Hutzpah: Dem Lawmakers Want Obama To Declare Baltimore A Disaster Area Due To Riots

(The Hill) Maryland lawmakers are pressing President Obama to issue a major disaster declaration for Baltimore in the wake of riots late last month. 

“Given the massive impact that the situation in Baltimore is having on the state’s resources, we respectfully request that you urgently approve Federal assistance,” members of the state’s congressional delegation wrote in a letter to Obama, which was sent on Tuesday but released Wednesday. 

The letter was signed by Maryland Democratic Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, as well as Democratic Reps. Steny Hoyer, Elijah Cummings, Chris Van Hollen, Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, Donna Edwards and John Delaney. 

The lawmakers also offered “strong support” for Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s (R) request for the major disaster declaration for Baltimore.

So, let’s see: Baltimore residents rioted, looted, burned buildings and cars, destroying their own neighborhoods, and they want money to replace what they destroyed? They burned the town down and now want federal funds? This is like asking your insurance company to pay you after you intentionally burned down your own house.

On the flip side, because Baltimore residents rioted, looted, burned buildings and cars, attacked police officers and other citizens, the city is in trouble (well, further trouble). Who wants to visit? Who wants to do business? This is a city that had to keep people at their baseball park due to the threat of violence. This is a city which played a baseball game with no spectators, because of massive concern for the spectator safety from mobs. This is a city having to spend oodles of money they do not have trying to secure the city from violence.

On the third side, maybe this money should come from the mayor, who wanted to give the thugs “room to destroy”. From the Dems request

The Governor has provided the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with a preliminary damage assessment of over $19 million in expenditures for local jurisdiction law enforcement, security, firefighting, and emergency management costs as well as out-of-state resources required to supplement local and state resources. This Major Disaster declaration is necessary to address emergency protective measures and public buildings and contents per Category B & E of Public Assistance under the Stafford Act. This situation has the potential to negatively impact services in other areas, given an already strained state budget environment.

That’s right, the thugs caused $19 million in expenditures. And what the Dems want is more money to protect Baltimore property and citizens from thugs in a system that the Democrats created and have upheld since the late 1960’s. Let Maryland and Baltimore pay for it, not federal taxpayers from other states.

LA Times: Say, Shouldn’t Illegal Aliens Be Given Political Clout?

Supreme Court redistricting case could reduce Latinos’ political clout

For 50 years the “one person, one vote” principle has been used to divvy up political power by counting all people in states and putting them into electoral districts of roughly equal size.

But the mathematics of power may be about to change in a way that could shift political clout away from fast-growing Latino communities in states such as California, Texas and Florida and move it to the suburbs and rural areas.

The problem here is that many of these people are not eligible to vote, because they are not U.S. citizens, either here legally or illegally. They should have zero political clout, at least in terms of voting.

The Supreme Court surprised election-law experts Tuesday and said it would hear arguments this fall about whether voting districts should continue to be drawn by using census population data, which include noncitizen immigrants who are in the United States both legally and illegally, or whether the system should be changed to count only citizens who are eligible to vote, as conservative challengers are seeking.

Oh, good, the LAT noticed that part about noncitizen voting.

Districts in the Legislature are required to have virtually the same population. But in some districts, a large share of residents are noncitizens. That’s particularly true in parts of Los Angeles and the Central Valley that have large immigrant populations. The number of citizens can be as much as 40% higher in some districts than in others.

Here’s a simple solution: get rid of your illegals. Send them back where they belong.

But Assemblyman Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville), chairman of the Latino Legislative Caucus, said the issue was a question of fairness.

“Many of us who represent a large number of noncitizen immigrants assume a responsibility to represent everyone within our districts, regardless of their citizenship status,” he said in an email. “These individuals deserve to have representatives that will also champion their concerns too.”

No, they don’t. Your American citizen individuals deserve 100% of that representation.

How such a switch might affect the partisan balance within the state is harder to forecast, in part because much depends on how new district lines might be drawn. Currently, Democrats represent many of the areas that would be relative losers, but also many of the affluent districts that would gain clout.

And there is the actual issue: Democrats couldn’t care less about the illegals, they care about the political power.

So, A Sea Lion Walks Into A Bar….Forget The Joke, It Must Be Climate Change!

An amusing story, turned into bat guano insane by a Cult of Climastrology member at Grist

Sea lion, fed up with climate change, hits the bar

Sea lions have been driven out of the sea and onto city streets because their tasty sources of food — like anchovies and sardines — are being decimated by acidifying oceans. In San Francisco, for example, they’ve been wandering the streets starving and confused, but in Southern California (of course) they’re a little bolder.

