GOP Convention Theme “We Built This!”

They should keep the theme going the entire convention

(Fox News) The GOP is turning what some see as a presidential slight aimed at business owners and entrepreneurs into a theme for a night of the Republican National Convention next week, titling Tuesday night’s session “We Built This!”

Speeches from a trio of swing-state headliners will be on the agenda as Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., Gov. John Kasich, R-Ohio and Gov. Bob McDonnell, R-Va. take the convention stage.

An RNC official tells FOX News Tuesday’s schedule also includes a speech by Sher Valenzeula, a Latina candidate for Lieutenant Governor in Delaware. Her campaign website notes she and her husband started an upholstery business that makes padding for baseball umpires and military vests worn by members of the Israeli military.

Tuesday is the second night of the convention. You can bet that Obama’s “you didn’t build this” will be featured during many speeches on other nights, too.

So, How Awesome Is Renewable Energy?

Jo Nova explains

In June this year the UNEP report announced that Global Renewable Energy investment reached $257 Billion in  2011. It’s so large it rivals the $302 billion invested in fossil fuel power. But how much electricity do we get for all that money? When the details are pulled from the fog, a quarter of a trillion dollars appears to produce only about 3% of all our global electricity, and even less of our global energy. All that money, so few gigawatts.

She then goes through many of the tricks to make alternatives appear to be working better than they really are, including adding hydro-power into the mix. Remember, enviroweenies want hydro-electric damns torn down for a variety of reasons.

I’m not against alternative energy methods: I just want to see them done in a way that makes sense, and provide electricity at a low cost. Furthermore, we shouldn’t be limiting our current power with old school “dirty” methods till they can be replaced sensibly.

Vet Detained On Psych Hold For Facebook Posts

Big brother is watching

(Fox News) A former Marine involuntarily detained for psychiatric evaluation for posting strident anti-government messages on Facebook has received an outpouring of support from people who say authorities are trampling on his First Amendment rights.

Brandon J. Raub, 26, has been in custody since FBI, Secret Service agents and police in Virginia’s Chesterfield County questioned him Thursday evening about what they said were ominous posts talking about a coming revolution. In one message earlier this month according to authorities, Raub wrote: “Sharpen my axe; I’m here to sever heads.”

Police — acting under a state law that allows emergency, temporary psychiatric commitments upon the recommendation of a mental health professional — took Raub to the John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell. He was not charged with any crime.

Raub is a little nutty, being a big 9/11 Truther and talking about arresting government officials. He’s way, way, way out there libertarian, and wrote a bunch of stuff along those lines. But, apparently his Facebook site was closed to the general public

A Virginia-based civil liberties group, The Rutherford Institute, dispatched one of its attorneys to the hospital to represent Raub at a hearing Monday. A judge ordered Raub detained for another month, Rutherford executive director John Whitehead said.

“For government officials to not only arrest Brandon Raub for doing nothing more than exercising his First Amendment rights but to actually force him to undergo psychological evaluations and detain him against his will goes against every constitutional principle this country was founded upon,” Whitehead said.

If it could happen to Raub, it could happen to anyone.

The big concern, Whitehead said, is whether government officials are monitoring citizens’ private Facebook pages and detaining people with whom they disagree.

As mentioned, his Facebook page was private. Supposedly, people made complaints to Los Federales. Raub is on a 30 day hold for a psychiatric evaluation. For what are apparently thought crimes against the government.

I don’t agree with his views, but, no one should be detained for simply expressing an opinion like this.

Feminists Hit DNC Over Anti-Women Policies For Convention

The DNC is apparently not too willing to spread their own money around to help out mom’s in attendance at this years shortened Democratic National Convention

(Politico) A number of local chapters of the National Organization for Women are denouncing the DNC convention rules, saying that they unfairly exclude mothers with young children.

“Women are the key to a Democratic victory, and sometimes, children are the key to women. It’s both right and smart for the Democratic Convention to behave as if children exist,” activist Gloria Steinem said in a release.

