Flashback: How Big Is Obama’s “Carbon Footprint”?

As Obama gets set to announce all sorts of executive actions regarding, more specifically, existing coal power plants, which will artificially increase the cost of energy and cost of living for Americans, with middle and lower class citizens hit the hardest, let’s jump back to 2009 where Red, Green, and Blue calculated Obama’s carbon footprint

Due to the difficulty in obtaining specific data about the White House and the President’s travel detail, certain assumptions have been made which are documented after the main body of the article. These assumptions were kept conservative, yet realistic, and documented facts (such as airplane specifications and carbon emission factors) were used wherever possible.

An important consideration of a carbon footprint assessment is the boundaries – in other words ‘What is included?’ We have included the following items in the carbon footprint calculation:

  1. Airplane Travel (all flights associated with a Presidential trip, including official Air Force 1 and alternate Air Force 1, military cargo planes, and advance security missions)
  2. Helicopter Travel
  3. Automobile Travel
  4. White House electricity and natural gas use

We have not included the emissions related to: the Inauguration ceremony, maintenance of Camp David, maintenance of other personal property owned by the President, maintenance of the approximately 18 acres of White House grounds.

As RGandB points out, this could apply to all presidents. Yet, none of them are pushed all this “climate change” silliness like Obama. None made it a big deal during their campaigns. Anyhow, what’s the conclusion?

Using our set of assumptions*, the carbon footprint of the President is about 41,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year. This is the equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of about 2200 American households. This also far exceeds the carbon footprint of any of the European leaders, largely due to the number of additional airplane trips that accompany the President when he travels to provide the necessary security for the Commander in Chief.

The average CF for Americans is 19.78 metric tons (no one has really done a big study since 2006, so that number might have dropped, especially with the recession that Obama has kept going). The world average was just under 4 tons. And here’s Obama with 41,000 tons.

Now, people will say “hey, he’s the POTUS, he has Stuff To Do!” Like taking long fossil fueled flights with all the limos and SUVs in order to give 30 minute campaign speeches. He’s made no attempt to reduce his own footprint, and has seemingly increased it tremendously.

Rich SecState Takes Fossil Fueled Flight To India To Complain About Fossil Fuels

If Obama wanted a Secretary of State whose primary focus was “Climate change”, he picked the right one in John Kerry, a true disciple of Gore and Mann, who cares little for science, and ignores the 15+ year pause in warming, ignores that most climate models fail, and is an utter climahypocrite

(NY Times) Secretary of State John Kerry urged India on Sunday to begin to address climate change by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases even as it attempts to bring electricity to tens of millions of its citizens now living without it.

“I do understand and fully sympathize with the notion that India’s paramount commitment to development and eradicating poverty is essential,” Mr. Kerry said in a speech at the start of a two-day visit. “But we have to recognize that a collective failure to meet our collective climate challenge would inhibit all countries’ dreams of growth and development.”

Um, wait, what? Did he just say that fighting Hotcoldwetdry is more important than lifting people out of poverty? Yes. Yes he did.

In an effort to prod the Indians to act, Mr. Kerry warned that climate change could cause India to endure excessive heat waves, prolonged droughts, intense flooding and shortages of food and water.

India, because of their geography, has been putting up with those pretty much since the Indian plate slammed into the Asian plate.

“The worst consequences of the climate crisis will confront people who are the least able to be able to cope with them,” he said.

But, if they build a few solar farms, wind turbine farms, and crops for ethanol (all which require massive amounts of land and defoliation), poor, starving people in India might get enough power to….well, they don’t actually have any appliances to need power, because they’re really poor. But, these kinds of 1st World measures will make people like John Kerry Feel Good about themselves.

Experts said at the time that such an effort would not be successful without the participation of India, where the use of refrigeration and air-conditioning is growing rapidly.

Well, some do have AC and refrigeration, which tend to be Good Things, especially that refrigeration, which allows food to be kept longer instead of spoiling. 1st Worlders like Kerry, who already have plenty of homes with AC and fridges, aren’t happy that 2nd/3rd worlders would like the same.

I know that India is well aware of the grave threat that this global crisis poses. Yours is already one of the most severely affected nations. And unfortunately, the worst consequences of the climate crisis will confront people who are the least able to be able to cope with them. And I emphasize the imperative for us is to act forcefully and cooperatively on climate change, not because it’s about ideology, but because it is about science. And here in India, the home of so much of the history of science, we must recognize that today the science of climate change is screaming at us for action.

Yet, he still took a long fossil fueled flight to India. A standard economy flight from DC to India puts out a bit over 2 metric tons of CO2. Anyone think Kerry flew economy class? The average “carbon footprint” in India is 1.16 metric tons. Anyone else see the hypocrisy?

Support For Amnesty Bill Supposedly Snowballs Ahead Of Today’s Scheduled Vote

(The Hill) Immigration reform has gotten a new burst of life as a growing number of Senate Republicans have embraced the 1,000-page-plus legislation, setting up President Obama for a big victory this week. [WATCH VIDEO]

The sudden surge in Republican support has been a pleasant surprise for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who urged the bill’s authors to focus on winning 60 votes — the minimum for passing it.

