People’s Republik Of California Sues Fossil Fuels Companies

Don’t expect Gavin Newsome, Attorney General Rob Bonta, the PRC elected officials, or state government employees to stop using fossil fuels themselves. This is more of a cash grab using ‘climate change’ as the backdrop

California sues major oil companies, claiming they deceived on climate change for decades

California sued some of the world’s largest fossil fuel companies on Friday, alleging that they misled consumers for decades about their products’ role in contributing to climate change.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court by Attorney General Rob Bonta, accuses five major oil companies of mounting a “disinformation campaign” beginning in the 1950s to conceal the harm of fossil fuels and delay the transition to a low-carbon future.

“For more than 50 years, Big Oil has been lying to us — covering up the fact that they’ve long known how dangerous the fossil fuels they produce are for our planet,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement ahead of his expected announcement on Sunday during a climate conference in New York. “Wildfires wiping out entire communities, toxic smoke clogging our air, deadly heat waves, record-breaking droughts parching our wells. California taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill.”

Well, now you actually have to prove it, first in a long, long suit in state court, then in federal appeals courts, then to the Supreme Court. And at no time will Gavin et all stop using fossil fuels.

The state has requested a judge order the oil companies to pay into a fund that California would use to finance future climate mitigation and adaptation efforts to protect against pollution and climate change-fueled events.

Told you it was a shakedown.

The targets of the suit are BP, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, ExxonMobil and Shell. The lawsuit also names American Petroleum Institute, an oil industry trade group.

Chevron criticized the lawsuit in a statement Saturday, saying in a statement that the case would have “no constructive or constitutionally permissible role” in changing energy policy.

For the life of me I don’t understand why these companies don’t just say “fine, we won’t sell our products to you.” Would you do business with an entity that was suing you? How much fun would it be if they California government was not being sold fossil fuels, and had to go to the regular gas stations rather than govt depots? Too bad their gas stations cannot refuse to take government credit cards. Could they refuse to serve govt vehicles from fueling? It would be tough.

They should also be highlighting all the fossil fuels the California government purchases, and all the fossil fueled trips Gavin Newsome takes.

California and the Americans there doubtless use more oil company products than any other state. Oil companies are only in business to make money. They make billions in annual profits from California. This was always the greatest fear of the oil companies – that governments would start suing them as they did the tobacco companies. The oil companies know (and knew) their time is coming to an end and they are diversifying to being “Energy Companies”.

Governments (local, state, US, and worldwide) are being forced to spend billions to mitigate the effects of global warming caused by the dying coal industry and oil industy (just as tobacco companies caused lung and other cancers, COPD etc). Since the US Republicans refuse to tax the trillions made by oil companies and their execs, lawsuits are needed.

      Dear Elwood:

” Since the US Republicans refuse to tax the trillions made by oil companies and their execs, lawsuits are needed.”

No. The oil depletion allowance is given in lieu of depreciation allowance of some assets.

      Educate yourself.

  2. Jl says:

“Are being forced to spend billions to mitigate the effects of gw…”. No, they’re not being forced at all, they choose to. And what “effects”? None that can be tied to man’s emissions.
“Refuse to tax trillions..”. Uh, no. Exxon, obviously just one oil company, paid 19.4 billion in taxes with the year ending Jun, 2023. In 2022 20.1 billion was paid. Additionally, when oil company’s gasoline products are purchased billions are immediately put right back into government coffers in the form of federal and state gas taxes, which amount to 80-100 billion a year. This doesn’t include aviation fuel taxes or diesel fuel taxes.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

There is considerable debate over how best to mitigate the effects of the rising seas. Seawalls, while popular (and expensive) don’t address the issues and are losing favor. Coastal cities are now considering giving up part of their urban area to the sea and moving parts of the cities inland.

Even president Trump petitioned a local government in Ireland to upgrade a seawall at a golf club to mitigate the effects of global warming.

Trump… cites global warming and its consequences — increased erosion due to rising sea levels and extreme weather this century — as a chief justification for building the structure.

for consumption by his followers Trump says:

“… he is “not a big believer in global warming.” He has called it “a total hoax,” “bullshit” and “pseudoscience.”

But he is also trying to build a sea wall designed to protect one of his golf courses from “global warming and its effects.”

Oil company customers, not the companies, end up paying the billions in taxes associated with gasoline purchases. The companies make HUNDREDs of billions in PROFITs in a year. Their execs make millions each and pay low tax rates (thanks Reagan!).

But rather than make an argument, links to a youtube video.

