Nope, not the Islamic jihadis, climate change, because a desert nation that’s been a desert nation for a long, long, long time is threatened with become a ….. desert nation (and it obviuosly has nothing whatsoever to do with nature, plate tectonics, etc)

(Toronto Star) When dictator Moammar Gadhafi was killed in October 2011, months after the first wave of uprisings swept Libya as part of the larger Arab Spring, international analysts declared the North African country finally free.

But two years later, there are ethnic and tribal tensions and parts of the country are overrun by armed militia and religious hardliners.

Another significant challenge is from climate change, according to an essay in “The Arab Spring and Climate Change,” a study recently published by three think-tanks in Washington.

If the new government does not address the issue of water shortages, Libya could see more turmoil, Francesco Femia and Caitlin Werrell write in their essay, which examines Libya’s water and desertification problems.

Feedreaders: Anyone Know A Good One Yet?

I’m sure you’ve heard about Google saying they will shut down Google Reader come July. Which sucks. Which is also silly, because way fewer people use Google+ (yes, it is still active.) So, I need a new reader by then.

So far, Bloglines, Feed Reader, Feedly, Netvibe, and so many others are failing. Most are not updating promptly. Now, that could be due to the influx of new users. Have to try them in a month or so.

Most do not sort alphabetically. With Bloglines and Netvibe (virtually one and the same), I can manually move the links around to be alphabetical.

What I need is one that is almost real time. Like Google Reader does. That’s a must have. And I’d like one that can be linked to an Android app, but that is not a must have, just a like to have. I’d prefer one that is web based.

Without a good reader, I can tell you that my Sunday Pinup post will end, at least with all the links, because it would go from an hour,   hour and a half tops to 2-3 hours or more.

Any good ideas?

Report: No Statistical Global Warming In 17 Years

As the new Marcott paper is still being hyped by the media, but being destroyed by actual scientists digging into the paper (including Marcott), we learn some interesting information

(GWPF) London,  15 March: A new report written by Dr David Whitehouse and published today by the Global Warming Policy Foundation concludes that there has been no statistically significant increase in annual global temperatures since 1997.

After reviewing the scientific literature the report concludes that the standstill is an empirical fact and a reality that challenges current climate models. During the time that the Earth’s global temperature has remained static the atmospheric composition of carbon dioxide has increased from 370 to 390 ppm.

“The standstill is a reality and is not the result of cherry-picking start and end points. Its commencement can be seen clearly in the data, and it continues to this day,” said Dr David Whitehouse, the author of the new report.

What this report is not saying is that the Earth is not currently in a warm period. As part of the natural cycle during the Holocene, it gets cool, it gets warm, it gets cool, it gets warm, and during the cool and warm long term periods there will be shorter warm and cool periods.

Right now, the Earth is in an elevated warm period during this extended warm period (which started in the mid-1800’s as the Little Ice Age came to an end) which is still cooler than during the previous warm periods (Medieval and Roman warm periods), with a flatlined temperature gradient.

What the report is saying is that if CO2 was the main forcing agent, global temperatures should be rising. They aren’t.

“If the standstill continues for a few more years it will mean that no one who has just reached adulthood, or younger, will have witnessed the Earth get warmer during their lifetime,” said the report’s author, Dr David Whitehouse.

This doesn’t mean that we won’t see more warming during this climate period which is called….hey, why do we have no name for it yet? I propose calling it the “things are so awesome that hysterics have time to whine about the weather instead of having to bust their humps in the mud from sun-up to bed-time” period. It’s a bit long, granted.

Surprise! Colorado Big Gun Magazine Bill Could Ban Almost All Mags

Unintentional mistake in intentional “bug”?

(Daily Caller) Colorado Democratic Rep. Rhonda Fields, whose bill to ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 15 rounds ignited an ongoing firestorm of protest and which could cost the state jobs if a manufacturer of such equipment makes good on its promise to move to another state, didn’t realize that her bill would outlaw practically every magazine currently for sale in the state.