The group of southern California chapters of NOW are pointing to the lack of childcare at the conventions, as well as the difficulty female delegates have in bringing children to the convention floor. According to the activists, the DNC is requiring young children to have credentials to come onto the convention floor with their parents.

“Moms with young children 6 years of age and under who cannot be left at home, some of whom are breastfeeding, are relegated to second-class status within the Democratic Convention, unable to participate as a delegate due to antiquated policies and inadequate accommodations that were apparently in place before Women’s suffrage,” Susie Shannon, a delegate to the 2012 DNC Convention.

“The DNC requires children and babies to have a credential to enter the Convention, and then denies these credential requests from moms. The DNC credentialing process is being used as a tool to prevent mothers from participating at the Convention and is nothing short of discriminatory,” said Lindsey Horvath, president of the Hollywood NOW.

Why do Democrats hate women? And, hey, wait a minute, why are women, children, and babies required to *gasp* show their papers? This is obviously a discriminatory policy designed to intimidate those women who want to attend the DNC, and reducing them to servants of the patriarchy. In fact, a “standard government ID” is required for attendance for all!

The DNC has stated that there is a list of private childcare companies available. For a fee. Because Dems aren’t willing to use their own money.

The Akin Issue: Don’t Drop Out

I know, everyone is going “ugh” regarding the mostly dumb comments from Missouri GOP Senatorial candidate (and current Representative) Todd Akin. Here’s what I wrote in the comments over at Michelle Malkin’s spot

Perhaps Republicans shouldn’t be so quick to dump our candidates in front of a bus for saying something stupid. It seems that so often we say we’re going to stay strong, but, the minute a Republican looks bad, we rush out to placate the liberal media and Democrats instead of circling the wagons, making the GOP look weak. Who wants to run Republican when they know we won’t have their back?

The liberal media and Democrats do circle the wagons, no matter how bad the comment or action. Cheating on/not paying taxes? Also known as criminal violations of the law? Democrats and lib media circle the wagons.

Make an offensive statement? Circle the wagons.

Call Americans “teabaggers” and bitter clingers? Circle the wagons.

Target private citizens? Circle.

Have a former high ranking member of the KKK? Hell, keep electing him and make him majority leader for a time.

The list goes on.

Akin didn’t break the law. He said something dumb. We should give him our support. You want dumb? Claire McCaskill voted for Stimulus and Obamacare, much worse. Let’s not forget that Claire “forgot” to pay almost $300k in taxes for her plane.

You have many Republicans calling for him to give it up. Sean Hannity sounded like he wanted Akin to abandon his campaign earlier on the radio. Republicans and Crossroads GPS have apparently pulled out. National Review has called on Akin to step aside. So does Scott Brown. And John Cornyn. Many Republicans and Conservatives have gone all squishy as they so often due in the face of adversity.

Fortunately, some are standing up for Akin, such as social conservatives (of which I’ve been critical in the past). This is what we should all be doing. To be impolite and risk alienation, Republicans need to grow a spine. Akin is up 11 over McCaskill. Go on the offensive, bring up her Obamacare and Stimulus votes (among others), and highlight her “forgetting” to pay her taxes while demonizing “rich” people. For f*ck’s sake, you have a president who is quick to insult American citizens, especially Conservatives, and often in a nasty way. He called Americans lazy and soft. He said Americans “aren’t thinking clearly.” I could go on and on and on. Who will you replace Akin with? Bueller? Bueller? You replace him now and it is a guaranteed loss.

Buck up and stand up.

PS: Akin has a lifetime rating with the American Conservative Union of 97.24. He’s been helpful way more than hurtful. Maybe this is the kind of Conservative we need.

Double PS: I’m sorry if that sounded a bit angry, but, that’s because I am. Akin apologized, and not the “I’m sorry if you were offended” type. Let’s stop hitting our folks with the big shiny bus for one screwup.

Senator Inhofe Needles Obama On Globull Warming

In all fairness, Obama is still pushing “green” energy funding, but, let’s face it, he’s pretty much abandoned anything to do with “climate change”, and most of those loans are payback to campaign contributors

(Human Events) It has been a long time since we heard the term “global warming” from the mainstream media and the environmental left—but now that we’re experiencing a hot summer, we’re back to the good old days, as the left tries to drum up the hysteria they once enjoyed.

