All That Murderous Violence In Chicago? Yeah, “Climate Change”

You’ve heard about the last violence fest in uber-liberal Chicago, right?

(CBS News) At least 14 people were killed and 58 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago over the long holiday weekend, from Thursday evening through early Monday morning.

There were also six police-involved shootings, two of them involving teens who were killed.

Some, like MSDNC and ABC, report that there were 82 shootings. Chicago’s top cop, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, blames this on lax federal and state gun laws

“The illogical nature of what’s happening here — that government can intercede and prevent this from happening is overwhelming. And I refuse to think otherwise in a great country like America that we can continue to allow this to happen — not just on a state, but on a federal level.”

McCarthy, reciting the criminal histories of several of the suspects in this weekend’s violence, noted gang members face tougher consequences for losing their guns from their gangs than from authorities.

Uh huh. Because we all know that gang members really care heavily about federal and state laws in general, much less gun laws. And Chicago already has some of the nations most draconian gun laws already, laws that pretty much affect law abiding citizens. But, hey, McCarthy is wrong, according to Warmists

Hot summers make for a bloody Chicago

(skip a few paragraphs)

In a city so infamously beset by violence that it’s earned the nickname Chiraq, the general trend has been that murders become more frequent in warmer weather. In 2012, there were 500 murders in Chicago, and many attributed the jaw-dropping figure — the highest in the country — to an unseasonably warm spring and unbearably hot summer. It wasn’t hyperbole: I was there, and I didn’t fully comprehend the meaning of “stifling heat” until July 2012.

When I read about the tragic events of this weekend, I started thinking about a great piece that my colleague Brentin Mock wrote for Grist last week:

When we think of heat-related deaths, we envision elderly people with heart problems who can’t manage under extreme temperatures. But Lee’s film also shows how heat exacerbates underlying tensions and anxieties in our communities, especially those where racial, cultural, and class differences are apparent … Do the Right Thing’s suspense builds as the temperature rises. The destruction at the movie’s conclusion is an apt metaphor for what will happen as the Earth’s temperature rises under climate change, enflaming communities’ socioeconomic problems in the process.

Got that? Warming is making this Bad. And, yes, small scale violence occurs when it is warmer. Studies bear this out. (interestingly, studies also bear out that war and general strife are more prevalent during cool periods). Yet, there have been more than enough murders, acts of violence, and gun violence which occurred during the winter in places like Chicago. The city has reached 200 homicides this year. There were 25 in March, 21 in February, and 23 in January. Certainly less than the 43 in May and 36 in June. And there have been 21 in July already. But, what about the 40 in December, 2013? Not exactly warm. Quite a few of them seem to be in the same areas of Chicago. Quite a few seem to involve gang members.

Instead of worrying about “climate change”, and, of course, they are trying to blame the fictional man-caused climate change, there should be a focus on the types of people involved in the majority of violence. You can’t stop it all, but blaming “climate change” is simply idiotic beyond belief. Furthermore, gun laws focus on law abiding citizens, quite a few who want guns to protect themselves from the criminals that gun laws ignore.

Ruling On Obamacare Subsidies Could Come As Early As This Week

(CBS News) The Supreme Court last week chipped away at one part of the Affordable Care Act, but its ruling in the Hobby Lobby contraception case left most of Obamacare intact. Other court cases, however, are making their way through the court system in an attempt to deliver a more fatal blow to the controversial law.

The Hobby Lobby ruling means nothing in the overall scheme of Obamacare. Even if another case comes along which completely scuttles the “contraception mandate”, it wouldn’t affect Obamacare in the least, since it was an administrative rule, not a requirement of the PPACA.

As early as this week, a three-judge panel from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to hand down a ruling on whether the federal government can give subsidies to Obamacare recipients in states with federally-run health care exchanges. If the appeals court rules in favor of the law’s opponents, it could cripple the law. More than half of the states rely on federally-run marketplaces, and were subsidies not available in those states, Obamacare could be too costly for many customers.

The case, Halbig v. Burwell, rests on how the court system interprets a poorly-worded sentence in the Affordable Care Act.

Section 1311 of the law says the federal government will give subsidies to eligible consumers who buy insurance from an exchange “established by the State.” The Halbig suit — and three other similar cases — argue that, consequently, subsidies aren’t available to customers in the 34 Obamacare exchanges that were established by the federal government.

