Ocasio-Cortez invokes Bible in response to White House on climate change

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y) on Wednesday responded to White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders telling her to leave climate change up to a “much higher authority” by invoking the Bible.

While not quoting specific verses, the freshman lawmaker invoked scripture in defense of her impassioned pleas to address climate change.

The lawmaker appeared to be paraphrasing a Relevant magazine article from last year titled, “Stopping Climate Change Is a Part of Following Jesus.” The article included adapted translations of specific biblical passages.

And they can do all this with a carbon tax and taking away your freedom.

Also, same people freak out over religion, well, only the Christian religion, in a public space.

Philly Is Taking Aim At NRA In Cracking Down On Illegal Guns Or Something

Taking Aim at the NRA, Philadelphia DA Vows Crackdown on Illegal Guns

While lambasting what he characterized as his predecessors’ ulterior motives and their tendency to kowtow to the National Rifle Association, Philadelphia’s District Attorney took aim Wednesday at people who buy guns for others who can’t legally own them.

District Attorney Larry Krasner said his office will use a decade-old but barely enforced law to prosecute cases in which gun owners fail to report lost or stolen guns. Anyone who breaks this law will face a $2,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail.

In a fiery hour-long news conference, Krasner also took aim at the NRA, past Philadelphia district attorneys, the federal government, the Republican-controlled Pennsylvania Legislature and the state Attorney General.

“A lot of the guns that are claimed to be lost and stolen never were; they were sold illegally and they end up in the hands of people who commit crimes,” Krasner said.

The district attorney painted a vivid picture of gun owners who have purchased up to 20 guns and who had at least one of those firearms traced to crimes. He called claims that those guns were all lost or stolen “bogus.”

Can anyone point out where the NRA or their spokespeople have stated that they are OK with straw purchases? OK with people doing the above? I’ll wait. Not long, because you won’t find it.

Regardless, this is a strawman. First, good luck trying to purchase 20 guns in a short time in Philly. Even in much less restrictive areas, someone is going to notice all those applications for background checks. Second, there are federal laws on the books for strawman purchases, which are illegal. Law abiding gun owners have no problem with blocking people who shouldn’t have a firearm from getting one, and prosecuting bad players.

Kimberly Burrell, whose 18-year-old son was gunned down in 2009, backed up Krasner’s assertion. Her son’s killer, she said, got ahold of his gun through a so-called straw purchase, whereby someone who is not legally allowed to buy a gun obtains one through a middleman. Her own son was carrying a gun attained through a straw purchase at the time of his death.

Perhaps she should be more worried as to why her son illegally obtained a firearm. Her other two sons have been involved with the criminal justice system, ie, they’ve committed crimes serious enough for jail time. Not mentioned is that she is also part of Krasner’s Crime Victim Advisory Committee.

By all means, go after people who illegally sell firearms. I’m good with it. The NRA is good with that.

The NRA has repeatedly filed lawsuits opposing gun control measures throughout the country. It was unclear if the group will be pursuing a suit against the Philadelphia law, but Krasner said he could see such a legal fight in the horizon.

Unclear meaning that Rudy Chinchilla for NBC 10 in Philly didn’t bother contacting them.

Go ahead and do this, but, at the same time, don’t forget to go after criminals…oh, right, that’s racist.

Cold Weather Doesn’t Mean ‘Climate Change’ Isn’t Fake Or Something

Realistically, cold weather and cold winters do not mean that climate change, whether you believe it is natural or mankind, is fake. The summer of 1778 was reported to be unusually hot, and resulted in more men dying from the heat than from wounds during the Battle Of Monmouth in June of that year. This was during the Little Ice Age.

But, as we’ve seen, the Cult of Climastrology keeps trotting out reasons why you’re use of a fossil fueled vehicle is making it hotter which also makes it colder. And here’s National Geographic

Why cold weather doesn’t mean climate change is fake
Weather and climate aren’t the same thing, meaning you can expect harsher winters in a warming world.

A record-breaking cold snap is relentlessly descending on parts of the U.S. this month. It spawned from a split polar vortex that sent cold, Arctic air across the continent.

In a time when climate change is discussed in the context of record highs, droughts, and wildfires, cold weather and blizzards can seem out of place. For those who deny that climate change is happening, it’s an opportunity to undermine scientific consensus.

Once you mention consensus, you’ve left science.

How do you explain a cold winter in a world that scientists say is getting hotter?

First, it’s important to understand the difference between climate and weather. Climate is defined as the average weather patterns in a region over a long period of time. It’s the difference between Europe’s temperate and Mediterranean zones versus the harsh cold conditions of the Arctic tundra. Each of these climate regions experiences day-to-day fluctuations in temperature, precipitation, air pressure, and so on—daily variations known as weather.

