Fiddling With Temperature Data

Obviously, Warmists will attack the messengers, rather than wonder “hey, um, why exactly are the data sets messed with?”

The fiddling with temperature data is the biggest science scandal ever

When future generations look back on the global-warming scare of the past 30 years, nothing will shock them more than the extent to which the official temperature records – on which the entire panic ultimately rested – were systematically “adjusted” to show the Earth as having warmed much more than the actual data justified.

Two weeks ago, under the headline “How we are being tricked by flawed data on global warming”, I wrote about Paul Homewood, who, on his Notalotofpeopleknowthat blog, had checked the published temperature graphs for three weather stations in Paraguay against the temperatures that had originally been recorded. In each instance, the actual trend of 60 years of data had been dramatically reversed, so that a cooling trend was changed to one that showed a marked warming.

This was only the latest of many examples of a practice long recognised by expert observers around the world – one that raises an ever larger question mark over the entire official surface-temperature record.

Following my last article, Homewood checked a swathe of other South American weather stations around the original three. In each case he found the same suspicious one-way “adjustments”. First these were made by the US government’s Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN). They were then amplified by two of the main official surface records, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (Giss) and the National Climate Data Center (NCDC), which use the warming trends to estimate temperatures across the vast regions of the Earth where no measurements are taken. Yet these are the very records on which scientists and politicians rely for their belief in “global warming”.

As Christopher Booker goes on to note, Paul Homewood is looking into the Arctic, and finding lots of issues with the official data. In another post he notes information by Dave Burton which shows that adjustments have artificially increased land surface temperatures by 34.87% between 1900-2014, and

Dave Burton has taken the Cowton graph from the video, and added the narrative in green as above. Using specialised digital analysis techniques, Dave has calculated that adjustments have increased temperature trends for global land surfaces from 0.7527C/C to 1.01551C. In other words, about a quarter of the claimed global warming since 1900 is actually an artifact of adjustments.

Yes, global warming has occurred. This is the nature of the Holocene, and surely what has occurred throughout the lifespan of the Earth. Mini cooling and warming periods, which can last a couple hundred years to half a millennium or longer. Warmists want to blame this all on CO2 from Mankind, and state that warm period is somehow different from all the others, yet, a) they feel a need to change/adjust/modify/make up the data, and b) refuse to give up their own big CO2 lifestyles.

Good News: Grammy’s Pay Homage To Criminals With “Hands Up” Display

Which is interesting, considering that the Grammys were held in rather White Los Angeles (9.2% Black) in rather White California (6.6% Black)

(Mediaite) Pharrell‘s performance of “Happy” at Sunday evening’s 57th Annual Grammy Awards included a tribute to the “Hands up, don’t shoot” mantra that emerged late last year following the shooting death of Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson.

Midway through the song, his dancers donning black hoodies and jeans threw their hands up in an obvious nod to the demonstrators who turned out following the deaths of Brown (and Eric Garner).

Here’s what that looked like.

I wonder if Pharrell will take back the assertion that Mike Brown was a bully.

Video if you’re interested.

https://twitter.com/katienelson/status/564622109125918720

Great comment at Mediaite: “Not only did he perpetuate a myth…even if it happened he trivialized it.” It didn’t happen. And Pharrell and his dancers are extolling a thug who assaulted a clerk, stole cigars, assaulted a police officer, attempted to take the officers gun, ran away when the gun went off, then came back and charged the officer.

As far as the demonstrators go, people who riot and loot multiple times, call for violence, and make death threats are not “demonstrators”.

Washington Post Questions Brian Williams’ Katrina “Criminal Gangs” Story

This makes me wonder: if Brian Williams could believe he was able to trot out these whoppers on a constant basis, who else in the news media does the same?

Questioning Brian Williams’s claims that ‘gangs’ terrorized the Ritz-Carlton during Katrina

There’s a story Brian Williams likes to tell. He has told it in a TV interview. He has told it to at least two book authors. But even though it had all the makings of a great yarn — danger, guns, resolve — Williams never reported it to his viewers.

It’s the one about the gangs that Williams claimed had “overrun” a posh Ritz-Carlton where he stayed during Hurricane Katrina.

Williams is an, as WP writer Terrence McCoy terms it, hibernation mode following the revelations regarding his adventures in a military helicopter that was shot down in Iraq, how he “stared down the barrel of an RPG”, which all turned out to be untrue. Stories he told again and again and again.

…few stories illustrated that predilection to talk more than his takes on Katrina — the stories with which he made his bones. But now some of them are taking heat.

Among them: The one he told about witnessing a suicide at the Superdome. Or the one he told about watching a body float past the Ritz-Carlton, perched at the edge of an otherwise dry French Quarter. Or the one about the dysentery he said he got. And, finally, the story he told about the Ritz-Carlton gangs. Three separate sources told reporters no gangs infiltrated the Ritz-Carlton.

Go ahead and read the rest of the Washington Post story for the full details, which, at best, show that Williams significantly embellished his narrative, at worst, simply made it up. Some report that there were a few nutjobs, possibly thugs, in the hotel, but not “criminal gangs”.