Over the past few weeks, I had the chance to welcome my alarmist friends back to the discussion about global warming: we’ve heard news reports with headlines proclaiming this summer is “what global warming looks like” and Senators Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) have all jumped to blame the recent heat, droughts, and—in Sen. Reid’s case—even the cherry blossoms blossoming early in Washington, D.C. on man-made global warming.

When the weather is hot, according to them, we have proof of global warming. But this is a dangerous game to play because once it turns cold, they will go right back to saying it’s climate change not global warming, weather is not climate, and that freezing temperatures are consistent with an overheating planet. (big snip)

Now that the global warming movement has completely collapsed, President Barack Obama never dares to mention it. It must be very hard for my friends on the left to watch the president who promised he would slow the rise of the oceans posing in front of pipelines in my home state of Oklahoma pretending to support oil and gas.

Interestingly, most of the overheating planet talk from the US media has dried up since, as Joe Bastardi points out, the country is actually rather cool this month, and needles Bill McKibben. (via Tom Nelson)

Most of the rest of the world didn’t experience a heat wave this summer. Most were cool. For what, the 4th or 5th straight year the eastern hemisphere, especially Europe, western Asia, the Middle East, and Northern Africa, the winter was devastating. The southern hemisphere is having a really cold winter. It’s been almost 2500 days since a Category 3 or higher hurricane hit the US mainlaind. Almost 4 years since any hurricane hit the US mainland (Irene was not a hurricane during either US landfall). Tornado numbers are down this summer. What is happening is weather during a typical (mostly) natural warm period. It’s really time to move on to some other hysterical issue, Warmists. Even your president has abandoned you.

Obama: The Trash Talking President

Over at The Politico, Glenn Thrush discusses the newly released ebook “The Last Stand”

President Barack Obama’s campaign team, celebrated four years ago for its exceptional cohesion and eyes-on-the-prize strategic focus, has been shadowed this time by a succession of political disagreements and personal rivalries that haunted the effort at the outset. (big snip)

The e-book, produced as part of a two-month reporting project that included interviews with two dozen current and former members of Obama’s team, illuminates how the mood and character of the 2012 reelection effort is flowing from the top — with Obama’s own personality and values shaping his campaign just as powerfully as he did four years ago.

And what are those values?

Obama’s trash-talking competitiveness, a trait that has defined him since his days on the court as a basketball-obsessed teenager in Hawaii, was on display one night last February, when the president spotted a woman he knew was close to Sen. Marco Rubio in a Florida hotel lobby. “Is your boy going to go for [vice president]?” the president asked her. Maybe, she replied.

“Well,” he said, chuckling, according to a person who witnessed the encounter. “Tell your boy to watch it. He might get his ass kicked.”

We all know what he meant, but, if a Republican had referred to a minority as “boy”, there would have been massive charges of racism and/or bigotry.

Anyhow, what the article, and ebook, show is a petty, petulant, nasty man who takes everything intensely personal. He’s snappy, angry, and rude. He personally hates Mitt Romney. And he surrounds himself with petty, petulant, and nasty people. Welcome to Hope and Change.

BTW, You Really Don’t Need To Worry About Prophesies Of Doom And Gloom

Writing over at Wired, Matt Ridley exposes the constantly litany of enviroweenie/Warmist prognostications of doooooooom, along with other end of the world as we know it crazies (via Climate Depot)

Apocalypse Not: Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Worry About End Times

When the sun rises on December 22, as it surely will, do not expect apologies or even a rethink. No matter how often apocalyptic predictions fail to come true, another one soon arrives. And the prophets of apocalypse always draw a following—from the 100,000 Millerites who took to the hills in 1843, awaiting the end of the world, to the thousands who believed in Harold Camping, the Christian radio broadcaster who forecast the final rapture in both 1994 and 2011.