Instead, Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.), the leaders of the Gang of Eight, are marching toward 70 votes, a target intended to put maximum pressure on the House to act.

We know that, no matter what reservations any Democrats have, they will vote in lockstep for this bill (the original was 844 pages. The Corker-Hoeven amendment is 1187 pages. Think any, other than those opposed, read them?). They know that the legalization will begin immediately, that all the border control measures will be ignored (or discarded during the next Congress after the GOP loses the House and more Senate seats if this thing becomes law), that the illegals will surely get federal benefits no matter what the bill says, and that the Dems will agitate for voting rights for those with provisional legal status, if not for 2014, then 2016.

The question is “how many Republicans vote for this bill?”, a bill that would effectively kill the GOP. Will Rubio vote for his own turdburger? He’s already destroyed his brand with Conservatives, who, regardless of his vote, will not vote or support Rubio if he runs in 2016.

Sessions said Republican support for the Corker-Hoeven amendment could wane as senators learn more of its details.

He noted the legislation would not require the full deployment of 20,000 additional border patrol agents until 2021 and would let Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano dispense with the fence-building requirement if she judges it unnecessary.

“If people find out this amendment does not accomplish what the sponsors believe it does, I think the bill could be back in trouble again,” he said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

It will pass, but what happens in the House afterwards? Does it even get a vote? Does it go to Committee to die? Does the House take it and seriously strengthen it? We’ll seen soon.

Watcha Reading?

Finished up Lycan Fallout: Rise of the Werewolf by one of my favorite authors, Mark Tufo. Super awesome, as usual. Now I’m jonesing for the sequel. Want now!!!!!

I also mentioned I wanted to read Casino Infernale by Simon Green but wouldn’t pay $12.99 for it. Managed to get it from the library (Wake County has an incredible library system. Hey, government does do some things well). Not as good as his usual ones, but, then, his books are so good that it can be tough to keep it kicked up to 10. It was a quick read, but glad I didn’t spend the money on it. Still worth the read if you’re a Simon Green fan.

Ah, but if you think that’s the end of reading during the week (I was mostly done with Lycan Fallout at time of posting last Sunday), no! I also read Dead Drunk: Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse….One Beer At A Time by Richard Johnson. I picked it up when it was free, it’s now $4.99. It would be worth it if you like zombie books. Fun characters with lots of flaws and lots of alcohol. Fart and poop jokes. Think about what would happen if you were stuck with a bunch of friends during the zombie apocalypse. And it would be worse with a bunch of guys stuck together. With alcohol. Little food but tins of cat food. Hopefully there will be a follow up.

Aaaaaaand, yes, another book: Zombie Maelstrom by Bryan Cassiday. The 3rd book in the series, Sanctuary in Steel was free, but had to get the 1st to get it all going. So far so good. I like the way it progresses and though the character development is light, it has that “this can happen feel”.

Also, as I’ve mentioned for the past few weeks, I’ve also been slowly reading The Mad, Mad, Mad World Of Climatism. I finally finished it, and will provide a longer review/synopsis on my next day off, so as not to rush it, but, let me say that this should be the one book that every Warmist, and those on the fences, should read. Heck, even if you do not buy into “climate change”, you should read it. The facts and figures, along with the history, of “climate change” is put in an excellent format that anyone can easily understand. I should finish it this week, not that much left. You should buy it.

Unfortunately, didn’t find time to do a good review of it, off Thursday and Friday, spent the days at the beach. Hence, one of the reasons I read so much.

Five Border Security “Pitfalls”

Politico’s Josh Gerstein provides them, and the first one is funny as hell

1. It’s so darn expensive

Costing more than $40 billion over 10 years, the “border surge” and fencing proposal is so expensive that it was virtually unthinkable just a week or two ago — until an unexpectedly generous scoring of the broader immigration bill by the Congressional Budget Office left the bill’s backers with a pot of cash (at least in budgeting terms) that could be used to sweeten the deal and get more Republicans on board.

Good grief. That’s a measly $4 billion a year to protect our borders, something that is actually mentioned in the Constitution. Government spent more than that on the worthless “green” parts of the Stimulus. Obama wasted $850 billion in the few years the stimulus was active.

Also mentioned are

  • It’s Congressional micromanagement on steroids (hmm, I don’t remember this complaint regarding Obamacare, gun control, and Dodd-Frank, among others)
  • The trigger isn’t as powerful as it seems at first blush (trigger? What trigger? They’re simply goals that the Sec Of DHS can waive)
  • System to track foreigners will have big gaps (completely true, because Dems wanted this watered down)
  • Tens of billions for the border, but little further away (in other words, forgetting about security for those that are already here)

Meanwhile, here’s more fun from Corker-Hoeven

Starting page 757, does make it a criminal offense, with jail time, for crossing illegally or being in the US illegally, along with civil penalties (fines). Kudos for that. But, we should simply fine them then kick them out, not pay to jail them.

You wouldn’t believe the number of times that the SecDHS can waive stuff, even for murderers, terrorists, and pedophiles.