He eventually made a break for it, “wading” out into what is described as “two feet of floodwater, barely able to stand.” In front of the hotel, a violent confrontation loomed. “A gang was waiting on the streetcar tracks in front of the Ritz, ready go ‘smash and grab,’ as Williams put it, to take the vehicle.” Some Louisiana National Guardsmen then materialized to confront the marauders and ensure the “NBC trio didn’t get their escape vehicle hijacked. ‘They aimed weapons at the men on the street,’ Williams recalled. ‘Then we were on our own.’” Somehow, Williams said he soldiered on, making all of his broadcasts.

While it seems possible, because there darned sure were lots of “criminal gangs”, and just plain thugs running around New Orleans, Governor Blanco did such a poor job before, during, and after Katrina that having the National Guard at the hotel is rather unbelievable.

It’s difficult to tell what actually happened at the hotel. The Ritz-Carlton hasn’t commented much. It’s possible gangs overtook the hotel, brandished guns and terrorized the people inside. It’s possible Williams confronted a gang bent on stealing his car when he emerged from the hotel. But it’s also possible this was another case of what the American Journalism Review called “myth-making in New Orleans.”

You know what’s also strange? These kinds of issues, these “myths”, never occurred in Mississippi, which was hit very hard by Katrina. All 82 of Mississippi’s counties were declared federal disaster areas. The eye wall did not pass over New Orleans, but over Miss. cities. It was hit with a 27 foot storm surge that traveled up to 6 miles inland. Mississippi took the brunt of the right side of the hurricane, typically said to be the worst side. Yet, no “myths” or outlandish stories.

Interestingly, none of Brian Williams’ claims actually appeared on tape at the time they happened.

Don’t forget to check out all the other great material all the linked blogs have!

Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

Prince Charles: U.K. Muslims In U.K. Should Live By U.K. Values

Yes, yes, when it comes to “climate change”, Prince Charles is a complete boob, and a major hypocrite. That in no way means that he isn’t correct on other subjects. He’s a big supporter of the U.K. military, and apparently not a big fan of Muslims being radicalized. Of course, his words are considered “controversial” in the modern P.C., multiculturalist, “tolerant”, diversity world

(UK Daily Mail) Prince Charles risked provoking a new political and religious storm yesterday when he said Muslims living in the UK should follow British values.

In a staunch defence of Britain’s ‘Christian standpoint,’ he denounced the radicalisation of young Britons by Islamic fanatics and said they should show more respect to ‘the values we hold dear’.

People who had ‘come here, were born here or go to school here’ should ‘abide by our values,’ he said. His comments were made as he started a six-day tour of the Middle East, seen as another stage in assuming more of the Queen’s international duties.

The Prince’s intervention comes hard on the heels of a new book which claims the Queen is worried that her heir plans to be an ‘activist king’. The Prince’s comments on Islam and Christianity are broadcast in an interview with BBC Radio 2’s The Sunday Hour this morning, suggesting he plans to be very active.

‘The radicalisation of people in Britain is a great worry, and the extent to which this is happening is alarming, particularly in a country like ours where we hold values dear,’ he says. ‘You would think the people who have come here, or are born here, and go to school here, would abide by those values and outlooks.’

It was ‘frightening’ that young British Muslims were radicalised by ‘crazy stuff on the internet’.

Charles will reinforce his tough stance on Islamic extremism by telling the new Saudi king to show clemency to Saudi blogger Badawi (who was sentenced to receive 1000 lashes, and has already received quite a few).

Britain is perhaps the worst European country for Islamic radicalism, having been tolerant for decades. This goes directly to the Progressive worldview about tolerance, diversity, and multiculturalism, along with a notion that no society is better than any other. There’s also a notion that criticizing radical Islam could set oneself up for a violent attack, possibly leading to death. The Religion Of Peace is very unhappy when anyone dares criticize it, and may make threats, and follow through with them. The other half of the time the RoP will engage in a campaign to negatively brand an opponent as an “Islamophobe”, and Progressive wankers will happily fall in line and do the same, rather than addressing the danger within their midst.

It’s one thing to bring in compatible values and integrate them. Here in the United States, can you imagine the nation without Italians and the Irish, coming in large waves post Revolution? The Brits and Scots were already the primary residents. Other big influxes have provided heavily and positively to the nation. Many Chinese who came over in the late 1800’s. So many of the southern Asians, such as the Vietnamese, have integrated well. Even those who were provided amnesty in the 1980’s provided value, because they wanted to be part of the Great Melting Pot, rather attempting to force the U.S. to adapt to them, like today’s illegals.

It’s not just radical Islam of which Britain has been tolerant

Only one in 10 pupils at east London primary speaks English as first language – down from nine out of 10 in 1999… and now they speak SIXTY different languages

  • More than 60 languages are spoken at Britain’s biggest primary school
  • Only 10 per cent of pupils have English as their first language
  • More than a third of new arrivals at Gascoigne Primary speak no English
  • One 10-year-old from Bulgaria could not say how old he is, show revealed

How does a society, a nation, operate and survive in these conditions? Of course, you get these types of twits

Some parents speak warmly of the school and maintain the language barriers present no problems for their children’s education.

