I never said that trump didn’t have classified files at mar a Lago. I said the ones that were shown look like fake ones and I explained that he would not have them laying all over his floor anyhow. So ex-president Trump DID have classified files at his compound? Did the FBI say he had them spread all over the bathroom floor?
He wasn’t president when the FBI raided his place. The US Archives knew he had files there and asked him to return them but he refused multiple times. He may still have files hidden away. He should have returned the files when asked, and that’s what makes his actions different from Bush’s, Obama’s and Biden’s.
Please, please skim through this timeline of the National Archives efforts to retrieve government documents, many of them classified, even Top Secret. If you feel CBS is lying, there are dozens of other sources.
Mr Trump brought all the sturm und drang on himself, which is his wont. It appears he believed he had the right to keep any document he wanted, but ignorance of the law is not an excuse. When first contacted he could have turned the files over with no repercussions, but that’s not his style. Even today, he could plead guilty to the crimes and get a slap on the wrist.
Trump’s attorneys are delaying the case at every turn (which is legal, but costly!) no doubt in hopes he is re-elected and can order the DOJ to stop the process. He is using money from supporters to pay his expenses.
