NY Times Very Upset Over Legal Immigration Program That Replaces Citizen Workers

The Editorial Board actually makes a good point, which then takes an insane Leftist World turn in the last paragraph

Workers Betrayed by Visa Loopholes

It hardly needs saying that immigration policy should not undermine Americans’ jobs, wages or working conditions. The problem is that what some companies want — cheap, exploitable, disposable labor — is exactly what the system can be twisted into giving them.

Former workers at Walt Disney World in Orlando or at Southern California Edison, the power utility, can tell the story. Those two companies recently laid off hundreds of tech employees, who were replaced by temporary workers recruited by outsourcing firms based in India.

These are only two of many troubling episodes involving the H-1B program, which provides up to 85,000 visas a year to foreigners, mainly highly skilled technical workers. The program was created to allow companies to fill gaps in their work force with specialized employees they cannot find in the United States. But the law has loopholes, and companies here and overseas ruthlessly exploit them. A huge industry has risen to meet labor demand in the information-technology sector, with the imported workers being employees of the outsourcing firms.

The Disney story is all the rage, as it should be. It’s beyond disgraceful what they did, and it will be interesting to see if the park’s attendance suffers. The Magic Kingdom saw attendance surge in 2014, while Orlando’s Sea World say their figures decline by 8 percent, which is blamed on the movie “Blackfish”, about the supposed poor treatment of the Orca’s, which Sea World disputes. Might the reports of Disney forcing employees to train their imported replacements cause a similar decline? Not much people can do about Edison.

And, the NY Times is correct about the problems with the H-1B program and the need for reform. They’re further correct regarding the first paragraph, that immigration policy should not undermine American jobs, wages, nor working conditions. That said, the NY Times, including the Editorial Board, has long fought for not only treating illegal aliens, with supposedly 35-40% being people who overstayed visas, with kid gloves, but legalizing them in some manner, both conditions which negatively affect American jobs, wages, and working conditions.

A mass influx of foreigners doing the jobs of the workers they displace is clearly not what the law intended. Congress surely did not want to give companies a more efficient means of slashing payroll costs while pushing more people to the curb. But despite common perceptions about the H-1B law, it does not require companies to recruit American workers before looking overseas.

Yet, we have a mass influx of illegals who create problematic working conditions for legal American citizens.

The program badly needs reforming, which even members of Congress who are otherwise far apart on immigration issues agree on. Senators Durbin and Charles Grassley of Iowa have proposed tightening the rules to require companies to work harder to find people in this country to fill jobs, to post job openings on the Labor Department website and to pay fairer wages. They would also give the government more authority to investigate fraud, and added protections for H-1B workers, who themselves are vulnerable to exploitation because of their dependency on their employers.

Yes, the program should be overhauled. It would be a simple matter to pass these types of rules. But, of course, illegal immigration

Many of these good ideas were contained in a Senate bill to overhaul the immigration system. That bill died, killed by hard-liners in the House who objected to its provisions for unauthorized immigrants.

That was a tragedy, because worker protection has always been a core ideal of comprehensive immigration reform, which would include allowing 11 million unauthorized immigrants to seek legal status and work without fear. With no immediate possibility of such an immigration overhaul, opportunistic tech companies are pursuing their own narrow agenda, pushing for vast increases in H-1B visas. That might help their recruiting problems, but leave much of the system as dysfunctional as ever. Better to fix immigration with the right goals in mind: a fair deal for all workers and their families.

So, on one hand, the Times’s EB wants a program that brings in people legally (though despicably) to be fixed. On the other, they want mostly low skilled, often illiterate, often unable to speak English, often low or un-educated, to be legalized, who can then be used to replace legal citizen jobs.

Slate Knows The Best Way To Force Industry To Care About Hotcoldwetdry

The perfect headline when discussing “climate change”, from hyper-Warmist Eric Holthaus

New Report Finds the Best Way to Make Industry Care About Climate Change: Money

Force industry to care.

A new report out earlier this month by the global consulting firm Mercer is perhaps the most striking argument yet for fossil fuel divestment, written in the cold, calculated prose of international finance. Its very blunt conclusion: “Climate risk is inevitable. Some impacts on investment returns are inevitable.”

The report looks out to 2050, but its focus on the next 18 months to 10 years—and its emphasis on the unique risks to the fossil fuel industry—makes it especially relevant in the near-term. Specifically, the report advocates for “portfolio decarbonization”—aka divestment—and argues that by reducing your investment exposure to sensitive sectors of the economy (the report identifies utilities, real estate, timber, agriculture, but calls the fossil fuel industry the most risky) you can avoid holding “stranded assets” should world governments put caps on carbon emissions or extreme weather produce escalating damage.