Sarah Mallia, who is British-born but married to an Albanian, says her daughter Melissa, five, speaks English and Albanian.

‘When they have had children arriving who don’t speak any English, I know Melissa has taken them under her wing and helped them settle in,’ she says.

These same types of people declare that it is raaaaacist (bigoted, mean, etc) to force these kids (and adults) to learn to speak English. They should learn the language prior to being placed in class, which would remove the disruptions and slow to low learning that occurs because of the language barriers.

The radical Islamists bring their culture, their values, and their social mores, which are incompatible with Western society, and expect the Brits (and Americans, Canadians, French, Spanish, Swedes, etc) to provide accommodation. And, somehow, we tolerate it. Things like stoning adulterers, hanging gays, honor killings, women forced to wear full body covers, women forced to submit to men, and all the other things that radical Islam stands for. Including the violence.

Anyhow, kudos to Prince Charles for taking a stand.

Let the Liberal strawmen, equivocations, and deflections begin.

ISIS Proclaims US Hostage Killed In Jordan Air Strikes

The obvious narrative from ISIS is that Jordan is to blame

(NY Times)  She had always been the unidentified, lone female American hostage of the Islamic State. For nearly 17 months, while her fellow American captives were beheaded one after another in serial executions posted on YouTube, Kayla Mueller’s name remained a closely guarded secret, whispered among reporters, government officials and hostage negotiators — all fearing that any public mention might imperil her life.

On Friday, the Islamic State confirmed her identity, announcing that Ms. Mueller, a 26-year-old aid worker from Prescott, Ariz., had been killed in the falling rubble of a building in northern Syria that it said had been struck by bombs from a Jordanian warplane. Both the Jordanian and American governments said there was no proof, even as they rushed to deplore her possible death. Top Jordanian officials said the announcement was cynical propaganda.

Ms. Mueller was abducted while on the road from Syria back to Turkey (might not have been a wise idea to be in Syria in the first place). If she was killed in a Jordanian airstrike, the blame goes strictly to ISIS, which was holding her captive.

Climate Change Is Totally Like 4 Guys Sitting At A Lunch Counter In Greensboro Or Something

No, really! (video at the link)

Climate Change Is Young People’s ‘Lunch Counter Moment’

Fifty-five years ago Jibreel Khazan of the Greensboro Four sat down at the lunch counter inside the Woolworth store on Feb. 1, 1960 with three other classmates from North Carolina A&T University to highlight racial injustices in America.

At that time, Jibreel and his classmates were fighting for equality, and the goal to desegregate the lunch counter across America became central in that fight.

Today, while the fight for equality continues, because of climate change it is no longer just about equality, but also existence.

Jibreel Khazan has stated that “climate change is young people’s ‘lunch counter moment’ for the 21st century.”

All young people should listen, and give up all their modern conveniences, like their tablets, smartphones, computers, TVs, ice makers, and so on.

Bobby Jindal Provides Perfect Response To Obama’s Silly Christian Blaming

I’ve said many, many times over the years, and, in particular, over the past few days, that Liberals like to use language designed specifically to deflect from the given subject. They create strawmen, they throw out words and phrases such as “racist!”, “bigot!”, “settled science”, and “Islamophobia”, they attempt to put people on the defense, all which changes the tone of the debate. This is exactly what Obama did with his petty speech at the National Prayer Breakfast regarding past negative actions of Christians. I’ve listened a bit to Beck, Hannity, and Rush fall into this trap. Jonah Goldberg did. Many on Fox News and in the Conservative Blogosphere fell into this same trap. So did many Republican politicians. They started going down all the roads of “wait a minute, this happened hundreds of years to a millennium ago.” Not Bobby Jindal, though

(National Review)  Bobby Jindal on Friday released a statement responding to the president’s remarks on Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast in which he cautioned Americans from getting on a “high horse” when taking a stance against radical Islam because people have committed “terrible deeds” in the name of Christianity, too.

“It was nice of the President to give us a history lesson at the Prayer breakfast,” Jindal said. “Today, however, the issue right in front of his nose, in the here and now, is the terrorism of Radical Islam, the assassination of journalists, the beheading and burning alive of captives. We will be happy to keep an eye out for runaway Christians, but it would be nice if he would face the reality of the situation today. The Medieval Christian threat is under control, Mr. President. Please deal with the Radical Islamic threat today.”

That is an utterly perfect response. In sales, we deal with something similar all the time. Customers try and take off the beaten path, and our job is to get them back to the correct trail, which leads to a sale (or at least to not waste more time than necessary). What Jindal did is much like the basic form of overcoming objections (amazingly, many try to over-complicate this with 5 to 7 steps). Acknowledge the objection. Reiterate the objection. Then provide a solution. This is also sometimes called ARC (Acknowledge the concern, Respond to the concern, Close that part of the conversation, with C being the hard part. Different situations have different closes). If this isn’t done correctly, you get stuck in the quicksand.

Jindal acknowledged the concern, responded to the concern, then closed it and moved on without get stuck in the quicksand of Obama’s intended conversation deflection, and put it back on Obama.

OK, cue up the Islamist supporting deflections and strawmen from Lefties.