Religious zealots hardly have a monopoly on apocalyptic thinking. Consider some of the environmental cataclysms that so many experts promised were inevitable. Best-selling economist Robert Heilbroner in 1974: “The outlook for man, I believe, is painful, difficult, perhaps desperate, and the hope that can be held out for his future prospects seem to be very slim indeed.” Or best-selling ecologist Paul Ehrlich in 1968: “The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s [“and 1980s” was added in a later edition] the world will undergo famines—hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked on now … nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate.” Or Jimmy Carter in a televised speech in 1977: “We could use up all of the proven reserves of oil in the entire world by the end of the next decade.”

Predictions of global famine and the end of oil in the 1970s proved just as wrong as end-of-the-world forecasts from millennialist priests. Yet there is no sign that experts are becoming more cautious about apocalyptic promises. If anything, the rhetoric has ramped up in recent years. Echoing the Mayan calendar folk, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved its Doomsday Clock one minute closer to midnight at the start of 2012, commenting: “The global community may be near a point of no return in efforts to prevent catastrophe from changes in Earth’s atmosphere.”

Over the five decades since the success of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring in 1962 and the four decades since the success of the Club of Rome’s The Limits to Growth in 1972, prophecies of doom on a colossal scale have become routine. Indeed, we seem to crave ever-more-frightening predictions—we are now, in writer Gary Alexander’s word, apocaholic. The past half century has brought us warnings of population explosions, global famines, plagues, water wars, oil exhaustion, mineral shortages, falling sperm counts, thinning ozone, acidifying rain, nuclear winters, Y2K bugs, mad cow epidemics, killer bees, sex-change fish, cell-phone-induced brain-cancer epidemics, and climate catastrophes.

Yet, all these things have not come to pass: they world hasn’t descended into a Mel Gibson apocalyptic Mad Max society. As Matt rightly points out, yes, there are problems, some solvable, some not, but they aren’t going to doom the planet. In fact, these absurd, over the top, hysterical, we’re all dooooooomed!!!!! type prognostications usually end up with policy prescriptions that are worse than the original issue, which wasn’t all that bad to start with. Matt mentions, in the final paragraph, how the push for biofuels leads to environmental degradation and clear-cutting of forests of all stripes, increasing the release of CO2 and causing hunger and poverty. Consider Palm Oil.

Palm oil is used for more than just biofuels: it’s often used for cooking. Girls who participate in the Girl Scouts have been trying for years to get the national organization to stop using the oil in their cookies. Why? Because forests are decimated to create land to farm the palm oil, which kills off the life. In many cases, hunters are paid to intentionally kill off all the wildlife, especially orangutans. But, it’s really the use of palm oil as a biofuel that is driving this environmental destruction. Thanks, Warmists! Every orangutan killed is on your conscience.

Australian Climate Madness has a great take on what happens with all these scary predictions

What’s the betting that climate alarmism will eventually be relegated to the dustbin of failed environmental scares? They all have several things in common:

  • an element of reality, which can be large or small;
  • which in each case is elevated to a full-blown scare;
  • by activists, who are usually driven by emotional, political, financial or other non-scientific motives;
  • the scare will command wall-to-wall media coverage, often for many years;
  • eventually, however, possibly decades later, it will be shown to have been exaggerated;
  • followed by a collective wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth from those in power;
  • and the public becomes ever more cynical and untrusting of such prophesies in the future.

Unfortunately, these over the top harbingers can cause damage for decades. It’s been 50 years since the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, and the deaths of tens of millions of humans lie at her feet thanks to the banning (sometimes outright bans, sometimes it’s “if you use it, you won’t get any of our sweet, sweet foreign aid money”) of the use of DDT. (See The Green Death and The Lies Of Rachel Carson)

Of course, the most interesting part about the extreme environmental and Warmist movements is that they never seem to worry about these things enough to change their own behavior. They don’t give up fossil fuels, they aren’t unplugging every appliance when not in use, they still use air conditioners, and, oh, “there’s a slight chance of contracting West Nile virus in my area? Let’s spray to stop it! Who cares if that messes up the food chain!”
