Flight 93 Memorial Followup

Yesterday, I discussed NC Rep Charles Taylor blocking money for the Flight 93 Memorial. Lemuel Calhoon of Hillbilly White Trash brings up an interesting point.

The proposed memorial will honor the memory of the hijackers as well as the victims. The thing will be shaped like a giant Islamic crescent. Deal with those problems and I’ll *maybe* think about writing him.

I had forgotten about that, so I went a-searching for the information. First, I started with the original Michelle Malkin article, which pointed out the Red Cresent, which is a symbol of Islam. Entirely innapropriate for the Memorial.

Next, I took a look at the Memorial homepage. Yes, in the picture the trees do almost make a cresent still. However, it has been changed up. First:

Designers of a Flight 93 memorial have made a circular, bowl-shaped piece of land its centerpiece, replacing the original crescent-shape design that some critics had said was a symbol honoring terrorists.

The new design, announced Wednesday by the memorial planning committee, features most of the same details of the original, which was unveiled in September after a worldwide design competition.

A tower with 40 wind chimes will welcome visitors to the crash site near Shanksville. There, they can walk to a large circular field ringed by 40 groves of red and sugar maple trees, symbolizing the 40 passengers and crew who died when hijacked Flight 93 went down on Sept. 11, 2001.

The circle enhances the earlier design by putting more emphasis on the crash site, according to details of the new plan, contained in the Flight 93 National Memorial’s November newsletter. A break in the trees will symbolize the path the plane took.

Second, the name has been changed from the Cresent of Embrace to the Flight 93 Memorial.

Finally, I took a look at what the families are doing. They all seem to be behind the project.

Family members of United Airlines Flight 93 passengers and crew yesterday urged members of Congress to overcome objections from a congressman blocking federal purchase of land for the flight’s memorial in Western Pennsylvania’s Somerset County.

I’m actually a bit disappointed that no one had ever followed up on the original articles to see what happened with the design. However, it looks as if it was changed up, and no longer is including the Islamic references.

Hopefully, Rep Taylor will relent.