Last week, a sea lion flopped onto dry land in Orange County, declared “ugh,” and, just like you, immediately headed to the nearest bar.

From the Los Angeles Times:

The pup wandered off the beach, through the parking lot and up the steps leading into Beach Ball just before 11 a.m. May 12, bar patrons said.

Sea lion sightings have become more common recently along Orange County beaches. More than 2,000 of the animals, most of them dehydrated and malnourished, have washed ashore this year in California, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The sea lion, in addition to being fucking hungry because humans ruined his home, has an eye infection which, in the perfect intersection of tragic and cute, makes him look like he’s winking all the time.

The LA Times article also went Warmist, after starting off cute regarding the bar always carding patrons, and the sea lion not having ID.

Doom: Models State Most Himalayan Glaciers Could Disappear By 2100

I recently mentioned “cli-fi”, which is “climate fiction”, a growing subsection of novels and stories which incorporate climate change into the overall story. Rather like when authors would write fiction books based on nuclear war, EMP events, even zombies (I love a good zombie book, FYI, and read the heck out of them). Of course, most apocalyptic fiction books were more on the story, and how people survive, rather than being preachy about the subject, unlike cli-fi. I wonder, can we put all the doomsaying from the Cult of Climastrology into the realm of cli-fi, since it does seem rather fictional?

Scientists warn Everest glaciers at risk of disappearing

Glaciers in the Everest region could shrink at least 70 percent or even disappear entirely by the end of the century as a result of climate change, scientists warned on Wednesday.

Researchers in Nepal, the Netherlands and France studied weather patterns on the roof of the world and then created a model of conditions on Everest to determine the future impact of rising temperatures on its glaciers.

“The worst-case scenario shows a 99 percent loss in glacial mass… but even if we start to slow down emissions somewhat, we may still see a 70 percent reduction,” said Joseph Shea, who led the study.

Doom in 2100? Check. Computer models? Check. Blaming Mankind for “emissions”? Check. Forgetting that there has barely been any warming since 1998, which goes against 95% of the computer models (the same computer models that also fail when applied to pre-model data)? Check. Hedging their bets with un-scientific words like “could” and “may”? Check. Don’t tell the UK Guardian, though, because they are All In In Doomology

Most glaciers in Mount Everest area will disappear with climate change – study

Most of the glaciers in the Mount Everest region will disappear or drastically retreat as temperatures increase with climate change over the next century, according to a group of international researchers.

The estimated 5,500 glaciers in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region – site of Mount Everest and many of the world’s tallest peaks – could reduce their volume by 70%-99% by 2100, with dire consequences for farming and hydropower generation downstream, they said.

Even the Guardian couldn’t avoid using the word “could”. Then they slipped this in down in the article, after proclaiming Doom

There is still much uncertainty about how deeply levels of greenhouse gases will affect temperature, snowfall and rainfall, and very few of the region’s glaciers have been measured in detail. However, increasing rates of snow and ice melt are already observable and precipitation is expected to change from snow to rain at critical elevations, where glaciers are concentrated.

So, deep uncertainty, but, the Guardian and other Warmists are certain of doom.

The researchers caution that the new results should be seen as a first approximation to how Himalayan glaciers will react to increasing temperatures in the region.

“Our estimates need to be taken very cautiously, as considerable uncertainties remain,” said Patrick Wagnon, a glaciologist at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement in Grenoble, France and co-author of the report.

In other words, this is just another in a long line of scary stories, cli-fi, if you will, based on computer models and partisan political Beliefs.

Republicans Push For Over-The-Counter Birth Control, Liberals Immediately Oppose The Plan

One would think those on the Political left would be thrilled by the notion of making it easier and cheaper to obtain birth control. Nope

(The Hill) Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) is leading a new push to allow women to buy birth control without a prescription, hoping to deliver on one of the biggest promises of his freshman Senate campaign last year.

A half-dozen Senate Republicans have signed onto Gardner’s bill, which would require drug companies that sell contraceptives to file an application to sell their products over the counter.

“Most other drugs with such a long history of safe and routine use are available for purchase over the counter, and contraception should join them,” Gardner wrote in a statement. Groups like Planned Parenthood have opposed the idea, which they argue could drive up contraception prices.

The group has pointed to ObamaCare’s contraception mandate — requiring insurance plans to cover all FDA-approved forms of birth control — and said that insurers may no longer cover the medication if it’s not prescribed by a doctor.

Typically, most products that go from prescription to OTC see an overall reduction in cost, partially since the entire system of obtaining a prescription then picking them up at the pharmacy helps to increase cost. More competition also creeps in when they go OTC.