At the end of the day, this case, originally Halbig v. Sebelius before she jumped ship, seems to rest on intent, at least in the realm of legal arguments and the court precedings. That is the Government argument. However, the actual text of Obamacare is very specific: there can only be subsidies to citizens who sign up through an Exchange established by a State.

Steven Schwinn, a professor at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, agreed that the legal basis for the challenge focuses intently on one poorly-drafted phrase.

“So much of the language of the act makes clear the congressional intent was to extend subsidies to federal exchanges,” he said. “When you look beyond one sentence… I think the picture is quite clear what’s going on in the Affordable Care Act.”

Yet, that is not what the law states. Perhaps the 100% Democrat written law should have had a little more attention paid to, prior to the votes of which no Republicans voted in the affirmative for its passage. Several of the judges had quite a bit of skepticism during the oral arguments for the “intent” argument. If the Government loses the decision, this could be on a fast track to Supreme Court review.

There are also plenty of other lawsuits flying around regarding Obamacare. And, let’s not forget, the ruling regarding the individual mandate comes in to play the minute someone is hit with the fine/fee/tax. When John Roberts sided with the Liberals, that door was opened.

Sarah Palin Joins The Impeach Obama Crowd

Yeah, I’m a little late to this story. Took a drive to the beach for a few days, and had a bit of a problem with something hitting the server. Oh, well. Here’s Sarah Palin

(Breitbart) Enough is enough of the years of abuse from this president. His unsecured border crisis is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, “no mas.”

Without borders, there is no nation. Obama knows this. Opening our borders to a flood of illegal immigrants is deliberate. This is his fundamental transformation of America. It’s the only promise he has kept. Discrediting the price paid for America’s exceptionalism over our history, he’s given false hope and taxpayer’s change to millions of foreign nationals who want to sneak into our country illegally. Because of Obama’s purposeful dereliction of duty an untold number of illegal immigrants will kick off their shoes and come on in, competing against Americans for our jobs and limited public services. There is no end in sight as our president prioritizes parties over doing the job he was hired by voters to do. Securing our borders is obviously fundamental here; it goes without saying that it is his job. (snip)

President Obama’s rewarding of lawlessness, including his own, is the foundational problem here. It’s not going to get better, and in fact irreparable harm can be done in this lame-duck term as he continues to make up his own laws as he goes along, and, mark my words, will next meddle in the U.S. Court System with appointments that will forever change the basic interpretation of our Constitution’s role in protecting our rights.

It’s time to impeach; and on behalf of American workers and legal immigrants of all backgrounds, we should vehemently oppose any politician on the left or right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment.

The many impeachable offenses of Barack Obama can no longer be ignored. If after all this he’s not impeachable, then no one is.

I’ll be honest, she does not completely make the case for impeachment. There needs quite a bit more meat in any call for impeachment. Something like this. And this. And, though I am loathe to cite InfoWars, this. There needs to be solid evidence for any impeachment. Patrick Buchanan lays out a case of there not being enough evidence to do this. Of course, impeachment is a political process, not a legal process. The issues cited in the links I’ve provided more than make the case. Palin does not make the case. Impeachment should not be taken litely.

Furthermore, we would be left with Joe Biden for the rest of the term. Not much would change. And this could energize the Democrats to get out the vote for 2016. It is imperitive that the GOP control Congress and the White House starting in 2017 in order to stop the hemorrhaging of this country.

The Washington Post says this is bad news for the GOP

Palin is hardly the first GOP politician to raise the issue of impeachment over the past couple years. Others include Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Reps. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.), Kerry Bentivolio (R-Mich.), Michael Burgess (R-Tex.) and Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), former congressmen Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) and  Allen West (R-Fla.), and the South Dakota Republican Party. Not all of these folks called for Obama’s impeachment directly, but all of them suggested that it is or should be on the table.

What none of these folks have, though, is a national following. That’s where Palin comes in. She’s the first Republican of any significant national stature to make this call. And she’s the kind of figure who could potentially recruit others to the cause — people who will want to be heard. Palin surely doesn’t carry the kind of weight she once did in the GOP, but she still has a significant tea party following and is highly popular among the conservative base.

Aaron Blake makes a good case that this could cause the GOP lots of problems, but, I doubt it will go very far. Quite frankly, there is so much bad news in the country, so many Issues Of The Week, that nothing will happen unless specific evidence of criminal wrongdoing is exposed. There’s more than enough to make the political case. But there is no political will within the country to impeach.