That’s because the bill specifies that magazines that can be “readily converted” to hold more than 15 bullets will also be outlawed.

Practically every magazine on the market can be easily converted with readily available extenders, as demonstrated in a video posted by John Caldera, the president of the libertarian Independence Institute.

Remember, Democrats tell is that this is all “common sense legislation that targets criminals, not law abiding citizens.” You know, those criminals who fail to follow the law.

Fields told 9News that she had no idea her bill would effectively ban nearly all magazines with removable base plates for which extenders are made.

“I’m just hearing about that now,” she told the news station. “Our focus was on the number of bullets you can put in a magazine.”

And there’s the follow of activists and hysterics writing legislation that they fail to understand in order to Do Something.

She said still supports the bill as drafted.

“I’m not envisioning changing that because of a little plate that you can pull out,” she said. “I’m hoping that people will just comply with the law.”

So, as the flaw is pointed out she states “nope, not making any changes”. She expects law abiding citizens not to purchase these magazines, which, by the law, would be most. Criminals will thumb their noses at her. Those who own them now can keep them, but cannot transfer them to anyone, including family members. They would have to be given to The Government upon death or selling the gun, which means that no one will really want to buy a gun with no magazines.

It would be a Class 2 Misdemeanor to possess (if not owned prior to July 1, 2013), sell or transfer magazines over 15 rounds after July 1, 2013.

15 round magazine? People safe in Colorado

16 round magazine? People in EXTREME DANGER in Colorado.

Lindsay Grahamnesty Offers Surprising Idea For Immigration

Well, surprising if you know his super squishy history regarding immigration

(UPI) Senators are mulling making it harder for U.S. citizens to get visas for family members while easing the path for high-skilled foreign workers, a senator said.

“We’re going to change fundamentally the immigration system,” including tighter limits on family visas, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told The Washington Post.

“Right now you get green cards to adult children, to grandparents,” Graham said. “What I want to do is reserve green cards based on the economic needs of the country, and we’ll do something for families. But the goal for me is to replace a chained-migration immigration system with an economic-based immigration system.”

This is a great idea, as it would mean fewer soon-to-be on government services immigrants, but people who actually bring skills and, yes, earnings potential. And less chance to overstay their visas. Obviously, Democrats do not like this

In the Senate discussions, Republicans would prefer to admit larger numbers of highly skilled workers, who would provide an immediate economic benefit and who business leaders say are in short supply, while Democrats generally want to give priority to family members of citizens and legal residents already in the country.

Krugman Wants Climate Realists Punished In The Afterlife

Yeah, this is the same guy who owns a massive McMansion with a giant “carbon footprint” as he pushes for Other People to be forced onto mass transit

(NY Times) And the thing is that these are externalities that everyone can see. You can deny global warming (and may you be punished in the afterlife for doing so — this kind of denial for petty personal or political reasons is an almost inconceivable sin). But can anyone deny that more drivers means more traffic congestion?

Well, maybe I’m understating the power of denial. But still, this is a totally obvious case for government intervention that’s staring us in the face every time we hit the road.

Gotta love that civil tone, wishing pain and agony on people who fail to share the climate astrologer’s point of view. Oh, and notice how Krugman’s rant morphs into wishing for more fascistic government?

Obama To Take Fossil Fueled Flight To Propose Program To Eliminate Fossil Fuels

Once again he’s on the campaign trail for his “green energy” meme

(Washington Post) The pitch President Obama will make as he visits the Energy Department’s Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago Friday involves a bit of policy jujutsu: let’s take the money we make by producing oil to stop using it altogether.

Sequester? What Sequester? It costs $180k an hour to run Air Force One. The six hour round trip flight (to make a quick speech, shake a few hands, ask for some campaign donations, and then boogie back to D.C.) will cost over a million dollars, which could fund White House tours for 15 weeks. He couldn’t make the announcement on the grounds of the White House?