Yet, Warmists do this daily, blaming/linking every weather event on anthropogenic climate change, and even blaming/linking volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis on mankind’s output of carbon pollution.

When the term global warming was popularized a few decades ago, it referred to the phenomenon of greenhouse gases trapping heat in the atmosphere and warming the average temperature of the planet. Though record high temperatures in many places have been one impact of this decades-long shift, scientists now understand that an atmosphere changed by rising levels of gases like carbon and methane leads to more climate changes than just warming.

Scientists believe Earth will experience more extreme, disastrous weather as the effects of climate change play out.

In other words, the actual data for warming wasn’t working out for them, so they changed the language to encompass everything. Totally scientific, eh?

In response to President Trump’s January 20 tweet about cold temperatures, Potsdam University physicist Stefan Rahmstorf noted on Twitter that, while North America was experiencing cold Arctic air, the rest of the world was abnormally hot. And, the polar vortex bringing that cold air to the U.S. may actually become increasingly unstable, Rahmstorf noted.

As more Arctic air flows into southern regions, North America can expect to see harsher winters. That was the conclusion of a study published in 2017 in the journal Nature Geoscience. It found a link between warmer Arctic temperatures and colder North American winters. A separate study published in March of last year in the journal Nature Communications found the same link but predicted the northeastern portion of the U.S. would be particularly hard hit.

Same old same old way of blaming mankind for creating a warmer world that will have winter weather. Cult.

NC’s teacher diversity gap: ‘Where are the black and brown teachers?’

Wake County teacher Carl Tyson sat dumbfounded next to his former student, Trey Stevens. After all these years, why did Trey come back to his class to say he was a favorite teacher? Of all of the teachers, why was he so special?

“I’m trying to figure out the defining moment,” Tyson said, clearly honored but confused.

Trey, now a sophomore at Fuquay-Varina High School, explained it was Mr. Tyson’s PE class at Holly Grove Middle School and his reading club, “Boys, Books and Bow Ties,” that left an impression. He is also one of the only black male teachers Trey has had in school.

“I trusted you,” Trey whispered, his words soft but powerful.

Stunned, Tyson turned away, buried his face in his hand and cried. (snip)

Researchers say that kind of connection is crucial, especially between students and teachers of color, and can help minority students perform better in reading and math, score higher on standardized tests and be more likely to attend college. Known as the “role-model effect,” researchers say students of color benefit both academically and emotionally from seeing teachers who look like them.

See, now, if this was about a white kid having a connection with a white teacher, it would be called racist and white privilege. In Reality Land, it’s perfectly understandable to see how it can happen when a youngster sees someone who looks like them. It’s nature. Yet in North Carolina, where minority students make up 52 percent of the traditional public school body, 80 percent of teachers are white. For students of color, especially black and Hispanic boys, that means they may seldom – or never – have a teacher who looks like them during their kindergarten through 12th grade years.

WRAL News analyzed data showing the race and gender of nearly 100,000 teachers and 1.4 million students in North Carolina’s 115 public school systems. Eleven school districts in the state had no Hispanic teachers last school year, and eight school systems had no black teachers. One district had no teachers of color at all.

The lack of teacher diversity was especially noticeable in rural school systems. But even in larger school districts, which have more racial diversity among students, teachers still tended to be predominantly white and female. (snip)

Statewide, 80 percent of all public school teachers are women and 80 percent are white. Nationally, 77 percent of public school teachers are women and 80 percent are white.

Now, this long, long investigative story will have a part two they investigate diversity and recruitment at North Carolina’s colleges of education and the NC Teaching Fellows program. That is something that’s rather important, along with the idea of “are blacks and Latinos attempting to become teachers in greater numbers, or do they have different educational goals?” We’ll find out Friday.

The reporter received a grant to work on this story. From whom? We aren’t told that, which could put it in context, and why are supposedly independent journalists receiving grants?

“These black boys were dropping out of high school at ridiculous rates,” Tafari said. “And I said, ‘Well, what’s going on? Why is this happening to black boys?’ … And then I realized, well you know what, they don’t see anybody that looks like them. So black boys don’t find education, they don’t find the classroom to be a safe space for them.”

On one hand, this is expected and understandable. On the other hand, if it was about whites wanting to see a white face for a teacher, it would be raaaaacist. Regardless, it’s almost like the people who are making these statements, who are teachers and teacher educators and write books and do research are advocating a segregated school system, not for racist reasons but for learning achievement.

Anyhow, white female teachers, they’re going to be coming after you. Which is rather ironic, since teachers tend to vote overwhelmingly Democratic Party, and are so often SJWs themselves, and the SJWs vote for the same party.