Detroit Man Arrested, Cited For Burning Koran

(USA Today) A man born in Iraq who says he has a history of psychological problems has admitted to burning Qurans in a Detroit suburb on three separate occasions over the past month.

Ali Hassan Al-Asadi, 51, was arrested on June 25 outside the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn, Mich., after he burned a Quran while holding a wooden club, Dearborn Police Lt. Douglas Topolski said Monday. (snip)

Al-Asadi was charged with littering and the release of soot, both misdemeanors. He was released on a $500 bond after pleading guilty and faces a sentencing on Aug. 5 in 19th District Court in Dearborn.

One has to wonder what would have happened had Al-Asadi burned a Bible. Or an American flag.

Al-Asadi told the Free Press on Monday that he burned a dozen Qurans over the past year at several locations because he has increasingly negative views about Muslims in general and because he had a financial dispute with an Iraqi-American Muslim.

And he’s engaged in what would be Constitutionally protected Free Speech, where it a Bible or Flag.

Imam Husham Al-Husainy, head of the Karbalaa center, thanked police for arresting the man who burned Qurans outside his center. Al-Husainy said he doesn’t know Al-Asadi.

Of course he did.

Bummer: “Climate Change” Could Cause Gingers To Go Extinct

(UK Mirror) Polar bears and Emperor penguins aren’t the only species under threat due to climate change.

Gingers could become extinct as a result of increasingly sunny skies, experts have warned.

Scientists believe the gene that causes red hair is an evolutionary response to cloudy skies and allows inhabitants to get as much Vitamin D as possible.

But if predictions of rising temperatures and blazing sunshine across the British Isles turn out to be correct, flaming red heads could cease to exist within centuries.

While only 1% to 2% of the world’s population are ginger, in the north of the UK, where the weather tends to be more gloomy, this number is much higher.

So, now Hotcoldwetdry causes more sunny skies? Seriously? That’s a new one. But, what if it’s not going to get more sunny?

Dr Alistair Moffat, managing director of Galashiels-based ScotlandsDNA, said: “We think red hair in Scotland, Ireland and in the North of England is adaption to the climate.

“I think the reason for light skin and red hair is that we do not get enough sun and we have to get all the Vitamin D we can.

“If the climate is changing and it is to become more cloudy or less cloudy then this will affect the gene.

“If it was to get less cloudy and there was more sun, then yes, there would be fewer people carrying the gene.”

Get the f*** outa here. More and less cloudy? These people really are bat shit insane. And wouldn’t know science if it reached around and, um, er, OK, won’t go there, bit them in the ass.

Democrats Looking For Legislative Fight Over Abortifacients

One has to wonder if this is a winning strategy going into the 2014 election cycle. Other than their abortion loving base, will this get out the vote for them? And is it the brightest idea to attack private companies in this manner, attempting to remove their 1st Amendment Rights?

(The Hill) Democrats want to lure Republicans into a fight over birth control with legislation to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision that ObamaCare may not require certain businesses to include contraception in their employee health coverage.

At least three bills are being crafted in the House and Senate to amend the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which the high court used as the basis for its ruling that the contraception mandate violated federal law.

Democrats are expected to introduce the measures prior to Congress’s August recess as part of an effort to recalibrate the party’s election-year messaging. Their hope is to turn out female voters by casting the court’s decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby as a strike against reproductive rights.

This could easily backfire, if Republican messaging is on point (yeah, not always something we can count on, though there are always the outside groups making TV commercial buys): they can easily point out that this is not about contraception, but abortifacients. They can also point out that the “contraception mandate” was not, in fact, part of the Obamacare law as written, but wholly a concoction of Team Obama to patronize their base and young women, moochers who want Someone Else to pay for their condoms and birth control pills. Though, of course, avoiding mentioning that last part.

“It will drive women to the polls this November to vote for the women candidates who are on the right side of women’s access to basic healthcare.”

“This will be a huge motivator for women in the fall and a liability for Republican candidates up and down the map,” Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) spokesman Justin Barasky added.

Abortifacients is a big driver of women to the polls? One has to wonder about their priorities and incompetence in using proper contraception to avoid getting pregnant.

Federal health officials could pursue regulations requiring insurers or the government to pay for birth control for women whose employers opt out of the mandate.

But for now, despite pressure from liberal groups, the White House is putting the onus on Congress. The tactic amounts to inviting the GOP to a legislative fight.

“The best way to resolve this situation is for Congress to pass a law,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday.