But, doing this upsets Liberals because people might have to actually pay $5-7 dollars for a month-long allotment of birth control pills, rather than having Other People pay for them via Obamacare. Prescription birth control was given a specific carve-out per Health and Human Services rules when it comes to co-pays and deductibles, essentially making them free, unlike, say, heart medicine, which usually requires a copay, and will most likely require the person to hit their deductible (this depends on the plan picked and the state for the plan, so, of course, it’s Very Complicated).

So, the opposition is all about supporting Ocare and the medical firms that have bought into the program, monetarily rewarding those supporters. CNN ran a big story in 2012 showing that doctors supported making birth control pills OTC. You can find many other articles saying the same, a few years back.

The Hill article includes quotes from Dr. Mark DeFrancesco, president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, saying that he and the group are against this plan. Interestingly, they were all for it long, long, long ago in 2012. This is all about propping up Ocare (as well as making money)

(Breitbart) According to a press release last week, the “Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act” would encourage contraceptive drug manufacturers to file for a “prescription-to-over-the-counter switch by allowing for priority review of the application and waiving the FDA filing fee.”

The measure provides for incentives to drug companies for any contraceptive available to adults aged 18 and above, which is deemed “safe and effective for routine OTC use” by the FDA.

The bill would also repeal Obamacare’s restrictions on consumer use of health, medical and flexible savings accounts for the purchase of OTC drugs, thus further enabling the purchase of OTC contraceptives with these types of savings accounts. Additionally, the legislation would repeal Obamacare’s annual limits on flexible savings account contributions.

“It’s time to allow women the ability to make their own decisions about safe, effective, and long-established methods of contraception,” Gardner said.

Allow women to make their own decisions? Making it easier to obtain contraceptives? Allowing the use of savings accounts? Brother, just stop. That’s freedom stuff.

People Very Upset Over Gentrifaction In San Francisco’s Mission District

Usually, when we are discussing “gentrification”, it is about White People moving into Black areas, such as we are seeing in downtown Detroit, where social capital, property values, and economic activity (along with the tax base) are growing, while crime declines. Gentrification is just a growing way to Blame Whites. Here’s what’s happening in San Francisco

(NY Times) Luxury condominiums, organic ice cream stores, cafes that serve soy lattes and chocolate shops that offer samples from Ecuador and Madagascar are rapidly replacing 99-cent stores, bodegas and rent-controlled apartments in the Mission District, this city’s working-class Latino neighborhood.

As San Francisco has become the preferred bedroom community for Silicon Valley, the Mission, with its urban edginess, has become the hottest location. Close to the center of the city, it has historically been home to Mexican and Central American immigrants whose large families live in small apartments in narrow Victorians and older buildings. Taquerias, bakeries, bars and auto mechanic shops line the streets where Spanish is spoken. Like Chinatown, this distinctive neighborhood helps define San Francisco, but the gentrification — fueled by technology workers and the popularity of Airbnb — is faster and more drastic here than elsewhere.

Obviously, this is all a Bad Thing, seeing all these West Coast liberal rich folks moving in to the area. It’s evil and it must be stopped!!!!!!

Ms. Tejeda joined hundreds of other Mission residents in a demonstration this month at City Hall, where they held a sit-in in front of the office of Mayor Edwin M. Lee to protest housing prices and the evictions of longtime tenants. But the mayor was not in.

“We are here to save the heart and soul of San Francisco,” said Roberto Hernandez, a community organizer with the group Our Mission No Eviction. He spoke disparagingly of a one-bedroom house in his neighborhood that sold for “$2 million in cash to someone who invented some app.”

Well, there is a point about this influx of money driving out long term residents.

Another complaint is that the influx of newcomers is bleaching out the Latino culture that drew them here. “People who come here say, ‘I love these murals,’” Mr. Campos said, adding, “You cannot have the art without the artists. We are losing this neighborhood.”

And right there is the main point: they do not like Whites moving in. Despite the influx of Latinos having driven out the Whites who first settled San Francisco. Then we find, all the way at the end

Newer residents are grateful for some of the changes gentrification has brought, which include a drop in crime.

“When I moved here, this was a no-go zone,” said Matthew McGraw, founder and chief executive of Rocket Science Consulting, a design and technology company. With his wife, six children and two dogs, he lives in an airy warehouse, which by day is shared with employees.

Huh. So the crime is going down? Weird, right?