You Need To Stop Pooping To Help Solve ‘Climate Change’ Or Something

Warmists actually sit around and think about this stuff, debate it, investigate it (with taxpayer money, because almost no one else will fund it), and write about it

THE WATER IN YOUR TOILET COULD FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE ONE DAY

DAY AFTER DAY, you pump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, whether you’re driving or turning on lights or eating meat. You can’t help it, because, really, no human can. But I bet you haven’t stopped to think about how the simple act of pooping is also part of the problem: Worldwide, wastewater treatment facilities account for 3 percent of electricity consumption and contribute 1.6 percent of emissions.

A drop in the horrifying bucket that is climate change, you might say. But researchers are beginning to explore how we might tweak wastewater treatment technology to capture CO2 instead of emitting it, as a way to slow the ravages of climate change. If their plan works out, at least our poop can be guilt-free.

Currently, the stuff you flush in the toilet or send down the drain ends up in a facility, along with liquid waste from industries like beer or wine making. All that organic matter sits in open-air tanks where microbes feed on it. They munch on the waste and release CO2 as a byproduct, and the facility then pumps the relatively clean (but far from drinkable) water out to sea.

On its own, a person’s poop is carbon neutral (save for emissions from growing and transporting food): Plants capture carbon from the air by way of photosynthesis, you eat the plants, you produce the carbon as waste. When those microbes eat that waste and release the CO2 back to the atmosphere, it ends up right where it started.

Except that the wastewater treatment facilities need energy to operate. There might be a way to tweak this process, however. Some microbes, like bacteria and microalgae, feed on CO2 itself. “They would eat up the organic carbon and then convert the CO2 into chemicals, for example ethanol,” says Princeton University environmental engineer Zhiyong Jason Ren, who co-authored a recent Nature review of potential carbon capture techniques in wastewater treatment. So one potential fix would be to replace the typical microbes used in wastewater treatment with these CO2-guzzlers. “You treat wastewater but also you reduce CO2into something more valuable.”

Valuable like????? The only thing mentioned is ethanol. Better yet, you could just stop pooping.

This focus on a new marketable product is intentional, to circumvent the biggest hurdle to carbon capture in all its forms: It’s just not profitable. A corporation has no incentive to, say, plant forests or install a carbon-sucking device on its premises if doing so only hurts its finances. Making carbon capture technologies take off will either require legislation to mandate them, a new business opportunity, or both.

Let’s leave it at this: It wouldn’t be the worst thing if our poop helped scrub the atmosphere. It might even be just the place to start.

Your Fault: ‘Climate Change’ Could Maybe Possibly Might Mess With Ratio Of Male-To-Female Babies

Climate change will affect the ratio of male-to-female newborns, scientists say

Global warming will have a variety of effects on our planet, yet it may also directly impact our human biology, research suggests.

Specifically, climate change could alter the proportion of male and female newborns, with more boys born in places where temperatures rise and fewer boys born in places with other environmental changes, such as drought or wildfire caused by global warming.

Wait, is it global warming or climate change?

A recent study in Japan found a link between temperature fluctuations and a lower male-to-female sex ratio at birth, with conceptions of boys especially vulnerable to external stress factors, wrote Dr. Misao Fukuda, lead study author and founder of the M&K Health Institute in Hyogo.

I would have thought this would make the men haters in the far left happy.

Last summer, Fukuda and his colleagues published a separate study looking at births in areas hit by environmental events that caused extreme stress. They included Hyogo Prefecture after the Kobe earthquake of 1995; Tohoku after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 (and subsequent nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daichii power plant); and Kumamoto Prefecture after the 2016 earthquakes.

Nine months after these disasters, the proportion of male babies born in these prefectures declined by between 6% and 14% from the previous year. This data supports the idea that major stress affects gestation, which in turn alters the newborn sex ratio, Fukuda and his co-authors wrote.

None of these have anything to do with changes in the climate, regardless of whether it is mostly/solely man-caused or mostly/solely natural

Stress stemming directly from “climate events caused by global warming” might also affect the sex ratio, Fukuda wrote in an email. Though scientists do not know how stress affects gestation, Fukuda theorizes that the vulnerability of Y-bearing sperm cells, male embryos and/or male fetuses to stress is why “subtle significant changes in sex ratios” occur.

Full stop. So, they have zero idea on the subject, do not have data on this, and are simply prognosticating. And the rest of the story is simply supposition, not science. Surprise?

SCOTUS To Review Restrictive NYC Gun Law

Sticking with both the NY Times and the Supreme Court, we see them taking on an interesting gun control case

Supreme Court Will Review New York City Gun Law

The Supreme Court said on Tuesday that it would review a New York City gun law that limits residents from transporting their guns outside their homes, its first Second Amendment case in nearly a decade and a test of the court’s approach to gun rights after the arrival of Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh in October.

