I find it to be silly and idiotic…so I do not watch it.

Liberals are all for Free Speech, as long as it is Free Speech they agree with.

Personally, I think they should do away with the Redskins name and call the the Washington Papooses, based on their play and record during the Daniel Snyder era. Oh, and because I despise the Redskins, being a Giants fan.

Being A Jerk On A Train Is White Entitlement And Racist Or Something

Leave it to one of the nuts at Salon, in this case Brittney Cooper, to equate someone simply being a jerk to someone who is also being an inattentive jerk

“Listen when I talk to you!”: How white entitlement marred my trip to a Ferguson teach-in
A nightmarish train ride reminds me why too many white people don’t get how short black America’s fuse is right now

“Nightmarish”! It probably won’t surprise you that Ms. Cooper “teaches Women’s and Gender Studies and Africana Studies at Rutgers”.

On Friday, I was on the train to New York to do a teach-in on Ferguson at NYU. Beats headphones on, lost in thought, peering out the window, I suddenly saw a white hand shoving my work carry-on toward me. Startled, I looked up to see the hand belonged to a white guy, who was haphazardly handling my open bag, with my laptop perched just inside to make space for himself on the seat next to me.

That he wanted the seat on the now full train was not the problem. That he assumed the prerogative to place his hands on my bag, grab it, shove it at me, all while my computer was unsecured and peaking out, infuriated me. I said to him, “Never put your hands on my property.”

His reply: “Well, you should listen when I talk to you.” That line there, the command that when he, whoever he was, spoke, I should automatically listen encapsulates the breadth of the battle against racism we have to fight in this country.

Buoyed by his own entitlement, his own sense of white male somebodiness, this passenger never even considered that he might simply try harder to get my attention before putting his hands on my stuff. His own need to control space, his own sense of entitlement to move anything in his way even if it held something of value to another person, his belief that he had the right to do whatever he needed to do to make the environment conform to his will are all hallmarks of white privilege.

There’s actually a couple things that could have happened here. First, he could have briefly tried to get her attention, she did not respond, so he moved her stuff. Second, he could have tried hard to get her attention, she didn’t respond, he moved her stuff. Third, he may not have even bothered, and moved her stuff. It was rather a jerk move, however, it was also a jerk move on her part to be taking up the extra space. This had nothing to do with “white male somebodiness” nor entitlement nor racism. It was just an encounter where people are being jerks. Ever had someone cut you off in traffic? Ever have somebody race you to a seat on a train? People jumping up on the airplane? People can be rude, inconsiderate, think only of themselves. Welcome to Life, honey. You were inconsiderate for taking up the seat.

If he was a racist, would he want to sit next to a Black woman?

Anyhow, the lesson here is not to assign wrong motives when being a jerk is the most simple explanation.

BTW, remember that little story Michelle Obama told the other day about her raaaaacist treatment at Target? Her tune was different while on Letterman. The sister of the lady Michelle called a racist is outraged.

Holiday Meal Comas And Climate Change Are Apparently A Big Thing

This is actually an interesting article. How does climate change fit in?

Holiday Meals, the Food Coma and Climate Change

You know that warm, cozy, sleepy feeling you get after an over-sized meal shared with too many friends and family to fit around a single table? It’s some gossip to share in the kitchen, but I will never know the truth of it. My compulsion is to doze off on the couch between two over-stuffed uncles watching the game, where I’m lulled into the safety of sleep by vague murmurs and laughter from the kitchen and the drone of the TV. The post-holiday dinner coma is a comforting part of a familiar holiday tradition. What could possibly be wrong?

Humans need air that contains at least 20 percent oxygen. Lucky for us, nature has provided us with 21 percent. The main ingredient in air (78 percent) is nitrogen, and the remaining 1 percent is spice in the soup. Mess with the spice, and you ruin the entire meal! The mechanism for removing excess nitrogen from our bodies is through urine, but there is no such efficient biological mechanism for removing most airborne poisons that may be contained in that surprisingly important 1 percent. When CO2 concentration in the air we inhale reaches about 0.12 percent, many of us will start to feel sleepy and maybe head-achy. Not a health risk, but you won’t be functioning at your best. I’ve measured CO2 levels in meeting rooms and school classrooms in excess of .3 percent, eight times higher than normal! Ever wonder why some meetings put you to sleep? Or why your kids are wet noodles when they come home from school? It might not be the presenter’s fault, open a window and let in some fresh air!