Obama will call for the establishment of the Energy Security Trust, a $2 billion fund over 10 years that takes some of the federal royalties the government receives from offshore oil and gas leasing to invest in research that will shift the country’s transportation sector away from using oil.

The White House selected Argonne because the lab did some of the breakthrough research into advanced battery technology back in the 1990s, before there was a commercial market for such things. Establishing a fund that will not be subject to the uncertainties of the annual appropriations cycle, said a White House aide who asked not to be identified in advance of the president’s appearance, will provide “a reliable stream of funding for critical breakthrough research” in the transportation sector.

In other words, a way to hook up Democrat donors with federal tax money not subject to the annual appropriations cycle, just like with 80% of the allocated Stimulus funds.

The goal, the aide continued, is to “ultimately get our cars and trucks off of oil.”

Yet, Obama will take yet another unnecessary fossil fueled flight, first on Marine One to Andrews, then on Air Force 1, followed by a trip in a fossil fueled limo surrounded by lots of fossil fueled SUVs, make a speech, followed by fossil fueled cars and trucks, then fossil fueled plane trip and helicopter trip. It’s good to be the king.

Politico Wonders “What’s The Future For Sarah Palin?”

Sarah Palin is one of the headliners at CPAC this year, with a big speech scheduled for Saturday. But, does she have a future in politics, or has she become, as Politico puts it, another Kardashian type figure, famous for being famous?

In January 2009, Sarah Palin had the world on a string. A potential Republican presidential field-clearer for the presidency, every sentence she uttered was news. A Fox News contract awaited her. So did book deals.

Four years later, Palin is without a clear option for elected office – or a clear sense she has an interest in any position of real public influence. She never took an active, leadership role in the tea party movement, beyond showing up at a scattered handful of events and talking it up on television. For many Americans, her name is now primarily a punchline and if she is envisioning a comeback, it may simply be too late.

You probably know by now that I am not a big fan of Sarah anymore, after being a huge supporter even before she was picked to be John McCain’s running mate (it was more like “mccain-PALIN”). That said, that part about her showing up at scattered events and having no leadership is rather disingenuous, as she was a huge force behind the historic 2010 midterms beat down of the Democrats. After that, though, it was flirting with running for president, then saying nope, then really not doing a whole lot to help the Republican candidates win in 2012, especially Romney.

Is it too late for a comeback? Reagan did it. Heck, Joe Biden did it. Others have. How many times did Lincoln run and lose? Of course, there’s the problem: she doesn’t run, and she needs to.

But as a force within the party, Palin has gone from sixty to zero within the span of a single presidential cycle.

“There was a ton of potential there, and it’s conceivable that there could be a second act, but it’s a little hard to see it now,” said Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, who championed Sarah from Alaska as a potential VP pick in 2008 for Sen. John McCain.

“She didn’t run, obviously, in 2012, and she hasn’t really made herself a leader on any particular issue,” added Kristol, arguing that one either needs to hold office or make themselves relevant on an issues front . “Usually you have to do one of those things…otherwise you’re just another pundit.”

She can get out there and excite the base with a speech. Her Facebook posts tend to trend. But there’s nothing sustained anymore. What are her positions? I hate to put it this way, but she’s much like Michael Moore and Al Gore. Once a huge force for Liberals, Moore and Gore now are mostly invisible, popping up every once in a while. Then fading out again.

Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer argued she has as much of a chance of a second act as Joe Biden managed after being “laughed out of the race” in 1988 amid a plagiarism scandal.

However, he added, “Her act as a celebrity is done. Her act as a political figure is possible – if she applies herself.”

Others in the article discuss the celebrity factor. Palin has to decide what she wants to do. Be an occasional pundit, or be a force. To be a force, she needs to run, and win, a federally elected position. I maintain she should have run for the Senate. She still could. And should. But, is it too late?