In short, by ridding your portfolio of climate sensitive or fossil fuel intensive companies, you can make the world a better place, and make money at the same time. Climate deniers with fat bank accounts, consider this your chance to change your tune—it’s OK to be selfish, to do it for the money, we won’t blame you.

Warmists keeping showing their cards, that what they really want is to force Other People to obey the tenets of the Cult of Climastrology. All while refusing to give up their own use of fossil fuels.

Pope Francis To Call For Revolution On Hotcoldwetdry

Pope Francis has been moving the Roman Catholic church into the realm of “climate change” over the past few months, lending his voice to the unhinged Cult of Climastrology. He’s now poised to make it official

(UK Daily Mail) Pope Francis is to call for a stop to climate change and global inequality in a letter due to be sent to the world’s 1.2billion Catholics.

In an unprecedented encyclical on environment, the Argentinian pontiff is expected to call for a ‘fundamental change of course to protect the earth and its people’.

The UN believes the letter, which will be called ‘Laudato Sii’ or ‘Praised Be’ and is due to be published on Thursday, will have a ‘major impact’ and could herald the start of a ‘transformation’.

In the letter, which will be sent to the 5,000 Catholic bishops around the world and published in five languages online, the Pope is expected to argue that the world faces ruin without a revolution in hearts and minds.

When is this ruin coming? Cult of Climastrology members have been predicting doom for decades. What of all their prognostications of an ice free Arctic? None have come to pass. ABC News predicted in 2008 that 2015 would see NYC under water and hundreds of miles of land on fire due to “climate change”. We were told that 2005 would be the “new normal” for hurricanes. Didn’t happen. Superstorm Sandy was also supposed to be the new normal. Nope. We get prediction after prediction, and none come to pass. Though the CoC does work overtime to blame every weather event on Hotcoldwetdry. Including cold and snowy winters.

Cardinal Peter Turkson, of Ghana – who oversaw the drafting of the encyclical – said action to halt climate change was needed. He said the letter would address the root causes of poverty and the threats facing nature.

He told a conference on climate change at the Vatican earlier this year: ‘We clearly need a fundamental change of course, to protect the earth and its people — which in turn will allow us to dignify humanity.’

Just as Warmists link every real world issue, particularly environmental issues, to “climate change”, which damages the impact of the real issue, linking poverty to “climate change” diminishes the importance of that issue, particularly when inexpensive, affordable, reliable, and accessible energy does more to lift people out of poverty than anything else.

The Pope’s letter is likely to have a major impact in spurring UN negotiations on global warming and will add a moral dimension to work on climate change, experts predicted.

I’ve written many times about the intersection of religion with the far left Progressive (nice fascist) movement when it comes to “climate change”, and this brings to mind a few questions: does Pope Francis believe it is moral for citizens to give up their freedoms to Government? Does he think citizens should put control of their lives in the hands of Government? Is it moral to force citizens to be subservient to The Government? Because those are things that are primary tenets of Progressivism. Having government accumulate more power over citizens, private entities, and economies, all for people’s own good. Does he think that this pronouncement will ingratiate the Catholic Church to the far left, which despises religion?

Does he think it’s a good idea to increase the power of the United Nations, a body chock full of tyrants, dictators, and murderers? A body whose peace-keepers have been involved with rape, theft, destruction of property, and host of other bad behavior? A body which ran the Oil For Food program, one full of graft, which saw the food diverted, among other problems? A body which ignored the Rwanda massacre? And other massacres? One which which wants to destroy the nation of Israel? One which had the sex-for-food scandal? How about a body that has nations such as China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and others serving on the Human Rights Commission? The list goes on and on.

Perhaps Pope Francis should take a look at the computer models, and see how wrong they have been. Perhaps he should note that Warmists have to “adjust” their data to match their predictions. Perhaps he should note that the climate has always changed, and will always change. Perhaps he should note that he’s being duped. Like the rest of the Cult of Climastrology.

“Your Carbon Emissions May End Up Starving Poor People in Africa” Or Something

The latest big talking point from the Cult of Climastrology is about Hotcoldwetdry causing shorter growing seasons maybe possibly in The Future. Here’s one of the nuttier missives on the subject, which has the exact headline I used

(TakePart) While the grow-your-own ethos has gained popularity in the United States in recent years, for many people around the globe, having a garden is not a matter of choice. Because in many places it’s still your backyard, not the grocery store, that provides the bulk of your food. Globally, 70 percent of the food supply comes from smallholder farms—and if climate change continues unabated, those subsistence growers may be the ones most dramatically affected.