This can cause that food coma where we all get sleepy, so opening up some windows can reduce the CO2 content.

The air we breathe is a delicate mix that is easily thrown off balance. Very small changes in its composition can dramatically affect our health, how we think, feel, and behave. Global warming aside, atmospheric CO2 is a pollutant, levels are rising, and our bodies are reacting along with the planet. We are like lobsters that have been thrown into a pot of cold water on the stove top. The heat is on, and we can feel something slowly changing. How long before we start clamoring to get out of the pot?

Good grief. Climarettes strikes again. Warmists just can’t help themselves when it comes to including their pet cult in everything. What should be a good article explaining how the buildup of CO2 within our homes and workplaces turns into a whiny screed on “climate change”.

Employees At British Government Agency Advised To Avoid Saying “Merry Christmas”

Is it just a coincidence that this is occurring at the Department of Energy and Climate Change?

(UK Telegraph) Staff at a Government department have been urged to avoid writing the words “Merry Christmas” in seasonal email greetings to avoid upsetting anyone.

Instead, employees at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have reportedly been advised to stick to the more neutral term “Seasons Greetings”.

In a memo circulated around the department, recipients were also warned that images on their e-cards should not feature skin, according to The Sun.

The message, destined to bring accusations of cancelling Christmas raining down on the department, read: “As an organisation of multiple faiths and agnostics serving a community of the same and in the interest of inclusion, I’d avoid images with skin.” (snip)

The memo comes after it emerged that the equality and diversity team at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust had issued its staff with a set of guidelines intended to avoid legal action by any employees claiming they had been discriminated against because of the choice of timing, venue or catering for their Christmas events this year.

Elsewhere, the Westford, Mass, Department Of Public Works was ordered to remove a sign reading “Merry Christmas” several workers had erected. A Canadian woman claims she was kicked out of a mall for saying “Merry Christmas”. The mall disputes the assertion.

AthiestTV (had no idea there was such a thing) will broadcast lots of anti-Christmas/religious programs on the 24th and 25th. Bet those who are off and able to watch won’t mind getting holiday pay.

On Obama’s Cuba Gamble

Obviously, the big news from Wednesday was the swap of American Alan Gross, imprisoned in Cuba for 5 years, along with a bunch of spies and criminals. Along with that comes a somewhat normalizing relations with the dictatorial “Communist” government of the Castros. Is this a good idea or bad idea? Jazz Shaw makes an interesting point

Much of what I’ve picked up on this over recent years has come not only from discussions with my colleagues here, but from Fausta Wertz of Fausta’s Blog, and she’s been writing up a storm on the subject today. Criticism of the Cuban government is wide ranging and entirely justified, as she has described to me many times. The Castro family is beyond awful… evil being a far better word. The power structure they have established mimics many of the worst dictatorships in modern history. Their communist party keeps their people in ignorant oppression, depriving them not only of necessary freedoms, but of information and even basic human needs in terms of food, shelter and medical care. They jail, torture and kill those who so much as speak out against them, and many citizens simply disappear, never to be seen again. What good living there is to be had in Cuba is reserved for the party members who keep the Castro family in power.

But one of several arguments which supporters of the President’s actions have pointed out repeatedly today cannot be ignored. I could take the above paragraph and substitute the word China for Cuba and it would remain precisely as true. The major differences between the two are that China is vastly more powerful, more dangerous and more influential. Their human rights record is, if anything, worse than Cuba’s. They can threaten the entire globe with a single move, where the Castros are generally limited to smaller evils and mischief in South America. And yet somehow we have established relations with China. This doesn’t excuse either country for their evil, but only serves to point out some of the harsh realities of foreign policy in the modern era.