On the plus side, entities which are legal sponsors of programs which bring visitors in will be responsible for keeping track of status and need to be bonded (starting page 849)

Biggest Carbon Footprint In The World Obama To Release “Climate Change” Plan Tuesday

What he’s doing is creating a plan that will regulate by executive fiat (remember when Obama and Dems used to rail against Bush taking executive action?) that will harm the lower and middle classes

(Washington Post) President Obama will announce Tuesday in a speech at Georgetown University that he plans to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions from existing power plants, according to individuals who have been briefed on the plan but asked not to be identified.

In a statement Saturday afternoon sent via the White House Twitter feed, Obama said that he plans to fulfill the pledge he made in his second inaugural address to “respond to the growing threat of climate change for the sake of our children and future generations.”

I mentioned this the other day when it first cropped up, but now The Man With The Largest Carbon Footprint In The World has a video!

“This Tuesday, I’ll lay out my vision for where I believe we need to go — a national plan to reduce carbon pollution, prepare our country for the impacts of climate change, and lead global efforts to fight it,” the president said. “This is a serious challenge — but it’s one uniquely suited to America’s strengths.”

As usual, there are lots and lots of “I’s” in the video. Anthony Watts pointed out that the vid was getting very few watches, and that hasn’t changed much. As of this writing there were only a bit over 29,000, which is pretty low for a vid released by the White House.

What does the video show? Well, early on it features rain storms, because those never happened before 1980. Then a shot of a coal plant releasing what he wants you to believe is nasty “carbon pollution”, but is in fact water vapor. And yes, he uses Al Gore’s “carbon pollution” phrase. It’s not like CO2 is necessary for life on earth or something.

He wants scientists to develop new fuels and farmers to grow them, which has worked so darn well so far, what with artificially increasing the cost of food (corn ethanol), seeing forests chopped down and animals slaughtered (palm oil fuels), and these fuels actually putting out more CO2 than gasoline.

He mentions preserving “God’s creation”, which probably lost most of his unhinged base. Oh, and the Earth doesn’t care about a little heat. Gaia has dealt with many warm periods, especially the ones since the end of the last glacial age, which were much warmer. CO2 will not destroy the earth, nor damage the waterways, as PBO suggests.

He wants to do this for the sake of the children (while moving his laser like focus away from the economy again). What about when he was wasting $850 billion on his porky pork and campaign contributor Stimulus, which leaves kids and grandkids with a huge borrowed debt? Has anyone explained to Obama that the trend is now for cooling? Oh, and after the speech (via a Tom Nelson flashback)

“When President Obama makes his first extended trip to sub-Saharan Africa later this month, the federal agencies charged with keeping him safe won’t be taking any chances. Hundreds of U.S. Secret Service agents will be dispatched to secure facilities in Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. A Navy aircraft carrier or amphibious ship, with a fully staffed medical trauma center, will be stationed offshore in case of emergency,” reports the Post.

“Military cargo planes will airlift in 56 support vehicles, including 14 limousines and three trucks loaded with sheets of bullet-proof glass to cover the windows of the hotels where the first family will stay. Fighter jets will fly in shifts giving 24-hour coverage over the president’s airspace so they can intervene quickly if an errant plane gets too close.

Yup, President Super Massive Carbon Footprint. Do I even have to mention that calling it “climate change” means a person is interested in politics, not science?

Hooray! Corker-Hoeven Bans Any Profiling, Plus Other Passages

Make sure to keep an eye on Senator David Vitter’s Twitter feed as he reads through the bill. I was just blowing threw it, popping back and forth, and found this little nugget on page 671

6 SEC. 3305. PROFILING.
7 (a) PROHIBITION.—In making routine or spontaneous law enforcement decisions, such as ordinary traffic stops, Federal law enforcement officers may not use race or ethnicity to any degree, except that officers may rely on race and ethnicity if a specific suspect description exists.

There are some exemptions, via the “if specific suspect description exists”. Someone, I don’t thing “hey, there’s 10 Hispanics driving around with no ID and none speak English” will be allowed.

Further lines require reports be collected to make sure no profiling is done, and guidelines be established to make sure no profiling be done.

On page 683-685, it gives the Secretary of DHS the ability to decide who is a stateless person/group to and grant them provisional status despite them being inadmissible to the US or being deportable. And their kids and family. This can act into the “climate refugees”, as well as following pages about “refugees”.

Page 750 starts out blocking all illegals with gang affiliations from earning legal status….oops, SecDHS can waive if the person “renounces” gang affiliation, page 751 starting line 24.

Page 754, habitual drunk drivers (3 or more convictions) aren’t eligible, and, for a change, SecDHS can’t waive. This only applies IF at least 1 conviction comes after the amnesty bill is passed. So, they could have 10 prior, none after, and would be eligible.

Page 756 allows no waivers whatsoever for child sexual offenders. Of course, we’d still have them stuck in our country and jails, paying for them, the child is raped or dead, and the illegal shouldn’t have been here in the first place.

OK, I’ll stop there, getting worked up, and it’s drinking time.