A new study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One looked at how a changing climate will reshape the growing calendar come 2100. Under “business as usual” climate-change projections, the researchers determined that the number of “suitable growing days” will drop by 11 percent, on average, around the world—and far more in certain regions. The tropics allow for a year-round growing season, but the climate-change impacts on temperature, drought, and solar radiation could cut 200 days from the farming calendar.

If if if if if. More doomsaying from the Cult, based on faulty computer models
and wishful thinking, forgetting that previous warm periods had excellent agricultural production, as has this current warm period. Sure, warmth can cause issues, as we saw during the 1930’s, when it was warmer than today. Prior to data “adjustments”.

Of course, anthropogenic causation hasn’t been proven.

Surprise: June In Baltimore Is Still Pretty Darned Violent And Murderous

Certain residents of Baltimore wanted a lighter police presence, and got what they wished for. Police are now mostly being reactive, rather than proactive, which had previously helped hold down the violence which had made Baltimore safer than just 3% of American cities, with a violent crime rate almost four times the nation average

(Baltimore Sun) Baltimore police announced the arrests of two men in the death of a 16-year-old girl and the indictments of 11 members of a suspected drug crew they say might be responsible for some of the violence that has roiled the city in recent weeks.

The arrests and indictments come as police face criticism amid a surge of shootings and killings since the arrest of Freddie Gray. The 25-year-old Baltimore man died in April after suffering a severe spinal cord injury in police custody.

“We are in the battle,” police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts said Thursday. “You can see we are in the battle, and we’re showing you we are in the battle and we’re taking this very seriously.”

The city recorded 42 homicides in May — the deadliest month in 25 years — and has started June with 14 more.

The two men arrested are serious scumbags, having broken in to the home, sexually assaulting her, then strangling her with an electrical cord. All for a score of $40, a laptop, and an iPad. Then they set her body and the house on fire. You’ll have to read the rest of the article to see how “evil” these guys were, as Police Maj. Stanley Bradford called their motive. The girl knew these two scumbags, and had been hanging out with them. She had even talked to Dixon just a few hours prior.

This is life in Baltimore. Homicides and shootings, along with robberies and auto thefts, are way up in Baltimore post-Freddie Gray funeral, arrests way down. And it doesn’t help that the community is less engaged with police. The dangerous situation to police in these neighborhoods with the high crime has required the Baltimore PD to double up officers, meaning a systematic decrease in police coverage.

Around the nation, communities and police departments are struggling to adapt to an era of heightened scrutiny, when every stop can be recorded on a cellphone. But residents, clergy members and neighborhood leaders say the past six weeks have made another reality clear: that as much as some officers regularly humiliated and infuriated many who live here, angering gang members and solid citizens alike, the solution has to be better policing, not a diminished police presence.

Funny, most articles and preachings fail to mention what their ideas for better policing are. Most tend to be squishy feel good Kumbaya notions that fail to reduce crime. They also fail to mention what they will do to get the people in their neighborhoods to be less criminal.

Washington Post: Democrats Holding Obama’s Trade Deals Hostage

Huh. I didn’t expect to see this from the WP Editorial Board

A trade fail, courtesy of House Democrats

HERE IS the state of affairs on free trade after Friday’s dramatic votes in the House: President Obama wants trade-promotion authority, known as fast-track, from Congress to strengthen the hand of his negotiators working on the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership deal. A bipartisan majority of the Senate has already voted for fast-track authority. A bipartisan majority of the House is on record in favor of it as well. Yet none of this matters, because most House Democrats exploited an arcane point of procedure to cast fast-track authority into legislative limbo — with no clear means of escape.

This blow to the United States’ standing among its Pacific Rim allies, and to majority rule, is not the result of Mr. Obama’s allegedly high-handed personality, which, according to some reports, alienated Democrats in the final furious hours of lobbying. No one has had frostier dealings with the president than Republican House Speaker John A. Boehner (Ohio) or Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (Wis.), yet they managed to put that aside for the sake of a shared goal: the passage of fast-track authority.

Obama showed up on Capital Hill to whip the Democrats, and told them that a vote against the bills was a vote against him. Democrat Keith Ellison noted on Twitter that “Now Obama wants to talk?” (and took a lot of heat over it from the liberal base), something Obama hadn’t bothered with previously. As usual. Obama typically likes to just lay down his position and expects everyone to Get In Line. Obama did note that he “alienated some folks“.