Justice Kavanaugh, who replaced the more moderate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and created a reliable five-member conservative majority, has an expansive view of gun rights. His presence most likely means that the Supreme Court will start exploring and perhaps expanding the scope of the Second Amendment.

“It could be a landmark case with major implications for gun policy,” said Adam Winkler, the author of “Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America.” “The case could articulate broad principles about the Second Amendment, and especially the Second Amendment outside the home.” (snip)

The New York City ordinance challenged in the new case allows residents with so-called premises licenses to take their guns to one of seven shooting ranges within the city limits. But the ordinance forbids them to take their guns anywhere else, including second homes and shooting ranges outside the city, even when they are unloaded and locked in a container separate from ammunition.

Remember, the gun grabbers say they aren’t trying to grab guns, that they do not want to cause problems for the law abiding, they just want to make it harder for criminals to use them. Yet, against and again, we see them pass laws that make it more and more difficult for law abiding citizens to exercise their 2nd Amendment Rights.

Three city residents and the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association sued to challenge the law but lost in Federal District Court in Manhattan and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. A unanimous three-judge panel of the Second Circuit ruled that the ordinance passed constitutional muster under the Heller decision.

In urging the Supreme Court to hear their appeal in the case, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. City of New York, No. 18-280, the challengers said the restrictions imposed by the New York City ordinance were unique in the nation and made no sense.

“Only New York City flatly prohibits its residents from removing their lawfully purchased and duly registered handguns from the city limits, even to transport them (unloaded, and locked up) to second homes at which they are constitutionally entitled to possess them, or to out-of-city shooting ranges or competitions at which they are constitutionally entitled to hone their safe and effective use,” the challengers’ brief said.

On one hand, there needs to be consideration in that the permits were pretty darned specific in laying out scope of the permits and what can and can’t be done, and people went and obtained them in order to have a firearm for home defense. On the other, should there even be a permit which restricts law abiding citizens in this manner, one meant to pass “constitutional muster under the Heller decision” and not a millimeter past it? One made to really subvert the 2nd Amendment rights of law abiding citizens?

Now we wait and see. We might take the gun grabbers talking points about not wanting bad people to have firearms if the vast majority of their rules, regs, and laws were actually aimed at criminals, things like making punishments harsher, instead of at the law abiding.

Supreme Court Votes To Block People With Mental Illness From Serving In Armed Forces For The Time Being

It’s not a hard thing to do to find information on the huge amount of mental illness problems among those who are increasingly calling themselves “transgender”, what is medically termed Gender Dysphoria. Their rates of suicide, being suicidal, and depression are sky high. Add that all the changes they put their bodies through via things like hormones, and they aren’t the best candidates to serve to defend the nation during time of war. Hey, they may be nice people, they may want to serve, but the military shouldn’t be a testing ground for social justice stuff

Supreme Court Revives Transgender Ban for Military Service

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted the Trump administration’s request to allow it to bar most transgender people from serving in the military while cases challenging the policy make their way to the court.

The administration’s policy reversed a 2016 decision by the Obama administration to open the military to transgender service members. It generally prohibits transgender people from military service but makes exceptions for those already serving openly and those willing to serve “in their biological sex.”

The vote to lift two injunctions blocking the policy issued by lower courts was 5 to 4, with the Supreme Court’s five conservative members in the majority.

So, to be clear, this ban is not really a ban, it is an injunction which keeps it in place until such other cases make it to the court. So, of course we’re getting unhinged rants like featured first in the NY Times opinion section, including the web front page

The Supreme Court Just Ended My Military Career

(I’m going to skip past the long recitation of this biological males runup to being gender confused)

No one, including the lawyers for the Trump administration, has been able to show that inclusion of transgender service members or providing care to them has had any measurable negative impact on morale, readiness or unit cohesion. The chiefs of staff of all four service branches of the military have testified to Congress that there have been no issues.

Notice the part about “care for them”. Home many times have we see these gender confused demand that the military pay for their transitions, including operations? And these GC demand that they be allowed to use the same showers, bathrooms, dorms, and such as the opposite biology.

For me, however, it probably marks the end of almost 10 years of trying to find a way to serve my country in uniform again. The court also rejected the administration’s request for a quick hearing on the ban itself, which means at least another year of waiting. By then I will have likely aged out of my eligibility.

If this were through some failing of mine, I could accept it. But it speaks volumes about where we are as a country that the opportunity for many to serve should be denied by the prejudices of a few.

Again, the military doesn’t exist to be a petri dish of discovery. Go join the Peace Corps or something if you want that. I’m not questioning the heart or willingness to fight for these folks, I’m questioning their value and ability to not cause problems.