On one side, what can “charting a new course” hurt? Obama is correct that the current policy has done nothing to increase liberty, freedom, democracy, economic prosperity, etc. Virtually no other nations have any sort of embargos and restrictions on Cuba. Canadians stream to Cuba for vacations in droves. Other nations have trade with Cuba. Here are the things Obama intends to do

  • Re-establish diplomatic relations
  • More effectively empower the Cuban people by adjusting regulations
  • Facilitate an expansion of travel to Cuba (but, this does not include straight vacations to Cuba)
  • Authorize expanded sales and exports of certain goods and services from the U.S. to Cuba
  • Authorize American citizens to import additional goods from Cuba
  • Initiate new efforts to increase Cubans’ access to communications and their ability to communicate freely

On the flip side, what, exactly, is America getting out of this? As Fuasta notes “I was wondering, is Cuba easing Cuba’s embargo on American products and American travel? Will they not continue to shelter FARC & other known terrorists? Nothing on that in O’s speech. ” What are the Cuban people getting out of this? Because Obama has demanded nothing from Cuba. And therein lies the problem with this policy of Obama’s. In fact, it can hurt

But if we are to lift trade, travel, and diplomatic pressures, it should never be done in what appears to be a quid pro quo response to the release of American hostages. The signal sent to the irresponsible nations of the world is that, so long as there is a political constituency that supports rapprochement, America may give in to your demands if you only try to ransom American citizens.

Charles Krauthammer wonders if there is a dictator that Obama won’t appease. Well, North Korea is the only, in honesty. He’s done a good job with the North Korean’s, mostly blowing of their demands when NK gets frisky. Elliot Abrams calls this a gift to the Castro’s. The editors of the National Review are likewise unimpressed. Many Republicans, and some Democrats, are livid. Marco Rubio is apoplectic

Calling President Obama “willfully ignorant” and “the worst negotiator” the U.S. has had in decades, Sen. Marco Rubio on Wednesday slammed the administration’s agreement with Cuba to open normal diplomatic relations for the first time in more than 50 years, vowing that the incoming Republican majority in the Senate will try to undo the deal with whatever tools they have at their disposal.

On the action itself, Mr. Rubio said normalizing relations with Cuba will only allow Cuban President Raul Castro to shore up his power base and continue oppressing his own people, adding that the president’s belief that the move will help the Cuban people is naive.

“This entire policy shift announced today is based on an illusion, on a lie — the lie and illusion that more commerce, more access to money and goods will translate to political for the Cuban people,” Mr. Rubio, Florida Republican and a potential 2016 presidential candidate, told reporters. “All this is going to do is give the Castro regime, which controls every aspect of Cuban life, the opportunity to manipulate these changes to perpetuate itself in power.”

But, don’t think it is only Republicans. Here’s the Editorial Board of the Washington Post

IN RECENT months, the outlook for the Castro regime in Cuba was growing steadily darker. The modest reforms it adopted in recent years to improve abysmal economic conditions had stalled, due to the regime’s refusal to allow Cubans greater freedoms. Worse, the accelerating economic collapse of Venezuela meant that the huge subsidies that have kept the Castros afloat for the past decade were in peril. A growing number of Cubans were demanding basic human rights, such as freedom of speech and assembly.

On Wednesday, the Castros suddenly obtained a comprehensive bailout — from the Obama administration. President Obama granted the regime everything on its wish list that was within his power to grant; a full lifting of the trade embargo requires congressional action. Full diplomatic relations will be established, Cuba’s place on the list of terrorism sponsors reviewed and restrictions lifted on U.S. investment and most travel to Cuba. That liberalization will provide Havana with a fresh source of desperately needed hard currency and eliminate U.S. leverage for political reforms.

Personally, I do not have a problem expanding our dealings with Cuba, normalizing them a bit. We have dealings with Russia, China, and other nations which are “enemies”, have poor human rights records, etc. Might something good come of it? It’s possible. But, to do this in such a one sided way is a mistake. To provide all the things without any quid pro quo is a mistake. To provide those things while doing a people swap is a big mistake.