Astrophysicist: The Sun Primarily Controls Climate, Not “Carbon Pollution”

This will make Warmists Very Upset, since they have been indoctrinated to Believe that CO2, what they unscientifically call “carbon”, is the primary “control nob” for ever change in climate and the weather (long term weather is what is known as climate) since 1850 (or 1980, or 1950, or whatever date they want to cherry pick to make their point). They will attack the astrophysicist personal (especially because he is an Israeli), and maybe even trot out anecdotal studies from Cult Of Climastrology friendly interest groups to say “NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!”, and then jump in their fossil fueled vehicles to go to a climate change rally

Carbon dioxide is not the knob controlling global warming
According to astrophysicist Dr. Nir Shaviv the sun is the main driver of climate change

Atmospheric scientist Dr. Judith Curry told the U.S. Senate on Jan 16, 2014 that, in light of the extended ‘hiatus’ of 15 years (to 2012) with no appreciable global warming despite a significant rise in carbon dioxide, it is clear that carbon dioxide is not the knob that controls global warming. Natural factors are clearly more influential.

The biggest and most obvious natural factor is the sun. According to Israeli astrophysicist Dr. Nir Shaviv, solar physics receive only nominal attention in the climate change reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Dr. Shaviv will be presenting “Solar forcings and climate change past and present” in Calgary at the Red and White Club on June 2, 2015.

Shaviv’s blog “Sciencebits” explains how he too once assumed carbon dioxide was the ‘knob’ of climate change – but a closer look revealed this was not so. Further astrophysical work demonstrated to him that the sun is the main driver of climate change.

Dr. Shaviv explained to me recently that the “Total Solar Irradiance” is the main solar factor reviewed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), although in fact this so-called ‘solar constant’ is highly variable. The numerous other solar influences are excluded from IPCC reporting – leading to skewed results that, until recently, have given the impression that carbon dioxide from human industrial activity drives climate change. Dr. Shaviv says carbon dioxide is a minor player.

Does CO2 play a small bit in climate? Of course! Other greenhouse gases play their part, particularly methane. However, the Sun is the primary driver, along with natural earth forces.

Good News: Capitalism Threatens All Life On Earth, ‘Cause Climate Change

If it seems that, lately, more and more Cult of Climastrology members are willingly exposing many of their true Beliefs, especially as it relates to economic activity, and, specifically, capitalism, you’d be right. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the Communists and Socialists put their energy into the environmental movement. They’ve been joined by the Progressives (nice fascists), all of who are now CoC members, elevating “climate change” (remember, they are saying that all changes in the climate, all weather events, are now mostly/solely caused by Mankind) over any real environmental issues, and using this as a way to destroy capitalism

Tomorrow you will wake up and may well have a hot shower to start your day. Then you will go to your kitchen and use a variety of electrical devices to prepare breakfast. If you are lucky enough to have a job, then you will travel to work in a car or use public transport. All of this activity requires the use of finite energy resources while producing varying amounts of carbon dioxide. According to the people at the World Wildlife Fund I alone need 2.19 planets to sustain my lifestyle.

The unsustainable lifestyle that people lead is based upon the ever increasing consumption of finite resources which is destroying the natural world at an increasing rate of knots. The extinction of 200 species a day is just one manifestation of how capitalism and the industrial civilization it has spawned is killing the planet.

Critics may well say why are you so pessimistic? All we need to do is improve energy conservation and introduce renewable energy sources on a mass scale and everything will be fine and we can keep on enjoying our turbo consumerist lifestyle. Tim Garrett an associate professor of climate sciences at Utah University, has exposed this belief as nothing short of wishful thinking:

“Making civilization more energy efficient simply allows it to grow faster and consume more energy,” says Garrett. “I’m just saying it’s not really possible to conserve energy in a meaningful way because the current rate of energy consumption is determined by the unchangeable past of economic production. If it feels good to conserve energy, that is fine, but there shouldn’t be any pretense that it will make a difference.”

Professor Garrett makes the controversial point that carbon dioxide emissions, which are a major cause of runaway climate change, can only be stabilized by a complete collapse of the global industrial economy or society builds the equivalent of one nuclear reactor per day.

You get the point: these people loathe capitalism (which allowed them to build a website called Dissident Voice, tell us that the content is copy-writed, and pimp books on the sidebar that are published thanks to capitalism, and certainly all written on computers that were produced thanks to capitalism), much like a goodly chunk of Warmists also loathe it (and they’re happy to tell us on their smarphones while sipping lattes in their expensive clothes). They want to see the end of capitalism, and using “climate change” is just one of their vessels. What they want is a command economy run by The Government. Failing to realize that this will significantly effect their own lives, to their own detriment.