No, what we have here is a desperate, and somewhat cynical, maneuver by the opponents of fast-track authority, and it goes like this. Trade Adjustment Assistance is an aid program for workers displaced by imports; Democrats and their allies in organized labor have backed it for decades. It runs out in September, but in order to reassure Hill Democrats and attract votes for fast-track authority, Mr. Obama insisted on linking its passage to a bill reauthorizing (and expanding) the assistance program for six years. The Republicans agreed. However, once organized labor realized that it was not going to be able to deny the president a majority for fast-track authority, it began trying to stop that measure by pressuring House Democrats to kill the assistance program — and labor leaders succeeded, because a majority of Democrats, including, crucially, minority leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), went along.

That doesn’t really explain the whys, does it.

In short, the forces opposing fast-track authority turned a long-standing Democratic Party policy priority into a short-term political hostage. So what if the assistance program — intended to help workers displaced by trade regardless of whether the president’s new free-trade measures are ever passed — is now on course to expire in September? Apparently opponents despise free trade even more than they like helping its purported victims.

And boom, there it is. The Democrats are hostage takers, a phrase usually reserved for Republicans when they oppose Obama’s will. Hostage takers!

In fact, only 86 Republicans voted for TAA. And there are lots and lots of good reasons to vote against “Nay”. Down in the WP comments, on Democrats gives three

1. The bill was to pay for the retraining of American workers who lose their jobs because of TPP partly by cutting Medicare. Not something many Dems could support.
2. Many Dems consider the bill’s retraining budget grossly inadequate, considering the likely scope of the job loss TPP will produce.
3. Many Dems realized that this was their last, best chance to block the TPP, which they believe would be a disaster for American workers. That is the strong view of most labor leaders, who know whereof they speak; it’s their area of particular interest and expertise.

Republicans who voted no certainly saw this in a similar fashion, mostly about American workers losing their jobs. There are so many problems with these bills as pushed, starting with the fact that they have been kept secret for the 6 years Obama has been working on them, and We The People cannot read them unless they are passed, which breaks promises from Democrats, Republicans, and Obama.

Why Are Liberals Engaged In A War On Black Girls?

Salon writer Brittney Cooper is Very Concerned

America’s war on Black girls: Why McKinney police violence isn’t about “one bad apple”
Many have been quick to dismiss or make excuses for the shocking video out of Texas. Here’s the truth of the matter

In just over two months, we will commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a natural disaster that ravaged communities along the Gulf Coast. This tragedy was made infinitely worse not only by decades of governmental neglect and far-ranging poverty, but also by the fact that so many Black people could not swim.

That nearly 60 percent of Black people cannot swim is directly attributable to decades of segregated pool facilities in this country. While that problem ostensibly went away with the desegregation efforts of the mid-20th century, de facto segregation of pool facilities persists to this day, because community pools are now largely private amenities in suburban neighborhoods that many Black youth don’t have access to.

Got that? Even though segregation ended long ago, by law, it’s the fault of White People not allowing Blacks to swim in their pools. Because there wouldn’t be massive lawsuits and stuff if they were denied access to a public pool. Interestingly, so many of these areas with public pools where Blacks live are in Deep Democrat areas, so, this means that Democrats are racists and want Black girls, and boys, to die. Let’s also not forget that, during the era of Jim Crow and through the 60’s, the areas that had segregation were Democrat areas.

In fact, swimming skills are sorely lacking in all races in the US. I grew up at the beach, and swam competitively through high school, and continued surfing for decades, though I’d say my swimming skills aren’t what they used to be. But, I can tread for a long time, and swim plenty of laps still. I also taught swimming when I was younger. These skills are ones I’d say most need, and, perhaps instead of spending time on worthless leftist endeavors at school, time could be spent teaching swimming skills. Of course, since Democrats have made majority-minority urban areas so dangerous with their soft on crime policies, pool might not be particularly safe.

White people in the aggregate value the “safety” of their private, segregated, residential spaces far more than they value a system of policing that protects and values all lives equally. It is clear that the anxiety that many white suburban residents feel about having their communities “overrun” by Black people feels far more “traumatizing” to them than having to stand idly by while a few teens get roughed up by the police. If the cost of making white people safe is more than a few Black communities being systematically traumatized and made always to feel unsafe, then so be it. The notion of white safety has its foundations in Indigenous, Black and Brown unsafety. Until white people begin to question the violent origins of such a concept, the police will continue in the name of “white safety” to go around terrorizing communities of color, mostly with impunity.

Let’s get very un-PC for a moment: why are Whites always supposed to give up their values? Why must they always pay the price? Why are we not allowed to advocate for our own safety? Why is it that only other races, in particular Blacks, are allowed to protect their own race?