So now it’s up to the Central Government to pay for women to obtain abortifacients? Doesn’t that violate the Hyde Amendment?? Oh, right, loopholes. Why can’t they pay for them themselves? Why is it necessary for Someone Else to pay for them?

Lack Of Deportations A Big Factor In Illegal Alien Border Surge

(Breitbart) A leaked internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) indicates that recent public assertions made by the Administration were at best half-truths regarding the deportations and motivations of the waves of minors illegally entering the United States. The leaked report’s release date is identified as June 3, 2014. The internal report was leaked to Breitbart Texas by a trusted law enforcement source in DHS who wishes to remain unidentified.

The report, identified as “De-Classified” and “Law Enforcement Sensitive,” reveals the fact that only 0.1 percent of the Central American minors illegally entering the U.S. having been deported in Fiscal Year 2013, down from two percent prior, plays a significant role in why the current border crisis is occurring. The DHS-ICE agency report admits the fact that 98 percent are allowed to stay is a significant draw for the minors to come into the United States. The agency acknowledges that conditions in Central America play a role in why the wave is occurring, but directly contradicts the assertion that such conditions are the only significant reason the crisis exists. The report directly contradicts any assertion U.S. government refusals to deport illegal immigrants is not a significant factor in why the crisis is occurring.

The report further reveals that Central American nations are doing little to curb the flow of illegal immigration to the U.S. and attributes the lack of efforts in the host nations to stop the flow to the nations wanting their nationals to send money back home from the United States. The report also indicates that family members from the host nations already residing in the U.S. is a major draw for the current crisis. This indicates that illegal aliens already within the U.S. are possibly drawing more to illegally migrate north.

One of the big pulls for the “unaccompanied other than Mexican” illegal migration is wanting to reunited with other illegals already present in the United States. Then we learn directly from the document

No single factor causes OTM UC migration to the United States. Rather, several factors combine to cause this, including poor economies and violence in home countries, potential employment opportunities in the United States, family reunification, and success at not being immediately repatriated drive OTM UC migration to the United States.

In other words, not being deported. Could this be Obama’s Katrina moment? (via Ace)

(Washington Times) MSNBC panelists on Monday seemed puzzled by the president’s refusal to visit the U.S.-Mexico border while he fundraises in Texas, with USA Today reporter Susan Page calling the decision Mr. Obama’s “Katrina moment.”

Appearing on “The Daily Rundown,” Carolyn Ryan of The New York Times argued that the crisis on the border, in which thousands of immigrants are crossing illegally in record numbers, goes to question the president’s competence…

[Chuck] Todd said the administration has been “defiant” in refusing to visit the border while the president attends a fundraiser in Texas on Wednesday.

“It’s a Katrina moment, right?” Ms. Page asked. “And you’re going to a fundraiser and not going to the border where there’s this crisis?”

Fair or not, Bush made a few mistakes with Katrina. No need to rehash his role. For Obama, though, he barely seems engaged with the issue. He’s going to Texas to do the only thing he’s qualified to do: fund-raise.

The Parameters Of Warming

Let’s go back to basics, shall we?

  1. I believe that the Earth has warmed since 1850: I know this as a scientific fact. The warming is about 1.4 Fahrenheit in that time frame
  2. CO2 has increased in that time. Some believe that the danger threshold was 350ppm. If so, then why did warming spikes occur prior to that metric? Why were multiple Holocene warm period periods warmer than the current one? What cause the end of the last glacial period (which, technically, is still occurring, since there are glaciers)? Could there not be a more natural explanation?
  3. I believe Man does play some small part in the warming, mostly from things other than CO2. Land use, UHI, agriculture, landfills, even ocean pollution and ozone depletion. Consider that it is a fact that much of the warming is occurring at night, or, I should say, we do not get the radiative cooling that should occur.
  4. Let’s skip all the other random thoughts, and go to the big one: the argument is not about warming, it is about causation. Period. I have had arguments, not discussion, argument, with folks on the Right who claim there has been no warming. They’re deluded. I don’t believe in Creationism, but I’m willing to listen to them (not believe them, mind you) because at least they are arguing from a religious POV. The scientific facts show warming.
  5. The argument is about what has caused the Modern Warm Period warming.
  6. And, finally, the Earth has warmed around 1.4F, but what has caused this to occur. This is the crux of the debate.

Oh, by the way, I’m arguing causation, not warming. Hope that clears it up.