Sea level rise at specific locations may be more or less than the global average due to local factors such as land subsidence from natural processes and withdrawal of groundwater and fossil fuels, changes in regional ocean currents, and whether the land is still rebounding from the compressive weight of Ice Age glaciers. In urban settings, rising seas threaten infrastructure necessary for local jobs and regional industries. Roads, bridges, subways, water supplies, oil and gas wells, power plants, sewage treatment plants, landfills—virtually all human infrastructure—is at risk from sea level rise.

We know, we know, that connies are told by their handlers that any and all government agencies (e.g., NOAA, NASA, NSF etc) are lying to you as part of the Great Conspiracy to Rule Them All, and you connies believe what you are told by your handlers.

      • Jl says:

“Make millions and pay low tax rates-thanks Reagan”. They pay the same tax rates that others do making the appropriate same amount of money-strange… Under Reagan, and after, the amount the “rich” paid into the total tax bill actually went up, making America’s tax system even more progressive. Stop me when I get to the bad part that libs shouldn’t like. Funny, that- more rich people means more paying the higher tax rate.
“Customers, not the companies end up paying the taxes..”. No matter who pays them, billions are immediately returned to federal and state governments. Isn’t that what libs want- more taxes paid to governments?
“Mitigate the effect of rising seas…”. Yes, the seas that have been rising for about 20,000 years, with no discernible change in the rate. The mitigation, if needed, would be happening irrespective of any warming

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

The commenter needs to understand that American policies (of both parties) is to have the working class pay more and the rich elites pay less. The commenter knows this yet continues to defend the policies that hurt the working class and rewards wealthy elites. It’s the Republican way.

The rich are getting richer and the working class, poorer.

The commenter no doubt understands that “taxes are the price of civilization”, yet wants the wealthy to continue to accumulate their millions and billions and have the working class pay for “civilization”. Please explain this position.

Previously, a commenter made a silly (and incorrect) argument differentiating the statistical terms “mean” vs “median”. Please discuss why you believe/feel the mean income (and wealth) is increasing faster than the median. https://www.thepiratescove.us/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gifThanks.

STOP PUTTING UP WITH COMMIEFORNIA”S SH*T! DO NOT DELIVER ANOTHER DROP OF FOSIL FUEL INTO THAT STATE! THEY CAN GET THEIRS FROM THE NATIONAL PETROLEUM RESERVES. OOPS: BIDEN HAS ALREADY DRAINED THAT.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

The commies in the Peoples’ Republik of California pay some $240 billion in federal income taxes each year. Add in some $160 billion in payroll taxes. California corporations pay some $80 billion in federal taxes.

There are some 17 oil refineries in CA, so shutting them down could hurt oil company bottom lines. CA has the third highest refining capacity of US states (#1 TX, #2 LA).

Poor red states appreciate the largesse of Californians.

Conservies may not like it, but America needs California.

      • L'Roy White says:

Conservies may not like it, but America needs California.

Democommines may not like it but we non commies need and respect all our states even the ones who show no gratitude or respect for others. You see Elwood, states are made-up of people and we respect people not just those that agree with us. We see value in the rich, the poor, the black, the white, and everybody else. We even see value in people like you who care about no one but yourselves and who listened to no one but your political operatives and your groomers.

With you taking a piss is a political act because it enables you to complain about how many gallons the toilet flushes.

Radical leftists like yourself are psychologically damaged and sadly you spread it all over the country. The result are people like the kids who ran over the guy on a bicycle the other day. You know they’re Democrats and their families are Democrats. You know how we know cause they act like Democrats: no regard for anyone else.

Have you lost any weight lately? Somebody in the 375 pound range really needs to look out for their eating. Sadly winter is coming and you’ll be stuck in the house eating pizzas. It behooves you to quit worrying about Trump’s weight and worry about your own. You are morbidly obese and when you combine that with ugly you make a blurry poor specimen.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

          White,

White typed: we non commies need and respect all our states even the ones who show no gratitude or respect for others

          LOL. What a laugh!! https://www.thepiratescove.us/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yahoo.gif

You never have anything of substance to type. Why is that? We all know you’re a big fake, White.

I’ll be in NJ in a couple of weeks. Wanna meet up, White? LOL. Only 30 min from Camden, where you claim to live. You ever been to Donkey’s Place, White?

  4. ruralcounsel says:

Legal counsel for the oil companies should remember the arguments in this lawsuit, so when they turn around and sue the State for misleading the public about climate change for decades.

“In my opinion, to demand a remedy for a ‘catastrophic’ product, while at the same time not demanding that remedy include a cessation of supply, is an utter absurdity which should be treated with the contempt it deserves”. Eric Worrall

  6. Jl says:

“And have the working class pay for civilization..” What? No matter how many times you guys say that doesn’t make it true. The bottom 50% of wage earners pay 3% of the total fed income tax bill, the top 1% pay about 40% of the total bill. Sorry, but still one of the most progressive tax systems in the free world
